WWE Heavily Edited Crowd Noise on Last Night's RAW

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio the WWE heavily edited the crowd noise off of last night's show. During Cena's appearance at the beginning, the fans reportedly went off on the network but Cena was able to calm the crowd to the point that they did not bring it up again. Also, the announcers last night were instructed not to react to the crowd chants.

Hmm. So what does that mean? Online only? Sky has PPV's for good? Rajah needs to start asking questions rather than just repeating press releases!

  6. Not your fault. Just another confusing statement from Sky and WWE.

  7. I totally get why WWE wants its announcers to ignore crowd chants, but it's a hell of a lot more fun when they acknowledged them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I know, and I find that crazy. The Lakers are terrible. It would be different if this were the Kobe from 2006 or whatever, but it's 2014. How much does he have left? My understanding is the plan for the Lakers has been to wait and go after some combination of Love, Westbrook, and Durant, but I mean, it better work if you're putting everything you have in that one plan.

  19. The GFW announcement will be today at 11--not tomorrow. It's looking like they'll announce the commentator for the January 4 pay-per-view. They teased "Who Will it Be?" with a microphone a few days ago and Jarrett said he was dotting the t's and the i's on an announcer's contract. Then yesterday one of the tweets said they'll answer the question "Who Will it Be?" at 11. Karen Jarrett also said this announcement would "SHAKE UP the wrestling world."

The only guy who can live up to this hype is Jim Ross, right? I can't imagine them saying they've signed Josh Matthews or Mike Tenay as their "HUGE announcement."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks for the heads up. That is what I get for reading it last night.

    ReplyDelete
  21. He played college ball there so that could be it

    ReplyDelete
  22. Commentator.
    Shake.
    Harlem Shake.
    Harlem Heat.
    It’s Stevie Ray.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Depends on if Jeff's announcements are as ridiculously not-major as Dixie's. We shall see.

I'd already be interested in GFW if they get Ross. I somehow doubt this is the case, but I guess there's an outside chance.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Right. I understand that and all, but is he really going to go there if they're going to be terrible, simply because he played at UCLA? Granted, there could always be some sort of under the table deal to bring another star in, so who knows? I'm just saying I find it hard to see him going there just because of Kobe.

  31. I don't know about being the greatest songs of the decade, but to me, the two songs that had the greatest impact on the music industry that is still felt today are Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Dr. Dre's "Nothing But A G Thang". It was the beginning of rap music's stranglehold on the charts and ironically, the beginning of the end of rock music having a significant cultural impact in America.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, we know where it goes. Straight to L.A.!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Depends on your definition of culture I
guess, but nu-metal was a pretty big deal for rock. Those bands sold millions.
There was a lot of crossover with rap there though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Everyone's wrong.

The commentary team is Jesse "The Body" Ventura and Vince McMahon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You're leaving? Stay! 46 minutes of countdown fun still to go!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Touche. So what you're saying is, Punk will feel really at home writing an origins story!

    ReplyDelete
  47. No one was wearing their hair long anymore. Tattoos and denim. No more leather. The rock bad boy was phased out. In 1989, Axl Rose was so cool with his shenanigans. By 1994, he was an embarrassment. I can appreciate progression, but rock music had a history of re-inventing itself when things got stale. But today, you wont' hear a legit rock song on Top 40 radio.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Aye, tis true. Thank god for Spotify. We've definitely got a growing metal movement in the UK again though, bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria and Bullet for My Valentine are hitting arenas in a way that new bands haven't for a long time.

Pretty excited about the prospect of JR calling New Japan. I've never had an issue with the Japanese commentary, but anything that gets more eyes on the product is a good thing.

  53. GFW's Big Announcement: Three-Sided Rings!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow. The Triangular-squared-circle.

    ReplyDelete
  55. In America, I guess the two biggest rock groups going or Avenged Sevenfold and Five Fingered Death Punch. Sales wise, they'll move a million albums with no hit singles. I don't think they can sell out a major arena on their own. There are many "festivals" they headline that have dozens of other bands that do major numbers. I just miss the days of a group like Aerosmith coming to Madison Square Garden with Skid Row opening and you're guaranteed 15-18k packing the place.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Meh, it was just Sam Smith pulling shit out of his ass. He's a major Bulls homer that likes to stir the pot with any rivalry.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "The WWE Universe is creating separation from the product."

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think there’s just too many bands. The internet has exposed me to like a billion different bands and the audience is just divided more. I think I liked about ten bands when I was a teenager, now I’m probably a fan of over a hundred. I think fewer bands are ever gonna reach that ultimate top level nowadays.

I think A7X are great, but I don’t get FFDP punch at all.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think when Vince passes, you will see someone or some company step forward and start up a legit wrestling promotion that will have the brains and the resources to last awhile. My view on it is the WWE will significantly scale down once Vince is no longer with us. I don't see HHH getting involved with anything outside of the actual wrestling product unless he's going to business school or taking online courses on how to run the company. Does Stephanie know how to handle investors and keep things like the movie division up and running? If Shane didn't leave, I would feel more confident about the WWE's chances post-Vince. But as long as Vince is breathing, no one is going to start up anything major.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Man, has Austin's podcast gone to shit or what? Feels like ever since he advertised on RAW, it's been nothing but horrible episode back to back about bullshit that I don't even give a fuck about.

    ReplyDelete
  61. lol, I heard the one FFDP song, lyrics, "Don't know where I'm going but I sure know where I've been..," and I thought, OMG Bon Jovi lyrics! I loved dozens of bands when I was teen but as I got older, and even with the internet, my interest waned. I like A&7; they mix it up and try different things. I really like Volbeat; probably because they sound like an 80s band.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It's true. He hasn't done an interview in like two weeks and it's just him rambling.

    ReplyDelete
  63. There's still my beloved Linda to deal with the biz stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I kind of like the Japanese commentary and how excited they get for near-falls. Maybe it's the hipster in me.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I guess she can always come back if she's given up her political aspirations. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if she never really left in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I’m sure with how business is Vince can pony up another 50
million for one last Senate push.

    ReplyDelete
  67. And he didn't have another interview for another 2 weeks before that! Didn't help that his interview with Nash was pure crap

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree. JR, at his best, was like that too.

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's her money, too! She helped build the company!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Fora guy named commander facts you couldn't be more wrong. Even twenty years ago they sweetened or edited crowd noise, or as it was called back then "piped in cheers".

    ReplyDelete
  71. who listened to hair metal when at the same time you could choose to listen to post hardcore bands instead?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wwe wants fans to buy the network. But they dont wanna make the product better, they call their fans cheap, they make fun of fans who pay $50 or whatever it costs for a ppv, they lie to the UK fans about it and then edit out their crowd chants and tell the announcers to ignore them. I swear I hate this fucking company

    ReplyDelete
  73. If I remember correctly, her line of argument was that she was solely
responsible for building the company, yet had nothing to do with any of the bad
things that had ever happened there. Definitely in her last campaign she tried to
distance herself from WWE as much as possible, despite the fact that she had no
other qualifications whatsoever. What a waste of WWE universe money.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Linda just turned 66. Would she even want to do all the stuff Vince currently does?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Comment of the day sir

    ReplyDelete
  76. I always thought that she handled the nitty-gritty biz stuff while Vince was the figurehead and creative force behind the company.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Confirmed: JR calling Wrestle Kingdom on behalf of GFW.

    ReplyDelete
  78. That's the big announcement?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah. I'd say given how big JR's podcast it's gonna a big positive for the event.

    ReplyDelete
  80. She did. The company has taken a lot of it's downturn because Vince has all of the responsibility now.

    ReplyDelete
  81. The anger of the UK fans reminds me of the outrage on the first days of the Obamacare website.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I see this as great news. Jim Ross is one of the top 2 or 3 announcers of all time. This gives GFW credibility and will make it easier for unfamiliar fans to follow the New Japan action.

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's noteworthy...but my Earth has not been shattered.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Badass. At least they differ from TNA in that their announcement is actually big

    ReplyDelete
  85. Compared to other "major" announcements in wrestling from the past few years, I'd say this is a great one.

    ReplyDelete
  86. If JR's calling the event, then they better have some well-defined rules. How will he know who the heels are if there are no rules to break?

    ReplyDelete
  87. The main event should end in a time limit draw.

    ReplyDelete
  88. But for a wrestling company(?) that hasn't yet held its first event, getting a name this big to call it is a real coup.

    ReplyDelete
  89. RAINMAKER! RAINMAKER! RAINMAKER! BAH GAWD!

    ReplyDelete
  90. They actually do follow a 'no closed fists' rule pretty stringently.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I haven't really thought about buying the New Japan PPV until now. But the prospect of Jim Ross calling matches featuring AJ Styles, Alex Shelley, Okada, and the like is really compelling to me.

    ReplyDelete
  92. They should take a cue from the wrestling scene in Madagascar, where they pioneered the two-sided ring.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hair metal always sucked. It's true. It's undergoing a little bit of a rebirth now as well, which is a real fucking shame.

    ReplyDelete
  94. And like nu-metal, emo, though derided, sold A LOT of albums at its peak and heavily influenced popular fashion. I wouldn't say rock lacks a significant cultural impact, just that it's now secondary to hip-hop; hip-hop as a whole influences culture, whereas rock now depends on individual subgenres or scenes to get over.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think most any WWF squash show from the
80s and 90s would show a pretty high level of crowd sweetening to mask the fact
that most of the crowd had fallen asleep as the taping dragged it’s way into it’s
    4th hour.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Slow update day!

    ReplyDelete
  97. This is bigger than any major announcement TNA has made in the past 7 years.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Slow professional wrestling industry is more like it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I was thinking that he was just going to run out of steam too quick. The problem with a wrestling podcast is that you can only talk so much wrestling, with so many guests.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Are they still active? I thought when the bass player died they packed it in.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Except not racist. Odd to say wrestling fans *weren't* the bigots, but it's a new day.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Look at all these Japanese fruit booties out there! Suckas gots ta know!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm definitely ordering the gfw ppv. Been looking to get into njpw for a while and this seems like the perfect opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  104. It also says exclusively in England and Ireland. I'd have to guess it'll be just like in the US without the PPVs.

I would laugh so hard if they are negotiating with sky to get the PPVs back. The "launch date" was a bluff and Sky called them on it.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I can safely tell you that hair metal will never have a rebirth in America. No one wears their hair long. Guitar solos are considered a nuisance. And songs about T&A are reserved for the rap industry. I was a teen during the hair metal era and I embraced it. I didn't need deep lyrics and musical structure.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I remember Kanye West proclaiming that he is the biggest rock star in the world. After the laugher subsided, I realized he wasn't too far from the truth. Rappers live the lifestyles that rock singers did decades before. They have the fans that emulate them. And rap has become was rock music used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Well...aside from the announcement that Hogan/Bischoff would be coming in. That was a bigger announcement...although Jim Ross coming back is definitely more promising.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I wonder if JR will do his schtick of cutting down the other company by saying something about how the "best athletes are on this show!" or "It's good to be back in a WRESTLING company!" If he wasn't turned into Ol' Droopy the McBitch, I would think he would....doubt it now.

  115. Jim Ross calling the IWGP Pay Per View is big, but over the last ten years, JR had some issues when he was paired up with weaker color guys; they need to pair him with someone solid to get the most out of it. Still, this is a minor coup to bring some much needed respectability to the company.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Sounds like a hell of a time for the return of Mongo!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hah, it's true, actually. (I guess that makes Modern Era, Politically Active Jay-Z...the new Bono?)

Rock does need some kind of redefinition. Speaking as someone who hates the hedonistic crap in the old rock star lifestyle, I'd really like to see the advancement of the kind of rock star Cobain pointed towards, with the obvious exception of the drug use - progressive but not preachy, poetic but not pretentious, down-to-earth but not boring. Maybe that's romanticizing things a little too much, I don't know. But we've been swinging from pole to pole since, between the macho aggression of nu-metal, the histrionics of emo, and the whitebread lameness of the current indie scene. There's got to be something in-between.

  122. There's still metal out there, just gotta work hard to find it. I recently saw Prong live at a club that likely only held like 150 people and it was awesome. I mean, sucks for them that such a great band is relegated to that but I thought it was a cool atmosphere and that must've been what it felt like to see a band like that when they first started. They didn't hold anything back even though the crowd was small.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'd pair him up with a fresh face. It isn't clear if Jim Ross will continue with the promotion for other events past the New Japan show or not. So give us someone good that they're sure they can keep around.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Kinda disappointed no room for Castlevania.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Record companies need to get behind rock acts again and market them as such. Unfortunately, not all, but the majority of their target market is so conditioned to the three and a half assembly line created radio hits that anything with a guitar solo and loud drums would scare them off.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Prong was here a couple years ago and played in a sports bar. They were a little ahead of their time. Would have done really well in the latter part of the 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  127. What, shitty sanitized pop music?

    ReplyDelete
  128. Damn, I was hoping it was Taylor Swift!! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Rock wasn't always sanitized. But record companies always know best.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I think they were too similar to Pantera in that they were both very bass heavy. Pantera obviously took off to great heights b/c let's face it, even though I love Tommy Victor, he's definitely nowhere near as good as Dimebag Darrell was on guitar. Even though they had some pretty decent hits, they got overshadowed by Pantera b/c they didn't have anything nearly as big as Walk, CFH, etc.

    ReplyDelete

  132. I think Foo Fighters would like to have a word with you, though maybe you just meant metal groups.

  133. NJPW, not IWGP lol. IWGP is the name of their titles.

    ReplyDelete
  134. If only we could have JR and Heyman

    ReplyDelete
  135. I wonder how a Keneley/Borash team would work out full-time. Because jacking Borash from TNA might not be a bad move... except for TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I meant currently; I think the Foo Fighters are on a break. But what an anomaly the Foo Fighters are. I figured Grohl would release a couple albums and move on. But he put together nearly 20 years of hits.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Correct. And WCW was horrifically notorious for its piped-in "GOLDBERG!" chants, especially when the camera was shooting crowd members sitting on their ass, looking like they'd rather be anywhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I was just watching some Shield vs Bryan/Kane stuff from last year, and it is a DAMN SHAME that they broke the Shield up. A year later, and we have the goofball, the cowardly heel, and a boring male model when we used to have the fucking SHIELD. So weak.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Something not a lot of music fans consider is maybe Prong didn't want to do all the stuff that a band has to do to be that mega-successful. Not everyone is welling to put in the legwork and be open minded with a record company that will inevitable tell them how they should sound. Prong probably just wanted to play their music and are obviously still making money doing their thing on a much lower scale.

    ReplyDelete
  140. There's no way Borash isn't the last one out of TNA. He's gonna be the one turning out the lights.

    ReplyDelete
  141. SHIELD six-man tags saved a lot of poor shows in the last two years.

    ReplyDelete
  142. The only silver lining in that cloud is Rollins has exceeded by miles what I thought he would top off at: A mid carder having good matches. But here he is on screen rubbing shoulders with the head of talent relations and part owner of the company.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Yeah he has great matches. But all 3 of those guys should, at the right time, have been so much more.

    ReplyDelete
  144. There's still time for all three. Reign's path has been well documented. Rollins is doing very well. But Ambrose - what a diamond in the rough. But I fear he won't get that push that would send him in the stratosphere because he's not suppose to.
