Cena = worst partner ever?

I read the Cageside review and I'm glad I wasn't alone wondering where the heck Super-Cena: defender of all that is true and good was while Dolph got beaten up by 4 guys and screwed out of his title, or when Sheamus was put through a table, or Show choked out.  Does Vince realize how unlikable their child friendly star appears to be to anyone over 12?   Is there a worse message to send the so called PG fan base than "sit around and watch your friends get beat up, don't worry they'll still defend your honor".  Not too mention, Cena is likely going over strong for the Brock-push, so literally the ENTIRE roster, face and heel will be buried by Cena's booking.  His team looks stupid and clueless for risking their jobs for a selfish jerkwad, and the authority will be jobbers for him.  He is the real life equivalent of the high school jock and NO ONE likes the high school jock!   They should just pair Nikki with him already

Not to mention that now everyone who did stand up with him is risking their job (in storyline) if they lose.  And while we know Cena would get hired back somehow the night after, do you really think anyone is going to stick their neck out to get Erick Rowan his job back?

This is what happens when they lose all their top stars and have never bothered to make new ones.  All Cena, All The Time!

  1. Would another decade and a half of late era WCW have been any better? What iteration of the NWO would we be on now?

WWE has had some relatively good runs in the interim, even if we are not in the midst of one now.

  2. Scott, you really should stop responding to the mentally retarded.

Yes, they're people too, but they don't know any better.

    It's not right.

He seems kind of evil. Like, Cruella DeVille evil.

  6. They've made new stars. They're all hurt or left the company. You don't lose the two true megastars you've created in a span of weeks, and then lose the guy you've had earmarked to be that next guy to injury for several months, without feeling it. That's true if you're a wrestling company, a pro basketball team, a TV show or anything else.

Beyond those guys, just think about how much worse of shape they'd be in- from the unquestionably bad shape they're already in- if it wasn't for acts created in the last two years such as Ambrose, Wyatt and Harper.

  10. Even if they rescued this whole angle by having the face team turn on Cena on Sunday, it still doesn't explain why Cena isn't out there helping his teammates.

The only way THAT would make sense is if Cena turns out to be the bad guy in the long run, working with Vince or whoever. I'm still clinging on to the hope that this company has some kind of genius long-term plan that will justify how non-sensical everything has been recently

  11. Yeah "top superstar vs. authority figure" has been going on for, what, 17 years now?

The freshest thing they could do with the product is also the easiest --- stop with the GM/Authority/CEO/President/COO storylines. It would make the show feel completely different.

But you see, the only people WWE is interested in pleasing are the children, who don't think at this (semi-) abstract level. It doesn't matter whether their parents, aunts/uncles, parents of their friends, etc. see all these good points, b/c their only concern - if they're "good parents" - is to ensure the children's happiness.

WWE is abusing the idea that once you have children, it's no longer about you, and all about the chidren (won't someone think of them?!). Since the parents ostensibly are in a position to provide financial support, WWE brilliantly targets the parents through the children, knowing that no parent is going to say to a child, "I don't think we should watch John Cena this evening, kiddo. This whole storyline is filled with fallacies, non-truths, and distorted thinking" without the child countering with a blank stare, then saying, "I like turtles John Cena."

We know you do, Jimmy. We know you do.

    ReplyDelete
  78. The Rock never had people risk themselves for him except for Foley so The Rock helped Foley. Cena has people back him up all the time and helps no one.

  85. Austin and The Rock never asked or didn't want any help and nobody stuck their own neck out for them (except Foley). It wasn't in their characters. Austin did help people who were up against McMahon and The Rock helped Foley and that made sense.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Did you really think the Network was going to be full of extremely obscure stuff like that? Christ, guy.

No, you're right. They have every PPV ever made by WCW, ECW and the WWE and there's not a goddamn thing to see. For all the problems the Network has, "there's nothing to watch" isn't one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  87. WWE is turning parents against children, and wrecking families. They're the HEIGHT of EVIL.

  89. I've heard all of these in Yoda's voice.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Ironically enough Savage would NOT help Hogan until someone took a swing at Liz.

    ReplyDelete
  91. At least Hogan always came out to save his friends. I mean, he would spent 10 minutes showboating about it, but at least he would do it.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Cena often made the save for Daniel Bryan last year, just for the record. And the live thread was all "and heerree's Cena to leach off Daniel Bryan's heat!!"

    The guy just can't win!

    ReplyDelete
  93. In that case the critics probably weren't wrong. I think it was pretty clear that WWE really, really didn't want to make Bryan a main eventer because they were pinning their fortunes on Batista's big return until the audience near-rioted.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Liz probably told him Savage had already won, and that Savage had the FUCKING TEMERITY to celebrate in the ring on his own without Hogan hogging the spotlight.

    ReplyDelete
  95. But #CENAWINZLOL

    Paradox. Mind........blown. (boom)

    ReplyDelete
  96. So... What do you want Cena to do? Help his friends (and leach their heat), or not help his friends, and be a selfish dick? Maybe run halfway to the ramp, and yell at them to please stop?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yeah. Why put of obscure stuff that hasn't been seen before? Instead, put up PPVs that have been tape traded forever.

I never said there was nothing to watch on the Network, rather that the current product does not interest me enough to get Survivor Series (probably the biggest selling point of the free month). However, if I wanted to watch old WCW, ECW, WWE PPVs, I can dip into my collection assembled preNetwork. Or has some must-see PPV that nobody has talked about in the past 15 years suddenly popped up?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yep, when it comes to the IWC, it's #LOLCENACANTWIN

    ReplyDelete
  99. If I'm being truthful, I kind of just want Cena to stop being the focus of the shows. I know that's unrealistic though.

    ReplyDelete
  100. You are totally, clearly their exact target audience for the network!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Does 'E even know their target audience? I would think anyone with any interest in wrestling would be the target.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I don't feel like playing the "was this the plan all along?" game again, but Bryan was treated like a pretty big deal from the moment he stepped into the company. He was referred to as the best wrestler in the world on that NXT show, had a storyline with one of the announcers and a guy who was months away from main eventing WrestleMania. Won the briefcase after a year in the company. Main evented the second-biggest show of the year, beating John Cena clean for the title, just months before.
Whether or not it was the plan all along for him to main event WM30, the following things are true:

    1. It didn't take a fan riot for him to main event Summerslam and beat John Cena clean, things that, combined, don't have a significantly lower threshold than main eventing WrestleMania.
    2. He was mostly booked like a legit player and future top guy from his debut.
    3. He did, in fact, main event WM30.

    ReplyDelete
  103. You mean that you know nothing besides what zanadude includes in his wonderfully informative recaps right?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Cena = Worst partner ever, or at the bottom of the best list for partners ever?

    ReplyDelete
  105. 100% agreed. Even when he "lost" the feud to Orton, he still clearly had the match won all 3 times. He was still a part of SOME plan.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Cena lost to Bryan at Summerslam took a couple of months off then returned beat Del Rio a couple of times while Bryan was shunted into the Wyatt fued to make room for Cena vs Orton #36281.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Cena/Orton was clearly a placeholder feud for bigger things at WM. And... What the heck does that have to do with anything? Cena still made the save for Bryan several times, between Summerslam and WM.

    ReplyDelete
  108. The bigger thing was meant to be Batista.

This whole Literal thing about ignoring what the plans were meant to be is silly. Only by looking at what they *wanted* to do can we predict what they would *want* to do in the future. Yes, Roman Reigns and John Cena might get busted for a murder and go to prison, at which point Ambrose might get the world title, it doesn't mean WWE is smart or knows the right guys to push.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Did he, admittedly Raw was not/is not top of my TV agenda, but Punk came out to help Bryan vs the Wyatts and Tweener maybe fired Big Show helped him against the Authority. Can'r remember Cena and Bryan being in the same ring after Summerslam.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Going back to what I said about beating Cena clean and main eventing Summerslam...here's the list of people who've beaten Cena clean the last five years:
    -Daniel Bryan
    -The Rock
    -CM Punk
    -Brock Lesnar
Now here's the list of Summerslam main eventers in that time, not counting the Nexus angle:
    -Daniel Bryan
    -John Cena
    -CM Punk
    -Brock Lesnar
    -Triple H
Point is, Daniel Bryan was running in some pretty elite circles well before he was supposedly some hard-luck underdog that the fans had to revolt to put into the main event of WrestleMania. Whether or not he was specifically main eventing that show, they'd established pretty much from the moment he walked in the door that he was going to be a top guy.

    ReplyDelete
  111. That's happened several times in recent years. When CM Punk quits, Daniel Bryan gets hurt, Roman Reigns gets hurt and Brock Lesnar is too expensive to be around more than every few weeks/months, who would you focus the show on when you're losing a lot of money? Every "new star" you've recently created/elevated is hurt or gone. Seth Rollins is a heel. Dean Ambrose wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire as the co-top face. You have one bankable guy who's been around forever and at least sells merchandise and house show tickets.
I'm tired of him too (though I still generally enjoy his matches) but I'd probably have put him back in the middle of things also.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yes, they clearly should have marketed this more toward tape traders from the 1990's.

    ReplyDelete
  113. If by that you mean wrestling fans that once went out of their way to see the product... then yes.

    ReplyDelete

You're in the IWC. You're here every day for hours a day. This qualifies.

    It's okay. You'll be okay. Don't panic. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  115. For me the issue isn't that it's Cena, it's that the storyline doesn't play by its own rules and thus doesn't make any fucking sense. Of course I expect Cena to come out and protect his parters, they're setting up fucking Survivor Series! If they get the shit kicked out of them, they aren't 100% at the PPV and they are at a disadvantage. It's not rocket science.

    ReplyDelete
  116. That would be awesome, instead of some vaguely evil boss that just makes matches on a whim. They're wrestlers in a company, we get they're going to fight each other. Now, make it seem like the winners get more, losers get less, champs make a ton. Money is the great elixir - it's something worth fighting over! I always think back to the Stan Hansen promo about why he wants to win b/c he has a big fat wife and nine kids to feed and this guy wants to beat him, which means Stan makes less money. Boom, instant motivation and reason to fight.

They established pretty heavily that Cena had an arm injury when he lost to Bryan, and Punk never beat him clean either. It's really just Rock and Lesnar.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I don't know how else to explain to you that you, personally, do not speak for wrestling fans at large. So I'm just not going to anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'll be at Raw next week, but I don't know if I'll be near a camera. Plus, I'll be walking around Indy drinking all afternoon and won't feel like carrying a sign.
    So, I'll think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  121. How should I put this....I've tried reading them.

    ReplyDelete
  122. one could claim he is not the worst partner because if you team up with him you win.

    ReplyDelete
  123. as mentioned before: wasn't that more the "smark" opinion?

but I don't think it's that far fetch to think that even Average Joe watching would notice that it is kind of weird that Cena is shown as being backstage ... and still doing nothing to save his team partners (especially when later in the show they have a segment with him being in danger of being outnumbered and his team members coming out to help him).

    ReplyDelete
  124. "He is the real life equivalent of the high school jock and NO ONE likes the high school jock!"

True, but this is Vince McMahon we're talking about. I think it's safe to say that he LOVES the high school jock and probably always saw himself as the Big Man on Campus who strutted down the halls with whatever piece of arm candy he was dating at the time, high-fiving all of his teammates while the nerds cowered in their lockers. Cena is probably just a projection of Vince's desire to still be that guy who was always the greatest in his own mind. Just look at how he struts down to the ring, for crying out loud!

Then again, if this is building towards the ultimate swerve where Cena sells out, joins the Authority and finally takes his rightful place alongside Steph and HHH, then this will be a brilliant storyline that we'll all go crazy for. Somehow, I doubt it, though.

Well, when they eventually do turn him, they'll have hours of video to show of what foreshadowed it. Seriously, if this was a shoot sport, his team would help Trips' team beat the shit out of him.

  127. "Whether or not he was specifically main eventing that show, they'd
established pretty much from the moment he walked in the door that he
was going to be a top guy."

while I agree about the company obviously seeing more in him than just some randome midcarder by 2013, I disagree about them establishing him as a "future top guy" from the beginning.

and also, I am not sure if this "going to be a top guy" can really be said about anyone until they make it. I mean, there were several workers with occasional (Wade Barrett, R-Truth, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Christian) and some even with regular (Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, Ryback) shots at the main event that still didn't end up as being as much of star as Punk and Bryan (and certainly not as much of star as Cena or "veterans" like Taker or Triple H) did.

    ReplyDelete
  128. he didn't claim it would be "good for business" (he even specifically mentions it to be "unrealistic"), he just states that it is something he would want.

    ReplyDelete
  136. For me, the most oblivious heel thing Cena ever did was when he agreed to face Rey Mysterio for the WWE title the same night Rey won it. Earlier, Rey did that emotional promo where he expressed how happy he was that he was going to bring the belt home to his family, and Cena even congratulated him right then and there. Later on, it's determined that Rey defends against Cena. Are you telling me Cena was happy to get a title shot under those unfair circumstances and that he was so greedy for the WWE title that he'd ruin Rey's moment? That was pretty glaring, but yeah, his lack of assistance to his teammates Monday night was also pretty bad.

This pretty much says it all, doesn't it? Kids aren't thinking "Cena's a jerk for not helping his friends", they're thinking "John Cena is awesome and cool and always wins and I wish I could be John Cena". Especially if they're dealing with problems like abuse or bullying and wish that Cena could come out of the television and beat up their tormentors. It's dark and sad, but I do imagine that at least some of his appeal is based on that unpleasant truth.

  141. I remember that. That was fucking ridiculous. As Cena was holding the belt high, Cult of Personality hit, and then Punk showed up and held his belt higher face to face with Cena.

The was the only good thing about it.

  142. Except wins/losses doesn't matter, unless in a title match.

  145. That's what happens when you try to cram a 3 month storyline into 3 weeks so you can do Punk/Cena II at SummerSlam.

    Cena = Neidermeyer

  148. Hogan would occasionally do the right thing, even if in the end it was completely self-serving. Cena's just an absolute dick who's damn near impossible to like.

  149. One of my favorite promos of all-time. "I'm not after the bright lights and the little women. I got a big fat wife and 9 kids and I gotta feed em!"

  150. It would get the loudest pops of the show. ROCKY ROCKY

  151. I was recently playing "20 questions" with my fiance's cousins. They are 10 and 8 and each of them watches roughly 5 hours of television per night. I figured I'd test them with John Cena. Neither of them got it. They'd never even heard of him.

Now, obviously this anecdote doesn't prove anything. Based on merchandise sales, Cena is clearly the most popular wrestler they have, especially among pre-teens. But when I was there age, it would be unfathomable for someone to not know who Hogan, Savage, Andre, or even Ultimate Warrior were.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I don't think he ever ran in to save Bryan from a beating though.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I, quite literally, do not remember Cena ever saving Daniel Bryan from a beatdown. I remember him name dropping and verbally defending Bryan, but only to get the crowd on his side so he could then talk about himself.

    ReplyDelete
  154. This. Do the Jock & Sock Connection with Foley and Cena and Foley gets his ass kicked repeatedly while Cena talks about what a brave guy Foley is, but TONIGHT I AM NOT HERE TO TALK ABOUT THAT I AM HERE TO TALK ABOUT TAKING BACK MY WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP JACK

Well, the tournament Rey win was so important that Vince cancelled the final so he could fire.... John Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Which is why Cena is not on the same plane as those guys or Rock or Austin. For all his merch sales, buyrates and ratings have gone down during his time on top and the product is dead cold.

    ReplyDelete
  157. All I can say is that at least WCW wasn't embarrassed about being a wrestling company.

    ReplyDelete
  158. wouldn't the ideal situation be that WCW and WWE both stay in business and put on a great product? Why must one side take all?

    ReplyDelete
  159. I was just about to say that.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Yeah, in a way, Austin vs. Vince has been really bad for wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  161. What Cena's character is doing is no different from Hogan in the 80s.

    Didn't like it then, either.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Only buying if they put the match in the back of a moving truck!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Rock rallied the entire roster together to get Mick Foley's job back.

Big Show cried in the ring to keep his job, but then was fired, and Cena did nothing but makes jokes at the guy who fired him later on in the show.

  164. Rock rallied the entire roster together to get Foley's job back after Stephanie and Triple H fired him.

The people who ultimately ended up killing the promotion within AOL/TW certainly were embarrassed about owning a wrestling company, hence the reason we have no more WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I came in to say the same thing. At least Dusty Rhodes helped his friends in the NWA out when they needed it.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Cena doesn't have near the visibility that Hogan, Rock or Austin had in their hayday. The only non-fans I've talked to that know how he is are some girls that think he's hot (They also knew Orton).

    ReplyDelete
  168. Hogan could make people want to buy a PPV alone and sell a bit of passion in a match. Cena, for example, comes across as awkward and like a total dork when he tries to get emotional about things (e.g. like that painful segment to end Raw). Basically, Hogan's a much better actor when it comes to doing a promo than Cena

    ReplyDelete
  169. No Vince wanted to BE the high school jock.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I don't see WCW imploding with a monopoly. All of the stupid crap you can lay at their feet were the result of them desperately trying to regain the advantage in the ratings war with the WWF. Giving away PPV calibre matches for free on Nitro, the finger poke of doom, hiring Vince Russo, rehashing the nWo until no one cared. All misguided attempts to win the ratings war. If WCW had won and managed to put Vince down in the late 90s? With no ratings war to focus on? We don't get that crap.
Hogan and Nash would probably have stuck around a bit longer even then...why bother keeping them around with such sweet deals after their contracts ran out with no WWF to jump back to?
Point being that a hypothetical WCW monopoly wouldn't have imploded.

All that being said? WCW would have fallen victim to the same crap that's made the WWF/E so frustrating to watch since the end of the war. Competition breeds a better product. The best result would have been for both companies to remain active.
Variety and competition. Would be great to have right about now.

  171. In addition, he held the World Title for four months, and the tag titles for eight, and was booked pretty strong compared to what they normally do with "champions"

That fucking asshole will never understand that.

    ReplyDelete
  174. IMO, Cena can do what he does without being the main focus of the show, and the kids will STILL come out to cheer him on. His character's rigidity (is that even a word?) make writing storylines around him really difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  175. but wait, didn't Big Show have some sort of iron clad contract that prevents him from being fired by HHH?

    ReplyDelete
  176. Still bummed out that Indianapolis will never get another PPV again after they shit on the 2012 Survivor Series?

    ReplyDelete
  177. It's funny that so much of the worst that came out of both companies came out of envy and a dissatisfaction with wrestling -- WCW trying to WWF-ize themselves at various points, Time-Warner/AOL killing their TV slot because they viewed it as low-rent, and Vince's desperate need to be seen as a legitimate player on the larger entertainment map.

    ReplyDelete
  178. My kid loves John Cena. My kid has never seen an episode of Raw, Smackdown, or Superstars. The only Cena match he's ever seen is Cena/Punk at MITB in Chicago. He loves Cena because he's on his friends T-shirts, backpacks, and lunchboxes. (He also loves Cena because I rooted for Punk, and he likes to root against anyone I like. So maybe I'm doing something right with this whole parenting deal.)

  179. grand-standin and hot-doggin

    ReplyDelete
  180. Turner's WCW was trying to be like Vince's WWF all the while Vince was trying to be like Ted Turner :D

Again, it's a shame WCW had to die. This was the perfect rivalry. They were made for each other!

    ReplyDelete
  181. This match actually has some of the highest stakes ever in a wrestling match. 10 people's careers are on the line, several of the them future hall of famers. Kayfabe wise, this is probably the highest stakes for a WWE match since the 2001 Survivor Series main event. Too bad noone believes anyone is actually getting fired, so its all horseshit.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Rock was the guy who would always make fun of his friend and generally be a dick, but then back them up when they really needed it. Cena's the guy who is always nice, but then he sleeps with your girlfriend and doesn't understand why you'd be mad.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I think this is about faces though. Heels are supposed to be hypocritical jerks.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I always loved the Foley/Rock relationship. Rock treated him so poorly up to when Foley thought Rock threw out his book and went off on him. After that Rock unfailingly backed him, rallying the roster and threatening to walk to get his job back, attacking HHH to save Foley after the handcuffs at the Rumble spot, the 5 on 2 thing, backing up Foley years later against Evolution.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Yeah, you basically summarized that perfectly in one line right there haha.

Remember how hurt Hogan was when Andre came into Piper's Pit with Heenan? "But Andre, what are you saying? Andre you're my friend. I don't wanna fight you brother." Cena would have just laughed it off and made jokes and then get fake passionate about it, scream like an idiot, call him "Jack", and then no sell everything Andre did in the actual match.

  187. Virgil's Gimmick TableNovember 20, 2014 at 1:55 AM

Because they're so out of touch that no one wants to look uncool by advertising them. SNL HAD to have Hogan host because he was so huge. Slim Jim HAD to have Savage as a spokesman. Same reason. Austin and Rock and the NWO were so cool and badass that there was no way they weren't gonna get popular in the mainstream. And the merch was cool too. Austin 3:16 and NWO shirts look cool even now. No one wants their product associated with a cheesy fucking dork who wears jorts and has cartoon colored shirts. Cena is horribly uncool.

People who say that WCW was so great and should have won are ridiculous. WCW on its death bed was easily the worst that any wrestling company has ever been. And I should know. I got into wrestling when I was 8 years old by watching WCW in 2000. No shit. All of these WCW fans who have only been watching for 2 years and have only seen the good stuff on the network/DVDs don't understand. I was born into the darkness. Molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was a man.

    ReplyDelete
  189. They actually handwaved that during last year's Authority angle that the contract wasn't as ironclad as Show thought.
