Lots of interesting matches this round, including the BATTLE OF CONDITIONER~! between Edge and Diesel. Hopefully nothing to inspire the ballot-stuffers to try it again.
Benoit is one of those guys who I just associate closely with the IC title like Perfect or Razor. Like when I think of Benoit, I think of IC champ Benoit.
To be fair, what happened with the Mountie/Pedro match was an army of Mountie supporters versus an army of Pedro supporters who practically cancelled each other out.
I voted Goldie just because I think he was a great IC champ and I remember all of his title feuds. Other than the Jericho ladder match (which rules), I don't remember a lot of what Benoit did with the belt.
This reminds me of Bret's story in Wrestling With Shadows, I believe where Stu would get Bret in a choke hold and tell him he breathed his last breath and Bret totally believed that his father would go too far.
I agree. The Mountie - who beat Bret Hart without breaking a sweat - easily dispatches of old, wrinkly Ric Flair who could barely get a good match out of Carlito.
I think Goldust deserves the win here and not because of the murders. He had a number of hot feuds over the belt and was a very high profile wrestler for a short time. Benoit incision got it done in the ring, but I feel Goldust did more with the belt.
Likewise. I mostly remember Benoit as being a perennial title contender, such as the time he was being managed by Shane McMahon. Whereas Goldust and his feuds with Ahmed and Razor were the very definition of mid-card title classics.
I honestly remember him more for going after the world title (with Shane managing him) and then later for his match against Angle at the Royal Rumble, and other such classic, WWE/World title angles. Not so much the IC belt.
Well, there was a Survivor Series were Tito tried to sunset flip Andre... only to have the big guy sit down and score the pin. Tito did better against Akeem, defeating him in the IC Tournament in the spring of 1990.
Jericho is sooooo overrated as an IC champion. Won it and lost in the same night. Lost it one time after a week. The most he ever did with that belt was trying to revive it in 2009 and even then he lost it after three weeks.
I don't think Jericho is one of the greatest IC champs like Perfect, Bret, Shawn, Savage, etc... but I do think he should beat Davey Boy. I remember Y2J doing some good stuff with it. Ladder matches with Benoit and Christian. The feud with Rey. His matches with RVD. I'm a big Bulldog fan but other than the win over Bret and the loss to hbk, I can't think of anything he did.
"I got off a jet in Richmond, Virginia. They handed me an umbrella. Lightning hit my umbrella. It killed a guy three feet from me. Dead – right in the eye – dead. You think I’m afraid of you" - Ric Flair.
I was shocked when they gave the strap to Eddie so soon after RVD finally got to win it. They had a series of great matches though from Backlash through the Raw ladder match.
Well to be the man, you have to beat the man. The Mountie ALWAYS gets his man. And I've always thought the key to beating the man was getting the man. Therefore, The Mountie will beat the man after getting his man, and therefore be the man.
Sorry Pat but I gotta give it to Eddie, who was also the best European champ and those are important credentials.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the point in voting when someone will get a wild hair up their ass and spam votes!
ReplyDeleteYour vote matters! So vote or die!
ReplyDeleteMero was a sneaky good IC champ but I had to vote for Razor. Goldust over Benoit was another tough choice.
ReplyDeleteI see the Goldust/Benoit being a really close match considering how many people will automatically vote against Benoit because of real life stuff.
ReplyDeleteBig Show was IC Champion?
ReplyDeleteWM28.
ReplyDeleteTo have to choose between Patterson and Guerrero was just cruel.
ReplyDeleteMero's IC title reign sucked, but I think it had potential to be good if WWF had more faith in the guy.
ReplyDeleteBenoit is one of those guys who I just associate closely with the IC title like Perfect or Razor. Like when I think of Benoit, I think of IC champ Benoit.
ReplyDeletefighting cody rhodes
ReplyDeleteVoted for Diesel. It's all about the magnificent hair.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, what happened with the Mountie/Pedro match was an army of Mountie supporters versus an army of Pedro supporters who practically cancelled each other out.
ReplyDeleteBut not enough for the Mountie to win regardless!
How can Pat not win this? He won it in a very legendary fashion.
ReplyDeleteEveryone raves about his final match in the tournament but I always felt the semi final match was far more brutal and awesome.
ReplyDeletePleasantly surprised that my pick Jericho is ahead of the Bulldog
ReplyDeleteThrowing my support behind Dashing Cody Rhodes (handsome,) Eddie Guerrero (brave) and Razor Ramon (strong.)
ReplyDeleteHuh. Tito Santana versus Big Show would be a fun match.
ReplyDeleteI was seriously torn on that one. I voted Edge just 'cause Diesel's IC reign isn't particularly memorable, but I'm a big ol' Diesel nerd.
ReplyDeleteThat was a travesty. Cody was a good champ but show killed his push.
ReplyDeleteI was torn too, but went with Diesel because I figured he'd be the underdog, so it surprised me he's winning so far.
ReplyDeleteI like what you've done there.
ReplyDeleteThankfully he had never done that before and hasn't since.
ReplyDeleteWait...
I voted Goldie just because I think he was a great IC champ and I remember all of his title feuds. Other than the Jericho ladder match (which rules), I don't remember a lot of what Benoit did with the belt.
ReplyDeleteDamn, Shawn Michaels won.
ReplyDeleteLos Matadores is sadder, but AJ is way hot so it cancels out.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I was super into Mero's IC title run just because of 1. Sable and 2. The Wild Thing finishing move.
ReplyDeleteI would like to watch all four of these matches.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I hate that. I only vote once each time and find it annoying that people can vote multiple times.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of Bret's story in Wrestling With Shadows, I believe where Stu would get Bret in a choke hold and tell him he breathed his last breath and Bret totally believed that his father would go too far.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The Mountie - who beat Bret Hart without breaking a sweat - easily dispatches of old, wrinkly Ric Flair who could barely get a good match out of Carlito.
ReplyDeleteWhen will people realise that this is SUPER SERIOUS and not just for fun?!?!?
ReplyDeleteGoldust was one of the greatest IC champs ever. The only belt I associate with Benoit is a weightlifting belt.
ReplyDeleteI think Goldust deserves the win here and not because of the murders. He had a number of hot feuds over the belt and was a very high profile wrestler for a short time. Benoit incision got it done in the ring, but I feel Goldust did more with the belt.
ReplyDeleteLikewise. I mostly remember Benoit as being a perennial title contender, such as the time he was being managed by Shane McMahon. Whereas Goldust and his feuds with Ahmed and Razor were the very definition of mid-card title classics.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't argue that about Goldust either, he was a damn fine champ. But Benoit is just that upper tier of IC guys to me.
ReplyDeleteI honestly remember him more for going after the world title (with Shane managing him) and then later for his match against Angle at the Royal Rumble, and other such classic, WWE/World title angles. Not so much the IC belt.
ReplyDeleteWell, there was a Survivor Series were Tito tried to sunset flip Andre... only to have the big guy sit down and score the pin. Tito did better against Akeem, defeating him in the IC Tournament in the spring of 1990.
ReplyDeleteJericho is sooooo overrated as an IC champion. Won it and lost in the same night. Lost it one time after a week. The most he ever did with that belt was trying to revive it in 2009 and even then he lost it after three weeks.
ReplyDeleteAlmost 7500 votes!!! Holy shit go Jacques
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time believing Pat Patterson ever finished where it involved a woman.
ReplyDelete...poor Marc Mero.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think we can Mountie past flair.
ReplyDeleteI think Santana has a chance to go pretty far in this one. I love his title run and his feuds with Valentine and Savage are classic.
ReplyDeleteWho said he hugged and collapsed on a woman?
ReplyDeleteI don't think Jericho is one of the greatest IC champs like Perfect, Bret, Shawn, Savage, etc... but I do think he should beat Davey Boy. I remember Y2J doing some good stuff with it. Ladder matches with Benoit and Christian. The feud with Rey. His matches with RVD. I'm a big Bulldog fan but other than the win over Bret and the loss to hbk, I can't think of anything he did.
ReplyDeleteDamn right he did!
ReplyDeleteeasily. would win the match with the shockstick. mountie is waaaay more important to that title than flair.
ReplyDeleteI can't vote for someone who was that bad in the ring. 1996 Goldust is one of the worst wrestlers of all time.
ReplyDeleteOh god I gotta pick between pat and Eddie g?
ReplyDeleteHow come, whomever I vote for, it comes up saying "Your vote has been cast for ROMAN REIGNS"?
ReplyDeleteYou've got a choice between the stiff, and... well... you see where I'm going here.
ReplyDeleteThe Blog is running on Mountie Power.
ReplyDeleteBOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is not a commentary of CM Punk's IC reign vis a vis Shawn's. I just don't like that piggish, Bible-humping fraud.
Bret Hart has The Mountie at #2 on his all-time list. Over 1,000 places higher than HHH!
ReplyDeleteMountiemania running wild! Be brave, be handsome, be strong and enforce the law!
ReplyDeletewe're gonna look back at this and say 'remember when mountie ruled the world'
ReplyDeleteOh that's just the WWE.com verison of the tournament.
ReplyDeleteSome of you all have too much time on your hands.
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, I remember a match on Prime Time wherein Akeem defeated Bret Hart... by sitting on him after a failed sunset flip.
ReplyDeleteWe lost Pedro...but I'll be damned if I'm losing Tito!
ReplyDeleteARRIBA!
Tito > Pedro.
ReplyDeleteYou think Flair fears a fucking shock stick??
ReplyDelete"I got off a jet in Richmond, Virginia. They handed me an umbrella. Lightning hit my umbrella. It killed a guy three feet from me. Dead – right in the eye – dead. You think I’m afraid of you" - Ric Flair.
The bravest there is, the handsomest there was, and the strongest there ever will be.
ReplyDeleteEvery match Patterson had in that tournament was as awesome as any other. I still have my ticket stub.
ReplyDeleteI still wanna know how Steamboat came back like an Iron Man match.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked when they gave the strap to Eddie so soon after RVD finally got to win it. They had a series of great matches though from Backlash through the Raw ladder match.
ReplyDeleteLMAO @ Tito beating the Big Show.
ReplyDeleteAnd after that, a potential matchup with Bret Hart. That should go to the Mountie as well, because he BEAT Bret Hart to win the titlle.
ReplyDeleteMountie to the Elite 8!
We know.
ReplyDeleteRandy was cheated.
ReplyDeleteShawn was the exact opposite as IC Champ.
ReplyDeleteWhen asked for a comment, Jacques replied, "I YAM DA MOUNTIE!"
ReplyDeleteNo worries here, as that was Bret's feelings. Flair used to throw good chops until he started doing them more as a slap.
ReplyDeleteWell to be the man, you have to beat the man. The Mountie ALWAYS gets his man. And I've always thought the key to beating the man was getting the man. Therefore, The Mountie will beat the man after getting his man, and therefore be the man.
ReplyDeleteAbsurd. Mountie? Absurd.
ReplyDeleteto rephrase a great Bart Simpson line, "The dead have risen and they're voting for The Mountie!"
