Muraco's Monday Matches of the Week (s2,e3)

NOAH: Naomichi Marufuji (c) vs. Satoshi Kojima - [1/10/15]

The most historical match of the week right here, as first we have Satoshi Kojima challenging for the GHC World Title. The obviously pro-NOAH crowd turns on Kojima and he heels it up accordingly. Good stuff, however that's not the only thing of note in this video. The biggest news of the week is what follows, as NJPW's Suzuki-Gun invades NOAH, setting up one of the biggest stories of the year.

NOAH: Dangan Yankees (Masato Tanaka & Takashi Sugiura) vs. TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls) - [1/10/15]

An absolute killer match right here as the team that racked up all the year-end awards for Tag Team of the Year, duel NOAH & ZERO1 tag champs "Dangan Yankees" puts NOAH's version of the belts on the line against former champs TMDK. Having been defeated by the Yankees before, TMDK vows to either win the straps here or never challenge for them again. By the time you get to the 24:00 mark of the video, these motherfuckers are just beating the living shit out of each other.

ZERO1: Masato Tanaka, Shinjiro Otani, Kohei Sato, Hideki Suzuki & Yusaku Obata vs. Takashi Sugiura, Daisuke Sekimoto, Yoshihiro Takayama, Ryouji Sai & Akebono - [1/1/15]

ZERO1 is the best when it comes to grimy, underground, underrated, under-appreciated, completely slept-on quality stuff. All-star game type shit right here. Gauntlet style, and it goes over an hour in length, so it's worth pacing yourself, and even more worth it to stick it out. This one features the defending champs in the previous video, Tanaka & Sugiura on opposite sides for the night, and that shit gets heated.

BJW: Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi vs. Shuji Ishikawa & Kohei Sato - [1/2/15]

And finally, we get some quality BJW~! If you're a believer of the myth that Big Japan is only hardcore death match stuff, fear no longer. Top notch pro wrestling here. More Sekimoto, more Sato, and Okabayashi has finally returned after a year on the shelf. This one is from the BJW You Tube page which is always HD and free of Japanese commentary. Great picture, great audio, great match. The Big Japan roster never fails to deliver.

  1. If you don't like it, don't read it.

  3. I really don't think that tag team won ALL of the year end awards. That's the sort of stuff that ruins these for me and makes me actively dislike you. There was no need to write that. It makes you come off as a silk shirt wearing over the top fan boy. Have a little self respect.

  4. The Season 2 Episode 3 distinction of this column is also horribly pretentious. Weekly columns do not have seasons or episodes. You are an amazingly off putting gaijin.

  5. Doc, I enjoy your columns and I'm enough of a fan of NJPW to know some of these names and have an appreciation for the matches. So, I'm going to give you some criticism and I hope it comse off as constructive.

I think this column would be better if you included less matches and really explained who's who. Like, you and I both know Marufuji is a wrestling god who's more or less the face of NOAH. We both know Marufuji and KENTA had legendary battles and Marufuji almost never jobs. No one else knows that, though. That would help put the match in context.

It would also help to tell a bit about Kojima. I doubt most of the people here know he's NJPW or that NJPW bought NOAH and the tension between the fanbases. Also, I'm very sure no one knows Suzuki-gun are mega heels lead by a scary ass dude in Minoru Suzuki. Also, it's definitely worth adding Suzuki-gun used to be Kojma-gun before Kojima got beat up by his own stable.

There's a LOT of story in that match beyond - some guy named Marufuji fights some other guy named Kojima and some group called Suzuki-gun attacked.

The tag team stuff also needs a lot of context. I honestly feel adding the context and explaining it will go a long ways to making your columns better.

  6. Does anyone have more context about what Doc said about ZERO1 being grimy, underground wrestling. It sounds really interesting, but I'm at work and can't watch wrestling right now, but am very interested in what that sentence means.

  7. I don't know the Japanese scene well enough to know what he means, either. All I know is DGUSA, NPJW, and a little NOAH.

  8. It seems no length of break will make you less insufferable, lol.

  9. Wow ! I didn't know that !

  10. What do you mean, break? I haven't taken a break from here. Did you take a break from reading my posts?

  11. Word. While I appreciate that, I have no plans at the current time to do anything other than say "Yo, killer match right here, you should check it out". If this shit connects with people, they'll be compelled to delve deeper on their own. If not, that's fine. It takes me 5 minutes to whip these up, that's all I can afford. If people don't want to watch Shane Haste come of age, for instance, so be it.

    But right on, none-the-less.

  12. Its roster isn't the best looking (Otani), its fan base is less than All Japan which is pretty damn low, and they use this ugly yellow ring mat. Its not aesthetically pleasing to the eye from a cosmetic standpoint, but these guys (Masato Tanaka, for one) go out there and beat the shit out of each other. You can find matches from their dojo on DailyMotion, and its this "fight club" kind of style. I dig it.

  13. so it's a bunch of ugly men beating the tar out of each other in an ugly ring in front of a small crowds?

And its got Masato Tanaka & Shingiro Ohtani?

  14. See, you got me psyched up for it already..

  15. Shut up John Edwards
