Watching the Austin/McMahon rivalry episode on network and the mention Montreal so here's a quick one:
If Madusa never shows up on Nitro and drops the Women's Title, does Vince screw Bret? Vince was obviously paranoid because of the Madusa/Nitro situation. He and Bret were close for nearly 15 years. Can we kinda sorta thank Madusa for helping spark the Mr. McMahon character?
I think it was certainly a contributing factor, but a minor one. Madusa wasn't actually going to drop the belt on the way out anyway, she was basically fired (her contract expired and she wasn't offered a new one) and it was more that the company stupidly forgot to ask for the belt back. It's not like she was supposed to come in for a RAW in December and drop the title to Aja Kong and screwed them over. There had been a rough plan for that title change at Royal Rumble but that was out the window by December.
So yes, Vince would definitely have still screwed Bret at Montreal.
is there anything left to say about Montreal?
ReplyDeleteMontreal.
ReplyDeleteApparently because people keep e-mailing me about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm still interested to know what Shawn and Bret's opinions are on the incident
ReplyDeleteCan we ban Montreal topics
ReplyDeleteThe smoked meat is pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI'm a vegetarian, no buys. Good for nothing, that Montreal.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear.
ReplyDeleteThe bagels are good too.
Here's a new Montreal question: How badly would WCW have dropped the ball with the situation if Bret Hart had jumped ship with the title? "We've got the WWE championship here, and, um, uh, well, okay, we could have him...gosh, this is hard. Oh, here we go. He defends it against Hogan in a champion vs. champion match but then he'll swerve everyone and join the NWO instead and, I don't know, we can have Vincent end up wearing the belt."
ReplyDeleteFair enough. I'll have a bagel. Must be some nice cheese there, what with the French and all.
ReplyDeleteBischoff and Vince.
ReplyDeleteHogan says he's the real world champion with his WCW title, Bret appears out of nowhere with the WWF title... and then they hug.
Oh yeah, the province of Quebec has a number of excellent cheese producers. I often buy a nice Quebec triple cream brie from my cheesemonger, I can't recall the dairy off the top of my head though.
ReplyDeleteAnd he gives the title to Bischoff, who puts it up against Larry Zbyszko at Starrcade. They get the other company's belt and it goes up in a match between an announcer (albeit ex-wrestler) and an authority figure. That is the most WCW thing possible.
ReplyDeleteIs there more to the Madusa incident than just ''they fired her and forgot about the title''?
ReplyDeleteI know it was 1995 and I know how badly operated they were...but still. That is amazingly WCW.
I always think the answer is no, and yet, there are always questions aboiut it.
ReplyDeleteEven if Madusa did factor in, that's Vince's own fault for firing the first shot with "REAL World's Champion" Ric Flair.
ReplyDeleteThere was a girl dressed as Bret at the bar last night. She didn't find "I'm going to screw Bret" as funny as I did.
ReplyDeleteThat was a little different, since the NWA required the champ to put a $25,000 deposit down on the big gold belt. When the NWA decided not to return the money to Flair when his contract was up, he took the belt with him to the WWF.
ReplyDeleteHe could still have let them settle their matter privately but he chose to try and bury them.
ReplyDeleteTit for tat.
It needs to be pointed out that at the time of Montreal, the WWF had a lawsuit pending against WCW over the Madusa incident, and there was no way Turner was going to give them more ammunition by having Bret show up on Nitro with the belt. So anyone who says that Vince had to screw Bret to keep that from happening is either full of shit or ignorant.
ReplyDeletePlus it was just the women's title so who gives a shit?
ReplyDeletenope. Deposit or not Vince set a precedent that bit him in the ass with the Madusa situation.
ReplyDeleteWell you DO go by as the "HartKiller"
ReplyDeleteTrue. Bischoff also notes this.
ReplyDeleteAnd ends in a NWO run-in DQ
ReplyDeleteIs it really fun different than what happened with Jarrett? Or later in WCW, with Meng?
ReplyDeleteWWE SNAPPED up Meng, WCW hardcore champ, proving they would if they could still
It's not about having the physical belt.
ReplyDeleteIt's about having the "rightful champion" leave.
No matter who you put the belt on, they never beat the superior bet hart and is only champion because he left. See the REAL world champion on WCW
Scott,
ReplyDeleteIs the Montreal Incident the fault of the original Warrior being replaced by Kerry Von Erich?
Nope, Time Travelin' John Cena wins.

Not Quite. WWF still acted like the belt had value, unlike Madusa in WCW
ReplyDeleteYay! This fight again!
ReplyDeleteHogan and Sting was etched in stone, Sting going over was the easiest thing ever and they screwed that up, so yeah I have no faith that if Bret walked out on WCW Nitro with the WWF belt they probably would have had him job it to TV champion Disco Inferno.
ReplyDeleteReality and what was in Vince's head are never the same thing.
ReplyDeleteWhat's always astounded me about that match is here's two dudes who FUCKING HATE each other and are having huge arguments for months backstage...they then proceed to have the most safe and protected Kayfabe match. Sorta cool.
ReplyDeleteThey're COMPLETELY DIFFERENT situations.
ReplyDelete-- Flair had given JCP a $25,000 deposit to PREVENT him from taking the physical belt with him to another company. They then refused to give him that money back when he left.
-- According to Flair, when he asked for the money back, Jim Herd TOLD HIM TO KEEP THE BELT. Basically saying "this symbol of the company is now yours, pal."
Hell, TNA's done it at least twice in the last two years. With their World Champ no less.
ReplyDeleteYeah but the fork was already sticking out if wcw then and no one cares about it, let alone the hardcore title
ReplyDeleteAnd now Canada gets the Network through Rogers. Madusa screwed Canada!
ReplyDeleteWhy wouldn't Bret have sued Vince and WWF for breach of contract if they really did that? Not one lawyer gets involved in that whole thing? Plus Bret was filiming a movie that set that up perfectly? But its crazy to call it a work?
ReplyDeleteBret's idea about forfeiting the title on Raw is about the dumbest scenario ever though. Bischoff could have easily twisted as "Bret just admitted that the WWF doesn't mean a damn thing, and now he wants a REAL challenge, to win the title where the big boys play! "
