Screwing up the Ascension

Instead of having the Ascension debut by attacking the Usos last week, they have the squash Mizdow one of the most over acts in wrestling, and then beat jobbers while JBL buries them on commentary.   After all the time in NXT how would you have debuted them?

The debut is the least of the problems here.  They kept them in developmental for over two years waiting for creative to have something to do with them, and this is what they have?  The company that micromanages names and branding couldn't even take 10 minutes to come up with better fucking names than "Konor" and "Viktor"?  They literally did nothing in NXT but squashing geeks for years, never learned to work a proper match, and suddenly they're "ready" for the main show with the exact same gimmick?

Audience of one.  It's all you can even say at this point.

  1. Worst, they only won against jobber and nobody, and they lost to the first real tag team they faced, that does not make them look good at all. After that they also been squashed themself by Balor and Itami twice. So we can't say they left NxT with the best momentum.

I could have been fine with everything, but as soon as Konor said "Yo Viktor!", they officially died in my mind.

  3. I saw these guys for the first time tonight and they did nothing for me.

  4. Konnor is an awful pro wrestler. He was in developmental when they had Deep South. The guy sucks and to expect him to be anything on the main roster is insane. Viktor is a decent enough wrestler but has a shitty look, like someone who should be trading wins with Sam Houston in 1988 WWF house show openers.

Bottom line, the team was never good to begin with and no one should be shocked that they have bombed in their first two matches.

  5. That Ascension match was one of the most mindboggling segments I've ever seen. The announcers just buried them in a jobber squash. What on earth was the purpose? Nevermind that they suck and have a terrible look and were going nowhere anyway.

Highlanders 2k15, that's all they are. They'll be relegated to Superstars tapings by Mania time.

  7. The Ascension screams '80's indy act to me. With the ridiculous growling, snarling and blatant Road Warrior gimmick infringement, I'm afraid these two are not long for the main stage world.

    ReplyDelete
  8. They come across like two goofs pretending to be 80's wrestlers in a kids comedy film.

  9. Demos and LOD both seemed like bruisers to me. Tough guys. They pulled that off.

These guys look like Mortal Kombat 3 cosplayers.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Exactly! They fit the stereotypical mode of what a tag team would look like if created by someone who had never watched professional wrestling.

  11. Also the bigger guy is not in shape, and has flab everywhere. They look like a bunch of clowns. And once again their theme music along with all the newer wrestlers is pure crap. You have no idea who they are when the first chord hits, which is a huge problem with a lot of the wrestlers today

They look like a CAW tag team where you were too lazy to use the body editor. Cesaro and Kidd will make them look like dogshit.

  13. These guys are future endeavored in 2-3 years. NXT disguised their limitations but no way in hell are the script writers at WWE going to do them any favors. They can't even use GOOD talent right.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If Bill Eadie could play a badass in paint, these guys can. The problem is they have no idea how to do it and have been thrown to some very bored wolves.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bryan Alvarez seems spot on when he said after the Ascension debut that this LOD ripoff was something Vince found funny at first, and then they'd be jobbing in a month. I just feel bad for these guys... they've been trying for years to make WWE and then they're some cruel joke.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This adds more fuel to the "Kevin Dunn is sandbagging NXT for his own sake" talk, no?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Maybe they can be completely shifted out...like they add a third dude and then Konnor gets replaced completely and then Viktor gets replaced too.

Cause the Illuminati entrance is fucking boss.

  18. WWE has forgotten how to put on wrestling shows. Look at Roman Reigns! He is supposed to be the chosen one yet he gets his ass kicked in every match before hitting his three moves and winning. Dean Ambrose, who Vince supposedly likes, hasn't gotten a meaningful win in ages. It's no surprise that the Ascension are already being treated like jokes.

Oh definitely, it's the only way you can explain why they're being booked the way they're being booked.

  20. Eadie was also a big bigger and his face paint was cooler.

Just remember guys, of you think this is bad, just wait till Adrien Neville debuts.

  22. WWE is just so screwed right now. I didn't watch RAW tonight, but it sounds awful. I don't even know what happened on the full show since I haven't seen a recap. This company has just forgotten how to book talent. Even when joke characters debuted in the 1980s and 1990s, they were still put over strong at first. Hell, Battle Kat won some squashes!

  23. Maybe this is all related: At Mania, Hunter's got Sting down for the count, when suddenly --

HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAY! ::Red Arrow::

    ReplyDelete
  24. Exactly. I took one look at them when they came out last week and laughed. They reminded me of those thin dudes Mel Gibson destroyed in the Road Warrior.

And he completely misses, with HHH just looking at him awkwardly before mopping his dead body out of the ring.

  26. Someone needs to do "Vince McMahon Reviews Raw" and look at the show from the audience's perspective (ie. him).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good call, totally forgot about those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I suspect they're being made to look ridiculous on purpose right now so they can turn this into a comedy gimmick in a short while.

I would love that, it could be the new Cranky Vince.

  30. Everyone here absolutely lost their shit when that atrocious promo was over and JBL delivered one of his best lines in ages: "These guys couldn't carry the Road Warriors' bags."

I don't know anyone who has a positive thing to say about The Ascension, so hearing a commentator just blatantly bury them this quickly made my day.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's probably true that Viktor and Konnor are simply lost causes in the ring and aren't going to suddenly be watchable in-ring performers, not to mention the fact that their gimmick is pretty silly. THAT BEING SAID, oh my god, what's to be gained by immediately burying these two? Even though I'm not a big fan of the two as workers, I feel sorry for them as people --- they work hard on NXT, finally get the big call up to the big leagues and their careers are basically already dead on arrival. Talk about disheartening.

It's the oldest rule of wrestling promotion: accentuate a guy's strengths, minimize his weaknesses (or hide them completely). Perhaps the best example of this was the classic ECW when you had a C-minus roster in terms of pure talent but it was booked and presented to look big-time. In today's WWE, however, they literally seem to go out of their way to book guys into the worst possible situations or ask them to specifically do things that they can't do just to create an excuse for a burial.

    ReplyDelete
  32. They might not even get the month.

    ReplyDelete
  33. They win all their matches. How is that a burial?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Because they were so dominant in NXT and treated like they were a big deal there, I think we all assumed The Ascension would be treated like a big deal on the main roster. But when you really listen to those introductory promos (corny lines) and how the announcers talked about them last night, it makes more sense that The Ascension was brought up to the main roster to be jobbers themselves. They're not The Shield or The Wyatts. They're Fandango and Los Matadores. They'll rack up wins at first -- just like Fandango and Los Matadores did -- to establish them as somewhat of a threat, but then they'll settle into a midcard jobbing role.

  35. Cena v Rusev *****!!!

HHH v Sting The first ever ****** match!!!!

    Bryan v Brock...meh.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Then one of them will randomly show up on a TNA show and TNA will be total dicks about it and go out of there way to point out a WWE wrestler in their audience?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm ok with people leaving NXT looking at the lights. And really the majority of the audience won't know that they went out to the Lucha Dragons and Balor and Itami. Most of the Shield went out looking at the lights, but when they debuted, they made them out to be a super bad ass team that was taking out top guys. As opposed to whatever the hell is happening here.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cena v Rusev could easily be four stars.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the gimmick, but I just don't see how two guys with underwhelming looks, charisma, ring ability and mic ability are supposed to succeed.

Though that Titantron vid is super cool.
