BoD Evening Thread

Talk about everything going on tonight here.

Comments

  1. The fans were in awe that he was able to say it without stumbling over his words.

  2. Reigns 3:16 says sufferin' succotash son!

  3. Without hyperbole, I can safely say that was WORSE than any promo Cena has ever cut. And that's just the content end of things. His mannerisms come off SO FAKE. That wink at the camera was so ham fisted and had McMahon written all over it.

This guy is the opposite of Shane Douglas. Unnatural.

  4. Is that a wink? It looks like he just blinks because it appears as though he closes both eyes. ROMAN REIGNS EVEN BOTCHES WINKING!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Bet he can't do a decent belly-to-belly either!

    ReplyDelete
  6. It reminds me of shitty nice guy Diesel in 95 before his awesome heel turn after the loss to Bret. I would think that Reigns has it in him to be naturally cool, but this crap is definitely not working.

  7. Reigns vs. Rollins vs. Ambrose: The Shield Explodes!

  8. Is that Rumble the same year where Mean Gene hollers at her to settle down?

    ReplyDelete
  9. From the looks of it, there was ONE GIRL chanting for Reigns.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He was Benoit-levels of bad when he first started speaking, even in the backstage segments. Also, up to before his surgery, you could see how he'd grab a mic, say something completely unintelligible, and the boys in the back would have to crank his mic volume wayyyyyyyy up to capture what he had to say because on the second sentence he'd be fine. He's the walking definition of speak softly and carry a big stick.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Is there anything worse than everything feeling inconsequential, though? To me that's as bad as it gets.

  12. This world of podcasting, I think, has shown us how personable and well spoken some of these guys are if left to their own devices. Everybody won't be a super megastar but I venture to say that many of the guys that they're pushing right now would do just as well with their bullet points vs. scripted lines.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's also the reason why comics as a medium are fucking dead.

Even just looking at these two guys, I see Reigns as the guy who should be a condescending, elitist heel and Rollins should be the scrappy, rebellious, counter-culture babyface. It's like if Hollywood Dave and Jeff Hardy suddenly decided to swap roles and you expected it to get over.

They absolutely should have done that. Luger was perfect in that role and the character could have really gotten over. The elitist bodybuilder vs. the working man's champion.

I think you're absolutely right, but to me it makes it all the more important to have several guys you book strongly and feature heavily.

Absolutely. And that should not be terribly difficult in a business that has had a monopoly for 14 years. Guys leaving for Hollywood or MMA is a risk, but it's not like they are going to lose their top guys to TNA or ROH.

Dean even got Ciclope over! Wait..... not that Dean?

I keep hoping it's all just one big swerve where he is gonna snap one day and be all "fuck your WWE Universe shit, I'm my own man" and reveal that the whole thing has been an act and he just can't do it anymore. Then he becomes the raging warrior he probably should have been all along.

So are we now in the "Suffering Succotash Era" of WWE history?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Uh...really? Shit, someone forgot to tell me and the every expanding comic shop business in Texa . Crazy. I'll pass it on.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I despise his podcasts. That co-host is AWFUL and it's 65% liberal political nonsense rants.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I actually think he knew the lines were crap, which is why he said it wasn't easy to say, then winked. Would be interesting to see who really has "it", without the scripted promos.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. He should say "Brother" like Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Solid and Rollins can scream "RRRRREEEEEEIIIIIGGGGNNNNSSSSS" like Snake yells out Liquids name.
    2. Substitute donkey dung for poo poo head. Plays much better to the 8 year olds in the crowd.

  25. I wasn't a wrestling fan in '95, so I can't really say anything other than this is clearly the worst period I've ever endured, with the 2002-2003 HHH Reign of Terror as a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  26. a Liquid Snake gimmick would be awesome if anyone could pull it off

    ReplyDelete
  27. cpl kirchner was ahead of his time lol.

    ReplyDelete
  28. its free on directv...

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's one of the biggest reasons I can't watch Smackdown. The heat machine is just too obvious and ridiculous. I guess I can understand why they need it know more than ever but damn.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Much better than previous promos. Ok, the conent is awful, but the delivery has improved. Really cringed for him at REvolution.

    ReplyDelete
  31. on the other hand it's still worth building up other guys, especially while the hot mega star is still around (someone like Mick Foley at least for quite some time was a much bigger name than Bret Hart or dozens of other of that status).

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think bringing ECW into the conversation makes hardly any sense. because in 1995 ECW certainly wasn't that much bigger than today "independents", much less TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  33. exactly. obviously it helped that we didn't see him losing on a regular basis on television.

    ReplyDelete
  34. No, but my point was that ECW was putting out stuff that was considered "revolutionary" at the time and gave you hope that either they'd make it or their ideas would filter into the mainstream. I don't think there's a modern American company, big or small, that has as strong a rep as ECW had in 1995. ROH was close around 05/06 but not so much anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Having been there in 94-95 it was pretty bad. You got the feeling that they really wanted to be good, but really had no idea how to do that any more. So yeah, you got Vince trying everything he could think of and honestly, some of it worked at the time even if it doesn't hold up at all.
Today is a totally different problem. They have everything they need to be successful, but for whatever reason when you watch you get the feeling that they're really trying to make it as bland as possible. Right now they could take the guys they have and an old school booker, and they could have an entertaining show and it would make at least as much money as the current project. People would have to live with natural character development, simple stories and characters that make sense, and a product that's not actively embarassing to be a fan of, but I'm sure they could deal.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Amen! I mentioned on another thread that this was the big difference I felt between NJPW and WWE right now. NJPW *wants* to be a great wrestling company. They love wrestling and want you to love it as much as they do. WWE doesn't just not care about wrestline, they seem to want to embarass you for being a fan and punish you for getting behind anyone they don't tell you to.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is where old-school Vince and the carny bullshit come into play. If I was working for Vince, doing his 320 dates a year and being successful entirely on his whim, and anything even remotely close financially came up, I'd ditch him in a hot second as well.
Everyone talks about how wrestlers are pushed and developed and all that, and yeah, that's what it takes to be successful in the wrestling industry. The problem with VInce, and this has always been the problem, is that he's building you up and developing you to make *him* money. Anything you get out of the process more than making VInce money is an unintentional gift, and Vince sees it like you owe him for it. As soon as he thinks you're not thankful enough for the opportunity to make him rich, he pulls the plug and does his best to make sure you end up with nothing where you started.
The few guys that transcend this (Hogan, Rock, Lesnar) have just made Vince WAY more paranoid about making stars. It's not enough that you become popular, you have to become popular in a way that lets everyone know it's because of Vince. That was you can never refuse him, because he can take it all away just like he gave it to you.
