Jesus, I thought that Rock-Zeke would be the biggest mismatch, but poor Big E only managed 13 (!!!) votes against Rick Rude. Now that’s an asskicking.
On with round two, four brackets per day this time.

Ric Flair is neither strong nor brave, and certainly not as handsome as the Mountie.
ReplyDeleteI guess I never really remembered Shawn as the IC Champ. I always had him in the upper card in my mind.
ReplyDeleteDon't even need memes and avatars for The Mountie this round. He was a legit better IC champ than Flair.
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Mountie is less likely to pawn the IC title.
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty much his and Hall's division from late '92 - '95.
ReplyDeleteHow the fuck did Austin beat Jarrett by around 500 votes?
ReplyDeleteIn 92, it was the Mountie's division :)
ReplyDeleteI saw Perfect v Regal, and my initial instinct was to pick the "legend"... but then I stopped. I don't even remember Regal's IC title reign, when I compare the two in my mind, I feel that Regal is just a little better than Perfect.
ReplyDeleteAustin needs to be taken out. He's the only odd one out in this thing.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember Valentine's reign but it was a good one? I don't remember Bret having a really great reign as much as him having great matches to win/lose the belt. Not that it matters, this is Mountie country.
ReplyDeleteIt was before my time, but I've seen a few classic Valentine/Santana matches so I presume Valentine had a good run with the belt. Still picked the Hitman though.
ReplyDeleteThe Miz beat Ken Patera? Oh, that is just wrong, so wrong. Patera would have picked up a boulder and dropped it on Miz, and then beat up the 14 cops sent to subdue him.
ReplyDeleteOther than winning/losing the belt, it's hard to think of any great matches for anyone: Rude, Warrior, Perfect, Shawn, everyone. I saw a good Bret/Shawn match at a house show in '92. But otherwise his defenses were against the likes of Skinner, Berzerker, and other midcard losers. But those title change matches against Perfect, Piper, and Davey beats out everyone else's IC Title matches in my opinion
ReplyDeleteYeah, I mean. I know that side of things. But I think I did what a lot of people did. Maybe not everyone here. And went from Hogan/Warrior child hero worship, to not caring about wrestling to the Attitude Era. I got back in for the Shawn/Bret/Austin/NWO stuff. Then took a break after Twenty, and came back for Punk and...sad to admit this...Ryder's youtube videos. DBry and the Shield were a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteNo idea what the hell I'm doing now, but I do really like NXT.
When Flair won the title, it stopped becoming a belt and became a bra to hold his moobs up.
ReplyDeleteAll Mountie, all the time
ReplyDeleteAnd the Mountie enforces the law, which will help when Flair runs into financial troubles again
ReplyDeleteLess to do with Austin, more to do with Jerret
ReplyDeleteWhat else constitutes a great reign other than great matches?
ReplyDeleteJarrett was a great IC champ
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Patera's reign, but I know Miz' one sucked and even Miz' own mother wouldn't have voted for him.
ReplyDeleteFlair, Bret, Perfect, Michaels.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise known as the greatest in-ring performers ever.
Psych, I voted for the Mountie.
Longevity? Kayfabe dominance?
ReplyDeleteThat's why HTM has a shot
It's gonna be Mountie vs Warrior to end it all.
ReplyDeleteEnforcing the law. Not just in your own country, but in other countries as well and ensuring justice is served all over the world cattle prod style!
ReplyDeleteNo other IC champion used their IC title fame to secure a country music deal.
ReplyDeleteValentine had a great reign. His series against Santana helped bring prestige to the title.
ReplyDeleteMountie v Marty in the finals, brah.
ReplyDeleteBret's first reign as IC champ was amazing. He wrestled on every TV show and even though he wrestled stiffs like Skinner, Berzerker, Warlord, Haku, Barbarian, etc, they were all good to great matches unlike anything I had ever seen as a young fan who was just starting to appreciate workrate. He was a take-on-all-comers fighting champion and my choice for best IC champ ever (him or Perfect) because he made the title seem so important (even the simple kiss before giving it to the ref was awesome).
ReplyDeleteI just don't remember him doing anything memorable in between winning/losing the title. It's probably more due to the era where he didn't have a pay per view defense every month and mostly faced jobbers and Skinner.
ReplyDeleteYou don't wanna over do it.
ReplyDeleteOh right, good call. I take it back he did have more meaningless/good defenses than I rembered.
ReplyDeleteBret/Piper is a top 5 IC title angle.
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't for the Mountie that angle never would have happened.
ReplyDeleteHe was the glue that held it together!
ReplyDeleteExactly. Viva La Mountie!
ReplyDeleteI've got Mountie vs. Pat Patterson for the finals
ReplyDeletePat loves a man in uniform.
ReplyDeleteLike that's going to draw website hits.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know who Ken Petera is/was
ReplyDeleteAnd Ive learned the names of a lot of obscure wrestlers in my time at the BoD
What does his dad think? That's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking ahead at the bracket to see who The Mountie might face next. I see Bret Hart and I'm like, nigga please
ReplyDeletehttp://i.ytimg.com/vi/PJPu5sErmLw/hqdefault.jpg
Ken Patera was 2015 Kurt Angle.
ReplyDeleteI only remember Petera as a jobber, but still, I can't vote for a guy that doesn't know how to apply the figure four.
ReplyDeleteThis goes out to White Thunder or anyone else thinking about voting for Flair: Vote Mountie or else.
ReplyDeletehttp://wrestlingrecaps.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/fallbrawl97.jpg
All I need is Mongo counting the votes and this threat will work.
ReplyDeletejust know that he is insane and full of it.
ReplyDeleteGood points. I forgot a lot of those matches. Actually never saw his match against Haku.
ReplyDeleteStu Hart v Haku in a shoot fight would have been pretty epic.
ReplyDeleteMy first exposure to Ken Patera was the sitdown interview he gave to announce his comeback after he got out of jail. He looked like a broken man.
ReplyDeleteShawn vs Bret easily the final of these 8.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Jacques is 2-0 against the Hitman. He also beat him at the 94 Royal Rumble.
ReplyDeleteThere were a lot. Repo man, IRS, dibiase, Mountie...
ReplyDeleteWho actually voted for fucking Big E over Rick Rude? 13 of you stiffs need to go choke yourselves. With both hands
ReplyDeleteI didn't vote for The Mountie.
ReplyDelete..
AS IF!
Whooooooooo
ReplyDeletePlus mountie's team beat Bret's at survivor series '91 when flair was sole survivor.
ReplyDeleteI remember Repo, IRS, and Dibiase but don't remember any defenses against Earthquake or Typhoon. They really need to start uploading Superstars and Wrestling Challenge onto the Network for matches like these.
ReplyDeleteMiz at least had decent feuds with Bryan and Morrison during his reign. Still voted for Patera
ReplyDeleteI think that was for the US title. Miz feuded with Wade for the IC title.
ReplyDeleteTotally voted the Mountie.
ReplyDeleteIt appears we can vote more than once again. CHA-CHING!
ReplyDeleteQuebec Province Rules ensures that the Mountie gets his man!
ReplyDeleteMountie was actually sole survivor.
ReplyDeleteIt took Flair to get me to vote for the Mountie.
ReplyDeleteBut none of his IC matches were as good as the two matches wherein Bret won the title.
ReplyDeleteI voted Flair because of his one ****1/2 title defense against Triple H in the cage match.
ReplyDeleteThere's the two ladder matches with Razor, the Jannetty match on Raw, and the Jarrett match (which I think is way overrated but it's still solid). I'll take Bret's title wins and loss to the Bulldog over them, but not by much.
ReplyDeletePatera was one of the world's strongest weightlifters in the late '60s & early '70s, competing at the '72 Olympics, where an injury kept him from probably medaling. He then went into pro wrestling and had a fair bit of success in the late '70s and early '80s, particularly with the AWA, though he also competed with the WWF (where he won the IC title in the early '80s), among others. He also became a pretty decent worker during this time.
ReplyDeleteIn the mid '80s, after a night at the matches, the hungry Patera went to a McDonalds, where they were closing, and they wouldn't even let him take the burgers they were throwing out. He got pissed off, picked up a boulder from their rock garden, and promptly threw it through their front window. To top it off, he beat up a bunch of cops that were sent to subdue him. This got him two years in jail.
Needless to say, MIz would be little more than an oily spot on the ring mat if he actually got in the ring with Patera. The strongman was the real deal.
You're insane. Bret/Perfect was **** at SummerSlam. Bret/Piper was **** at Mania 8.
ReplyDeleteFlair's 00's run was actually tremendous. He physically looked terrible but he was still a damn ring general and could do 75% of the stuff he normally did.
ReplyDeleteI approve this comment.
ReplyDeleteMaybe *** 1/2 let's not get crazy because someone bled heavily.
ReplyDeleteI voted Flair but certainly I understand he is not a notable IC Champion.
ReplyDeleteThe Blog really does despise Mysterio these days if Triple H beat him. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI loved the old school action.
ReplyDeleteRegal beat Edge at the 2002 Rumble for the strap before losing it to RVD at WM. He then later beat Santino for it in 40 seconds. Not bad, but as specifically IC CHAMP I have to give the nod to a Regal.
ReplyDeleteWhomever makes out of this half is just fodder for the Jannetic Jackhammer in the finals.
ReplyDeleteSteve Austin is a curious case in this tourney. He isn't a notable IC champion at all, but he was the hottest thing ever in wrestling when he had the belt so I'm not sure how to proceed.
ReplyDeleteRemember when wrestling use to be good? http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view/1018390/mountie-o.gif
ReplyDeleteDo it for The Rock!
ReplyDeleteI don't even remember Mysterio as IC champ.
ReplyDeleteIf you want workrate, Mountie and Bret had a ***** classic where Mountie won the title.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, Triple H's run with the belt was important to his development and never ending push.
ReplyDeleteVoted for Flair. But I could see 06 Flair partying too much before this match and doing a Flair flop just as the bell rings. Mountie and Jimmy would debate on if they should shock him anyway for 10 seconds before simply rolling Flair over and pinning him.
ReplyDeleteSavage has an easy rout to the semi finals.
ReplyDeleteI voted HHH if only for his IC feud with Rock.
ReplyDeleteElevating the title to something important.
ReplyDeleteUltimate Warrior didn't have great matches as IC Champ...he may have set an IC Champ record for negative star matches...but he made the IC Championship match worthy of headlining Wrestlemania.
I can respect that.
ReplyDeleteHe won the title at Wrestlemania!
ReplyDeleteI'm just voting for the wrestler I like better.
ReplyDeleteBut HHH was never the IC champion during that feud, Rock was. As soon as H3 won the belt, he had to drop it.
ReplyDeleteWrestling was never good. Every generation says the one before it was better.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. Well, still worth it for the Two Man Power Trip.
ReplyDeleteThink you must have missed Marty being in the tournament too.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget the "lost" ladder match where bret beat hbk. Solid ***1/2
ReplyDeleteOh right, from JBL. I do remember now.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a fun little way to retire JBL, actually.
Austin was hot in late 97 but he wasn't nWo/Sting hot.
ReplyDeleteWhen Ric Flair won the IC Title he was so old he needed a shock stick to get his dick up.
ReplyDeleteWhich The Mountie will GLADLY PROVIDE.
VIVE LE MOUNTIE!!!!!
I guess, but by the very beginning of 98' Austin was the hot thing in wrestling and nWo / Sting was dead after Starrcade.
ReplyDeleteThat match is just as important and happens anyway without the IC title.
ReplyDeleteChain match vs. Kane
ReplyDeleteThey were still destroying them in the ratings after Starrcade. Raw didn't win until after WM14.
ReplyDeleteBrock should have had a chain match just so they could subtitle the PPV "Here comes the chains".
ReplyDeleteLater that night, The Mountie went to Bret's hotel room with tears in his eyes to thank him for the match....
ReplyDelete...at which point, he tasered the FUCK out of Bret because he's a heel, goddammit.
Much like a debt collector going after the Nature Boy, The Mountie ALWAYS GETS HIS MAN!
ReplyDeleteI betcha their girlfriends were pulled out of the audience to kiss Rude.
ReplyDeleteIf we had our way, we'd have Mountie vs Mountie.
ReplyDeleteI hate Miz with a firey passion, but I still voted him over Patera.
ReplyDeleteIs your argument that Austin wasn't hot in late 97 / early 98?
ReplyDeleteFor someone who is supposed to uphold the law, Mountie's supporters are sure ready to spam the vote. Also, Ken Shamrock's supporters for some reason. Or is this an anti-Shawn thing?
ReplyDeleteHE SCREWED BRET! HE SCREWED BRET! HE SCREWED BRET!
ReplyDeleteScientific reason why Mountie is better than Flair:
ReplyDeleteHulk has pinned Flair
Jacques has pinned Hogan
Mountie > Flair
Bret has beaten Flair
Mountie has beaten Bret THREE times
Mountie > Flair
EATS CRUDE BREAD! EATS CRUDE BREAD! EATS CRUDE BREAD!
ReplyDeleteShawn eats crude bread?
ReplyDeleteEwww, now I'm DEFINITELY voting for Shamrock. At least he knows the right time to throw out a loaf of bread.
I thought Shawn would easily cruise to the semis or the finals.
ReplyDeleteBuncha fat, ugly inner-city sweathogs won't keep the noise down
ReplyDeleteI thought Shawn would drop out in the middle of the tournament after losing his smile.
ReplyDeleteThey just don't want a REAL man to win this IC tournament.
ReplyDeleteJoke's on them because the realest of men, The Mountie, is winning it.
That he wasn't THE hottest.
ReplyDeleteAka: The Mountie
ReplyDeleteEven though he wouldn't even qualify, I bet The Mountie would win even a world title tournament.
ReplyDeleteWe're deputies not supporters.
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie is a 13 time World Champion.
ReplyDeleteOn which world?
ReplyDeleteSmackdown years 2005-2009. It was a crazy time, drugs were involved, we don't remember a lot, and Edge someone won 25 world titles.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely endorse your choice of avatar. Oh yeah, and this comment
ReplyDeleteRic Flair averaged a match time of 60 minutes every night he wrestled in the late 80s.
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie averaged a match time of 10 minutes every night he wrstled in the late 80s because he only needed 10 minutes to beat you.
That's.....actually a really valid argument. If I'm a guy boosting myself up as the best ever, maybe I don't want to advertise that I take an hour to beat EVERYONE I face during my prime years
ReplyDeleteBret vs. Hammer seems like it would a damn fine pro-rasslin match. Did it ever happen while Valentine was still good?
ReplyDeleteIt's okay for you to be gay!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, I see why Shamrock's beating Shawn. Because Regal is beating Mr. Perfect and we're all drooling at the idea of a technical match between Regal and Shamrock.
ReplyDeleteBest heel the WWF ever had, jack
ReplyDeleteBetter than Shawn vs Perfect. I've seen SummerSlam 93.
ReplyDeleteI think so? I seem to recall they had at least one match during Bret's first run as a singles wrestler. There'd be some overlap there where it could happen.
ReplyDeleteNot saying he should win the whole thing, but I feel the Hammer is a horribly underrated guy in this whole tourney. And in wrestling history in general
ReplyDeleteWouldn't be surprised if they squared off during the Hart Foundation-Rhythm & Blues feud.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The man was an annual iron man during the Rumble match. He just kept hanging in there. Plus, the BADASS dog collar match with Piper.
ReplyDeletethis is exactly the way i see it plus theres also a shockstick involved
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFPhNKrivpo
ReplyDeleteWell lookie what I found. AND guess who shows up near the end to GET HIS MAN?!
Bret Hart vs Greg Valentine Wrestling Challenge Nov 13th, 1988
ReplyDeletehttp://youtu.be/HFPhNKrivpo
i dont think hart would go over so easily. the hammer would be protected for sure
ReplyDeleteTremendous! Thanks dude.
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie is the Washington Generals of professional wrestling. A skid mark on the drawers of the IC title.
ReplyDeletehahaha. One of those men looks suspiciously like he should enlist in the mounted police force
ReplyDeleteCold-blooded.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I feel like he could have hung on a while longer as more of a badass who makes the IC-title level guys look good, rather than pretending to play music with Honky Tonk Man. I mean, I get that Honky's whole gimmick was that he was an elvis impersonator and may/may not actually play music. But when we look at Valentine, it's not like he's a different person. It's still the fucking HAMMER, not a musician!
ReplyDeleteI love his matches with Tito. Underrated feud.
ReplyDeleteI hated Rhythm & Blues. The idea of someone tagging with Honky under that name was fine, but I feel like they should have used an unknown rather than Greg Valentine. The Hammer was better than that
ReplyDeleteSuperior IC Champion to Bret Hart.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Scott Hall used a shock stick to give Goldberg his first loss.
ReplyDeleteThe Mountie used a shock stick before Scott Hall.
Vis a vis, The Mountie ended Goldberg's winning Streak and may or may not have been responsible for the nWo too
I think there is a valid argument to made for that, sir.
ReplyDeleteTito is another underrated mid-card great
ReplyDeleteWhen are we going to get the "Million Dollar Champion" tournament?
ReplyDeleteWhen Virgil wins the award, Scott Keith doesn't want to be scammed into buying an 8x10 autograpghed picture of Virgil Wrestling Superstar when handing him his trophy.
ReplyDeleteMy money's on the Ringmaster.
ReplyDeleteI concur.
ReplyDeleteDibiase Sr. over Dibiase Jr.
Austin squashes Virgil.
Austin over Dibiase in the epic finale to a grueling tournament
"Kings of the Ring" Tournament next? Pretty good field.
ReplyDeletePre-PPV: Muraco, Race, Haku, Savage, Dibiase, Santana, Duggan
PPV Era: Bret, Owen, Mabel, Austin, HHH, Shamrock, Gunn, Angle, Edge, Sheamus, Booker T., Regal.
what about Brock?
ReplyDeleteYep, Brock in 2002. Typo fixed. My bad.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, Haku didn't win a tournament. He was just kind of "crowned" after Harley Race. But he makes it an even number at least.
My support for the Mountie ends here. Wooo!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand it myself.
ReplyDeleteExhibit #1: http://youtu.be/riZab8Z8E_M?t=1m22s
Exhibit #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfnOG2YHJyY
I know what you're thinking. This is Ric by gawd Flair. But it's not wheeling, dealing, kiss stealing, limo riding, jet plane flying playboy you're thinking of. This isn't 80s Flair or even 90s Flair. This is saggy man boobs, Viagra chugging Flair. This is the Flair we all knew needed to be put out to pasture like a cat that's 89% mange and hair balls.
ReplyDeleteA vote for Flair here is a slap in the face to the Flair we love and a complicit endorsement of Flair now. Do the right thing. Don't vote for embarassing mid-2000s Flair,
Vote Mountie, because we have to protect Flair's legacy from himself.
There's never been a Millin Dollar Champion like...
ReplyDelete#INHALE#
Goooollllllllldust.
I wonder if Shamrock is shouting out the moves in this tourney match...
ReplyDeleteIf this were true, I would be spamming Mountie votes like crazy...
ReplyDelete
