I'm gonna level with ya here, this may be the stupidest press release I've ever received in my inbox. Although Macho Man's "Be A Man, Hulk" from 12 years ago still holds the honor, I think. Hopefully Randy Orton gives the cat an RKO.
My guess would be that it's because the Muppets have actual mainstream credibility and a long history, whereas Grumpy Cut is a fucking cat on the internet.
The Muppets have been around long enough to have been part of people's childhoods. They also had movies and a TV show. Grumpy Cat...how is this going to be a movie? The pictures/captions are funny, but I will still be trying to figure it out when the movie makes $300M.
And don't forget, cats are cats and totally unpredictable animals. It'd be pretty awesome if John Cena picked up Grumpy only for Grumpy to immediately start swiping and hissing at him.
Hey, give them credit. This is a pop culture reference that's at least semi-recent (wherein that term can be understood to mean "within the past 10 years").
Amazingly, they actually did discuss Orton's meme-ness on one of the Network spacefiller shows last week. I forget if it was "this week in WWE" or the RAW pre-show (one kind of bled into the other), but they interviewed the Australian guy who created the clips.
Good riddance. I can't believe they're only giving him 10 pages in a Thor annual, surely he's already complaining that he didn't get a forty book crossover year long storyline.
If it means Aubrey Plaza is coming on RAW, even in voice only, then that's more entertaining than pretty much anything they've done since Brock dropped Cena on his head sixteen times
Or it's just a really bad idea based on their inability to ever get anything like this over with the live crowds. Perish the thought that people are judging this based on a decade of poor performances in this area, NEVER. They've had such a phenomenal track record of making these bits funny, right?
There is nothing better than the guys that pretend to like utter shit in some bizarre superiority contest with the posters that don't, as though liking a valueless internet meme makes one better somehow, lol.
Yeah, the Muppets are more comparable to, say, Bob Barker where they're kind of old entertainers there for nostalgia (yeah, they had a movie out, but still). Grumpy Cat just looks like it's frowning.
I could sorta get behind it if they made it "communicate" by having someone write meme text on a dry erase board and hold it under the cat, though.
BRILLIANT point, unless they somehow do a remarkable job in presenting this (LOLOLOLOL), this will almost certainly bomb with the live crowd, just like almost every other pop culture thing WWE tries, it's almost like they enjoy punishing themselves.
I just don't get the uproar over this one, grumpy cat is more mainstream then most of the shitty hosts they have on so why wouldn't Tardar Sauce host? Your telling me Nene, or Kathy griffin, or muppets are any better? If anything we should have expected the eventual Grumpy Cat Raw.
It's fine in small doses, but gets insufferable if over-used. But my issue with her is that she looks like she has down syndrome and acts like just saying "penis" a lot is an entire joke in itself. Her attempts to be dirty just make her look dumb.
Why did the IWC like when the Muppets hosted Raw but hate this?
ReplyDeleteWell, she's a "guest star" rather than "host": is that any better?
ReplyDeleteMy guess would be that it's because the Muppets have actual mainstream credibility and a long history, whereas Grumpy Cut is a fucking cat on the internet.
ReplyDeleteThe Muppets have been around long enough to have been part of people's childhoods. They also had movies and a TV show. Grumpy Cat...how is this going to be a movie? The pictures/captions are funny, but I will still be trying to figure it out when the movie makes $300M.
ReplyDeleteIt's name is Tardar Sauce. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteGrumpy cat is cute and funny and has more of a personality than 75% of the WWE roster.
ReplyDeleteI hated the muppets too.
ReplyDeleteIf they made Grumpy cat movie more like the Garfield animated movies from the 80s it could have worked.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget, cats are cats and totally unpredictable animals. It'd be pretty awesome if John Cena picked up Grumpy only for Grumpy to immediately start swiping and hissing at him.
ReplyDeleteSame Hollywood idiots who are making an Angry Birds movie for release in July 2016... about five years after the game peaked in popularity.
ReplyDeleteBut I suspect it will be more like the recent Garfield movies which are the worst garbage ever.
ReplyDeleteI know :( I'm just saying it had the potential to work if they had someone smart at the helm.
ReplyDeletehey i like this idea and grumpy cat :)
ReplyDeleteGood :) I'm saddened by all the cat haters on the blog.
ReplyDeleteThis might be the point where the WWE jumped the shark.
ReplyDeleteReally? Out of all the things WWE has done in the past to jump the shark, this is the one where it crosses the line for you?
ReplyDeletei think the moment they made had jumped the shark with me was when hogan beat yokozuna at wm8 . or maybe it just made me mad.
ReplyDeleteI said it in the other thread, I'll say it here again.
ReplyDeleteShit like this is why people feel embarrassed to say they watch wrestling.
You mean WM 9.
ReplyDeleteNot for cat lovers.
ReplyDeleteSeriously - I'd say having a hologram appear to end a match within the past month was sort of silly too
ReplyDeleteReading what Stephanie said it looks like there I'll be some 'hilarious' skits trying to keep the cat happy.
ReplyDeleteNothing is unfunnier than the WWE doing comedy. This will be awful.
Exactly the problem. They'll try way too hard to shoehorn comedy in and it will fail miserably.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure what WWE has planned will be bad, but it'd be pretty fucking awesome if they had CM Punk do the voice over for Grumpy.
ReplyDeleteIs the cat real or a puppet? I'm more behind the times than Vince
ReplyDeleteThe cat is very real and she hates you.
ReplyDeleteHey, give them credit. This is a pop culture reference that's at least semi-recent (wherein that term can be understood to mean "within the past 10 years").
ReplyDeletethen he could launch into a promo about how cats have a right to hiss at who they want or purr at who they want.
ReplyDeleteC'mon VJ, defend this shit.
ReplyDeleteAmazingly, they actually did discuss Orton's meme-ness on one of the Network spacefiller shows last week. I forget if it was "this week in WWE" or the RAW pre-show (one kind of bled into the other), but they interviewed the Australian guy who created the clips.
ReplyDeleteIt's real, but I don't know what version will be showing up on Raw.
ReplyDelete*reads press release*
ReplyDelete*goes immediately to youtube to watch the 4 Horsemen beat up Dusty Rhodes and other wrestlers from the 80's*
LOL. Why didn't you just write "Because we're old men"? It would've been shorter.
ReplyDeleteCM Punk: Hmm...become a writer for the biggest comic book publisher in the world...or go back to WWE and cut promos against an internet meme?
ReplyDeletehttp://marvel.com/news/comics/23636/welcome_to_marvel_cm_punk_-_hope_you_survive_the_experience
He's never coming back.
Yeah... other than Sheamus and Beaker, wasn't that whole episode a waste?
ReplyDeleteChucky is somewhere, shaking his damn head.
ReplyDeleteThey also cool-dad it with adding Anerica's Funniest Home Videos sound effects to the videos
ReplyDeleteHonestly, that's still dumber than Grumpy Cat
ReplyDelete*Skinned the cat*
ReplyDeleteIt's a Lifetime movie
ReplyDeleteThat will probably twice the ratings of RAW
Good riddance. I can't believe they're only giving him 10 pages in a Thor annual, surely he's already complaining that he didn't get a forty book crossover year long storyline.
ReplyDeleteIf it means Aubrey Plaza is coming on RAW, even in voice only, then that's more entertaining than pretty much anything they've done since Brock dropped Cena on his head sixteen times
ReplyDeleteThey're "too cool" for this. The cat will "devalue" wrestling. This is where "wwe jumped the shark". Wrestling sucks and this makes it worse.
ReplyDeleteI eagerly await the presence of our feline overlord on raw
JR: ITS ROBOCOP
ReplyDeleteBoom!!!
ReplyDeleteI love when someone corrects another poster on a wrestling mistake. It's like a rejection in basketball.
*sucked the dick*
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by version?
ReplyDeleteI don't give a fuck either way about this because it will jist replace whatever usually awful comedy segment that would have aired in its place.
ReplyDeleteI just want them to write a compelling and coherent storyline
"We need a skit with poop, a skit with vomit, and one with poop and vomit!"
ReplyDelete- Vince
Or it's just a really bad idea based on their inability to ever get anything like this over with the live crowds. Perish the thought that people are judging this based on a decade of poor performances in this area, NEVER. They've had such a phenomenal track record of making these bits funny, right?
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than the guys that pretend to like utter shit in some bizarre superiority contest with the posters that don't, as though liking a valueless internet meme makes one better somehow, lol.
Now that's someone who could be a guest host.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that semi killed it.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the Muppets are more comparable to, say, Bob Barker where they're kind of old entertainers there for nostalgia (yeah, they had a movie out, but still). Grumpy Cat just looks like it's frowning.
ReplyDeleteI could sorta get behind it if they made it "communicate" by having someone write meme text on a dry erase board and hold it under the cat, though.
"Bo-lieve!"
"No. Leave."
We ask that you use the hash tag #YesSeriouslyItsGrumpyCatWeAreSorryInAdvance while discussing this segment on social media.
ReplyDeleteIt might not be that bad. But the commentary. Fuck it all, the *commentary*. :(
ReplyDeleteThe cat still can't smile, Maggle!
ReplyDeleteYou're the one talking about superiority not I.
ReplyDeleteOnly way this is worth it is if Snitsky comes out and punts grumpy cat like he did that baby.
ReplyDeleteBRILLIANT point, unless they somehow do a remarkable job in presenting this (LOLOLOLOL), this will almost certainly bomb with the live crowd, just like almost every other pop culture thing WWE tries, it's almost like they enjoy punishing themselves.
ReplyDeleteITT: Grumpy Smarks
ReplyDeleteI just don't get the uproar over this one, grumpy cat is more mainstream then most of the shitty hosts they have on so why wouldn't Tardar Sauce host? Your telling me Nene, or Kathy griffin, or muppets are any better? If anything we should have expected the eventual Grumpy Cat Raw.
ReplyDeletelol u mad bro?
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely some folks in here who defended Sith Lord Bray last month and are calling this the lowest point in WWE? Wut?
ReplyDeleteThe trailer dropped last week; at least they didn't animate the cat
ReplyDeleteGood for him.
ReplyDeleteI hate living in a world where I have to upvote that comment.
ReplyDeleteThat… doesn't help as much as you might think it does.
ReplyDeleteIs this sarcasm?
ReplyDeleteThe guy worked from the bottom for wrestling, now he has fun with other pursuits...and somehow this makes him an ass?
CM Punk is this generations Jericho.
ReplyDeletePopular, easy hall of fame accolades--but never the top guy.
There are a number of fans who still attest he could have been top guy if not for mismanagement.
He got out of wrestling full time while the getting out was good.
Loves wrestling but has other goals he wants to accomplish.
i liked "be a man hulk" coz Randy Savage rulz and Hogan sucks brotherjackdude
ReplyDeleteI cross my fingers he will really turn out that way (= not "needing" to go back to wrestling and be able to return on his own terms).
ReplyDeleteUgh. I hate Aubrey Plaza. She tries way too hard to be weird and "dirty".
ReplyDeleteBecause Imports are fucking awesome. They were one of the best shows on television in the 1970s, and some of the movies were grreat
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of deadpan delivery?
ReplyDeleteA women put pictures of her angry looking cat online.
ReplyDeleteShit went viral
Turns out she's a brilliant opertunist and she made an entire line of merchandise based on the meme's popularity.
Now it's getting a movie. It's ridiculous.
The only way this would be worth it is if they also bring in Ernest Miller and have him cut a promo on the cat.
ReplyDeleteIt's fine in small doses, but gets insufferable if over-used. But my issue with her is that she looks like she has down syndrome and acts like just saying "penis" a lot is an entire joke in itself. Her attempts to be dirty just make her look dumb.
ReplyDelete"It's fine in small doses, but gets insufferable if over-used"
ReplyDeleteAs opposed to over the top non-subtle delivery? (I'm looking at you John Cena)
"she looks like she has down syndrome"
I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and guess that you've never MET an actual person with down syndrome then.
Here's the problem -- they won't allow her to actually be funny, if you find her funny.
ReplyDeleteSo good luck with that.
