Daniel Bryan

Scott - now that it's been a year since the Daniel Bryan/crowd hijacking stuff I want to ask a couple of questions.......

1. Has anything like that ever happened in wrestling before?  If so, what/who was involved.

2.  Does the whole thing get enough credit for being a huge deal?  I mean correct me if I'm wrong - but didn't the audience basically change the entire direction of the company - at least from royal rumble to wrestlemania XXX?  That's pretty amazing to me.

3.  Do you think DB will have the same crowd support/momentum when he's back or has the moment passed?

Thanks!

Finally, a fresh topic.

1. I'd say the closest analog was Hulk Hogan getting all those title shots in the AWA because Verne was basically forced into it by crowd reactions, but the dynamic there was totally different, as clearly Hogan was the future of the business and the AWA couldn't actually lock him down.  Other than that, it was such a unique situation with a perfect storm of factors like the Batista backlash that I doubt it will ever be duplicated again.

2.  Well, no matter what happened we were always gonna get Brock Lesnar as champion by Summerslam and John Cena on top again, so I'd say "changed the direction of the company" is going a bit far.

3.  Depends on how much Philly hates Roman Reigns, I guess.

  1. You know nobody clicked on the damn Uso's

  2. I think the impact was diluted by the injury sustained straight after Wrestlemania. If Bryan had stayed healthy I think the momentum would have continued and would have led to some powerful match-ups.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Dude, It's Philly. Bryan is still over with the crowd, and it's Philly!

  4. Dolph - Usos - right - left phone - Nikki - Matadores - right - Miz (Sandow has Dolph's phone)

There, saved you all a bunch of stupidity. Right phone gives you Lana, by the way.

  5. Did you guys know Hogan used to do the Axe Bomber? Yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  6. It's sad because this happened just a year ago and yet they continue to put on lazy and terrible shows.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Bret getting the title instead of Luger was all due to fan reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  8. As shitty as Raw has been lately, I'm still excited for the Rumble. Even if Reigns wins, the Rumble is always fun in some way. Plus, DB is in the match this year so the fans won't be as hostile as last year, although that was the fun aspect of last year.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree that it was significant in the sense that the crowd got SO vocal that they had to alter plans. However, they only really altered plans for Daniel Bryan, not the whole company. Orton vs. Batista was still booked as the main event, with Daniel Bryan shoe-horned in later. It's not as though they had to rework all their plans. It kind of worked out conveniently too, since HHH ended up without an opponent once Punk walked out. As Scott mentioned, it was going to be all about Brock and Cena again anyway, so I'm not sure a spring full of Bryan vs Kane and Bryan vs. Orton was going to be the company-wide shift we really wanted (pre-injury). I'm glad they altered the WM plans, but it didn't really signify a change in the company's approach to anything.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It seemed like we were getting another Kane match. After that, I'm guessing more Orton or Wyatt, and possibly Sheamus? I think the end-state was always Brock winning the title in dominant fashion, whether from Bryan or Cena. I'm not so sure the Bryan title run changes the company's direction

    ReplyDelete
  11. 2. That pretty much explains it all

    ReplyDelete
  12. Gentlemen, please save your trash for the RR, throw it when Roman wins.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hearing the Japanese commentators call that is so hilarious.

    "OX BOMB-A! OX BOMB-A!"

    ReplyDelete
  14. If Reigns is booked to win, I hope the crowd goes berserk and craps all over it. I'd like to see Bryan win and then win at Mania again (not gonna happen), but I'm hoping.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That's the one I was thinking of.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It might happen. You never know...

    ReplyDelete
  17. I can't believe Baltimore-New England is airing on a Saturday afternoon. New England never gets this spot.

    ReplyDelete
  18. They've booked this weekend all backwards. Seahawks/Panthers should be first today and Patriots/Ravens should be primetime tonight. Then Broncos/Cols should be the early game tomorrow and Packers/Cowboys should end the weekend.

"DAMN IT WHY CAN'T I SEND OUT A TWEET ON THIS THING" "Vince that's because your using a type writer"

    ReplyDelete
  20. As long as reigns does no promos at the rumble, he should be ok.

Sheamus knocking out Bryan, leading to the crowd booing him, would be a good way to turn him heel...

    ReplyDelete
  21. They should be booking Roman like Goldberg, squashing a guy every week.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah I think more than anything, Batista flopping is what ultimately steered Vince away from his original plans. It was clear that nobody wanted any part of an Orton/Batista singles match.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tj: anyone check out the evolve show last night or watching the one tonight? Tonight has biff vs uhaa, which should be dope.

I thought Punk walking out changed the direction of the company?

Bryan was elevated to number 2 face, ie the Smark darling alternative, on the back of Punk leaving. Just like Punk was elevated to that position after Edge left.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm of the opinion that Reigns can be good, but is shackled by the WWE creative's concept of what they want him to be. I think if he was given more free reign (no pun intended) the IWC would be behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think they should be booking him somewhere between Corporate Rock and Rick Rude. But then I think he should have been the "Authority darling" heel instead of (or along with?) Seth Rollins to begin with

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agreed. There was no plan for Bryan to ever win the title until they re-shuffled the card and saw that Batista wasn't captivating crowds like they expected.

WWE do what they always do, they fumbled through it all and by chance we got a great payoff, it was sheer fluke not the power of the crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, there was Rumble '94, where Providence basically picked the winner of WrestleMania X.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I get that Bryan was only planned to be involved with Bray Wyatt and then Sheamus in the Mania run-up. Orton vs. Batista for the title was the plan. But how far back did they know they had Batista? They exhausted the Orton-Bryan matches in the fall of '13, with Cena out injured, and it was a total placeholder. However, was the plan always Orton-Batista from the summer of '13 on? If not, what was the WM30 main event planned to be before they got Dave signed?

    ReplyDelete
  31. That would've been a better choice.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It amazes me that they need a team of writers to come up with some of the most boring, basic wrestling I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It wasn't hijacking but the crowd reactions turned Austin face and Bret heel. Austin was supposed to be the heel pain in the ass good guy Bret disposed of and the fans weren't having it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. As soon as dolph showed up and started talking, I couldn't take anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Farva-Mode Engage:

If they had just gone with Undertaker vs. Cena at Wrestlemania XXX, they could have gotten away with any title match they wanted, Orton vs. Batista or otherwise. Like with WM28, where Punk's opponent didn't really matter because his title match was never going to main event over Rock-Cena. I was a big advocate of Taker-Cena, Bryan-HHH, Orton-Batista, Punk-Lesnar II at WM30, but it worked out better for Bryan and Brock that Taker-Cena was never planned.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Orton/Cena? I said it at the time, if Bryan was the guy getting the big babyface win at Wrestlemania he wouldn't have been Orton's first challenger.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'll give WWE this, in WCW they would've had Bryan beat down and had Authority painted on his back anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Is this Sir Funk Doc of speed running fame?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Having Dolph trot some kid around backstage holding a camera would at least be something interesting to fill 3 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'd never survive backstage. I'd be quiet and mind my business and everyone would think I'm an asshole. Then I might try to be friendly and they'll think in politicking. God help me if I openly use an ice pack.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not running Cena/Undertaker ever at a Wrestlemania was a pretty huge oversight.

But hey, we got three Undertaker/HHH wankfests, so there's that.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think the impact was horribly diluted by putting him into a feud with Kane, which immediately made it feel like he wasn't "The Guy" at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Punk was scheduled to face HHH at Mania, wasn't he? I think Bryan would have still factored in the main event somehow, no way they were going to go with Batista/Orton whether Punk was there or not

    ReplyDelete
  44. Absolutely. They would not have run that match ad nauseum with non-finishes at every PPV if he was ever planned to beat Orton straight up at Mania.

The scenario I like: Orton and Bryan trade the belt over the fall (rather than Bryan losing or doing fuck-finishes every time). Orton and Cena are champs headed into the Rumble. Batista wins the Rumble match, with the crowd turning on him because Bryan went from #1 to #29, but got eliminated due to HHH shenanigans. Cena puts the WHT up in the Elimination Chamber match and Daniel Bryan wins the title there. HHH is desperate now. Orton vs. Batista is booked for WWE Title because HHH says his two boys are "best for business". DB wants a chance to close out WM30 and the only scenario possible: a unification match at Mania. Bryan provokes HHH to accept a match for "his" belt (WHT). HHH agrees because his ego is such that he wants to close the show unifying the belt with one of his chosen guys, Orton or Batista. Bryan beats HHH in the classic we actually got. Batista beats Orton for the WWE title (hopefully keeping Dave a little happier, since they delivered on him actually winning the belt at Mania). The show is ended with Bryan vs. Batista. DB unifies the titles. In the aftermatch, HHH can book a triple threat for Extreme Rules (Bryan vs. Orton vs. Batista), since both Orton and Dave lost titles at Mania and are entitled to their "rematch clauses".

    ReplyDelete
  45. Somebody in another thread put it best: Ronan Reigns is like a young QB a franchise can wait another year on. They can a wait a year for Roman's big coronation and have Bryan win the Rumble and the title at 31.

This is wear having a strong secondary title would be a good idea. Roman going over a hot heel for the IC or US title would be a nice moment for him and help pave the way for him next year.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fuck man, they could have run Cena vs. Taker at Wrestlemania 27 for sure. Rock hosting, the ultimate Streak match (coming off of WM26's HBK-Taker match which was the peak of the whole Streak gimmick anyway). Rock costing Cena the match could still have been the catalyst for 28. They can still run Taker vs. HHH at 28 if they must.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That's pretty clever, but in not sure Batista would be happy with an hour long title reign.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreed. But it's more than what he ended up getting. It might have been a fun transition to see Dave working babyface against ratfuck heel Randy Orton in one match, then switching into Hollywood Dave mode for a david vs. goliath style match with Bryan to close the show. Almost Luger-esque.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've seen this mentioned before.. What's the deal with the ice pack story again?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Roman vs. Rusev at Mania would be a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nope, it's James, I just changed my name to my Twitter username, which is a Redman reference.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Panthers shouldn't be anywhere near a prime time slot.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 27 is where I would have done it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. They could have done Miz-Morrison for the WWE Title, with the Edge-ADR nonsense for the WHT. Taker vs. Cena didn't even need a belt.

    ReplyDelete
  55. We just better get Brock/Bryan at some point before Brock leaves. Don't care which ppv just make it happen

    ReplyDelete
  56. When life gets CM Punk down, Punk always asks himself "what would Marty Jannetty do?"

    ReplyDelete
  57. If/when the crowd completely shits on a Reigns Rumble win, they need to call an audible. Put Cena over Brock for the WWE Title either way, turn Reigns heel the night after the Rumble. He and Rollins re-join forces and can put Bryan back on the shelf to piss off the fans, then start his campaign against Cena. Do Cena vs. heel Reigns at Mania 31. Rollins vs. a returning Bryan.

    ReplyDelete

Nothing filters up because the giant floating turd of McMahon is clogging everything.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This is where having the IC or US titles meaning something would come in handy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. And than he has to ask another question because Marty's answer is always "do a bump."

    ReplyDelete
  64. So two of us are gay?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 10, 2015 at 11:40 AM

At this point I think Brock/Bryan and a final Rollins/Ambrose match are the only things that would even have any impact, aside from Sting/Whoever, but that match will be a sad disappointment no matter what. This is gonna end up a pretty humdrum Mania, even if all the matches rock the house. I doubt the PPV buys + Network streams will add up to even 900k, much less a million.

    ReplyDelete
  79. When Marty Jannetty quit the WWE, Vince McMahon wanted to produce The Self Destruction of Marty Jannetty, but after looking back at the archives, they couldn't find one bad Marty match or one bad thing to say about MJ to exploit so the DVD idea was shelved.

  80. For me it's a fun tournament based on a fake sport. The results here aren't exactly official. If backing the Mountie is fun, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm not disagreeing with that. But I fondly remember way more Foley moments and matches than HHH moments and matches.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I know it's been said before but that 1995 Bill Watts gigantic heel beatdown on Diesel, Taker and Shawn was amazing. If I was running RAW, I would have the heels stop being so neutered and do some fucking EVIL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Absolutely. They gave Cena the win over Big Show for the US belt at XX and had him run with that for a long time until winning the big one at XXI, and he turned out okay.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oh fuck you for making me burst out laughing when I imagined Vince's face when it happened.

    ReplyDelete
  93. After re-watching Backlash 2007 recently and its incredible 4 way match, I wish we would have been able to see Rollins vs. Brock vs. Bryan vs. Reigns or something similar but at least getting great interactions between the top flight guys in a single match.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It was cool because WWF made most of their heels look soft and cowardly most of the time. Making heels look like dominant bad asses that you want to hate was very NWA-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Yours was better. I concede.

I think we both were thinking along the lines of Vince not ejaculating at all though.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The Nexus beatdown was like that but Cena never sold it. At least come out the next week with a limp, you fucking joke of a top babyface.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Undertaker wore a goofy mask for half a year and Cena couldn't even limp to the ring for a week.

    ReplyDelete
  98. At one point I read that management simply forgot to book ahead to Wargames that year. I just assumed that with all the creative changes backstage it slipped by them

    ReplyDelete
  99. I really hate the guy. Some people here give him a pass for his in-ring work but everything I hate about wrestling and what it's become is mostly on him.

    ReplyDelete
  100. He's the face of one of the least inspired periods ever, and he's been that way for a decade. Not hard to see why.

    ReplyDelete
  101. But hey, it's worth it to sell a few t-shirts. Because that's what wrestling is all about. T-shirts.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Meltzer said Vince is writing Roman's promos. Makes senese.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Vince is ruined for me forever now after HartAttack's comment about Vince and premature ejaculation.

    ReplyDelete
  104. That story doesn't make sense. I can't imagine Marty Jannetty refusing anyone's sloppy seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Same. Wrestling has never been quite the same for me since about late 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Wait, what? Oh god, I'm almost afraid to ask, but what comment?

    ReplyDelete
  107. No pass given here. He's failed to evolve or do anything interesting since 2006. His in-ring work is overrated, too.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Redman was my dude. Still listen to the Muddy Waters album to this day.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Why don't they let Reigns do his own material and let him sink or swim?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think I figured out why the WWE app won't work on my tablet and it's because I don't have GPS on it and the app requires it for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  111. No, Triple H is a guy so insecure that he has WWE demand that video game magazines not show his video game character being put in vulnerable positions.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Because if a guy can't get over via wwe's efforts, then whatever crowd reaction these guys are getting is completely worthless to them.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The show was still doing 2.0 to 2.5 ratings in this period. Somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  114. There was an episode where Cena basically said that 90% of the audience is children.

    Which is false.

On Raw he's going to joke about pushing people into pools and how funny it is.

    ReplyDelete

  120. Not even a little bit, when you hire people you can see the stark difference between people of any age over say, say, 27 or 28, and those below.

Almost everyone over is willing to work, almost everyone below has a weird feeling that things should be handed to them. I hire kids coming out of college that don't understand why I won't buy them a new desk, chair, and computer so they can "start their career" it's fucking absurd.

It's not their fault, this is just the result of any culture having years of plenty.

So, I'm watching Royal Rumble 2001.... and I paused the PS4 stream accidentally, which made me look at the poster for RR01. And something looked a bit off.

Yup... they replaced Chris Benoit on the poster with what LOOKS like Farooq, or maybe it's just a generic character, but I thought of Farooq because Benoit was standing next to Bradshaw.

I was amazed that they left Benoit in the last episode of MNW. They didn't focus on him of course, but they left him in some shots and didn't edit JR saying "...and Chris Benoit" from the RAW they showed up at.

Very surprising, considering they leave off match markers for ROYAL RUMBLES that he's in. Not even just the 2004 match he won, but others, too.

    ReplyDelete
  134. For some reason Malenko matches are delisted, too.

    ReplyDelete
  135. That's odd, in an older episode I saw they did a pretty spectacular job of editing around him, if you didn't know he was there it wouldn't have even looked odd.

    ReplyDelete
  136. He was standing in the space between Angle and Austin.

Or the nights after Wrestlemania 27 and 28, where they felt the need to give his matches with Taker video packages with other wrestlers commenting on how great it was.

Triple H is he most insecure wrestler in history.

  149. I was surprised too. I wondered how they were going to talk about the Radicalz, I'm so glad they didn't leave them out of MNW history. It's a shame that Benoit will never get his due, because him being the WCW champion (never beaten) and jumping to the WWF was HUGE. I understand why he won't ever get it, but it's still sad.

  150. They even have the PERFECT way to do it. Have him join the Authority as the face of the company. Use the real life shit and throw it down people's throats.. It's worked before.

I'm not sure I ever watched this Benoit-Jericho ladder match before. That chair shot Jericho gave Benoit out of the tope looked nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  152. It's amazing, and yeah that chair shot right there is horrific in hindsight.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I still think the Liontamer over the top of the ladder is a more awful spot, that had to break bones.

  154. Mountie won by 20 votes. If someone voted multiple times, say, should they now feel very proud or very guilty? I is asking for a friend!

  155. I think its a huge deal in that it further illustrated how far VKM's fingers are from the pulse of his audience.

I mean, they should probably wonder what they're doing with their life, if getting the Mountie into the second round was THAT important.

I can't wait to sue WWE over that! I could use a win, and going up against the WWE legal department should be pretty much a squash match.

So, the other night, I had drinks with one of my former minions, a highly attractive chick in her mid-20s. She was telling me about her New Year's Eve, which involved a former New York City Council Member texting her, her inviting him to come out and then the Councilman being upset and whiny when he saw that the chick's boyfriend was there.

The former minion is 3-4 years older than the Councilman's daughter. Also, the Councilman texts the former minion to come over and hang out in his Batcave.

I'm considering how useful this information is and how it best should be used.

Apologies if it read that I thought Punk and Bryan werent over with all crowds, what I meant was that they were pushed as the cool alternate face to keep non-Cena fans interested in the product. With slight gaps, I draw a line from Edge-Punk-Bryan-Ambrose to illustrate the WWE consistently giving the non-Cena fanbase a carrot to keep tuning in.

Going back to my original point, I don't think Bryan is pushed as hard as he was going into WM XXX with Punk still active on the roster because he would be the 5th top face on the show behind Cena, Taker, Punk, and Batista.

To be fair, if I was his age and had a hot piece of ass like my former minion willing to hang out with me, I'd probably decide to hit on her, too. It's a bit pervy, yes, but I completely understand it!

  185. How did it start? A few jokes from commenters, someone caught on to the insistence of the spammer/voter, or someone decided to voted based on headgear and everyone else agreed?
