Monday Night Open Mic

Howdy Blog O'Doomers!
|
Hope you have all had a good weekend and this post sees you well as we head into the holiday season.

My question today is simple as I've been re-watching some of the Legends Roundtables. In the nWo one Kevin Nash said that it was going to be either Hogan or Sting as the third man. So simple question, what if Hogan completely balks and Sting is forced to make the move. Does the angle get over as strongly? Does Sting play the Hogan role or does Nash become the "leader"? Where can the angle go from there -- does the nWo still run roughshot over the promotion for a couple years or does it become a heel machine for Hogan/Savage to conquer?

Personally my only real impression of Sting as a heel was when he was muscle for Eddie Gilbert so I don't know how well he could carry it off. Hogan was a heel early in his career and as we've all pointed out even in his days as the face of wrestling his actions were sometimes heel-ish. Plus he was kind of an egomaniac so it was a natural fit. Clearly the nWo doesn't have the same legs with Sting. Hogan going heel was a big deal in the wrestling world. Even if you didn't follow WCW you were going to hear about Hogan going heel and it would possibly make you tune in just to see how it worked. Sting going heel would be big in the WCW world but it wouldn't have had that same across-the-board reaction.

Oddly enough maybe it saves WCW for a while longer because so much money and resources wouldn't have been invested in the nWo thus forcing WCW to expand beyond its capabilities. And then again maybe the wrestling boom period doesn't happen. Hard to say.

Anyway that's all I got so TV tonight:

RAW

MNF (Carolina vs. Philly)

Only a couple NHL games and five NBA games but two are intriguing (New Orleans vs. Cleveland & San Antonio vs. L.A. Clippers)

New Gotham, Castle, Sleepy Hollow, Dancing with the Stars, etc. etc.

Daily Show as Bruce Springsteen on tonight if you are a fan.

Enjoy and come out swinging but try to keep it clean!

Comments

  1. Sting instead of Hogan obviously wouldn't have had the same impact. However, with where Sting was personally in 97, they probably wouldn't have been nearly as 'all-in' with the nWo and may have even cut it altogether around then. Hard to say how different history would have been in that scenario.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Kind of weird that they let Grumpy Cat host RAW and not Aubrey Plaza...you know, the person who actually voices the damn cat in the Christmas movie the cat is there to promote.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Starrcade would see the NWO looking for a fourth man in their cage match to determine who gets Nitro. Arn Anderson would be the mystery fourth man, and I'll let you guess how that works out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. No way Sting as the third man is anywhere near as big a deal. At the time, Hogan was the most famous wrestler in the history of the industry. Even though his popularity had wained over the years, he was still the biggest name the business ever generated. Make no mistake, it'd still be a good angle, but I've never seen Sting demonstrate the heel charisma to pull of what Hogan did. In fact, I don't think Hogan gets enough credit for totally reinventing himself and becoming the biggest draw in the business AGAIN, nearly 10 years after his peak. Pretty incredible stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  5. It pretty much had to be Hogan. He fit the theme of being an outsider, and his heel turn was more out of left field than even Sting's would have been.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Raw fans don't know who Aubrey Plaza is... and they don't care about Grumpy Cat.

I hope this segment gets shit on, and I hope someone drowns that fucking cat.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Doesn't get as big because of Hogan. He'd creative control the fuck out of it and have them beaten by like Road Wild that year

    ReplyDelete
  8. With you until the cat drowning. Swervy heel turn there, bro.

    ReplyDelete
  9. WCW's history would be completely different if it was Sting. Not that the nWo would have become another Dungeon of Doom, but they wouldn't have dominated Hogan and Hogan would have won out in the end. So on the negative side, we wouldn't have gotten as many awesome memorable moments. On the good side, the nWo angle wouldn't have lasted well beyond its expiration date.

    ReplyDelete
  10. At least Aubrey Plaza would bring attractiveness and eye-rolling snark.

With a cat, we're probably going to get Miz TV with a guest who can't talk.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hate the idea that the person that owns that cat is rolling in dough right now because they wrote text on their cat's photo.

Fuck that nonsense. Get a real job.

    ReplyDelete
  12. So for those who've read Raw spoilers, which I haven't: 4/10, better, or worse? What's my expectation for this show supposed to be?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think most know who Plaza is. Especially after we've seen her masturbate with impressive flexibility.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You'll like it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Im REALLY hoping this RAW gets the worst rating of the year

    ReplyDelete
  16. They're in Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dang who is your avatar of?

    ReplyDelete
  18. It would have been a total disaster and killed the outsider if babyface sting was the 3rd man.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wish one time they'd do a live RAW from the UK. 2 am punters screaming BARMY ARMY over every segment and firing Carling bottles into the ring. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  20. And how would they have even done it? Hogan doesnt come out and Sting just turns on Lex and Savage mid-match?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Read the spoilers, sounds like a horrible raw. The crowd was apparently quite unruly but I doubt any of that makes the air.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You liked lots of HHH segments last week, so I think you'll be OK.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Working my way through Wild Thing 90' HOLY CRAP someone end this freebirds/Pillman Zenk match!

    ReplyDelete
  24. This right here made my day. It's just, groovy.....

  25. Drunks yelling and throwing shit.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not saying you're wrong, but why are you so certain Raw fans wouldn't be aware of Parks and Rec?

Raw's mostly a male demo. Aubrey's life is mostly a male demo.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey, how did you like that Road Warriors vs. New Skyscrappers ass-kicking? Thats honestly one of my favorite extended squashes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ah gotcha, im all down for that

    ReplyDelete
  29. If HHH is as "on" as he was last week, I won't mind. But I have a feeling he can't keep up that level of "on" every week.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It at least was energetic unlike a Freebirds stall and rest hold fest.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No Hogan would've been on the WCW team and beaten all three of them with a hulk up and legdrop while savage and luger laid on the apron knocked out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Someone be sure to tell me if the Stephanie/Lana stuff is as bad in real life as it sounded on paper.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope Grumpy Cat is a way for Batista to return: Grumpy Cat is voice by Aubrey Plaza, who works on Parks and Rec with Chris Pratt, who works on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise with Big Dave. So when Lana tells Rusev to crush Grumpy Cat after Sheamus says Lana and the cat resemble each other, Dave makes the save, setting up Rusev-Dave for the Rumble or Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  34. that cat will join Team Cena and win the damn Survivor Series

    ReplyDelete
  35. Plus, it's Sting: Hall and Nash would have turned on him in three weeks, to Sting's shock.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I may be the only person who's never heard of this cat before today. What is it exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  37. And Sting would have never put any effort into his heel turn and would have been acting like a face before the end of the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Some goober on Facebook posted a photo of his or her cat, and the cat looks grumpy. Every photo is the same with a different "witty" comment on top of it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Unless it's the two of them making out in the center of the ring, completely nude, it has no chance.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Think RKO vines, but pictures with captions of a grumpy looking cat saying somewhat snarky things, like "If you're happy and you know it...go to hell."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Funny bit from the Lions/Dolphins game I was at yesterday. Really hard to due justice by typing but...

Ok so we had this total dickhead Dolphins fan in front of us all game. Every first down he'd go out to the isleway and flex his flabby muscles and point to everyone(Lions Fans) and talk shit.

So this dude in the 4th quarter is walking up the stairs apparently leaving, and drunk off his ass going

Drunk Dude - "Fucking Stafford sucks cock!"
Fins Fan - "Hell Yea!" *goes in for high five*
Drunk Dude - "Fuck you, you faggot Miami Fan!"
Fins Fan - **Promptly sits down in his seat**

Just amazing. But hard to express just over a blog post.

And then we won the game and I ran down to him after the final touchdown to give him a highfive and rub it in his face, as did the other 20 people around him who were beyond sick of his shit all game.

    Good stuff.

  43. (watches This Week in WWE)

Wait, they turned Adam Rose heel!? WHAT?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Of course it's from LAST YEAR. Love that they are so fresh and topical. What is Xavier Woods going to "Get Ebola" at SummerSlam next year, since that will still be a hot topic?

    ReplyDelete
  45. What if its Stephanie showing her who's boss to get Stephanie more heat?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can't get Ebola until 2016; Wikipedia says the cat debuted in September 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Grumpy Cat is taking over next week BROTHER

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha, im a Freebirds mark, but 1988-1991 Freebirds were DEATH

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ahem -- the Freebirds are Hayes, Roberts, and Gordy. They ARE NOT Hayes and Garvin. Get it right.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yea, I just cant see Stinger properly getting at the crowd to the point of shit being thrown in the ring like Hulk

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm watching WWE One Night Stand: Extreme Rules 2008. This show was filmed just up the street (if you wanna call I-5 a street) from me but I've never seen it. Hardy doing the dive off a tractor trailer to beat umanga in the opener was pretty sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  61. ... was the original three-man unit ever called the Fabulous Freebirds, or is that a Hayes/Garvin-only thing?

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't know if they ever used the term "Fabulous", but they were most assuredly the Freebirds. The ONLY Freebirds.

    ReplyDelete
  63. They were always the Fabulous Freebirds.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Isn't it a totally WCW move to come up with this kick-ass angle and not even have a payoff for it until the last minute?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Freebirds 2.0 weren't quite as good but had better theme music. Yes I like the Garvin version too, not as much as the original version of course, but I enjoyed the wcw freebirds.
I just wish the guy who told me Kane was a better worker than Gordy for a big man would pop up to resume our argument in this thread.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Badstreet USA is the G.O.A.T. of theme music. Not sure why they felt the need for a new song.

    ReplyDelete
  67. According to the spoilers I read Sting came out tonight and wrestled Orton for the WWE title.
    #NoNotReally

    ReplyDelete
  68. Probably because their concept for the "I'm a Freebird" video was so bad ass.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hulk was always going to be it. They just worried he'd pull out like he did months earlier during his heel tweener phase

    ReplyDelete
  70. We should get together some time and put together fake spoilers for one of these shows. See if we can get them to stick.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Grumpy Cat is old for Internets people, but it's still quite popular today. But, it's funny/cute for 10 seconds and then you move on.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Cavs play way too much music during the games.

    ReplyDelete
  73. If we could get a fake spoiler report and a fake review of the show up after it could really fuck with a lot of people.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Btw, here's the Grumpy cat trailer if you haven't had the pleasure

    http://youtu.be/WFKGMecPep8

    ReplyDelete
  75. That's what I mean. It was never a guarantee until he walked out of that curtain.

    ReplyDelete
  76. SPOILER ALERT:

    ...

Daniel Bryan returns tonight... and gets curbstomped back onto the injured list by Seth Rollins.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yep, he's jealous of someone in a bunny costume.

    ReplyDelete
  78. why not just post one now to see if anyone bites?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Well the movie is coming out in a week or so...so it actually IS topical for once. Fleeting but topical

    ReplyDelete
  80. GODDAMMIT, DUNN! WHY CAN'T YOU QUIT THE COMPANY?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I made it through 26 seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm thinking one of the old timers would've killed the cat and eaten or some such shit if this had happened back in the day.

    ReplyDelete
  83. As was the live execution of the new song. It didn't make WCW look like bush league hicks at all.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I sat through Rikishi in drag Stinkfacing Bischoff, I can take anything

    ReplyDelete
  85. This is the main thing I want to see, if it's really as bad as it sounds. How dare someone get more heat than Stephanie/HHH!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Damn, that would be brilliant if they actually did that. Even/especially if DB isn't actually cleared to come back.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Actually -- that would be genius if he could take it.

    ReplyDelete
  88. You there?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I did once back when RajahWWF was still a thing. So childish.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Maybe Sting doesn't stop lifting weights?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'd say it went off without a hitch! I know I definitely didn't throw that Clash on as soon as it hit the network just to relive any kind of train wreck that occurred.

    ReplyDelete
  92. we really need a shoot from someone that worked on the WCW production team. I'm sure that would be a fun one. What ever happened to that Craig Leathers guy anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Then he wouldn't be able to fit into that awesome bodysuit.

    ReplyDelete
  94. This should be a win and here they are down ten.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Does anyone know when the sports illustrated archive website was ruined. I used to like going and reading old issues and it was really cool how they were all scanned and stuff, but I went on there last night and it's just awful now.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Has a good Taker/Edge TLC main event if I remember right as well

    ReplyDelete
  97. Whoever they cast as the voice of the cat was an awful call. They sound just like the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  98. NBA teams play way too much music during the games
    ftfy

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's kind of tough to do that when you have to get their State of Georgia-appointed social worker to help. I'm kidding; people with intellectual disabilities are too hard-working to put on WCW shows.

I'll bet Jackie Crockett would do it for a few bucks.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The heel authority figure castrating over heel acts for no good reason. A real tried and true staple of successful booking!

    ReplyDelete
  101. This is the Sting we needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kcbQnegCR8

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yep, I enjoyed the hell outta the match.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Haven't been there in over a year but that was pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Lol what was the fake spoiler

    ReplyDelete
  105. Batista Michaels was good in addition to what Onita100 said.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I don't like Lebron's humble attitude, I want the guy that wanted to win 10 championships. I appreciate all the passing but please put some fucking points on the board.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Taker bumped his ass off too

    ReplyDelete
  108. Ah so that's why Raw's been watchable the past week or 2. Vince discovered cat memes and adorable cat videos and has been obsessively streaming them. Yeah...

    ReplyDelete
  109. That's one thing I would get rid of. Does anyone want to hear that shit?

    ReplyDelete
  110. He should have. Edge built Taker up like a dominant champion.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Sold at Duty Free Store, I hope?

    ReplyDelete
  112. I can't wait until all the other meme characters show up. Scumbag Steve will be a great heel.

So just now he came out of his room and was like, "We need to have this on Raw!"

    ReplyDelete
  114. It's like a game to see what's going to work and what won't. Right now I don't think having Waiters and Irving will work. Still early of course but that's my initial observation.

    ReplyDelete
  115. When Mike Adamele is better than the commentary on the WWE's flagship show I don't know how to react.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Jesus Christ, that was awful.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Fuck Waiters, cut him. I'm so pissed they didn't package him up to be sent to Minnesota.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I'd say the Warriors are ranked 29 spots too high in the EPSN power poll.

    Remember the choices you make.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Well he wasent that great in the ring

    ReplyDelete
  124. Or just add Waiters and get Corey Brewer.

    ReplyDelete
  125. the persona itself should have gotten him over, no?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Watching some 1995 ECW, Hardcore Heaven. Um... The idea of bringing in job guys to get beat up is kind of a different way to stoke the crowd is interesting/different. But, whoever Big Val Puccio was, he wasn't great.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It actually was a pretty good success I'd say because I can still most of his feuds and I can't say that about many mid card acts. The WWE booked him on that losing streak angle and it killed his career.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Corey Brewer isn't very good unless your putting him back in the ACC

    ReplyDelete
  132. CM GRUMP, CM GRUMP

    ReplyDelete
  133. it didn't fail, he was very prominent on Smackdown when the brands were kept separate. He had a very long US title reign and good feuds with Benoit & Matt Hardy. The gave him a losing streak to punish him for something or other, but it actually got him over for a face turn. Then he moved to Raw and they did jack-shit with him.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I was speaking strictly to why I didnt get behind him. Being that was like 2006 and I was super deep into ROH mode, I judged guys more based on their ring work I guess

    Well, this brings me back.

    ReplyDelete
  136. (CM stands for Cat Meme)

    ReplyDelete
  137. we watched SD in the mid 00's, we're just better people

    ReplyDelete
  138. I don't remember which ECW event it was, but the opener being a jobber tag team match with Joey Styles mocking WCW up until the unsurprising 911 interruption was golden.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I vaguely remember the Hardy feud, but that's it. didn't the have a free throw shooting contest or something?

    ReplyDelete
  140. They punished him because he made fun of the drug-test doctors, saying that they got college degrees to look at dudes penises and watching them piss all day.

And this was a super-sensitive time after Guerrero's death and the Benoit murders.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I have to be honest, if they had Doge hosting Raw, I would watch.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I remember Wrestlecrap describing it as "even in virtual form, Kevin Nash is lazy."

    ReplyDelete
  143. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©November 10, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Yep, I remember most of his heel feuds. Kane, Benoit, Flair, Hardy, Rey, and then both Hardys.

    ReplyDelete
  144. maybe he wasn't at ROH levels, but in 06, he was waaaay ahead of a lot of his mid 00's WWE contemporaries. definitely someone who I looked forward to watching wrestle.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Starting him off with a jobber squash on PPV certainly didn't help.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Ha I forgot about that one.

Speaking of Thunder I remember being so stoked to play that game simply cause it had a cage match option, as at that time you didnt really see cage matches in wrestling games. The game, like Nitro, absolutely blew however

    ReplyDelete
  147. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©November 10, 2014 at 5:55 PM

    That, plus pizza eating contests.

    ReplyDelete
  148. There are a few of us out there. Some years were...better than others, but I still identify myself as a smackdown guy.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I watched that a year so a go for the first time. I can't remember the opponent but I do remember the act not coming off really well. Like the fans didn't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Nobody beats Hardy in a pizza eating contest.

    ReplyDelete
  151. He beat Benoit for the belt like a month before Benoit did what he did, so I kind of imagine them sort of them naturally cooling off the character.

But this is a period I definitely wasn't watching.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Evander Holyfield got involved, it was a good angle for the mid card

    ReplyDelete
  153. Waiters is such a mess on the court, I hate watching him

    ReplyDelete
  154. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©November 10, 2014 at 5:56 PM

That just gets truer and truer by the day.

    ReplyDelete
  155. yeah, they found MVP had a heart condition and couldn't wrestle, so they had him & Hardy face off in every contest imaginable to keep the feud going. Worked too, b/c that feud was over. They even had MVP & Hardy as tag champs doing that "enemies forced to team" bit, and it didn't suck!

    ReplyDelete
  156. The guy flat out makes me sick. Just a disgusting pathetic human being.

    ReplyDelete
  157. guys, enough Grumpy Cat...Bruce Campbell is reprising his role as Ash! Everything in the world is glorious!

    ReplyDelete
  158. I heard Vince was going to try and fly in Paul Meekin to challenge Matt for that title but all the army freight planes were still over in Afghanistan.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I do recall the Kane Inferno match and they set MVP's back on fire

    ReplyDelete
  160. Apropos of nothing, I wonder if Pat Sajak has ever bung Vanna White.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  168. Football in the groin has a football in the groin.

    ReplyDelete
  169. IIRC, MVP was really bad when he first started in WWE. Then they hid him for a while in dark matches where he was learning from Benoit and he got a lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  170. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©November 10, 2014 at 5:59 PM

Forget Bo, have Barrett come out to tell them the bad news.

    ReplyDelete
