Sheamus Update

Sheamus remains out of action with an injury and the WWE has been quiet on the situation. Sheamus is not advertised for any WWE events until after WrestleMania as he is listed as being on the post-WM tour of Europe in April.

Remember when, way back when he was in WWE, some observers thought Ken Anderson would be the second-coming of Steve Austin?

    Good times.

Wonder what is wrong with Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Sheamus is down? Well, WWE is going to have to rewrite Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania plans now!!!

  6. Sheamus for "surprise" entry in the Rumble, given that they're being strangely quiet about him?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 9:28 AM

"Strangely quiet" will probably be the reception he gets from the fans if he is indeed a surprise Rumble entrant.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Very true. Or possibly "CM Punk" chants.

He's good in the ring, but needs a complete reboot of character to actually feel like there's any point to him. He and Drew should have been an arse-kicking "Celtic Warriors" tag team.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 9:29 AM

He doesn't get injured after winning the MITB briefcase and he's a world champ.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 9:30 AM

He wouldn't get CM Punk chants. I'd say he'd probably receive "Randy Savage" chants.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anderson's entire time in WWE was around the time I wasn't getting to see it, so I had absolutely no idea who he was or why he kept saying his own name twice when I saw clips of him :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I wonder if there'll be any ECW chants instead.

Orton enters, to be met with "We want Sandman!" chants. Sheamus gets "Sabu! Sabu! Sabu!" etc.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He could talk a bit but is subpar in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 9:34 AM

If Orton is greeted with Sandman chants, I want him to latch on a chinlock to some guy and just hold it for twenty minutes for the mutant Philly fans. I don't like Orton but to cheer for Sandman is just plain stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anderson came up around the same time Vince bought the AWA tape library. That company had the habit of repeating the wrestlers' last name twice so Anderson picked it up for his character and hailing from Green Bay furthered the AWA connection. He did well for awhile; even beating Shawn Michaels clean on RAW. Anderson eventually fell out of favor and there he is with TNA.

Jesse Godderz resigned? I thought he left already because TNA wasn't giving him anything to do.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think I've seen him wrestle but he was awesome on Big Brother. The man was born to play a heel in wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So, a normal Orton match on the whole then? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Congratulations on the honorary BSK membership.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rockin' Todd ParkerJanuary 3, 2015 at 9:45 AM

Same here. He wasn't half-bad when I saw him in TNA. He would definitely make a great heel that the audience would turn into a babyface.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anderson is terrible, nobody likes him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. TNA's audience can barely be bothered to turn up, let alone turn wrestlers.

    *self high five*

    ReplyDelete
  24. Madison isn't the worst knockout and a decent heel. Anderson can fuck off forever.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'll say this for Anderson, he gets the little things right. The black gloves in Aces & 8s. The "You shall not pass!" during some cage match. He's a great character. He's also a shit worker. He's perfect to fill out the midcard, but somewhere along the way people got the illusion that he's a genuine star.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Really? I just assumed he was doing an old baseball announcer echo bit. Like the Lou Gerhig thing...."I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth...earth...earth..." When we were kids we would "announce" ourselves batting that way

If it was an awa thing, do you think more than three people ever got the reference?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have TNA resigned anyone good recently?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sheamus could still be rehabbed if they did something to make him stand out, other than Smiling Albino. This company has no problems giving different ethnicities and races the most stereotypical gimmicks, yet they turn an arse kicking Irishman into a bowl of oatmeal.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Loved repeating my name when I stepped in the batter's box with that yellow wiffle ball bat.
I think the fans thought it was a goofy thing Anderson was doing that somehow got over. At least that what I think it is.
And the old fashioned microphone dropping from the ceiling for Anderson to do his own intro? It was more of a 50-70s wrestling thing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 10:04 AM

    Thanks! A dream come true!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Shave his entire head, stop him smiling, and have him kick ass. Everything about his entire look and character is goofy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Also, get him a new theme. Not some down-tuned modern rock bullcrap that doesn't fit his personality.

What I'd like to see is something similar to the APA. Sheamus just hangs out in the back drinking beer and someone comes to him needing a favor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Drew is sooo much better now that he's free to work a stiffer style in the indies. I don't understand how the WWE missed on him.

    ReplyDelete
  34. My local CW affiliate in Phoenix is airing the Cardinal/Panther game later today. That is just bizarre. I think this is the first sporting event that aired on that station since the CW was formed.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nice avatar! Did you end up buying it on eBay, too?

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's because the game airs on ESPN, and since not everyone has cable, a local affiliate will pick the game up.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The new APA thing is a good shout, actually. Who does he pair up with for that?

    ReplyDelete
  38. He's Sheamus; he doesn't need a partner!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Finn Baelor! Or better yet, make Sheamus Finn's WWE Bad Luck Fale.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Plus nobody likes him because he's a dick and a bully.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly, although I there'd be serious tweener potential there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I didn't know ESPN was airing it; figured they would have Bowl Games on, I've seen the Cards locally on ABC (pre-season), CBS (the Thursday game vs St Louis) and the independent station when they're on Monday night. But this is a bizarre market anyway so I shouldn't be surprised.

  44. Watching some TNA 2014 in prep for the comeback. It's such a collosal waste of time. This is a random episode of Impact and Angle and Joe just put their careers on the line in a nothing tag match against Magnus and EC3. This company is so stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah, I'm not sure how they determine who gets to pick the game up.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anyone with a brain would too, but don't forget Dixie's in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Long told a story in his RF shoot about the Crockett's calling him the n-word while he was on the plane getting a beer so the Rock & Roll Express left the plane with him and drove to their destination.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sunny did okay during her "gold digger" phase with the Bodydonnas, Gunns, and Godwinns. (Wait, was she even with the Godwinns at all?)

    ReplyDelete
  66. As far as I'm concerned, you are the best new poster we had this past year. Doesn't really fit into or produce any more conversation, but I just thought I'd say it.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

He can be carried by the right wrestler.

I would have put him at the announce table awhile ago...

...or though the announce table. Either one.

    ReplyDelete
  74. He did a lot of stuff in OVW that was funny. And did some good things with the Aces & Eights stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It would at least show them that you wouldn't put up with it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Here is my review of that shoot

    http://www.rspwfaq.net/2014/11/kayfabe-commentaires-youshoot-interview.html

    ReplyDelete
  77. He was fine when he first signed with TNA and even at the beginning of last year with his feud with Bully Ray. The problem is, besides that, he's been lost in the shuffle.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJanuary 3, 2015 at 10:39 AM

There was a match that he got his ass kicked and pinned. While he was laying on the ground he signaled for the mic to come down from the ceiling. He grabbed the mic and just said, "Ow!"

I laughed for 10 minutes after that.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hart's advice on blades, reliance on blades, his belief in blades even during the 2000s, and shaping of blades for others all make me wish I had known him.

    ReplyDelete
  80. That Sam Shaw feud was uh........fucking horrible. Cant blame that all on him though.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yeah that feud was awful.

This is why they need the TV belt back. He would have made a good challenger for a secondary title.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'd love a TV title back. They could use it for weekly title defenses on Impact or even a bonus match on the Unlocked edition of Impact that airs on Saturday mornings.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJanuary 3, 2015 at 10:40 AM

I always mention how Shaw looked like one of the agents from the Matrix. I was waiting for him to say, "Goodbye....Mr. Anderson."

    ReplyDelete
  86. I dont think he is as horrible as everyone else in this thread but no way is he a Main Event talent. He has a place in the middle of the card.

    ReplyDelete
  87. That is probably the WON Worst Feud of the Year winner

    ReplyDelete
  88. If you haven't seen/heard his shoot interviews you should. They're my all time favorite. You learn a lot about how wrestling really worked in the territory days.

    ReplyDelete
  92. And a last name!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Poor Jamie Dundee.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I disagree. His only talking emotion is extremely obnoxious heel with his cadence. He sucks sucks sucks. WWE really dodged a bullet due to his stupidity.

    ReplyDelete
  95. He's said in the past that he really lucked out by growing up in Italy and avoiding all of the AAU stuff. He's definitely not wrong about their practices.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I liked him in WWE here and there and at times in TNA but I think he's gone as far as he's going,

    ReplyDelete
  97. Every time I see those Jones/Cormier ads I can't help but scream "WORK!" All we need is crooked managers and chairshots.

    ReplyDelete
  98. As I'm sure others have stated at this point, Sheamus needs the time off and needs to be repackaged, so it's probably a good thing that he's getting time off.

Everyone here seems to agree that he's a hell of a wrestler and played a damn good bully. The crowd responses for him (and the continuation of his Cena-lite character) over the last year have been tepid. It seems pretty clear what to do with him.

Vince: Can we make him MORE Irish and jovial?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJanuary 3, 2015 at 10:52 AM

Pair him with Fit Finlay and do an Ivan/Nikita Koloff type deal.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJanuary 3, 2015 at 10:53 AM

No. Do the APA gimmick with Big E Langston and Henry.

Side note: If any wrestler should be a mercenary, it should be Big Show. It would explain all of his face/heel turns.

He's right. Euro players are more fundamentally sound.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I hope they don't hug and say "we were just trying to sell the fight" like UFC "blood feuds" usually end up. I want the loser to deck the winner with a wooden stool during the post-fight interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Started 1987 on my watch through on the network. Sucks that they have nothing there that shows the Andre turn.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I loved when Rousey refused to shake hands after the Miesha fight. It's still real to her, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  105. They rarely change anyone these days though. I reckon they'll probably want to keep him face because all the kids round on this damned sceptered isle love him.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Are you going to be there? If so, I hate you.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yeah, I read this sensible, thought-out comment and all I could think was "Or he's just a surprise Rumble entrant & feuds with Russev for a month."

    ReplyDelete
  108. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 11:02 AM

Why exactly did he get fired? Like, yeah, he messed up with Orton but guys make mistakes and are still employed at WWE. But Anderson seems black-balled for life.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I was tempted to buy them after you pointed them out because they definitely need framed and put up somewhere. They're some of the most deranged genius I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I fell asleep watching Hulu Plus last night and have woken up to 2008ish ECW playing based on my preferences/related videos leading Hulu there.

I know the majority of people here would disagree based on the quality of WWECW, but I think it's more rewatchable than the original ECW. Other than the disappointing transition process in late 2006 to mid 2007, it felt a lot like the current NXT product.

And is there anyone (besides Tommy Dreamer) more delusional about the original ECW than Joey Styles? The guy always talks about how he should have never returned to announcing with WWE, but he was actually better with the WWE filter and guidance (like RVD). And the ECW Exposed stuff he did on the network...smh. They had a 2-3 minute clip devoted to the humor of ECW where Styles proclaimed how it was legitimately funny, unlike WWE stuff. I couldn't even muster a chuckle or half-smile when they played the clip. The lesson, as always, is that ECW has not aged well.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Oh my fucking god Dino Bravo with black hair what in the actual fuck

    ReplyDelete
  112. Man, waking up at 9:50 that was horrible and terrible and boy the people on the east coast sure are lucky they don't have to wake up at this imminently reasonable time to watch football.

    Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I don't think he's blackballed so much as they just don't see any worth in him, partly b/c of Orton but also b/c he's injury prone. Hell, I think if Barrett goes down one more time within the next year he's gonna get cut too. They only tolerate but so many hospital trips.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 11:04 AM

  115. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 11:05 AM

Faarooq and Sunny was such a terrible pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  116. ECW more and more every day becomes this very aged product that thinks far too much of itself.

    ReplyDelete
  117. He had the black hair for the first ten years or so of his career. Guess Vince 'updated' his look with the blond when Bravo returned in the late 80s.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I'm at a D-league game. I feel I'm being punished

    ReplyDelete
  119. Couldn't disagree more. WWECW was bland, generic, safe wrestling show that offered nothing. Original ECW literally changed the business.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Night - Honorary BSK MemberJanuary 3, 2015 at 11:07 AM

I think there's more to the story, though. Around the time of his firing, Meltzer reported that WWE officials were told to not even answer Anderson's phone calls, which they don't do unless you fucked up beyond belief.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Give me a Sheamus and Wade Brett European bas ass like tag team with Regal as the manager.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Johnny V was before my time so it's been awesome discovering him on the network. Dude was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJanuary 3, 2015 at 11:10 AM

Was he defending the WWF Canadian title?

    ReplyDelete
  124. As someone with no ECW nostalgia, I enjoy most of the PPVs and matches. But, I pass on most of the stories and the humor they did then. maybe it worked at the time, but it really hasn't aged well.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I don't find Bully Ray a very believable heel. The last show I watched he tried to set his opponent on fire, and this week he's told Anderson he wants to piledrive his children. He's like one of the lamest "omg i am like so shocking?" heels I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Why are they showing a playoff game on ESPN?

    ReplyDelete
  127. ESPN gets a playoff game now as part of their new deal

    ReplyDelete
  128. WWECW with Christian, Swagger, Ryder, Regal, et al. was essentially the first season of NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  129. ESPN is the eater of worlds.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I think things that ARE cutting edge possibly tend to age worse than stuff that's just bland.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I wish CBS and NBC did every game.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Kudos for saying European and not British and thus not needing a geographical slapdown.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I've enjoyed what little of Regal's work I've seen on NXT, but I wish they would find a spot for him on the main shows. Managing those two as a team would be good, and probably the best use of a guy like Sheamus at this point, but every night I pray to the ghost of Andre the Giant that they would just shitcan Lawler & Bradshaw and make the main commentary team Cole & Regal. I know they're never getting rid of Michael Cole until they have to for whatever reason, so I think Regal would be the perfect foil... telling him to shut the fuck up, but doing it all polite & English.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  146. Really? Oh man. TNA's nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  147. This hardly addresses the point I was making. You just mentioned how it was viewed at the time--original ECW was innovative. It still has not aged well with shit storylines and humor. They're just fortunate they had guys like Raven, Pillman, Foley, and Austin to cut the promos that they did.

  149. I like the argument made in the article about worth. I think for better or for worse, Punk WILL be a draw for that first fight. And if Punk brings in some WWE fans to the...dare I say, "real" product it will be more than worth it.

  150. In most cases, I'm voting based on quality of the reign, quality of the booking involved, and quality of work inside the span of the title reign (this is least important to me). When it comes to stuff like Rico/Rikshi or Deuce and Domino... you just bury your head in your arms and call it a night.

  151. That's a horrible thing to say.

  152. 1995 was a bad year lol. If I recall, that Vader-Sting-Bossman 3-way had some odd rules, where it was basically a couple of single matches cobbled together through a flip of a coin. I didn't watch ECW, but any time WCW tried this (the tag title match at a Bash at the Beach, the Starrcade '95 Semi-Main) it just fell flat and without structure. Probably a good thing WWF didn't run with the concept yet.

  153. Divorced from reality...the second round tournament match up that has Tony Atlas, Rocky Johnson, Ric Flair and Roddy Piper in it sounds like a lot of star power...

Put 'em all on CPU control and watch 'em in a fatal fourway, says I!

  154. Eh, he wasn't a total slug. When motivated and with the right opponent he's not too bad

  155. Actually, not a bad little match with a pretty fast pace to it. Usual 80's/90's TV tag clusterfuck ending though.

  156. Barbarian should have just yelled "PANCAKE" out loud to signal that the move was changing... and if anyone questioned him about it afterward... well... let's be honest, no-one was going to do that.

  157. The first four corner match I vaguely remember seeing was on WCW TV and I think it was with some of the TV title circuit at the time of like Z-man and such. It was a tag-in-and-out format and I think with eliminations. It blew my little mind and was one of the coolest things I had ever seen at the time.

  158. Didn't he hate the SST though?

  159. Will Punk try to tap people with the Anaconda Vice? Does that move even hurt for real?

    ReplyDelete
  160. Pretty sure that's irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  161. The anaconda vice is a form of an arm triangle (and not a very good one), which is a blood choke. It doesn't hurt, it just forces unconsciousness. The version he did towards the end of his WWE run had people sell the arm for some reason which was silly but whatever, suspend disbelief and all that.

The version he did years ago was a little bit closer to a standard arm triangle which is a very effective hold but it's more of a strength move. It's not that smaller men can't do it, but like an americana it's one of those things that has the effectiveness increase exponentially as your arm strength increases. For reference, Brock used an arm triangle to finish off Carwin and (re)unify the UFC title. His technique wasn't perfect and Carwin was defending it decently but it's Brock Lesnar squeezing on your head and neck which is rather unpleasant no matter what technique you're using.

So I took a whole lot of words to say that even if he does a Gracie-approved version of an arm triangle it probably won't work because he'll have a strength advantage over literally nobody he faces in MMA.

  162. Dana already said that they would give Punk a fight with a guy who either has no record or one fight. They aren't throwing him in against top guys like they did with BROCK.

For what it's worth, UFC veteran fighter Cole Miller (an outstanding JJ practitioner) is saying that he's trained with Punk before, and Punk will surprise a lot of people.

  165. D'Lo nearly Drozbombed Jeff Jarrett or someone at that Summerslam, too. A really horrifying preview to what his loosey-goosey application of that move would result in.

  167. They should bring in the Green Ranger to fight CM Punk. Neither of them are elite UFC material, but both would draw a big buyrate. And if one of them beats the other decisively, they can get another big buyrate when the winner of the fight gets destroyed by a big name UFC talent.

  168. I'm happy you actually read my article instead of suggesting that Punk should get his arms broken and a skull fracture like that weirdo up there
