Moved to a thread where people are actually at: I agree with whoever said last night that this thing with Ryback is just a program to keep Russev hot to him getting his final comeuppance at Mania. At this point, now that Bryan's back, I'm wondering if they might be sizing up Reigns/Cena as the match to have, and if so I have no idea who they'll put Russev with. Maybe Orton? Ziggler?
As happy as I am Bryan's back, I have 2 bad feelings. 1) That Vince keeps thinking "Bryan's too small for Brock, no one will believe it!", and 2) the Andre battle royale will be returning this year, featuring many guys who should NOT be in there.

  35. The Authority coming back at all, let alone after only ONE MONTH, is typical terrible WWE booking in every way. Destroying a hyped stipulation, building around a heel GM, and overexposing HHH and Stephanie--- some of the worst tropes of WWE.
    That said....
The actual closing segment was pretty awesome, IMHO, and made Rollins come off as the most evil, hate able heel they've had in fucking forever.
Secondly, at this point I think the only way to "end" the Authority storyline is to turn them face. Displacing them makes no sense because they OWN THE FUCKING COMPANY. They're in charge, and fans won't buy anything else. (Oh, Mick Foley is GM? Uhm, ok.) They need to beat HHH so bad that he realizes his wrongs and turns face and runs WWE as a neutral Tunney-esque GM. If they're smart, that happens after HHH's Mania 3 match.
But they're WWE, so most likely he stays heel GM for the rest of our lives.

  41. You know what would be a fun match? Rusev vs. Dolph, title for title. Rusev is this crushing monster, and Dolph is the plucky underdog babyface that people could get behind. You really could go either way with that match.

Last night was the ultimate example of a cosmic cockblock. The WWE dressed up in its sexiest lingerie and was preparing to do a personal strip tease in the form of Bryan's promo... then promptly threw clothes back on, dropped a cinder block on the fans' collective junk and called them morons. Or something, I'm not good with analogies.

The Authority storyline is morbidly depressing as a fan, is what I'm going for here.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Same to you, my friend!

    ReplyDelete

I wonder if that whole deal was sort of the physical embodiment of the Vince/HHH struggle that goes on show by show now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. They could do worse for Rollins than turning Hunter face after some kind of Rollins betrayal. Maybe Rollins blames Hunter for a failed cash-in or Rollins doesn't feel appreciated for all he did for the Authority.

But Stephanie has got to be off TV for this to happen. Crowds will cheer Hunter. They couldn't be paid to cheer for Steph. Likewise she can't be on Rollins' side either because it would inevitably be about her and Hunter and siphon Rollins' heat.

Rollins feels unappreciated by Hunter, curb stomps Steph and then boom Hunter wants revenge. Amend that last part because with the wave of uproar against Domestic Violence they probably can't have Rollins curb stomp Steph. But the heart of it remains the same.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well HHH coming back to wrestle a match isn't the same as HHH & Stephanie coming back as heel authority figures. The latter is the major booking problem that long term makes it impossible for this product to be any good.

Don't even know. There's just a distinction between money-drawing, entertaining heel factions and the kind of overbearing, domineering heel factions that frustrate you and make you want to turn off the product. One can guess where the Authority storyline falls, even if Shitbag Seth is King Douche of Douche Mountain now.

  68. Don't worry, Vince had that covered

    ReplyDelete
  69. I dunno, I think it was a great storyline and if they just need to go with the authority figure trope, I'd rather them do it with the best heel characters in the company than a revolving door of random idiots. You knew they were coming back, and they did it in a way that made Cena human and vulnerable. I don't remember who I read saying this, but it was really well put: it was a problem Cena couldn't F-U his way out of.
I thought it was a really good Raw overall, one of the best in weeks, if not months.

Well, I guess I do get it. Punk is the one who blurred the lines intentionally, to great effect. We're still marking for him nearly a year after he left. But I still find it tiresome.

    ReplyDelete
  75. HHH & Stephanie as heel managers leading a top heel faction? Fine. Personally I'd rather never see them on TV again but obviously that's not gonna happen. So ok, if they need to lead a heel stable I can see some positives.

But having them as the authority figures who make all the decisions and control the match making of the baby faces they're feuding with? Absolute worst trope in pro wrestling and one of the biggest reasons why WWE has become so incredibly hard to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Sexy Flexy Biff KensingtonDecember 30, 2014 at 7:40 AM

The first problem is, the Authority figure trope is crustier than Betty White's taint. The fact that the Authority is 'the best' we could hope for is endemic of the problem as a whole: we as fans deserve better. But to take umbrage with the Authority for a moment, their motivations are helter-skelter. They're up and down, nothing makes a lot of sense, and short of Survivor Series they always look strong. Vince McMahon is a far more aesthetically pleasing heel villain to play off; Triple H and Stephanie just aren't that fun in the role. But you're entitled to your opinion, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  77. You could have said all this and your point would have been just as effective without causing me to vomit with the Betty White line. Damn you sir. Damn you.

    ReplyDelete

  80. Sexy Flexy Biff KensingtonDecember 30, 2014 at 7:43 AM

I love Betty White too. But if she's buck-naked and spreading her legs, you have to think you're looking at a salt flat.

    ReplyDelete
  81. As great as Rollins was in that last segment, and as much as D-Bry's return is everything that keeps sucking me back into pro wrestling... HOLY FUCK, the idea of Raw next week starting with a 30-minute smarmy "we're baaaaaaack!" HHH/Steph promo means there's zero chance I watch next wrk's show.

There's heels building heat, and then there's trolling your audience to the point where your show is an unwatchable jerk-off session. HHH & Steph returning is the latter, obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How do you know?! Her genitals might be the most pristine and well-manicured savannah in history!

Rue McClanahan, perhaps. There's only so many vaginal care treatments one can find in Saint Olaf, Minnesota. Betty's taint is probably a Dust Bunny.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Pshaw, I tell you! Betty don't need no treatments! She's a marvel of vaginal exquisiteness!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Sexy Flexy Biff KensingtonDecember 30, 2014 at 7:48 AM

The only marvel in Betty White's pants is trying to find the right wrinkle.

    ReplyDelete
  87. That might be a matter of opinion (marking for him during this year).
Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks less and less of the guy every time he opens his mouth. I kinda wish he'd just keep his opinions to himself, and I wish he'd have more positive things to say. Even though he has some legitimate beefs, it just feels like everything with him has an air of negativity and defiance, and to me that's a bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Please, please, please go with Brock vs. Bryan at Mania. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  89. It worked out pretty phenomenally a year ago. If they want to just do a sequel of that, I can live with it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Problem with your last: Rollins would be turned face by the fans if he did that.

Also: I did notice a fair number of complaints about the DC audience... maybe they're psychics, and saw this coming from the beginning of the show? (shrug)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Some of you seem to have enjoyed the final segment with Rollins threatening to break Edge's neck. I thought it was stupid, and here are a few reasons.

What, Edge couldn't just get way before the held him down?

What, he couldn't fight back enough to slide out of the ring?

How is Cena responsible in any way for Rollins' actions, regardless of what Rollins says?

I know it was just a way of bringing back HHH & Steph, but it just felt last minute and forced. It probably was. I suppose I may be picking nits, but it seemed like such a horrible segment, especially when compared with DBry.

  96. What you're describing is heels being effective heels. Yes, it sucks that the owner's daughter, son-in-law and their associates are the only ones allowed to get over as such (well, not for Rollins, and getting him over as a megastar makes the whole thing worth it if that's the case), but that's wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Bryan vs. Brock, Reigns vs. Cena, Hunter vs. Sting, Orton vs. Rollins, Bray vs. Ambrose(you know it's a running joke now and that they'll keep going through Mania) better looking card than what I was reckoning before.

  115. Jameis Winston's unflappable clutch 4th quarter play and unbeaten FSU record.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Agree about the HHH/Steph return but I didn't like Rollins in that segment at all. But it's not his fault. He's booked like too much of a pussy begging for the Authority to come back. He has the security guys behind him. How many people do you need fighting your battles for you? Some might say it's a bit comparable to Rock having the corporation behind him or Hogan with the nWo, but they didn't look like total pussies that can't do ANYTHING on their own. I dunno. The whole "chosen one with the authority figures backing them" thing is played out and, in my opinion, makes Rollins look very, very weak.

  127. But then the two guys I recruit to join me would become more successful than me and I'd be stuck banging Luna Vachon.

    Is it worth it?

    ReplyDelete
  128. It's X-Pac heat. I don't want to see them get beat. I just want them to go away.

    ReplyDelete
  129. It's not effective heeling if the fans, and I'm using myself as an example, don't want to even see said heels on the TV shows.

HHH and Stephanie are out there as the focus of the show because THEY WANT TO BE, not because their segments are effective and the fans are enjoying what they're involved in.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Naw, it's kinda his fault. His delivery was scattered and stilted. To be honest, he was kinda all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  131. The only thing they haven't done is pulled their guns on an opponent running towards the end zone, arresting him right there on the field. If they were playing Oregon at home, I could see that happening somewhere around 35-7... mid 2nd quarter?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Well I'll backtrack and edit it to either it happens or is rumored to happen. Happened at 27 and 28. Rumored to happen at 30. And Im hoping you don't remember the rumors surrounding 29 enough to dispute my claim that it was rumored to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  133. WHAT IF the fans resent someone who hasn't been around for a year just strolling in and winning the Rumble and boo Bryan if HE wins? It's possible it might create some kind of booking paradox that destroys the entire universe.

    ReplyDelete
  137. That's true. I personally think he totally sucks but am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here cause I don't think anybody could pull off a segment as dumb as that one was.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Wrestlemania 30 and the few weeks of Raw before that were pretty great. The 5 or so months of Authority-centric TV after Summerslam 2013 was some of the worst, most backfiring product that WWE has ever produced.

I wouldn't cll that "working out phenomenally", especially when the still Authority-centric period after May 2014 has been the absolute worst WWE-TV since 1995.

    ReplyDelete
  139. When I first read that, I thought you typed "Unfappable."

    ReplyDelete
  140. I would run Rusev/Ziggler. Ziggler is perfect in the underdog babyface role and people would buy him taking copious amounts of punishment and still winning. Plus he's the first to defeat Rusev in a way via countout so the history is there.

    ReplyDelete

  145. Rusev has dominated Ziggler numerous times and a count out victory in a team match really doesn't count.

It's Philadelphia, they'll follow the plan.

  147. I thought it's seemed pretty positive here thus far. Relatively speaking.

  149. OK, so have we talked the Ascension? What the fuck was that??? Yikes. These guys should be trading wins with Los Matadores on Main Event before Mania time.

This anti-Ascension stuff is kind of frustrating. They've had one match on the main roster. Can we give them a few weeks before we write them off?

    ReplyDelete
  154. Looked like a Memphis team from 1989.

    ReplyDelete
  155. If they weren't talked up in NXT for years, they just screamed indie jobber gimmick from look to working

    ReplyDelete
  156. It would've been more effective if the pacing was better. Cena took FOREVER to come out, too. That didn't help things.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I have included the links to the PTBN Greatest Song of the 90's tournament above

    ReplyDelete
  158. That was....those guys were totally underwhelming.

    ReplyDelete
  159. X-Pac heat isn't a real thing.

    ReplyDelete
  160. As they deserved. Those dudes absolutely suck. Road Warriors gimmick and they both look like the doughiest jobby jobbers that have ever jobbed? Terrible. Just turn them into a fucking comedy gimmick and get it over with.

    ReplyDelete
  161. A lot of stuff about dog fucking, which I consider neutral rather than positive or negative.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Bye! No one cares!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Where do you put Bryan on the card? Brock Lesnar?

    ReplyDelete
  164. Can it be defined? YES.
    Can examples be given? YES.

    It's real, Mike. Unlike Santa.

  165. You're not just right. You're HIV Positive.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Too bad that went off the air. When do we get the chance to see Orton, Cena and the Big Show all in a prominent position on a show?

    ReplyDelete
  167. First impressions and all that.

    ReplyDelete
  168. If they insist on Reigns, would Bryan getting stretchered out of the Rumble after someone "pillmanizes" his arm with Reigns making the save and throwing out whoever did it be enough or would their best bet at that point just to be Reigns taking out Bryan and heel turn?

    ReplyDelete
  169. Yeah but they look like shit especially for the gimmick they're doing, and they've sucked in NXT (despite the push) for years now. It's not like it's the first Ascension match anyone's ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  170. It's disturbing but they seemed pretty positive in their discussion on it.

  171. Sexy Flexy Biff KensingtonDecember 30, 2014 at 8:12 AM

I know. It's one of those deals where there's room for improvement, and the tag division lacks the mauling tag team right now. I'd rather give them a shot to evolve and tweak the gimmick and see if they can make it work.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Like a fucked up Haley's comet, every 76 commercial breaks

    ReplyDelete
  173. At this point, they should just make NXT a full blown alternative and move people back and forth when they need refreshing. At this point, I'd pay money to see a NXT show before a WWE show and I'd rather see a NXT PPV before a WWE PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Heels who make fans change the channel or stop watching the show is absolutely a real thing. See HHH's run in the early 2000s.

    ReplyDelete
  175. It's better than Cena vs. Rusev. Put both titles on the line and give it a high-stakes feel. WrestleMania fans will go crazy for Dolph, and they won't remember those previous finishes.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Just watched the match...what a terrible idea..have them debut against a team that already wrestled a long match..Nothing that bad about the squash it self but the whole getup has that 10-15% chance of getting over.

This is kind of the problem with NXT. it's fun but they come up with these indie gimmicks that are either unlikely to get over or have to repackage the guy into something other than the character he has been building the past couple years

    ReplyDelete
  177. A power team, where one guy looks 5'11", 225 kind of defeats the purpose from the get-go. But I do see your point.

    ReplyDelete
  178. If they had better faces, I'd still like to see a face get "demoted", snap because of it and get a heel stable together to force his way back up, reigning havoc everywhere

    ReplyDelete
  179. Yeah, because frankly...sometimes you feel like it, and sometimes you don't.....knowwhatImean?

    ReplyDelete
  180. How many bottles of water does Rollins go through per show on his hair?

    ReplyDelete
  181. The vampire/goth gimmick at least fit what these dudes look like. New Age ROAD WARRIORS is laughable considering the "big guy" is just fat and the small guy gets physically dwarfed by Damien Sandow.

If you're gonna do that gimmick, then pair up Ryback and Titus in face paint or something. These two dudes just don't look imposing in the slightest.

  182. Sexy Flexy Biff KensingtonDecember 30, 2014 at 8:15 AM

Ironically, the team they most closely resemble (Demolition) weren't as big as they appeared to be. The height of Ax and Smash is actually pretty comparable to the Ascension guys (6'3" and 6'2" to 6'4" and 6'2").

    ReplyDelete
  183. There's probably a gigantic surplus of water backstage now that HHH doesn't sports-entertainz full-time.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I'd be okay with them working together

    ReplyDelete
  185. Yup. Demos were flabby for their run. They were bigger, but they weren't that muscular.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I don't see why not!
