CM Punk Signs With UFC

Source

Yes seriously.  He'll likely debut in 2015.

Comments

  1. This will be the biggest buyrate and shortest fight in UFC history.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yep.

    Seriously, LOL.

    He's gonna get DESTROYED.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Why do I have a sinking feeling that this will not end well?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Shame. I was really hoping he'd follow through on his podcast comment and work with the Young Bucks.

    ReplyDelete
  5. If Lawler can do UFC at his age, why not CM Punk?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think he'll last longer than the 33 seconds of the last fight I just watched.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Good for him. I wish him well. And we already know what his entrance music will be.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Robbie Lawler?

He's four years younger than Punk and his first professional fight was in 2001.

Because he looks nothing like a UFC fighter?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Because he's probably going to get his ass kicked.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, I mean, what?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Here I attempted to use the name similarities with a WWE near septuagenarian to make a light joke.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 8:50 PM

In that case, his opponent should come out to Mark Henry's theme.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I honestly wonder if he'll do Cult of Personality or go back to doing Miseria Cantare.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd mark out for this:

  16. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 8:51 PM

He should swerve us and come out to "This Fire Burns"

    ReplyDelete
  17. The dude has never fought before, is a white belt and has two bum knees on top of who the fuck knows how many other injuries that never healed properly.

He'll probably pass a physical, but he's gonna get his ass handed to him.

    ReplyDelete

    Like your way of thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  19. CM Punk saying he might be a welterweight. What weight class would Rey Mysterio be if he joined?

    ReplyDelete
  20. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 8:53 PM

Am I the only one who finds this ironic that he's going into a UFC ring after all those years he's tried to get annoying fans in the ring to fight him?

    ReplyDelete
  21. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 8:54 PM

If Rey's knees don't work, he may have to go to an even lower class.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Punk will become the fourth man to compete in UFC *and* wrestle The Rock at a WWE PPV, following Brock Lesnar, Ken Shamrock, and Dan Severn.

There's your odd stat of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  23. CM Punk will fight on a UFC PPV in 2015, while Ben Askren keeps fighting somewhere over in Asia. I know there's a WCW circa 1998 joke in there somewhere...

    ReplyDelete
  24. CM Punk 1978-2015

    ReplyDelete
  25. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 8:57 PM

WWE should hire whoever beats Punk so that they can have some insurance policy for the writers when guys don't what to work with their scripts.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dana's no fool. He's going to feed him a total meatball.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Huge signing but let's face facts: MMA fans look down on wrestlers and Punk will have to work 5 times as much to impress them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. But won't said "meatball" feel the same way? That he's getting fed a guy with no experience. It could put the meatball guy in the map.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fucking crazy. I hope they line up a couple tomato cans for him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. F'N Body Slams - Dan SelbyDecember 6, 2014 at 9:02 PM

Shiiiit. I think this is the moment where I start watching. And rumours of Brock coming back at some point? Holy fucking shit. Would that even be allowed? Or are they a different division?

    I know nothing, clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Such a brilliant move. Guarantee you his first fight makes a ton of money.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So Dana White got an expensive dig in at McMahon and we all get to see CM Punk get his ass whipped. Sounds like a good deal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If your goal in MMA is impressing dudes in Afliction shirts, you're doing it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Might be good for his ego.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think my favorite part of all of this is how pissed WWE is.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have no idea how UFC TV works...but I hope Dana lets Punk cut tons and tons of promos/interviews before his fight. That will be entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Way to generalize.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, Punk played the last 2 weeks pretty well. His podcast with Colt and the WWE podcast with Austin/McMahon have garnered him a lot of attention...now he announces this.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I want Brock/Punk in the octagon.

And I want it to be the biggest buy-rate in UFC history

    ReplyDelete
  40. What if Punk's fight isn't the main event?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Brooks and Lesnar could be the Hall and Nash of 2015, jumping ship and hurting WWE. Only if Chael Sonnen is "the third man"

    ReplyDelete
  42. UFC has weight classes and those two would be worlds apart in weight.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Does he have to fight as Phil Brooks now. He might throw a hissy fit.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Exactly. That meat ball is gonna Bart Gunn CM Punk's Dr. Death.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It'll probably be the co-main. Dana already said he won't throw Punk into the fire and he'll fight a guy who only has 1-2 fights.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sneak Peak! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAUY1J8KizU

    ReplyDelete
  47. well, considering he calls himself Phil Brooks on Talking Dead and was referred to as Brooks on the show tonight, I'd say no....

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't think Punk is going to be in this for the long haul, even if he turns out to be a good fighter. My guess is he wants to follow the Brock career path.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Maybe Punk will have to go through The Ultimate Fighter. That would actually be a good investment.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 9:13 PM

WWE can't top it can they?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Was Batista's fight a setup?

    ReplyDelete
  52. You mean make money for UFC so he can come back and make a ton of money from Vince while working six dates a year?

    Makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Be careful what you wish for.

We might be looking at the return of AL SHARPTON to Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  54. He has the Punk name. He used it before he was in WWE

    ReplyDelete
  55. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 9:14 PM

I may actually watch Ultimate Fighter just to see if Punk would have a fit at the house.

    ReplyDelete
  56. No, you put Punk on PPV

    ReplyDelete
  57. Seriously. It took 10 days for Punk to leapfrog John Cena in actual mainstream cultural relevance.

    ReplyDelete
  58. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 9:15 PM

But then we put him on Ultimate Fighter later.

    ReplyDelete
  59. With who?

Sting? Hell Austin turns 50 this month. They have no one else.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Maybe so, but nobody ever made a career out of beating cans.

Unless this is just a "I'm doing this because Vince said I can't" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  61. He will fight bums. This is just a desperation move by Dana.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©December 6, 2014 at 9:16 PM

I think it's time they rehash the old who killed Vince angle again.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah, total tomato can.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Punk just made Brock Lesnar a lot of money

    ReplyDelete
  65. CM PUNK! CM PUNK! CM PUNK!

    ReplyDelete
  66. They put him in there with a chump that he could look good in beating?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think lots of people would watch Punk acting all indignant about having to train with a bunch of rookies and not being put into a UFC Main Event right away.

    ReplyDelete
  68. A lot of people will pay to see CM Punk get killed. Why would you give this away for free?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Because now Vince is going to throw a lot of money at Brock to get him to stay? No, I don't think so. Brock is going no matter what, and even if they could get Brock to stay that would just be throwing good money out after bad (or however thta saying goes).

    ReplyDelete
  70. Do you think Vince wants two of his top stars going to UFC? Brock knows this too and can have fun raising his pay.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The Brock Path is dependent on him being at least somewhat capable in the cage.

    ReplyDelete
  72. This is why I love Dana White. No, UFC isn't nearly as hot as it was just a few short years ago but it's still drawing well enough and Dana goes out and signs a guy who is all but guaranteed to draw at least one huge buyrate. Yes, they'll put him in there with a bum but nobody will really care because it's a spectacle and White really seems to get that. You have to put on cards that people want to see and having Punk on the roster will do that at least once.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Phil "Skinny Fat" Brooks.

    ReplyDelete
  74. But this isn't pro wrestling. It's not about "impressing" people...it's a legit competition and at his age and with his lack of experience Punk will get destroyed by any legit contenders in the UFC.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Why would Brock fight for real 3 times a year and possibly get his ass kicked, when he can pretend to fight 3 times a year and have little risk of injury?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Punk hasn't even trumped Cena in Google Trends.

    ReplyDelete
  77. They should book CM Punk like they booked James Toney. Immediately put him in a PPV fight against a very top name. He will get his ass kicked and probably disappear, but draw a huge buyrate for that one PPV. Thats probably the only use I can think for him. If they think a guy in his late 30s who is badly injured with no MMA experience is a long term prospect, they are insane.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I do wonder if this is just a "I'm doing this because Vince said I can't" thing. Seems right up his alley.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I don't really know how much of a boost beating an untrained 36 year old will give a dude, but a win is a win.

    ReplyDelete
  80. F'N Body Slams - Dan SelbyDecember 6, 2014 at 9:40 PM

haha Ok, ok. I've never really watch in my life, mate, tbh. And i'm critically intoxicated. Just the thought of a 5 star rematch, but legit, was pretty intriguing.

    Still, this will be fun!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Knowing nothing about MMA, does Punk have anything going for him besides being good at faking fights?

    ReplyDelete
  82. F'N Body Slams - Dan SelbyDecember 6, 2014 at 9:42 PM

Cheers anyway, though, fellas! Just had a great reunion with some of my old school backyard wrestling mates. Had a big nostalgic sesh watching loads of old compilation videos (I seem to remember actually posting a match from a few years back on here, and actually not getting totally killed for it, so that's something).

And now just watching a compilation video of me and one of my best buds taking a random trip to WM in Miami a few years back. It's here if you fancy it - i'm the dick with the shortish dark hair. It covers our whole stay in a music video set to Will Smith's classic hit 'Miami', of course:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8mojcV9qio&index=121&list=UUkPsCWFFPv_zADGACQWPwOw

    ReplyDelete
  83. Not really. He's sparred and rolled enough to get a white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but that is literally the lowest ranking belt you can earn.

Could he kick my ass? Sure.

Can he be a competitive fighter? Well, he's sparred, but he's also a 36 year old man with two bum knees, who-knows-how-many other injuries that never healed properly and has never been in professional fight shape in his life.

    He's gonna get destroyed.

    ReplyDelete
  84. He's friends with Dana and he'll be matched up very carefully. But even then who knows how good he'll be. There's a big difference between training with the Gracie's for fun and fighting a professional fighter.

    ReplyDelete
  85. No state athletic commission would ever clear a match between a guy with no previous professional fighting experience and a top-tier UFC star. Punk is gonna be fighting tomato cans for his entire UFC run.

    ReplyDelete
  86. He's going to get annihilated. Everyone wanted to make an example of Brock Lesnar when he arrived, but (up until his last fight) they really couldn't because, well, he's Brock Lesnar. Punk is much more breakable, and unless Dana White puts him up against a bunch of tomato cans (which he sort of already said he was going to do), the first well trained veteran fighter he faces is going to make him look stupid and probably severely injure him.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Crikey Mate Down Under AussieDecember 6, 2014 at 9:53 PM

I think Punk will do fine, he'll fight a nobody like Batista did, get a sloppy win, check it off his bucket list, and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Great, cant wait to hear Punk bitching that he didnt get to main event in UFC...

    ReplyDelete
  89. Punk vs. Dr. Amman! Book it!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Its all a swerve, HHH and Dana White are in cahoots!

    ReplyDelete
  91. He said in the podcast interview he owns the name outright. He used his real name on Talking Dead two appearances ago because he was unsure if he even wanted to be called Punk anymore. His last Talking Dead appearance he was billed as CM Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think Lesnar is doing quit well money wise.

    ReplyDelete
  93. F'N Body Slams - Dan SelbyDecember 6, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Right, i'll take this over to the trusty BoD'ers to help a brother out here.

As I mentioned somewhere below, had a MUCH needed catch-up with some old school backyard wrestling friends (split up properly with the girlfriend recently, and just moved in to a new place on my own, so a fair bit of change).

    Got on it.

    So, it's 5.30am. I don't have work til 1.45pm on Monday. Do I:

    a) Do another line and finish this shit off and carry on chatting away to randoms on Facebook who I haven't spoke to in ages
    b) Have a spliff and start thinking about bed
    c) Stop doing this shit and just go to bed, you fucked up arsehole?

    Cheers, all.

    ReplyDelete
  94. We have an evening thread

    ReplyDelete
  95. F'N Body Slams - Dan SelbyDecember 6, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Oh, do we? Honestly, I didn't even see mate. Bah, whatever - I'll finish up this line and get rid of this shit, and probably smoke a joint and go to bed.

    Basically a, b, and c.

Goodnight all, have a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I still get chills when I hear this song because I just think of MITB '11 and the crowd going ballistic. And I really wish WWE could edit out "The Nexus" out of Punk's graphic because that really, really bothers me when I go back to watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It was a huge enough stretch that James Toney (in his first MMA bout!) was cleared to fight Randy freakin' Couture. Punk will only get cleared if he's facing some other Ultimate Fighter-level rookie.

    ReplyDelete
  98. not to mention several (who knows how many) concussions in his recent history. It's honestly not a very safe or smart idea for Punk, but I'm sure the money is fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm sure many people will be interested in the spectacle, but this generates zero buys from me. I'm sure it will bump buy rates for UFC a bunch though

    ReplyDelete
  100. CruelConnectionNumber2December 7, 2014 at 12:31 AM

I could tap Punk in less than a minute based off his lack of experience and my collegiate wrestling background. I don't think I could take any trained UFC fighters and they'd embarrass me. Thus, I'm not excited to see some untrained celebrity throw down with a setup loser (aka Dave BRASS BODY Batista's forgotten MMA joke of a setup fight). This is a joke. Make that money but who cares

    ReplyDelete
  101. CruelConnectionNumber2December 7, 2014 at 12:36 AM

Brock is a UFC guy doing a couple WWE dates. Don't get it confused.

    ReplyDelete
  102. CruelConnectionNumber2December 7, 2014 at 12:37 AM

Yes. It was a replacement for a replacement. Basically a guy from a back alley.

    ReplyDelete
  103. CruelConnectionNumber2December 7, 2014 at 12:38 AM

    Hasn't made one dollar.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Agreed. Lesnar was a freak and a force of nature - I've never seen anyone as big as him who could move as fast as he could. Add that to his amateur background and he was always going to be a contender.

I'd say Dolph Ziggler would have a better chance of success in UFC than CM Punk. I might get flamed for that, but there you are.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Why not just combine everything and put Lesnar v Punk as a UFC-sponsored shoot fight main event at WM?

Then everyone wins! (Especially HHH :p)

    ReplyDelete
  106. UFC's not competition. It's barbaric!

    ReplyDelete
  107. This is a place where Punk's attitude could shine. The dude is a major prick, with a big sense of entitlement and a chip on his shoulder. (Dude held the longest title reign in ages but still feels screwed? Fuck him.) But these are perfect traits for a fighter, keeps him hungry. Looking forward to it...win or lose.

    ReplyDelete
  108. They can always bring Nash back to restore the company back to it's 1995 glory days again.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I believe it's a reference to old time gunslingers picking cans off a wooden fence for target practice, though I could be mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  110. It will definitely generate 1 buy from me, so we cancel each other out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. They have women fighting now. Or as I like to call it foxy boxy.

    ReplyDelete
  112. fair enough, sir
