Steen/Generico

This whole Steen/Generico angle from last night makes no sense at all from whatever way you look at it.  If you look at it ignoring all non-wwe stuff, some random new guy just attacked the guy that won the title.  They have no history that you've seen whatsoever.  If you look at it acknowledging their ROH history, its two guys that had an absolute blood feud for 2 years and the last time you saw them hated each other.  Then they reunite for like a minute and Steen turns again?  I guess?  If you look at it as, everybody knows that they're really friends behind the scene, and all of those hellacious matches are just pro wrestling angles, then who cares about this angle because it also is just a wrestling angle and they're friends behind the scenes.  It makes no sense.

It makes tons of sense.  They specifically told the story of how:

a)  Owens and Zayn were good friends from before.
b)  Owens had to watch while all his friends made it into WWE before him
c)  His best friend Zayn won the NXT title at the show he was debuting at.

Connect the dots and BAM, motivation for why he'd turn on his best friend out of jealousy.  He kills two birds with one stone, elevating himself to a title shot immediately and getting revenge on the person who "made it" while he couldn't. You can rag on a lot of storylines in WWE, but this one is pretty airtight and well explained by the announcers to boot.

  1. um, it's going to be an awesome feud with great matches.

    Stop bitching IWC!

  3. Typical smarky moron sending this e-mail. Even thinking he's inside with the "Steen/Generico" usage. SMH.

If you didn't like that angle last night, you're not a fucking wrestling fan. End of story, there is no argument. Sorry.

  5. "If you look at it ignoring all non-wwe stuff, some random new guy just attacked the guy that won the title."

And... what's wrong with that? Guy makes debut, sees an opportunity to make an immediate impact--immediately become a challenger for the title. It's actually the smartest debut strategy in years.

  6. Can you out the people who write these emails? It's nice to know who the idiots are

  7. There are still people who call Daniel Bryan "Danielson." These people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

  8. I wish I had more hands

So I could give this email four middle fingers

  9. Chances are that's something they don't have to worry about as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  11. In all fairness, his real last name is "Danielson" and he used it for years. I slip and call him "Danielson" by accident all the time. I'm not trying to be insider-y, it's just too close to his real name.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Seriously, this angle makes 10x more sense than anything else on WWE television this year. If you're upset about this angle being nonsensical in some way, then I don't see how you enjoy watching wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Contrarians gonna contrary. Or something. Have we sunk so low that we now ignore all the dumbass shit and find faults with the things they do well?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with Lord Almighty Scott here 100%. The angle made perfect sense and is one of the best/most logical things WWE has done in ages. Not only do they recognize a feud from another organization, but they continue the storyline, and while doing so, elevate an internet darling to the number two slot in NXT. Whoever booked this/scripted this needs to be promoted to the main show pronto.

  23. Did he ever explain what he meant by "peanut butter pie"?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dusty is the booker? I thought he just ran acting classes for the NXT guys once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It makes sense, and they told the story, and Zayn's facial reactions towards Owens were great the entire show hinting at it... and I know they probably have to rush this feud now in order to do this in NXT...

Still not crazy about throwing a debut guy like that as the top heel immediately. Especially one like Owens, he needs some build for people not aware of his history, which is still probably most of the NXT audience.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You know what I'd do, if I were in charge? I'd book another NXT Special for early February after the Rumble, and have Owens beat Zayn for the NXT Title, then book the rematch at WrestleMania, ladder match for the NXT Title on the big show. Take that, email scum!

No, if he did, I'm sure we'd see something about Otters, Roger Ebert, or DDP Yoga.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You know what helped him out tremendously? For the first time, they introduce a bruiser that actually looks like he could kill people. Ryback's offense was the shits during his Goldberg run, and I think it hurt him in the long run. Rusev sells like a babyface more than he looks like a monster heel, though I think he's got more potential than Ryback.

Kevin Owens came in, got his nose broken hardway, then said FUCK YOU and MurderDeathKill'd poor CJ Parker with two insane and cool-looking moves. He's a star in the making for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Steen, fine -- the guy just debuted. But unless you're talking about him under the mask, calling Zayn "Generico" is stupid.

And the idiot doesn't realized that they feuded for FOUR years in the indies, between the time Steen kicked him in the balls in ROH to Generico's final match in PWG. They were "friends" after Generico's last PWG match ("If there was no El Generico, there'd be no Kevin Steen") -- so he's not even a "good" smark.

Plus, as Scott said, the vignettes set up the feud perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He had been doing some booking, and this feels like a Dusty angle. Maybe Byron Saxton is really good.

  37. The one little tiny thing that I wanted to see would've been Owens give a look to the title before walking back up the ramp. Loved it otherwise.

  43. Virgil's Gimmick TableDecember 12, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Monsters are supposed to have immediate, shocking impact. Here's an example: Watch the original Halloween. Michael Myers gets a short prologue about his past where it shows him already being a vicious monster, then the whole movie is just him going on a rampage without any rhyme or reason that we know of. So we want to see more. They made an entire franchise off of it, (not that the sequels were great, but they were made off the success of the first.l

The Rob Zombie remake, on the other hand, was all about his past and motivations and it makes him borderline sympathetic. It sucked. Then the sequel was even worse because there was nowhere to go. They told the whole story in that one movie.

Same logic applies here. Owens got a short prologue about his character, a taste of his viciousness in the opening match, and then was revealed as a true monster by betraying his best friend at the end. Now everyone is talking about him and everyone wants to see more because he shocked everyone right away.

No babeh, that'th fuh thomebody elth.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm guessing that isn't his motivation. His motivation is being pissed for being "left behind" by his friends.

My best guess is that first, he'll go through all of the "friends" he mentioned in his vignette -- Neville specifically (since he can't go through Bryan) before getting back to Zayn.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yep, he alluded to Zayn in his NXT promos before debuting, plus there's a video of William Regal after the PPV expressing his disappointment having brought Owens in only for him to do this. Makes so much it hurts!

I have Goro on speed dial... But wait, his middle finger and his index are the same finger. This is a quandary...

    ReplyDelete
  48. The real problem is he's a fat guy that wrestles in a shirt. Why not just bring in Balls Mahoney?

    ReplyDelete
  49. All I know is that I'm still buzzing from the whole show last night. Topped and tailed perfectly with the Owens debut and turn.

The angle is giving the audience some credit, but more than that it's intriguing; maybe the NXT audience doesn't know much about their past... yet. But they will. Isn't that the point, to get people wanting to know what happens next?

  57. There was also that great moment in the locker room where Zayn was sitting on the bench, and it looked like just a quiet moment of him getting ready for the title match, and then the camera swung around and Owens was just sitting there staring at him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Let the audience at large figure it out when they see the "smart" fans responding the way they do. It's a good formula.

  60. Agreed. That was tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I call him Danielson if I'm talking about his ring of honor career.

As for Steen, it's an adjustment, he's been Kevin Steen to me for years--it's not smarty bullshit, it's the fact that my favourite wrestling memory was being ringside when Steen won the title. When I see him I think "Kevin Steen"

His name is Owens now, I get that, I think of it as the Owens--Zayne feud, but people who renember these guys but different ring names shouldn't bReed?

People like you who take this shit way to seriously are a much bigger concern to the gene pool.

I love how the interview with Owens was announced before the turn for next week. Now the interview will be him just explaining why he did what he did.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Only think I know about their history is what they showed leading up to the match and I thought he came across as a huge star. I've never seen Steen before he signed with NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It was Jesse Baker.

    ReplyDelete
  74. think author of this email is still an ok dude...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Months and months and months of The Authority and The Bella Twins, and THIS is the storyline that doesn't make sense???

    ReplyDelete
  76. Some fun fantasy booking. Assuming a Zayn/Neville rematch, does Owens interfere to cost him the title OR help him retain so OWENS can be the one to crush Zayns dreams?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Even if you ignore their history, the idea of a newly debuted guy gunning right for the champ and making an immediate impact makes more sense than anything else this company books these days

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yep, they made it clear that Steen and Zayn were friends b/f hand (w/ out making it TOO clear as to not make it obvious that the turn was coming) and that it was hard for Steen to see his friends make it to WWE b/f him. I know Generico/Steen had a blood feud in ROH, but we see that sort of thing all the time (Razor Ramon and Diesel had feuded in WWF but still debuted in WCW as The Outsiders). Also, didn't they have a storyline reconciliation in ROH anyway? Regardless, it's awesome old school booking, Can you imagine the current WWE making a guy a major player and world title contender on his very 1st night w/ the company? I mean, if you want fans to know a guy is a star, this is how you do it, as opposed to feeling the need to "humble" a wrestler and then incorrectly thinking you can just re-heat them later (we'll call that microwave booking).

    ReplyDelete
  79. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighDecember 12, 2014 at 7:32 PM

    That was awesome

    ReplyDelete
  80. I really like the phrase 'microwave booking' ...

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think the last time WWE made a guy a major player on his first night was Foley. Debuted in a squash match, then ended the show by beating the living hell out of Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Ha Punk! What a fucking mark!

    ReplyDelete
  83. "I feel like the worst father in the world."

    Ooh, NICE. Damn.

Why? Why can't we have more promos like this? I would be all over the product on a regular, weekly basis if we saw even a shred of of this.

    ReplyDelete
  84. one could argue for Carlito, who debuted by winning the US title and Jericho's promo battle with Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Did this guy just say they have no history and then detail their history?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Because Vince wants talking points, sound bites and desperation.

    ReplyDelete
  87. WWMMD? No matter what else Macho did after debuting in the WWF he always let it be known that Hogan, and the WWF Title were his ultimate goal. That's how you debut a heel.
