This is a pretty boss set of matchups, actually. No place for the likes of Marty Jannetty or The Mountie, of course. Frankly anyone who voted for them was objectively a bad person. Also, an online poll is a legally binding document here in Canada, so Mountie will be locked up and probably getting shanked with a sharpened tooth brush by tomorrow.
http://challonge.com/bodic#_=_
My picks:
ReplyDelete-Bret (a tough choice)
-Razor (another tough one)
-Savage (of the two, he was a much better IC champ)
-Warrior (who squashes Honk like a bug)
So since polls are legally binding documents in Canada, does that mean that The Mountie is better than Ric Flair and Pedro Morales in Canada?
ReplyDeleteWell, historically speaking, he IS better than Hogan. He beat him in Quebec during Hogan's WCW heyday.
ReplyDeleteI'm voting in the rest of this poll under duress and protest. This will be forever known as The Great BoD Screw Job. Hopefully Raymond Rogeau stays away from high places.
ReplyDeleteHennig/Hart and Razor/Jericho are too close to call. Warrior/HTM is also kind of tough, because they represent the pinnacle of face and heel IC champions. The only match that's easy to call is Randy Savage.
ReplyDeleteHas Savage and Austin ever been in a match together?
ReplyDeleteperfect, ramon, htm, savage
ReplyDelete#HONKYMANIA
ReplyDeleteHonky Tonk Man gets his long-awaited revenge! OK, maybe not.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, The Bad Guy FTW or GTFO
Yup, in WCW
ReplyDeleteI think Austin mentioned a throwaway match in wcw.
ReplyDelete7 of these guys would actually be worthy winners. The only weird one who I think would not be justified is Austin. Honestly I have no clue who would win this.
ReplyDeletejust looked it up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNM4fqSp2BY
ReplyDeleteMy vote will probably be in vain, but I cast it Perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI think Jannetty should in the WWE Hall of Fame, thank you very much. On a side note, I find it interesting that both he and Shawn use their middle names, much like James Paul McCartney and Laura Reese Witherspoon. I suppose Fred and Mike as the Rockers wouldn't have worked as well.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I voted for: Bret, Ramon, Austin, and Honky - four of my favorite IC champs of all time. I'm hoping Bret runs the table and wins the trophy Scott's been preparing.
Chris Jericho 1. Honky Tonk Man 1A
ReplyDeleteThis time it's different for the Honky Tonk Man. With the advantage of being able to study Warrior tape for hours and work with Jimmy Hart on an extensive counter-moveset...
ReplyDeleteI predict Honky loses in TEN seconds this time.
Savage vs Austin? I don't know who to vote for.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you suppose is Jacques Rougeau's bigger career accomplishment. The Mountiemania that ran wild on the blog or his actual IC title win?
ReplyDeletewow, HTM is a beast. His strategy of "Let the babyface be counted out while he beats the crap out of Jimmy" has worked really well. Too bad Warrior is going to sqash him.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, Bret has always beat Mr. Perfect after winning the IC title from him. On the other hand, Perfect always beat Bret before losing at SummerSlam. I say Perfect tells Heenan to sit aside and foolishly rehires the Coach (no not him, the old white guy) and loses yet again.
The first 4 time champ vs. the first 9 time champ. I'm going with Razor. And why isn't this a ladder match?!
Austin/Savage when both guys were IC champ wouldn't work. Savage isn't eating a Stunner in 2 minutes and Autsin's too injured to put on a **** match. After 25 minutes of stalling (Savage runs behind Liz, Austin flips him off, Savage acts like he's getting into the ring but doesn't, lather rinse repeat) Austin says fuck this tournament he has a bigger one to win (Greatest WWF Champion :hint: :hint:) and walks out. Savage wins via countout. As Savage celebrates, Austin comes out and stuns him because Austin's a dick.
Neither man. His tenure as a Quebecers/Amazing French Canandian trumps everthing else. Including his silly win over Hulk.
ReplyDeleteDidn't say biggest...just bigger.
ReplyDeleteWell then it's too close to call.
ReplyDeleteDoes Honky have Sherri Peggy Sue with him? Because she does have a history of successfully distracting the Warrior. Just saying...
ReplyDeleteBret vs Sa-vage clap clap clapclapclap
ReplyDeletewhat you said.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Savage over Austin, but I'd love to have seen Austin/Warrior. Warrior would run to the ring and right into a Kick Wham Stunner, No Sell, Rope Shake, Kick Wham Stunner, No Sell Rope Shake, Kick Wham Stunner, No Sell Rope Shake, etc. Would Austin suffer from sort of spinal paralysis before Warrior finally sold the stunner/pass out from exhaustion?
ReplyDeleteSorry Austin, gotta go with Savage on this one
ReplyDeleteWent with Jericho over razor... That was tough. Jericho might be my favorite all time and he had some great IC title matches. Razors body of work is just so much smaller.
ReplyDeleteGoing Razor all the way on this because he was awesome + the IC belt seemed nearly as important as the world title whenever he had it.
ReplyDeleteI know it happened at a WWF show in Japan (of all places), but I've never seen it and assume it would be better than every match I've ever seen in my entire life
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Well when Sherri ran interference for Savage, most of the time Savage would blindside Warrior with a legal attack. HTM's most effective move would be the guitar shot, which means Jimmy would have to have the ref tied up. And if the ref was that no good Joey Marella (rip) he might dq Honky based on the guitar bits laying in the ring.
ReplyDeleteNew Generation Razor Ramon vs sniveling Best in the World at What I Do Jericho would be *****
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Rock vs. Warrior wasn't closer, Rock was a made man after his IC run.
ReplyDeleteFuck I'd pay money to watch this tournament.
ReplyDeleteWarrior is the only person in history to win the main event of WM while being IC champ. Thats probably the reason.
ReplyDeleteI just cant vote in any of them. All too close.
ReplyDeleteAustin deserves a lot of credit as IC champ for doing that horrible rollup to Owen 2 minutes after his neck was broken.
ReplyDeleteLook for Honky Tonk Man to finally get his revenge on Warrior.
ReplyDeleteCheck this one out:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFUD2SdWyE8
And here's the only video of the Japan match I could find. It's a video camera in the audience. I don't think the match was filmed. There aren't any cameramen in the video, just photographers:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKL_CYbl7bE
Wow that is so nice of you. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just don't know which way to swing with Savage vs. Austin.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Austin because I envisioned Austin in his Attitude Era prime vs a broken down bloated Savage with the Ho Posse. Austin would have beaten him. Then Savage probably would have beaten Stunning Steve Austin.
So I went back and voted Savage.
I will always vote for a Honky over anyone else. Does that sound racist?
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie already served time in an NYC jail. We have laws prohibiting double jeopardy here!
ReplyDeleteSavage *did* beat Stunning Steve Austin on an episode of WCW Saturday night, I believe.
ReplyDeleteAnd despite the having of fun early in the tourney, we come to a bracket that was all but guaranteed all along.
ReplyDeleteThe WWE booking committee should learn from this.
ReplyDeleteI think my affair with Five guys Burgers and fries has.... Worn Off.
ReplyDeleteDoes it make me racist that i can't get into non American wrestling ?
ReplyDeleteHoly SHIT what a match! Thanks for sharing. Is that the same one included on the new Macho DVD? Damn, that was a fight-and-a-half! It really served as a template of sorts for Hitman's matches a few years later as a face; fighting through an insurmountable injury, a creative, surprise finish, etc.
ReplyDeleteKick. Ass!
No. I'm the same way
ReplyDeleteI mean don't get me wrong i watched that New Japan show on Axes and i think Tanahashi's a great worker i just couldn't get myself invested in it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so. I can appreciate some of the Japanese stuff on a certain level but could never really care much about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd lucha can just fuck right off. Absolute garbage.
You would pay money to watch Ric Flair job to The Mountie?
ReplyDeleteExactly the same here - and after all the funny stuff that was more or less the right list apart from I think Steamboat should have been in the final 8 rather than Austin.
ReplyDeleteFascinating, we're going to end up with Perfect/Ramon and Warrior/Savage. Both repeats with probably different victors =)
ReplyDeleteDone. I mean that and not even in an ironic way. That would be hysterical!
ReplyDeleteTotally agreed. Scott probably was rooting for Orton/Batista last year too!!
ReplyDeleteEspecially if he got shocked afterwards
ReplyDeleteNo Mountie = No Buys
ReplyDeleteI love Austin, but he really stands out among this group if we're talking strictly about great Intercontinental champs.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see Scott was on my side for that whole Mountie debacle.
ReplyDeleteAustin's gotten here on name value alone. His IC title reigns were basically "break neck, win, vacate" and "win and vacate next night" He's outclassed here amongst these legendary IC champs.
ReplyDeleteNot at all. You will never ever, ever, ever, ever see the Japanese wrestlers or the Mexican wrestlers over in American mainstream wrestling. I'm an American. If I'm watching wrestling here in America, I don't give a shit about a Japanese guy. I don't give a shit about a Mexican guy. I'm from America, and that's what I want to see.
ReplyDeleteSame here. He didn't get the world title, same with Razor, so it's more 'his belt' than Bret's.
ReplyDeleteSo, just to confirm, you're American?
ReplyDeleteMountiemania! And as someone said: I wish he knew about it.
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie should come out after the final match and shock the winner.
ReplyDeleteIf only there was an IC MITB that he could use at the same time. SWERVE~!
Vince Russo ? Is that you ?
ReplyDelete'MURICA!
ReplyDeleteWe need video games to determine the outcome of these matches. To Fire Pro we go!
ReplyDeleteThe second one was the Steamboat-Flair of title vacations though.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn between Ramon and Savage to win. Ramon because almost his entire WWF career was based around the IC Title. He made that title matter. And Savage because... shit, it's Savage.
ReplyDeleteJericho's had a bigger career, but Ramon carried that gold like it meant something. It wasn't a stepping stone, it was his stone.
ReplyDeleteI'd have marked out if both refused to lose and had to go to a 30 minute time limit draw. Just to see Warrior blown up as fuck and Austin running out of ideas like he did versus Jericho.
ReplyDeleteI don't disagree, I just thought it would be closer.
ReplyDeleteThere is a place for the Mountie and Marty Jannetty! I tended to vote more for IC Champs whose championship was the Apex of their career more than the ones that were just taking a step up the championship ladder. I think of the Rock, Steve Austin, HHH and others as World Champions, not IC champs and voted that way.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that three of these participants are dead.
ReplyDeleteHBK should be in there.
ReplyDeleteTry Hardee's.
ReplyDeleteDID YOU KNOW?
ReplyDeleteAll of these matches actually happened?
Yeah, the Bloom comes off that rose pretty quickly.
ReplyDeleteEven then broken down Ric Flair that was ic champion would have beaten the Mountie.
ReplyDeleteJericho was the #1 ic champion on last week's countdown, so really that's all the justification you need to vote for him.
ReplyDeleteWatch the match they did on SNME. that was THE TITS.
ReplyDeleteTHAT That would actually be worse you know.
ReplyDeleteI associate the IC more with Perfect as well, even though Bret is my favorite. Gotta think in terms of IC title reigns, not overall career.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the IC title, Savage is a far superior choice. Austin only held it for a short time and was practically crippled most of the time he had it.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall a Jericho/Hall match. Was this in WCW or 2002 WWF?
ReplyDeleteWCW. Jericho won via a flukey roll-up and then Hall beat the piss out of him after the match. I can't recall if he got the win back later though.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy some Japanese wrestling but I agree about lucha. Just looks too choreographed for me.
ReplyDeleteWhen was Savage/Austin?
ReplyDeleteHe definitely got the most screwed by the vote-spamming. Might have won the whole thing if Scott had IP locked things one round earlier.
ReplyDeleteIn wcw in a us title tourney; see my link posted in this thread
ReplyDeleteJericho always comes back home to the IC title though. He's held it at almost ever stage of his WWE career (present return excluded)
ReplyDeleteThanks again, spent my night eating Thai food and watching those!
ReplyDeleteGreatest IC champ of all time, as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget William Bradley Pitt.
ReplyDelete
