  5. Today's TNA news

    - In regards to TNA’s issues with production on Wednesday night, the Manhattan Center’s production equipment was being used. The control board reportedly went down and then after they got it working again, it went down. They were about to send a dark match to the ring to fill time for time, but then finally got it working.

    – Dave Sahadi, who usually directs the episodes of Impact, was not at the NYC tapings to direct the show on Wednesday. This was because he was in Nashville overseeing the installment of the new post-production equipment the company will be using to edit their show going forward.

    – TNA shot at least one segment, in the streets, featuring MVP’s new crew. They are now known as the Beat Down Klan (BDK).

    – Representatives from Destination America were at both nights of tapings this week. They were reportedly happy with the shows.

    – The crowd last night was down from the Wednesday taping (650-700 fans), reportedly at 300-350 fans.

    – There is talk that TNA will return to the venue in March to tape more TV.

  8. No comments about Lawler getting demoted?

    ReplyDelete
  9. When was he demoted?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Demoted, pushed into retirement, tomato, tomahto...

    ReplyDelete
  11. He's going to do Smackdown now. It's pretty much a demotion, pushing him to retire.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Matt_INDEED's ZOMBIEJanuary 9, 2015 at 8:53 AM

Lawler got demoted?! I thought he had vaginal warts or something.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Smackdown is getting a push so they're moving Lawler over to that show, he's still on an A-show and is still calling PPV it's not a demotion more of a sideways move.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Have they ever HEARD of the BDK before?

Here's major news for the day:

Mountie vs. Morales is like Ali v. Frazier.

    and...

    Hoss killed me.

    That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm assuming they are trying to refer to BDK intentionally because they think it's a positive reference to make.

It's a gang in Chicago (at least it's toned down quite a bit - they were bigger in the 90s).

    ReplyDelete
  21. You just can't find good help these days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What purpose does modern commentary have? Is there really an audience member out there who relies on commentary to understand the WWE product?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Shinsuke Nakamura is awesome and simply a fun guy to watch. Where it's his wrestling style, mannerisms, image or big match entrances he maybe my favorite guy in all of wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sometimes I'm really fucking confused, but then they explain that they're just having fun.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Someone in the other thread said that there is no wrestler in the post-Hogan era more boring than The Mountie. I say he's wrong. Mike Rotunda, after becoming IRS, was the most boring wrestler on planet Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Its current purpose is pushing brand labels ("The Vigilante!" "The Lunatic Fringe!"), social media, cross-promotions and whatever else Vince screams into their ear.
What commentary is supposed to do is not necessarily help the audience understand the product. It's supposed to, big-picture, get the talent over. And that's done by making the match seem important by treating it like a big, important fight and calling it as such, and if necessary filling in backstory gaps as to why we should care. It shouldn't be that hard to do. Fucking Matt Striker and Vampiro do a good job of it on Lucha Underground. for god's sake.

  27. Kevin Thorn

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes and I think it was in a later game too? They brought it back... like 2002 or something?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Foley was at one point my favorite wrestler. I would spend lots of dough as a teenager getting his Japan and ECW tapes. After reading his first book, I had even more respect for him.

My respect for him dwindled after each successive book (especially the "I love Melina like a sister, but I totally want to fuck her" book) and each comeback after his One Night Stand 2006 match.

I'm surprised that WWE even still acknowledges him at this point with all the bashing he does of the company's direction and how he talks about how hurt he is when he isn't contacted for stuff. I think he regrets having to give up the spotlight so early (he retired from full-time competition at 35) and misses being in the spotlight because the fan love for his 1998-2000 run went to his head.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Who said that? I want names! Mountie sang and had a cattle prod. Nothing boring about that!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think so, fun little callback

    ReplyDelete
  32. Justin Credible was far more dull. I.R.S at least cut decent promos

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think if I was a wrestling company and wanted to make a run at national tv, I would do Saturday mornings. Everyone is home, no competition, and a proven record of success.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Matt_INDEED's ZOMBIEJanuary 9, 2015 at 9:14 AM

I think you can also add the entire DOA and Los Boriquas groups, and add their feud to one of the most boring of all-time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Without WWE commentary why else would The Great Gazoo end up trending on Twitter in 2014?

mmm, won't people be recovering from a hangover the night before?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was just having this conversation with my smark co-worker the other day. Why has no one done anything on Saturday morning in so fucking long?

    ReplyDelete
  38. There was Saturday Morning slam not so long ago.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Welp, I am selling my Wii U and games in favor of a PS4.

    ReplyDelete
  40. WWE ran a Saturday Morning Slam kid show for awhile. It usually featured one match at the end. It was Brodus Clay for multiple weeks and I stopped watching. It was also geared at small children. Like 7 year olds.

    ReplyDelete

I'll give you $100 for it.

    ReplyDelete

    $98. That's my final offer!

    ReplyDelete
  45. As I've gotten older (only 38), I'm usually beat on Friday night after working all week. I use that to relax and then go out on Saturday night.

    ReplyDelete
  46. $92 and its yours! (plus $178 shipping)

    ReplyDelete
  47. 3 $20's, 3 $10's, and 10 $1's. With one Sacajawea gold dollar as well.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. And yeah, I'd expect anything on Saturday morning to be geared toward kids and likely not interest me. Still think it's silly that there's no Saturday morning wrestling show.

    ReplyDelete
  49. $95...

What sort of game bundle are we talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Matt_INDEED's ZOMBIEJanuary 9, 2015 at 9:19 AM

Hmmm....the shipping would indicate your placing a small boat in the box. I will pass, sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Same here. I just want to chill the fuck out at home on Friday night. I went out to the downtown bars right after work last Friday for the first time in forever and was home by like 10. So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You can use the proceeds to buy TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wii U 32GB deluxe set with everything as if bought new. I also have Metroid Prime Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, ZombiU, Mass Effect 3, Batman: Arkyham Asylum Armored Edition, and a Wii Remote + Nunchuk with motion plus.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Are any of those fun?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Or at least pay for a couple tapings.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I avoid Friday and Saturday nights in the city like the plague. The PLAGUE. Too busy, too loud, people pissing up the side of walls, it's decadent carnage.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It doesn't haven't to be geared towards kids, necessarily. I think just a good, true wrestling promotion a la roh would work. TNA's swerve heavy pseudo reality garbage wouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I want a Saturday Morning show that starts at Noon and is geared toward children with enough blood and tits to keep the drunk uncle who barely slept last night entertained while he watches these kids for his sister because she let him sleep over after his mother in-law kicked him out of his apartment because she found out he had been sleeping with his ex-wife again.

    ReplyDelete
  60. IT'S THE SATURDAY MORNING BLOOD AND TITS SHOW

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just finished watching The Wiz. First time I've seen it since I was a kid. There definitely had to have been some heavy drugs used to come up with that scenery.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've decided to keep the Wii U!

  63. Adam "Colorado" CurryJanuary 9, 2015 at 9:24 AM

300 is about 1/7 of what it holds.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I really wish they'd bring back the concept of the Sunday afternoon ppv.

    ReplyDelete
  65. One thing I like about today's social media is that the average fan can talk to many celebrities and praise/scold them for stuff..
For example, Adam Carolla fired his "sidekick" Alison Rosen by email over the holiday break and gave no notice to the audience and gave a lame reason for it, no tribute show, and not even a chance for her to say good-bye. He is getting roasted on facebook and twitter over it and he has been responding to many over twitter about it. Alison has been getting a lot of love on social media and she feels genuinely blessed with the outpouring from her fans.

    ReplyDelete
  66. More boring than Lance Storm?

    (shields up)

    ReplyDelete
  67. That can be avoided most weekends where I live. I don't live in a big city, for one thing (about 130,000 people) but downtown does get pretty hopping on the weekends. Some places I won't even try to bother with, but fortunately my favorite bars, while busy and crowded, are still usually pretty laid-back.
But my girlfriend and I usually go to our best friends' house in a quiet neighborhood on the other side of town on Saturday nights to kick it. Then I'll walk to the bars when we get home before midnight, since they have a baby now.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 9, 2015 at 9:30 AM

I go out some Fridays, but I never feel bad about staying home and chilling out like I used to. Saturday night is the universal go out and party night, Friday night loses that feeling as you get older. Hell TV ratings for Friday shows are going up more and more now (thank god for Constantine).

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think Shawn Michaels 95-97 dresses exactly like Mr. Slave from south park. No wonder Vince pushed him

It's a double edge sword. The sheer number of racist scumbags black soccer players have to deal with online is mind-boggling.

    ReplyDelete
  71. It's insane, genuinely shocking. Stan Collymore used to retweet all the abuse he got, it was awful.

    ReplyDelete
  72. On top of that, getting a Twitter message from Adam Carolla is the highlight of some people's entire lives. So there's that.

  74. The weird thing is, I actually like going out on Friday nights more. I have to come in to work (just from like 9-noon, but still) every other Saturday morning, so do a lot of my friends, and my girlfriend is usually busy until later in the evening on Fridays anyway, so I almost never do anything on Friday.
But if I have nothing to do on Saturday, I really do not mind laying around hungover. Hate being hungover on Sunday, because it makes the impending doom of going back to work on Monday even worse.

  86. It's hit or miss at best. It's not for lack of talent though. When guys like ReDragon (ROH tag champs) venture out to other feds, their work looks so much better just because of little things like less contrived spots.

ROH TV is pretty bad but if you ever get the itch to watch again, find any of their big shows. Their PPV's are above average, typically with 1 legitimate **** match. Final Battle 2014 had a 6 man with Young Bucks & ACH vs Daniels & Kazarian & Cedric Alexander and ReDragon vs Time Splitters. Both in the **** range.

  97. It's pretty sickening how much people feel qualified by a celebrity acknowledging their existence on Twitter... or how annoyed people get when celebrities don't acknowledge them.

One of my old bosses was on Twitter, but didn't tell the office. We used to look it up and crack up because she'd use it just to tweet things at celebrities and then complain on Twitter when they didn't acknowledge her. This was a 40-something year old woman by the way sending messages to bands like Train and Nickelback asking them when their next local show was, and then 20 minutes later posting "Well, I guess you don't want me to buy a ticket then if you're not going to respond. I have all your CDs!"

Yeah, I'd much rather be hungover and lazy on Saturday than on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Of course they are. You always have to kill false flag operatives so they don't spill the beans. The false flag beans. #infowars

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ha, true. My alcohol tolerance is so much lower than it used to be, which I guess is good. Plus, my girlfriend quit drinking almost a year ago, which makes it less fun to get really hammered (even if she isn't with me). So if I do, it's a planned event where I know I'm drinking my face off well in advance.
I don't even know why I'm so opposed to being hungover on a Sunday, anyway. For one thing, as long as I stick to beer I'm usually fine. Also, I almost never have anything to do on a Sunday (be it social or something actually productive) whereas on Saturdays I almost always do.

    ReplyDelete

  114. Just imagine how many people send twitter messages to someone like Taylor Swift an hour. I couldn't imagine having to sift through that, which is probably a mix between "I LOVE YOU TALYOR!" "I want to fuck you" "i hope you are dead" "please RT me I am so sad" etc.

  117. Poor Rotunda. He was such a good wrestler, but not great as a babyface, so he kinda had to be a heel, but that meant having to work with such lumbering stiffs (literal lumber--like 2X4-wielding Jim Duggan). He & DiBiase both came along at just the wrong moment, either a few years too early or too late; and in the wrong place.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Years and years ago I went over to a girl's place to watch a movie. She asked me what she should rent and I told her I didn't care (I didn't plan on watching the movie, if you get what I mean). I came off and it was fucking Maid in Manhattan. MAID IN MANHATTAN. And we WATCHED the movie because she "really wanted to see it." And she laughed at the stupidest shit.

I left and never called her again.

Fuck, I still get mad when I think about it.

I'd be up till 4 AM and then be out at the tailgate for an 11 AM Illinois football game pounding beers by 7:30. The few times I get to a tailgate now I make sure I get really stoned and go to bed early on Friday so I can actually drink and kick it the whole next day.

  130. Ummmmm....unless they're setting up a music download service, I don't understand the iTunes thing. Seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot with that, but whatever. People will just pirate it, and they will make $0 instead of the $0.99 to $1.29 that they would have otherwise.

  150. The best first date I ever had was a girl who invited me over to her place to watch movies. We had awesome chemistry and were totally into each other, but then she chose to watch Human Centipede of all things. No making out during that one. After that, we threw on Romancing the Stone and commenced with the making out.

  152. Weird they'd use clan in a black led group. Is Cabana available to front the final solution mafia?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Yeah, I had forgotten about that. I *never* use iTunes for that purpose, so I kind of forget they have a movie/music video store. I tend to mainly use it for the music, so that's why I thought that they were pulling all their themes/ect. off of there.

    ReplyDelete
  154. But at least they're not named after a black only gun wielding street gang.

  158. We were discussing this on another less-popular thread: which wrestler is the biggest mark for himself?
    Candidates include:
Bret "I was more popular in England than Davey Boy Smith" Hart
Mick "Why isn't WWE returning my calls?" Foley
Michael "The Freedbirds invented everything" Hayes

    Other

  161. Well, the other two came up to Bret with tears in their eyes saying only Bret could be the biggest mark for oneself

  162. It will be insane to look at the vote totals for the IC tourney. Pedro/mountie and godfather/perfect would have like 10000 and flair/mcintyre will have 1000

  164. WWE might be feeling some pressure to heat up SmackDown again. Ratings aren't great, and SyFy is really trying to boost their profile with quality shows. I'm still getting the vibe that SmackDown might end up being moved to USA eventually.

  166. The paradigm had really shifted on Kenny Omega with the heel turn. He was always great in the ring but I've never seen this much personality in his work. The chainsaw thing was awesome and kudos to Matt Striker for setting it up so well with his explanation.

  172. Mick is a mark for himself but he also puts over guys he's worked with and can be rather self depreciating.
Remember he turned down several runs because he didn't think he could perform at a high enough level anymore.
Biggest mark for himself has to be CM Punk
"I only walked out on WWE and didn't speak to them for 4 months, how dare they fire me"
"I am straight edge, how dare they ask me to do the same drug testing as everyone else"
"The WWE made me continue wrestling when injured and when I was injured they tried to make me finish a match early against my wishes"
"WWF never pushed or promoted me, I should have been on every bit of merchandise everywhere"

  180. Plus WWE don't know how well he can wrestle at the moment (being ring fit, doesn't mean you are back to the same level) so putting him on a show they can edit for his first match makes perfect sense.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Great stuff. Can't believe he panned his knees and thighs pre match to pull that off. A couple baby oil packets to use during the match when no one is watching. Good stuff by the ref.

  184. I believe I reviewed the first... 5 shows? I remember thinking at the time that Danielson vs Daniels vs Low Ki was 2002 MOTY. Ended up changing my mind after watching Angle/Benoit vs Mysterio/Edge from No Mercy that year. Haven't revisited the former match in literally 12 years. Probably worth looking at again.
