Title chain: lesnar-> cena-> Rollins-> reigns

Hi Scott -
Longtime reader, bla bla. There seems to be a groundswell lately - and rightly so - to just get the belt off lesnar at the rumble and have cena put RR over at mania.  That's fine, but doesn't this make even more sense: cena beats Brock in a war, Rollins finally cashes and either with Brock's help, or because cena is so worn down, takes it from cena. Now you have a ready-made feud from the shield breakup (why would cena have an issue with RR in storyline terms?), and we get the face going over the cowardly heel and taking revenge for the "sellout" at mania. Too logical?

I just feel like Reigns winning the belt from Rollins doesn't do anything for him.  Lesnar is at least a top level star, as is Cena, and either one of those can kickstart the push.  Changing the title three times in a two month span is counterproductive as well.

Really, the best thing would have been not putting the belt on Lesnar in the first place and letting Rollins cash in on Cena at Summerslam so that he could have been champion during this whole terrible dead zone from Sep-Jan.  Lesnar could have destroyed Cena but decked the ref to get DQ'd, Rollins pins the corpse of Cena to win the title, faces chase him from now until Rumble when Cena gets his title back.

  1. Whatever. Let Brock kill whoever gets in his path. Ragdoll Cena, brush of the code breaker like its nothing. Come and go when you please.

    Too logical?

    Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Told you guys Brock holding the title through this dead zone was bad idea.

My guess is that Reigns wins the title, and Rollins uses the briefcase then with the weakest possible Wile E Coyote stealing of the belt for a while, then Reigns kills him and it's finally back to the midcard.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm not so sure Rollins is gonna win the belt just because he has the briefcase. He doesn't have the authority behind him. Those two security dorks aren't enough to overcome Cena or Brock. I dunno, I think Rollins would make a weak-ass heel champion.

    ReplyDelete
  5. In retrospect, putting the belt on Brock was probably a bad move; if he had shown up more often and had beaten one or two other challengers (Orton, Sheamus), then it would have been fine, but this use of him and the title has been awful.

That said, what's done is done, and I totally disagree with those that say he should lose the title before WM. If you do that, then the last year becomes even MORE pointless: even with the poor booking as of late, he's still the guy that ended the Streak and steamrolled Cena, that's a LOT of rub to give Reigns. If Cena wins the belt back at "Rumble", then everything they've tried to do with Brock is moot. Do we really need CENA to be the guy that ends Brock's dominance?

Sure, I understand where people are coming from, but at least Brock's reign is somewhat salvageable, and he makes a great opponent for the new "star" that they're trying to put over. Cena and Rollins will still be there after WM, so why rush it? Rollins doesn't have to cash-in until June, making him the perfect post-WM opponent, and you can do Cena/Reigns at "Summerslam" or "WM32".

For once, let's just not bother with convoluted booking and hot-potato'ing the title.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Again, whenever you do that lol thing, all I see is a guy throwing his hands up in the air in exhaustion/disbelief.

    ReplyDelete
  7. If we're pitching ideas, here's mine:

    * Royal Rumble- Cena vs. Lesnar, part V. Cena and Lesnar have a long battle that has Cena pin Lesnar, but Cena is barely able to stand. Here comes Rollins, who cashes in his MitB briefcase.
Cena’s dead on his feet, Rollins looks to win- and Brock Lesnar, angry at losing his title, snaps and attacks Cena… costing Rollins his MitB shot as Cena wins by DQ. Heyman has to separate Rollins and Lesnar
    * Also at the Royal Rumble- Reigns wins the Royal Rumble
    * The February PPV is Cena & Reigns against Rollins & Lesnar. Which ends when Cena and Reigns miscommunicate, allowing Rollins to pin Reigns
    * Wrestlemania: The Main is Cena vs. Reigns- and Reigns takes the title
    * Wrestlemania: The secondary match is Lesnar vs. Rollins- and here Rollins when when Heyman chooses Rollins, helping Rollins win and sending Lesnar from the WWE.

Now we have a new champion (Reigns) and a built in feud for him (Rollins). Use Lesnar to elevate Rollins

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hey there fella! I projected TWO turns in there!

    ReplyDelete
  9. No denying that this booking decision 18 years ago irreparably harmed WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So they did add the 1-8 -96 Raw, but not the 1-1-96, and then after the 3-11-96 it skips 3 episodes into April.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Many have been in Chyna.

  12. Your favorite wrestlers must have been the Godwinns and Duke The Dumpster Droese.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why not? He is a contender based on status. I think it is absurd that we think nobody can ever lose.

There is way too much jobbing and 50/50 today, but then? The IC Champ losing to the World Champion, especially a strong one like Bret Hart, doesn't really hurt him at all.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah I remember watching this live and I loved how Monsoon didn't give a fuck and got up in Vader's face. And to me, Vader fucking up the gorilla was crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Vince did a great job putting over the Vader/Monsoon angle. "That's Gorilla Monsoon! I've known him my whole life!"

How anybody was on Team HBK back then is beyond me. I was Team Bret.

  16. Owen Hart and Chris Jericho!!!

  17. If Big Show could find a way to turn on himself, you could add a title reign, Big Show-Big Show. I feel like that's the inevitable conclusion of Show's story this year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My wife finds my wrestling jokes to be idiotic at best.

    ReplyDelete
  19. How about this - Roman Reigns farts and busts his hernia again and Royal Rumble/Mania plans are scuppered once more! Reigns uses the time off to practice his comeback promo every day non-stop so he doesn't look like a total buffoon like at TLC

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm picturing someone who has seen something so funny that he can't keep his chuckles to himself. He has to let them out and laugh out loud.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lesnar is a really difficult problem to navigate, and of course it's WWE's fault for painting themselves into this corner. More and more it's looking like they're just going to have to accept that they screwed themselves by putting him over Taker last year.

If Brock beats Cena, the only logical match for WM is Brock vs. Reigns. Not only is it painfully obvious who's going over, but it's a distinct possibility the match underwhelms sabotaging Reigns from the start. Reigns is still a work in progress in the ring, and who knows what you get from Brock.

If Cena beats Brock, then what the hell was the point of pushing Brock so hard this past year and keeping the belt on him so long. It puts him almost exactly where he was when he left at WM20. A meaningless feud to get him a meaningless WM match when he can job to someone on the way out the door, and oh by the way, he probably doesn't care and turns in a crappy match.

If Rollins cashes, barring them going all in on a Shield Triple Threat for the title match and pushing all three guys to the moon in the next two months, you can't keep the belt on Rollins. Rollins/Cena is not a WM main event match and Rollins/Reigns doesn't get over "This is the Roman era!" enough. So realistically it's something like Cena beats Brock, Rollins cashes and wins, Cena beats Rollins at the Feb PPV.

In all honesty, Cena going in as the champ and doing the WM6 pass the torch match with Reigns is the best option they have, but it means Brock pretty much ends up being a waste of time and money.

Or they just resign Lesnar, tease a rift between him and Heyman and turn him babyface, but Lesnar isn't going to be around enough for that to matter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bit early to say yet: Brock v cena and Brock v reigns could be great matches.

But enough about the PPV and RAW....

    ReplyDelete
  24. Also, Rollins is being pushed as the next big heel. He flakes out with the case, he will be a loser.

Nothing wrong with him cashing in on reigns after a long reigns/cena match, and have reigns chase him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It was crazy because we'd hadn't seen Gorilla in that position (pun intended) of being physical. He hadn't wrestled much since the early 1980s except for a few spot appearances, so it was like seeing your grandpa get powerbombed.

Nobody ever put their hands on Tunney. Nowadays we see authority figures get manhandled all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think she cares. Brock has been back since 2012 and she hasn't been mentioned at all. I honestly think she has no interest in being involved in WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not trolling, I have a differing opinion that I like to offer. I have plenty of people who agree with what I say an there a many who don't. If I were a real troll I'm confident Id be banned swiftly like the fool from the other night.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The one time Tunney did get involved was when Flair dumped him on his ass at Survivor Series 91 and it was shocking at the time. Same along the lines as your take on Gorilla.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ah, forgot about that. Same idea though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bingo! No one cares about him because they've been told they shouldn't.

    ReplyDelete

  37. How anyone thought Shawn Michaels could carry WWF when he was up against Hogan in WCW is beyond me. Yeah, Hogan's babyface popularity was waning in early 1996 (Uncensored 1996, ugh), but even Hogan at his least popular is far bigger than Shawn Michaels' popularity.

It's a very sad post cash in period though.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sure but why even put golddust in that position? they had tons of JTTS on the roster then that could've filled the void. His point isn't that it's a dealbreaker, but just lacks logic when you're trying to build up a guy like the IC champ

    ReplyDelete
  40. HBK? He did work with him that summer, just didn't put him over. That's why they should've been firm with HBK and booked the programs according to what's best. I mean, Vader was there for the taking - that was a pretty big deal when he jumped and he could've kicked everyones ass until HBK or whomever beats him. Would've elevated everyone instead of that nonsense run we got in 96

    ReplyDelete
  41. It was a better idea than Bret Hart.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bret was anti-charisma.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  44. the whole dinner scene is the best part of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I took it as they were showing he was high enough up the card to get a title shot but not quite good enough just yet.

I agree with you guys that it wasn't needed and especially that they chopped the match up, I just think the loss really hurt him because it was to Bret.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think Diesel squashed IC Champ Jeff Jarrett on the road to Mania XI the previous year too.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Michaels organically became popular due to his ring work and cool character so it was worth a shot. The problem is that once they realize someone is popular they start trying to make them more popular and ruin the initial appeal.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What's crazy is that I had a similar conversation at the water cooler today. Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I liked Shawn but I was always a Bret fan to. I found Bret dry and boring at this point. He'd been doing the same act for years, he needed to go away for awhile to freshen up.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Remember when Piper went to hit Flair with a chair and got McMahon by mistake? I felt like that was pretty big back then.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Exactly, HBK didn't put Vader over. They had a really good match at SummerSlam, but it did nothing for Vader. If Shawn had sold for Vader the way Sting did in WCW, Vader's WWF career could have been more prosperous

    ReplyDelete
  52. It is only a matter of time before Rowan is associated with Hornswoggle.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I liked how Gorilla gave him some old man chops before he got taken out.

    ReplyDelete
  54. He also would've gained valuable momentum.

    ReplyDelete
  55. WWF tried soemthing with Shawn Michaels. He was the best guy they had in 1995/1996. What are they supposed to do? Throw up their hands and say "TURN ON NITRO--WE CAN'T COMPETE WITH HULKSTER"

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yep. And the fact that Wrestlemania 31 is the exact ten-year anniversary since the first-ever MITB match period would make Rollins' historical cash-in sweet as well.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Can't say I agree with your examples regarding the briefcase. Miz was red-hot at the time and it felt like a big deal, just not enough of one to go all the way to the WM27 main event. That's what cooled him off. Ziggler's felt like a HUGE moment with that smarky post-WM crowd. It was his concussions the that slowed him down the rest of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You have to see him in person to appreciate him.

    ReplyDelete
  59. and then created separation

    ReplyDelete
  60. I thought the double turn match where Del Rio got the belt back and Ziggler won over the fans with his tenacity was pretty good, and really got Ziggler over. But they needed to stay with him and he should have won the belt back from Del Rio after he recovered. That would have really been his crowning moment. Instead, I think the company didn't trust him due to the concussion and they dropped him down the card.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Del Rio was basically a momentum killer for anyone who feuded with him by that point in his career.

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's bullshit! Everyone in that goddamn dressing room knew Bret had the greatest charisma of all time!

    ReplyDelete
  63. "Bischoff sent a letter to Vince’s secretary" -- there were many times that Eric CALLED Vince to brag/mock him and Vince wouldn't take the call. I loved braggadocios Eric.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Vince's orgasms during every broadcast for Shawn KILLED him rather quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh, I didn't say they should give up, but Michaels wasn't cutting it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well, pushing a male stripper as your top babyface is an easy way to turn off your predominantly male fanbase.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hey, he started it. I would've Vaderbombed his old ass too.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That was such a great moment. Everyone assumes the show is over and then Vince comes out - "Nobody goes anywhere!"

    ReplyDelete
  69. "After this aired, Bischoff sent a letter to Vince’s secretary asking him to continue doing the skits because it was driving Nitro’s ratings upwards even more. BOOM."

I don't know which part of this sentences is the most dated: "sent a letter," "Nitro," or ratings meaning anything.

  70. Greatest performance of Gorilla Monsoon's Career:

    A) Heenan's foil at Royal Rumble 1992
    B) Standing up to Vader
    C) Airplane Spinning Muhammad Ali
    D) Ignoring Art Donovan at King of the Ring 1994
    E) Other

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  77. This was when I started falling off the HBK train, all the pandering and clear (to my still-kayfabed mind) favoring of Shawn. To this day when I hear Vince say "the boyhood dream" I grit my teeth. I was so pissed when Bret lost the title I switched over to WCW and focused on the now for almost all of 96 & 97.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Exactly dude. It was SO perfect. With virtuous Cena defending his title against all odds ..... and the ULTIMATE OPPORTUNIST~! swoops with the hottest, sluttiest, classiest mess of woman be his side (that he also stole) and shocks us all. More than anything else I feel like this moment MADE Edge for good.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  83. It was pretty sweet when Ultimo Dragon had ALL those title belts.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  89. Vader also spent a majority of the summer house show season getting jobbed out to Warrior and Ahmed Johnson, and it scarcely needs explaining how counterproductive that was.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Jarrett also jobbed to Undertaker in a KOTR qualifier (though IIRC Double J got in more offense than you'd expect). I don't mind Goldust losing here but I kind of wish it'd been a pinfall and not a clean submission. This is where I wish Bret had had a legit KO pinfall finisher instead of a bunch of rollup variations.

This may have been your greatest moment as a wrestling writer.

  99. Yeah, I don't think Vince had ever gotten physically involved up to that point.

    ReplyDelete
  100. If Rollins cashes in the briefcase and loses, you kill him as a challenger. How is he a threat to win in a scheduled match if he couldn't beat the champ unexpectedly after they had already wrestled a match?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yeah, Miz cashing in got a gigantic reaction but he got saddled with Orton at the Rumble who didn't do him any favors then the bizarre Lawler title chase. By the time Mania rolled around, he was second to the Rock / Cena feud.

They should have paired him against Morrison or Bryan at the Rumble and EC - both could have made him look strong going into Mania and wouldn't have been hurt by a loss instead of Miz getting fluke victories over Orton.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Agreed, T'was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Brock vs. Orton would be terrible. How about Bray who at least would take some crazy bumps for Brock and vice versa?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah, but Cena/Lesnar would mean zero buys to WrestleMania. They might as well announce the match the night after the Rumble then never speak of it again til the show itself. 4th match between the two with Lesnar having won 2 and losing one by DQ. Cena will come off as a crybaby who just had to get a win, while Lesnar is the guy the fans know is leaving. It'd look like Lesnar just got bored with wrestling Cena every time and quit.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yes that was funny. The actual scene though was awesome too. Was that the one where cornette was ranting and raving about how he's a monster, he can't be controlled, he's never happy, etc or what that the Rumble? Vader just throwing shit around the locker room was fantastic.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  112. I'm of the mind that there needs to be a stip that the briefcase guarantees you a shot at the PPV of your choice so long as you decide it by the RAW after the previous PPV, eliminating the sneaky cash in that produces fluke champs who go nowhere.

Unless they have Rollins cash in on Reigns at WM.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Weird, I thought Vader debuted in the 1996 Rumble; I guess he was "reinstated" by that point.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Yeah, I wasn't a mark anymore, but I was DEFINITELY still pretty naiive about a lot of things about wrestling, and even *I* new plain as day that Shawn was walking out of WrestleMania with the Title. They all but telegraphed it, harder than they've every telegraphed a finish.

  116. Vince 101 was to job out other companies' top stars in order to prove that WWF guys were the best. WCW & TNA usually pushed them to the top right away, but Vince was usually about PROVING his own guys were the best. Only Flair really trumped this.

    ReplyDelete
  126. There's no harm having Goldust's first loss be to Bret, but I think Cruel was meant to say giving Goldust his first loss with zero buildup was a booking mistake as it killed most of Goldust's credibility and they left some money (not a lot, but some) on the table.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  139. Most of the scenarios I'm reading have Rollins cashing in between the Rumble and WrestleMania, but since Rollins has until July to cash in, I'd wait until later.
I'd have Cena beat Brock at the Rumble in a double-turn match that WWE DOESN'T beat us over the head with ("Austin and McMahon are together!! Austin has sold his soul!!"), setting up Subtle Heel Cena vs. Reigns for the title at WrestleMania. Reigns wins clean, no BS, and has his proper star-making WM moment.
Rollins, meanwhile, reignites his feud with Ambrose during the Rumble match and they have their "blow off" match at 'Mania.
Let Reigns' first feud as champ be with somebody who's not Kane, and then save Rollins-Reigns for July. Seth's character is too much of an opportunist to do a proper "I'm cashing in next week so get ready" challenge, so it'll have to be a sneak attack at the June PPV or on a RAW, he wins the belt, and he and Reigns have the rematch at MITB '15.

  142. He claims to have held some version of the WWWF tag titles with Toru Tanaka as "The Orientals" (it's in the "classic" match from the 70s they show on the first of the two Prime Times on the Network) but I can't find a record of it. Some people think they might have had him say Tanaka was his partner instead of Bill Watts or something like that. Like how Jesse said he was tag champs with Adonis when it was really Murdoch.

How about *sniff* Rollins waits till NEXT years MiTB, cashes it in on Reigns (who holds till the Summer) loses the match, then enters that years MiTB match, wins it AGAIN! And then cashes it in that night on Reigns...and wins?

Am I fucking genius or what?

  148. Man, I'm struggling with the 'not Kane' part. Who else is there for a World Title feud?! Actually, you're right, he should feud with Big Show. And then Kane.

And I think Reigns/Lesnar would suffer even more in that regard. because it would look like Reigns got the belt by default because Lesnar's leaving. And it's not even the blowoff of a long feud, which at least Rollins/Reigns could be billed as. I can't see people getting fired up about a match with such a foregone conclusion with a babyface with little more going for him except "hey, it's his turn".
