Savage/Perfect

Watching Survivor Series 92 for the first time ever, and in a pre-match interview Savage tells Perfect that they've never wrestled each other.  They seemed to be heels/faces at the same time in WWF, and then both were NWO in WCW.  So did Savage and Hennig ever have a match?   Seems like a heel Perfect vs. face Savage would've been a classic, but the timing never was right for a feud

Yeah, I really can't recall a time when they met.  Both were heels when Savage was still active in early 91 so there's no potential for crossover there.  I don't recall them ever meeting in WCW, either.  And yeah, it would have been a hell of a match.

  1. Curt was too perfect a friend for Randy to wrestle, I guess.

  3. Maybe he was in a tag match against the mega powers? Not sure

  4. It's weird that during a time when WWF was doing bad business for the most part that they couldn't milk these type of dream matches.

  5. RIP to Savage, Hennig, Elizabeth and Randy Anderson.. damn

  6. Savage was SO OVER during this period, and barely ever got a real shot. It's insane to watch old PPVs and see the crowd reaction, even during 1992-3.

  7. Wow, not really a hell of a match at all. Kind of disappointing to see where both were at @ this point.

  8. Savage was always going through the motions and only put in effort if he was in a high profile match with a guy that could help carry him and Hennig was a shell of his former self at this point so the match is what you'd expect.

  9. at the time I was hoping Savage would win the 93 Rumble for Bret/Savage at Mania... or for Perfect winning with Bret/Perfect at Mania

  10. Perfect was kind of a jerk for bailing on Flair

  11. As a huge Flair fan as a kid, I never forgave him.

  12. What I liked about WCW 97/98 was that no matter how bad or non existent the stories were, they had such a big roster, that even the 3 hours of nitro flew by quickly, because they had so many interesting matches.

  13. TJ: Saw the Reigns match on Smackdown. Not only is he way, way off being ready in the ring, his ring gear is worse than it was before.

  14. Bash at the Beach 97, too. Not sure if they actually had contact since he bailed on DDP in the match.

  15. Timothy Byrne. For over 30 years, the destroyer of little boys dream matches.

  16. As beloved as Savage is his WCW run was putrid outside of a handful of Flair matches and the DDP series. He always still the coolest guy in the room though.

  17. Perfect was at his best when he was in with a bigger guy that he could bump like a lunatic for.

  18. I like to imagine 2008 Undertaker vs. a prime Mr. Perfect. Amazing.

I don't know, it's hard to say. Because really Perfect-Hart was excellent, and Nick Bockwinkel wasn't über-huge. I may be in the minority on this as well, but I thought Perfect-Santana was a Hell of a deal for the Intercontinental Championship in 1990.

Here's the logic that I don't understand. The only two guys the WWE had that could be made into top faces was Ambrose and Reigns (this is the WWE's mindset, since otherwise Ziggler would have a chance). Ambrose is farther along than Reigns in almost all measurable ways, but Reigns has 'the look', so he gets the monster push and Ambrose is cooled off a bit.

In a perfect world, why not take the guy who's more ready and run with him this year, season Reigns more and go with him next year and make TWO new top stars? As is, Ambrose is looking like a ditz, and poor Roman is being booked ass-backwards by Creative. There's a risk they screw up BOTH guys long term.

  21. Ambrose can get the push he wants anytime he wants. He just needs to grab Vince's grass rings.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Um, he main evented the last ppv.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What you laid out is exactly the problem. Sometimes it seems they get stuck in what they think a main event guy should be and don't look at the overall picture; fan support, promo ability, in ring ability, etc. So long as they fit what WWE wants its fine.

That's not to say Reigns isn't over because he definitely gets fan support. But the variables that surround Reigns aren't there for guys like Ambrose and Ziggler. Ambrose has been a part of main event singles feud for half a year and has been forced to carry the load in two main event, long matches that he brought the goods in(I thought his HIAC with Rollins and Wyatt TLC were both really good booking aside) and Ziggler has time and again shined whenever thrust into that spot.

Reigns hasn't yet and I worry they are ignoring guys that could be huge because they already have their mind set on Roman. Which could end up damaging him too because they could rush him before he's ready and do damage.

  24. Luger main evented a ton of shows, but he couldn't shake the choker label he earned his entire career due to bad booking. That's a point I disagreed with Punk on....going on last ISN'T always everything.

  25. Reigns gives both Vince and Trips a boner, therefore he is chosen. That's literally, entirely all it is.

I'm not saying he's been buried, just not booked as well. Ambrose hasn't won a feud, let alone major match since the summer. He was sowing the seeds to start really catching fire in early October... Then he became Gallagher Lite, and now he's kind of a goof.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ambrose's two main event appearances(at least to me) actually felt like the main event of the show and were legitimate choices. It's just a shame that both times those main event appearances were capped off with funky endings.

    ReplyDelete
  28. God knows why. He's like 0-5. He must be sleeping with the booker or something.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would not have minded him losing clean to Wyatt to Sister Abigail at TLC 1-2-3 clean in the ring. Or via cheating from Wyatt. A low blow or something. It's just the weird TV exploding thing continuing a trend in Ambrose PPV matches where there is some shenanigans at play.

Sometimes shenanigans can help things but the guy needs a clean finish to one PPV match.

I think the thing that handicaps Ambrose is the era in which he's in. You can only be so "wild" in the PG era, and after you can only stray into what we see now. I think Dean would be much more effective if he could push the bar a bit, but it's just not possible.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You know it's predetermined?

    ReplyDelete
  32. He's what Austin would be if he came around today. Austin was just allowed to go farther with his gaga and antics. I still think he could be extremely effective as a wildcard character(in fact call him Wildcard Dean Ambrose. Much better than Lunatic Fringe) it just comes down to execution.

  34. I think Hennig is highly overrated.

Well, it would help if Creative were more creative, so to speak. Oddly enough, the only person (aside from Cena) who has really been handled well over the past month is Dolph Ziggler. It may be antithetical to their plans, but building up suspense between Ambrose, Reigns and Ziggler for the Rumble victory would at least spice things up a bit.

You have a right to your opinion, of course. Could you extrapolate a bit more though?

    ReplyDelete
  37. People try to put him in the upper tier of workers, but besides his PPV matches with Bret Hart, I'm not sure I can think of one great Hennig match.

    ReplyDelete
  38. His stuff with Bockwinkel. Also, his match with Tito on SNME very good as well as his Raw match with Flair, which was over 20 minutes and excellent.

I think that he was a bust as a main event draw went, though I don't know enough about his AWA run to qualify that statement. I dunno, I've always liked the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I didn't dislike him, just never bought him as anything but IC material.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Never liked the AWA. Haven't seen the Tito match since it aired. Gonna have to watch it again. The Flair match was good. Never bought him as a main eventer.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Was that on him though? Or the booking of him in big matches.

I love that Tito match so much, definitely check it out. Shockingly good fro a 1990 WWF TV match.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I posted this in anothe thread, his gear is awful.

    ReplyDelete
  44. They definitely were legit, although the TLC match really should have anchored the show in the middle. Drama and overbooking burn out the crowd more than crazy violence, so Cena/Rollins should have gone last.

  46. Actually you're right. That Tito match was good, and I've heard nothing but raves about the loser leaves town match with Flair, although that's one that I've managed to never see.

  47. And with tears in his eyes, Hennig acknowledged that Bret gave him the best matches in his career.
