Me @ Survivor Series

So I'm going to be on camera and plan on bringing a few Tell 'Em Steve Dave signs, getting sloppy drunk, and yelling TELL EM STEVE DAVE as much as possible... Bad idea?

My IQ dropped 4 points just reading that e-mail and I feel like you literally owe me money for making me waste the 30 seconds that it took to read it, post this response, and come up with the insult required to sum up my feelings on it.

So, you know, whatever.

Comments

  1. While I appreciate this guys dedication to Kevin Smith movies of the past, the sell-by date for that reference has LONG since passed.

    ReplyDelete
  2. never too old for a Kevin Smith reference. I still find Clerks the funniest movie of all time (probably helps that I spent 8 months working in a small grocery store in a working class town called Eureka, CA)

    ReplyDelete
  3. If you are are going to make Kevin Smith references, Might I suggest Huge black cocks with pearly white cum 4" or "You're not allowed to wrestle here anymore!" with a sign next to you saying "Yeaaaaahhhhh!!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  4. I like Chasing Amy and Clerks as much as the next guy, but Kevin Smith is a joke in 2014.

His 2011 movie, Red State, made $1.1 million from only 5 theaters. That's pretty impressive, especially compared to his 2014 movie, Tusk. That has made $1.8 million so far... in 602 theaters.

If he didn't prove to be so unprofessional to work with on COP OUT, or if his fanbase actually went to see his movies, more studios would be lining up to work with him.

So his solution to his stagnant career is to do two more horror movies that probably won't break $2 million and then go back and do Clerks III.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's because Red State has a special roadshow releasing with inflated ticket prices.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Which makes the gross look even worse. The only way it broke $1 million is because Kevin Smith fans paid $50 to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm thinking about doing this for Raw on Monday. I really am. I just need to figure out if I have much of a chance to get on camera.

    ReplyDelete
  8. agreed, but I dont think that's how Vince is using it. He is using it as a putdown to belittle the posters for taking it too seriously and to insinuate he's somehow better than them for being "above that." Or atleast that is how he comes across.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hey! I live in Eureka now!

    ReplyDelete
  10. oh yeah? I went to Humboldt St. for a year. Lived on campus in Arcata but worked at C&V market part time in Eureka. Wonder if still exists. This was back in 92/93

    ReplyDelete
  11. It sure does.

  13. I think the one two punch of Zach and Miri being a box office bomb and Cop Out being a critical flop pushed him over the edge

    ReplyDelete
  14. Good God Kevin Smith is a bunch of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  15. that is awesome. I doubt the owner are still Gary and Janice Albee though. They were in their 60s when I was there. Gary was good people.

    ReplyDelete
  16. funny thing was back then it was located next to a home brewing store and (here's the kicker) a place that ran AA meetings. Here we are offering 22 ounces of Magnum Malt Liquor for 99 cents and here is a home brewing place right next to the AA meetings. I guess you really had to want sobreity. Also had a weird group home for mentally unstable folks across the street, although they never gave me any problems other than occasionally wanting to talk to much to me.

  17. Might as well go for the gold and create a sign that says "HOPE YOU DON'T USE 37 ICE PACKS ON YOUR WAY OUT!!!" For whenever someone from Cena's team gets eliminated

I love the fact that the women are treated as serious competitors instead of fragile blow up dolls. It's nice to see at least one televized promotion that understands the value of female wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's when Smith threatened to charge critics to preview his movies, which led to Roger Ebert to brilliantly tweet: "Kevin Smith thinks critics should have had to pay to see Cop Out. But Kev, then they would REALLY have hated it."

    ReplyDelete
  23. "That joke fell flatter than Walt Flanagan's dog!!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  24. Interesting that in his old age, Vince is more and more like his dad. Sr rode the Bruno and Backlund trains as long as he could...now Cena is Vince Jr's Sammatino/Backlund.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Virgil's Gimmick TableNovember 21, 2014 at 12:52 PM

Yeah, they need to fix that booking immediately. Those are major plot holes for such a story driven show.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It wasn't intended to be a wide release. It was a small personal project that he only did the public screenings so it would eligible for awards.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Makes me wonder how old this cat is.

I mean maturity wise I'd go with eleven, but... that's not really someone who fits into Smith's demographic. Shit, I'm 30 and I only discovered his stuff in 2002. So we're dealing with a 30 something at least who types that drivel?

    Terrifying.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why isn't anybody marveling about the fact that somehow Scott's e-mail inbox is somehow able to receive messages from 1995?! Respond to this guy and have him tell an 11-year-old me to buy Apple stock

    ReplyDelete

But I do see the joke and I apologize for killing it.

By "here" you mean the BoD

    ReplyDelete
  40. Here's the thing, though. It's a fun meme for the blog, but no one in the WWE is likely to give a flying fuck or even get it. Does anyone think the backstage conversations these days revolve around Ricardo friggin' Rodriguez's shoot interview? At this point, it's possible/likely that neither Rollins nor Cena even remember the "incident."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is this bruce Willis? This is Bruce Willis isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't get it. Does this somehow relate to Kevin Smith?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm sure winning "Best Film" at the Catalonian International Film Festival made it worth it (Yes, Red State actually won that award).

If I recall correctly, Smith said he was self-distributing to show how effective self-distribution can be, citing Passion of the Christ. Turns out Smith completely and totally underestimated his audience.

But for argument's sake, if Red State was only meant to be a "personal project", is that the same excuse that Smith is using for Tusk bombing?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Make a sign with Bill Cosby's face with "I got two words for ya" on it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. He was great for his size. His "big matches" are often a little limited given that 90% of his offense is Powerbombs (I've seen a bunch of FMW matches where it's basically JUST that one move), but he was definitely a high-end guy. Of course, nobody in WCW or the WWF was going to be taking that many Powerbombs a night (and that's not really a bad thing).

    ReplyDelete
  49. TJ: I was just thinking...it's likely Lucha Underground will get about the same, if not better, ratings than TNA despite El Rey being less available than Destination America. So, I thought I would throw this hypothetical out there...just for the sake of discussion (I'm looking at you, WWE1987), TNA folds...who would Lucha Underground benefit from signing?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Or when a babyface gets the hot tag, yell "KICK HIS ASS, SEA BASS!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  51. No offense, but the ratings won't even be similar at all. Not even close. At least for a long time if not ever.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, plenty of great movies don't do well at the box office. I agree it's not the end-all, be-all.

But when you have a guy like Smith who has dud after dud even though he's supposedly has a HUGE fanbaset. And if critics hate your movies enough that even your diehard fanbase doesn't want to see them, well, something isn't right.

And Jersey Girl was awful. But yeah, it's kind of been overshadowed by his even worse more recent films.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh and it was line from mall rats? Love the movie but I guess I haven't seen it enough to catch all the references.

  61. One match I NEVER get see pimped (probably due to lack of exposure) that I remember being great = Eddie Guerrero & The Steiner Brothers vs. Dean Malenko, Cactus Jack & Too Cold Scorpio. Also Psicosis vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri from 2000 was fantastic. I went out of my way to see it after people raved about it and it totally lived up to it (at least at the time, haven't seen since.)

  70. why don't you believe it? There's been enough stories from a variety of folks about the insanity that is the WWE locker room and the strange written and unwritten rules that exist.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I was always amused by the idea of making signs featuring totally useless pieces of quotes from famous people, like:

  77. Tell Em Steve Dave is the best podcast ever. And, thankfully at this point, Kevin Smith pretty much has nothing to do with it. All he ever talks about anymore is weed. So I, for one apparently, hope to see your sign on camera. Big thumbs up!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Tajiri/Psicosis was great, doesn't get a lot of love because it was aired after the TNN show, if i recall correctly. And the 6 man tag was clipped for years. They aired it on TV but only like 4 minutes of it. It's tough to get a cult following when you don't see the while match, like the Double Dog Collar Match.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think Ambrose would be the better choice, although he feels still more like Austin 97 and not Austin 98. Just a little step away from the top.

A quick list of some good ones. I'm not good with dates, so I'll just put what month they were:

Malenko vs Guerrero: Any matches they had between like April 95 to August 95

Rey vs Psicosis: October and November 95

    Rey vs Juvi: February/March 96

Raven and Richards vs The Pitbulls: September 95 (might be on an October episode though)

Sabu vs Scorpio from Cyber Slam 95.

That's just a few off the top of my head.

And I'm not sure if it was ever in any of the episodes, but Benoit vs Al Snow from February 95 rules and I can't recommend it enough. If you can find it, check it out.

  108. Nah, that's M Night. Shamalamadingdong.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I hate the "Cena Sucks" half of the dueling chants. It's completely counterproductive. All you're doing is reiterating that Cena is all that matters and whoever his opponent is can be safely ignored. That's fine when Cena is facing some random guy nobody cares about, but when he's facing guys like Bryan, Ambrose, Punk in the past, cheer for his opponent and show that you are supporting an alternative, at least with chants. "Cena Sucks" just proves everything revolves around him.

    ReplyDelete
  110. They avoided the especially juicy subject of his ex-wife obtaining the rights to the name Ricky Steamboat.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Raven didn't get chubby until his second go round with ECW. He was broodingly handsome in 1996. But, yes, they had great chemistry, Raven could work the crowd and the Sandman was an extremely identifiable character.

  127. I have to disagree. They both beat him clean, one main evented WM30 and the other had the longest title reign in three decades. I think they were absolutely presented as Cena's equals.

What separates Cena is the longevity. But at their peaks, Bryan and Punk were absolutely his peers, same as part-timers Rock and Lesnar. It's just that Cena's peak has been 10 years.
