BoD New Year's Eve Thread

I'm home. Are you?

If you are, come by and hang out, talk about whatever.

NBA action, plenty of NHL, the Orange Bowl happens. Wrestlemania XXX being replayed on the Network live stream.

Happy New Year, BoDers. Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999. Which means I'm going to get on Napster and download everything I can before Y2K hits.

Ugh. Girlfriend has decided tonight is the night to marathon more of the first season of Hell's Kitchen. Welcome to the New Year, same as the old year.

Although, honestly, I can't really think of anything I'd rather do.

  6. Ah, Wrestlemania XXX. First one I've ever seen live and in person. My favorite wrestling trip and memories ever. It'll probably never be repeated, will it?

I mean, Daniel Bryan in the main event, the fans rejecting the handpicked #1 contender to put him there, especially at the Royal Rumble, HHH wrestling a match while being in charge of the fed, Brock Lesnar wrestling a high-profile match, Bray Wyatt doing a job to an established veteran when he probably should have won, Cena winning.

When are we EVER going to see that again?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm extremely sick, so I'm staying home and watching the game I gambled. Happy New Year to all.

  8. You British? It's hard for me to tell which of you guys are non North Americans especially when you are fans of the NFL

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's cold as fuck here

    ReplyDelete
  10. I really enjoyed it when it aired. I haven't watched it since. I love Raw the next night with the, "YOU DESERVE IT!" Chants at Bryan. Great stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am. I try not to make a big deal of it though as I assume no-one cares. My stepdad is American though which counts for something I think.

  12. The read option offense irritates me for irrational reasons. I just don't like cause I just don't like it. Run a real offense

    ReplyDelete
  13. I can respect that irrational anger.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm not a huge fan of it either. But I bet on GA Tech+6. Main reason why is because I don't believe Miss State's heart is in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  15. How in the world are you a fan of the Dolphins of all teams? How did you become a football fan period? I guess being American I'm used to us all being closed-minded to things that didn't originate here so I figure others would be the same way.

What would be an accurate description of Edge's wrestling style?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was thinking the same thing. When I heard the running back announced he was leaving on twitter and didn't bother telling the coaches I said oh hell

    ReplyDelete
  19. Opportunistic, tries to take advantage of mistakes, cheats at will.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree. I found Edge really underrated. He did the Ric Flair formula better than HHH ever did.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That one is my favorite Chamber match. Fantastic match that seems a little forgotten, probably because of the show it took place on.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The NFL has been shown here since the mid 80s, and there's a decent niche fanbase for the sport here. I was introduced to the game in the early 90's by some friends of the family, and they were Dolphins fans, so I am too. They were good back in those days (at least in the regular season).

    ReplyDelete
  23. Man, that Raw was a blast. People were chanting 'Yes!' 15 minutes before the show even started. I don't totally know if it could have come across how thunderous those chants were when Bryan was trying to talk. That and the whole Cena thing - the crowd down low started singing, and the whole arena caught on pretty quickly.

That weekend was one of my favorite of all time. My wife came with me and spent most of her weekend visiting graveyards and museums (she's a sketch/painter as a hobby and way to maintain extra income), and all I did was wrestling. ROH on Friday, Shimmer on Saturday, HOF on Saturday, Mania on Sunday, Raw on Monday, and a ton of copious drinking at every opportunity on Bourbon street. I hope I get to do it again someday, but the first will never be topped.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I never bought him as a main eventer. Just seemed like a guy that got the belt cause it was his turn.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also most English people have the same bemusement at the notion of Americans being big fans of association football.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've owned 3 wrestling shirts in my life. An nWo white. An nWo Wolfpac. And a Rated R Superstar Edge shirt. It was also sort of a knock off Ed Hardy sorta short too and I hate that shit. I just really wanted an Edge shirt and was at a Raw. Had to get it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've heard people say that before. Though, I totally bought him as a champion, plus ratings were higher when he was champion. I thought he got really good heat and people really hated him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. His series of matches with Angle made him as a Main Eventer.

    ReplyDelete
  29. you talking about soccer? It gets big during the World Cup years but that's just because of xenophobia not b/c of any real interest in the sport itself

So, Comic Book Resources has a poll up on Favorite Event of 2014, with Grant Morrison's Multiversity at No. 1, leading Spider-Verse by something like 4 votes.

I've been reading Multiversity, and while I liked it, it's not THAT good. It's typical all-over-the-place Morrison story, which may get pulled together at the end, but until then it's always just a little weird.

I voted for Forever Evil, which is in fourth place.

    ReplyDelete

"According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has made a change to their contracts following CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio’s contentious departures from the company and jump to other organizations. The new stipulation reads that if the talent is fired for disciplinary reasons, they will forfeit all merchandise rights and will be unable to work in either pro wrestling or MMA for one year."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessDecember 31, 2014 at 6:55 PM

I always thought the result was a little disappointing, as I was hoping for someone other than Triple H to win. I was a little burned out on the Game by January 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I never was a huge Edge guy. I stopped watching RAW in 06 when he was champ(not solely because of him but he played a part.

Loved him as part of E&C, liked his singles stuff in 02, but aside from that I wasn't sold on him. I'd enjoy some stuff he did but it was on a case-by-case basis.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think it's similar to the New Generation Era. The fans that stuck around bought but others just simply stopped watching. The ratings went up when he won but not to the levels they were previously so there needs to be a little perspective there

    ReplyDelete
  43. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessDecember 31, 2014 at 6:55 PM

    That comes later.

  49. Summerslam 01 was supposed to be his breakout match and I just couldn't connect to him. The tag team was gold but I've had no interest in anything he's done as a singles guy

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow, referees trying to keep Miss State in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeat that makes sense. I was thinking more of the guys who get up at 6:30 on a saturday morning to watch the premier leage & stuff though. The guy who presented Man v Food used to get murdered on twitter for trying to talk about soccer. He didn't help himself by claiming to be a die hard fan of about 5 different clubs, but there's still that kind of suspicion, which I imagine is the same thing that the average American thinks about English people & the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  52. First Morrison I ever read was his Batman Run. I thought some of it was pretty interesting like Batman & Son and RIP. Some interesting ideas to wrap your head around at least but a lot of the other stuff from that run was shit. Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul and that 3 issue story where Batman's on the island with a bunch of ham-and-Eggers.

Overall his run was interesting and ambitious but there was a lot of crap in there.

  58. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessDecember 31, 2014 at 7:01 PM

He felt so out of place on Batman, which should be a much more grounded character.

There's a lot of Morrison stuff I like, but there are a lot of times he goes overboard with the metatext. And obviously he was going to be a bit out there with Multiversity, but I feel like it's getting a lot of praise because it's Morrison, not because it's actually really good.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Stranger in the AlpsDecember 31, 2014 at 7:01 PM

I read Morrison's Seven Soldiers back in like '04 or '05. What a mess that was.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Meh. He took some chances with the character. I'm kind of sick of the same boring stories where each story opens with batman on a rooftop brooding to himself in the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I normally would have been too but it ended up playing a role in the Batista/Triple H split because Batista wound up making the save and saving Hunter's title yet again and instead of thanks he is forced to hoist Hunter on his shoulders and gets no glory.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I do that, especially if City is playing. I also dig Tottenham.

    ReplyDelete
  63. During the World Cup there appeared to be a whole lot of bandwagoning. Like celebrities showing up to the games and claiming to be lifelong fans so the skepticism is warranted.

I work with two guys that went over seas to watch a Man U game. They haven't mentioned soccer since so I'm a bit skeptical of their actual fandom.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessDecember 31, 2014 at 7:03 PM

I got the whole 7 Soldiers collection for Christmas last year. I trudged through to the fourth book, and I had so much trouble finishing it. I can't even remember if I ever ended up finishing it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just read that Uhaa Nation officially signed (agreed to terms, whatever) with WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That's what I liked about Morrison's Batman run. Sure some of it was shit or in the grand scheme of things wasn't all that good but it did something different. It took the risk of being crap in order to do something interesting which is nice with a character that has been a monthly presence since the 40's.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I am not sure if that is legally enforceable especially with the mma (two seperate type of businesses).

    ReplyDelete
  68. Could be a New Day for him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Especially with the Authority back, Reigns winning the Royal Rumble will just be the icing on the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  70. They got the memo from ESPN. Prescott may be throwing this game

    ReplyDelete
  71. The guy looks like Ahmed Jojnson. He is going to go over so HUGE. First black champ for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  75. so if someone in wwe (say cesaro) is fired and goes into tna sports entertainment, then they would be ok because that is not pro wrestling

    ReplyDelete
  76. Stranger in the AlpsDecember 31, 2014 at 7:06 PM

I just found it confusing to follow all the intertwining plot twists and linking each character to the main story. I believe Morrison does NOT believe that less is more.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Looks like Ahmed but DOESN'T suck. He should do well.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I love when a coach argues about a dubious call (or in this case no-call) when the referees just gave his team a huge break a few plays ago.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hope he doesn't become another Ezekiel Jackson.

    ReplyDelete

    It's just so mean-spirited though.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Cops are out in full force tonight and there are a lot of checkpoints. It's honestly one of the worst nights to drink and drive. These cops rather be at home and are pissed they have to work.

    ReplyDelete
  86. so what is black enough? both parents? 3 grandparents?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Everyone that gets caught deserves it just for being so stupid

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow tomorrow is the day. No caps needed. Famous Jameis proves that he is still *the man*. Diamonds are forever and so are the Seminoles.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Watching Unforgiven '99. I forgot about this, but I'm guessing the "Chaz is a locker-room pariah due to allegations of beating his girlfriend" angle didn't go anywhere. It's usually not a good thing when you're getting storyline ideas from Lockup.

    ReplyDelete
  90. There are so many commercials out there that make white people look so stupid, especially when they're with black people.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Both parents would be a first.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Marcus Mariotta I walked over better men than you to side step a good looking gal on my way to the restroom

    ReplyDelete
  93. Tampa sucked for the Duck.

    ReplyDelete
  94. If I were tampa, I would trade out of the #1 pick and get winston instead because of the florida connection

    ReplyDelete
  95. The only Duck Mariota will be is a lame duck! He can have the HEISMAN, he can be the #1 pick, he can have all the accolades he wants but to be National Champ he has to go through me and brother better men have tried 29 times they've tried and still I stand THE MAN! WOOOOO!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Omer Asik just tipped the ball in on the Spurs' basket to tie the game for them lol

    ReplyDelete
  97. And by the way...Tampa sucks and so does the Duck! Tell em Devin!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Georgia Tech needs to respond here.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Harley Race putting a bounty on Flair was such a great angle. It helps that Flair is insane but it was a great story

    ReplyDelete
  100. That promo Race cut offering the bounty is just aces.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I wish I could have seen more Race in his prime because his promos felt authentic and because of that felt really threatening. They gave off an air of someone who knows how bad he is and doesn't need to shout it.

    ReplyDelete
  102. You people deserve an opportunity to see the best. Let's put two and two together. If I'm the champ and I represent the NCAA then it's just cut and dry that I'm the best. I'm Jameis Winston and I'm the man! WOOOOOOO

So Doug Marone quit. First winning season in 10 years and within 3 days the QB and coach are both gone. Oh, you Bills...

    ReplyDelete
  109. Poor white people...ya'll can't catch a break!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Flair could play the sympathetic babyface with the hinges coming off as well as the cocky heel.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Well, Kyle Orton was far from a long-term answer.

    ReplyDelete
  112. All they need is a qb but with no first round pick this year I'm not sure what they do

    ReplyDelete
  113. Cutler? They wouldn't have been picking high enough to get a good QB anyway at 9-7 though would they.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:32 PM

True, but it's just so them. The bigger concern is the coach, because there's NO ONE out there worth hiring right now.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Rex Ryan and that defense would be rather dangerous, to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Saying I'm the best isn't just a boast! Because we can compare records and awards all day long! Every loss is a failure and Mariota 4 times the scoreboard showed you to be what you are: A loser! But 27 times the best this country has to offer have taken their best shot at the champ and 27 times the scoreboard has proven ME to be what I say I am: The Man! Heisman's, National Championships, any woman I want! So Mariota you learn to like it.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:34 PM

Cutler would be the best option, but we don't even know if he's leaving the Bears, and we have nothing to trade for him.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Bears would have to eat a lot of dead money on the salary cap if they traded him before next season. LIke Larry Fitzgerald with the Cardinals.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Rex Ryan is not going to Buffalo. I'm hoping for a Mike Shanahan/Jay Cutler reunited trainwreck

    ReplyDelete
  120. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:36 PM

He's going to ATL or SF. Jim Haslett is the D.C. I think, might as well promote him.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I thought you were a 9ers fan

    ReplyDelete
  122. Jim Schwartz. Haslett just quit the Skins

    ReplyDelete
  123. I don't see him going to Buffalo. If they threw a lot of money at him, who knows though. They're far from a lost cause.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Just on Sunday I was arguing with someone talking about the Bills going in the right direction. Once in a while I am right.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Buffalo does have an owner who is willing to spend....

    ReplyDelete
  126. Come on, Georgia Tech. Score here and then get the ball at half.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Despite the opt-out, Marrone will collect $4 million from the Bills in 2015, in addition to whatever salary his new team gives him.
    Damn!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:38 PM

I am, but I've lived in Buffalo my whole life. The Niners are fucked too, when Red Ryan is the best coach out there you're in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Just feels weird to see we.

Rex Ryan is a good coach. Bills would be lucky to have him

    ReplyDelete
  130. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:40 PM

That's it. Still might be the best person available.

    ReplyDelete
  131. 411 said the Observer said the plan is still Reigns v. Lesnar. Man, that's gonna go over well. I was at Wrestlemania XX and ECW in the Hammerstein, I need a trilogy of crowd revolt, I guess

    ReplyDelete
  132. It was evident that Bryan isn't in their plans to win, given his timeslot on Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:41 PM

I can't see him not going to SF.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I still think you're reading too much into that. But yea, that's gonna get ugly at the Rumble.

I don't mean in the Philly revolts stuff, which I think is overblown, but just in general.

    ReplyDelete
  135. If I'm Rex Ryan I'd go ATL or broadcasting. The 49ers just fired a successful coach with a fuck you brash personality, why would he want to face the same fate?

    Arthur Blank would love him.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:43 PM

Whoever let that happen needs to get shitcanned.

    ReplyDelete
  137. No Cutler. That guy just has zero interest in playing football. They could get another retread like Fitzpatrick or someone but that's the same as throwing Manuel back out there.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Someone needs to whisper, "Luger... Diesel... Orton..." in Vince's ear a bunch of times.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Buffalo had Dick Jauron for almost four seasons

    ReplyDelete
  140. If he had the 10'o clock hour, I'd feel better about it. It could have been because Raw was rather loaded last week, with Lesnar and the Authority coming back. But if it was someone like Orton in that situation, you know for damn sure he would've gotten a top of the hour slot.

    ReplyDelete
  141. They already had Fitzpatrick. That blew up in their face.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:44 PM

    ReplyDelete
  144. It's so weird that Suh is on his best behavior all year and then right at the end he goes back to his bonehead ways. Guess you can only suppress who you really are for so long.

    ReplyDelete

They didn't fire him, he quit. Though he almost certainly would not have been the coach next year.

    ReplyDelete

So the Twilight Zone marathon on SyFy is now currently running with William Shatner vs. The Furry Fan. Classic episode with classic overacting Shatner.

    ReplyDelete
  149. The only guys that will be available are of that caliber. Fitzpatrick, Keenum, Ponder, Anderson, Derek Carr, aren't they all essentially the same guy?

    ReplyDelete
  150. Let's not play the CM Punk game. The 49ers wanted him out the door.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I bet if he stepped on Tom Brady or Peyton Manning's ankle that he would've been suspended for the rest of the year, if not some games the next year.

    ReplyDelete

No, I mean that crazy clause Marone had in his contract.

That's a list of all the QBs who'll be free agents. It's a pretty demoralising list.

  154. Yea, it's just Buffalo has a history of stupidity at the HC gig

    ReplyDelete
  155. Adam "Colorado" CurryDecember 31, 2014 at 7:49 PM

Isn't Carr the rookie from Oakland?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Michael Bennett complained that Suh being suspended was a clear sign that QB's are favored. There are a ton of signs that the NFL does everything it can to favor QB's. Punishing a player with a history of dirty plays for clearly stepping on a player on the ground is not one of them. Especially considering his suspension was lifted! And Suh received harsher penalty for stomping on an offensive lineman who Bennett said the NFL does not care about.

  157. not him, his brother. I can't think of his name. The dude that played for Houston

  158. Derek Carr? I think you've confused him with someone else.

It always is, anyone good never gets close to free agency.

    ReplyDelete
  160. So was Orton. He'd come out to get sacked for 7 figures. Either way there would be no discernible difference

Yeah, couple years ago I think.

  164. Hoping to watch X-Men: DOFP and Guardians back-to-back, and I have a pizza pre-ordered. Shaping up to be a decent NYE, considering I'm home with a toddler while the wife works.

  165. That's absurd, no matter which way you look at it. Of course a QB is more important than a DT. Losing a DT isn't the end of the world. Losing a QB could turn a great team into a mediocre one.

    ReplyDelete
  166. That's a hell of an itinerary. DOFP and Guardians were both great.

    David I think.

    In football and hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  172. with all the shitty qbs out there, why not take a shot at tebow? It's not like some of these teams could get worse.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I could give you a laundry list of screw job moment that happened to me. Nothing was worse than the Fail Mary.

I read somewhere Chris Duhon said people come up to him all the time to either thank him or tell their sad story because of this

    ReplyDelete
  175. that's what I'm saying. I can see the argument that Tebow sucks, but he is really worse than the crap that gets throwed out there every week?

    ReplyDelete
  176. If you want to die, bet basketball. The foul game is brutal, and it doesn't seem like it ever favors a bettor.

  177. I've been preaching this for a while. I know the guy has some problems in a conventional offense, but when the Patriots ran a spread-type package in the preseason he did quite well. The guy isn't going to be the next Montana, but I think he could help a team win more than some of these other free agent retreads. In my opinion, the damn Cardinals needed to give him a call (but I'm not sure if he's in shape) instead of running their third stringer out there this weekend.

Sure they can, just sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  182. You'd think a blue collar town like Cleveland or Buffalo might like someone like Tebow too.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Airens probably doesn't want him because Tebow doesn't fit in the vertical passing game; he's way too inaccurate. But he's still better than what they have.

I can assure you Buffalo would not. We only like QBs that have talent.

    ReplyDelete
  186. LOL. The last time Buffalo had a talented QB was Doug Flutie.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Yeah, I can get that. The problem is that if you sign Tebow you are going to have to redo your entire offense for him and many teams are just not willing to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  188. I don't see GT winning this game now. Hopefully, they just cover the +6.
