Sionne Driver?

Hi Scott,

Hope your Xmas and New Year's celebrations went well J

Just working my way through this wonderful YouTube channel called Monsoon Classic and I came across this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1OIWF7qz10 - New Headshrinkers v Smoking Gunns early '95

In my mind this match is notable for 2 things… About 50 seconds in for something you just don't see any more and about 6:40 in… not sure how Billy managed to dodge a bullet there!

Not sure I've seen many other near misses in the WWF this bad… Warrior/Rude from Summerslam 89 perhaps?

That was one fucking ugly piledriver attempt.

The triple clothesline sequence was pretty fun, though, and I also laughed at Billy's attempted fistdrop on Fatu.  Pretty good match overall, actually.

  1. It is a real mish mash of tag teams at the moment but I can't wait to see how it all ends up, I predict The Shield vs. Angle & Benoit as the final match because why the fuck not.

  2. Random pairings aside, the Hardys vs. Tito and Martel is an awesome fantasy matchup. ARIBA!

    ReplyDelete
  3. the WWF's first few shareholder conference calls use to be the company raving about the future star they were grooming Test to become...

    ReplyDelete
  4. Austin and Dude have potential to upset The Shield.

  5. Scott is such a mark for Samoans. It's endearing.

  6. In four shots, John Cena and various wacky partners combined for 924 votes.

Quite a few teams (Rock & Sock, the Quebecers, Eddie & Chavo, TWGTT, NAO among others) got more than that in their one matchup.

    Yeah, I'm bored.

  7. Some of the winners leave me mindfucked. Did you guys even remember their reigns, or just voted them because of their names?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Both. Some I voted for their teamwork, others for how much I liked or disliked then, some on their reigns, etc. Vote any way ya like.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Owen Hart will be in the finals. Look how easily all 3 of his teams cruised through. Like an artist or musician, being tragically dead raises your value through the roof, even if you weren't as good as some of your not-dead counterparts.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't disagree with this.....but Owen was pretty awesome nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not if they want to lose credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ugh. Reminds me of when people take the Styles Clash wrong and your just assuming they broke their neck

Im sure Barbarian got an earful for that

    ReplyDelete
  13. WWF sure love their bland big men. I think it's funny that the first time Test was able to draw heat during his heel run in 2003 and instead of pushing him like they've pushed him previously they decide to job him out. WWE is so confusing at times.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Me too, Austin/Dude were sweet... even if they were just a wacky Vince Russo "let's team up the two guys who are feuding" team.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If I can't remember your reign, you ain't getting my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not sure what ya mean. Who'd be losing credibility?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm voting based on who I think would go over if booked right now and both teams were in their prime. Whatever accomplishments or lack of put entirely aside. Therefore, a team like Flair/Piper in their prime could win the whole thing. OR maybe on my mind one of them turns on the other to lose their match. SWERVE!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiian Cenaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

That's the last you will hear of him in this tourney!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Flair/Piper in their prime: YES!
Flair/Piper when they were actually Tag Champs: HELL NO!

    ReplyDelete
  20. The match was weird because the way it was booked you'd think WWF were building up to a threeway at WM, but didn't happen. Maybe that was their original plan but the Sionne Driver caused them to be buried and have plans changed.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Their moobs would smother all opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  23. For some reason I sense sarcasm here. As if you think it's as "prestigious" as Shawn's European Title was "coveted".

    ReplyDelete
  24. He was awesome. However his crap team with 650 pound completely immobile Yokozuna rolled up the Usos by 300 votes. Is there anyone honestly who'd rather watch Yoko/Owen-Smokin' Gunns rather than Usos-Wyatt Fam? To me that smacks of a sympathy vote.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well for the most part I agree with the tournament winners and even with the few I disagreed with, I can let it slide just because I can see there being no true winners but Shield is sooooo much better than Austin/Dude in this bracket, so if they don't win by a landslide I'd be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Best 3 member team of all time? Shield, Freebirds, Jersey Triad, Demolition?

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's fair enough. I have to admit my fond memory of Owen's celebrating winning the titles coupled with me not giving a crap about the Usos led to me voting for Owen/Yoko. So I guess your right.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, its been a strange thing looking at some of these teams. I swear I've watched WWE non-stop for decades, but I honestly don't remember some of these combos.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, Usos are better workers, but in 10 years time will anybody even remember Usos held the tag titles? People still remember Owen's reign as tag champion because it was the first belt he won and the team were booked to look like a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yoko wasn't immobile back then! He was AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good points all. I guess I was just arguing for votes based on merit rather than pity/nostalgia for the halcyon days of '95.

    ReplyDelete
  33. His weight gave him instant credibility. If he sat on you, you knew it was over.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's a shitty argument; no one would ever rather see the Smokin' Gunns.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'd vote YokOweb over Usos, but it wouldn't be for pity and nostalgia. YokOwen were just more memorable.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Their WM match was awesome. Yoko crushed Billy or Bart and Owen teases finishing off them off with the sharpshooter, but just pins him instead. I love little touches like that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So happy The Uso's were blown out. To me they are the embodiment of how bland, stake, and boring the product has become. I have no recollection of them ever being entertaining. Sometimes they are heels. Sometimes they are faces. Boring tag matches with shit opponents. They will hit a splash to the outside and from the top rope. They can't cut promos. Zero charisma. Neither can be a singles star. Bland and boring.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Uso-crazy. I think I'm going to create separation from this debate. Sound arguments made by all, however.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My 12 year old and 9 year old disagree. Sadly for us grown-ups, that's the target audience. Have no particular allegiance to them. Do think they put on good matches though. Best team in a terrible time for tag wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wouldn't go that far, yeah I agree they aren't that great but they're not as bad as this comment would suggest. The Usos are perfectly serviceable midcarders.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Poor guy must have been crying on the inside.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm just saying including the Gunns into the argument is dumb. It'd be like saying you didn't pick the Rockers because you wouldn't want to see them vs. the Bushwhackers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'd want to see that. You know Jannetty would 360 sell that battering ram.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I never really got into The Shield. Of the three, only Ambrose is entertaining to me....and he wasn't part of the tag champs.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I wish Bundy and Studd had a tag title reign.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's not that Austin and Dude weren't entertaining, it's just that they only had like 1 match. Even if the Shield sucked, they should still win this bracket just because they had more than one match.

    ReplyDelete
  47. A team Natural Disasters and Big Show/Kane could have moulded themselves on.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's true. But the way I'm voting (and we all have our own ways for this tournament) I include stuff like the stunner on JR. and their 1998 feud against each other (one of my personal favorite feuds). Some would argue that I shouldn't count that stuff and should only look at them as a team....but I'm not

    ReplyDelete
  49. And I'm not a wrestler or anything, but shouldn't Sionne have known that Billy was waaaay out of position for that move?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I wouldn't mind them if not for the stupid entrance and JBL's obsession with their catchphrase.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Definitely should have had a "nope" signal on that one from somewhere.

If there's anytime to stop and repeat a spot, driver spots are the ones.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was going to argue against this until I saw who posted the comment. Highly disagree with it, but you are the Danimal.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Not only that but the match was mostly likely taped so they could've edited the original attempt out.

    ReplyDelete
  54. As a kid I was a big fan of Studd. I was pretty sure he and the Barbarian were the toughest men on the planet.

  56. Owen/Yoko was a solid team in my eyes, without taking into consideration Owen's death. It's been 16 years. I think we're out of the era of sympathy love.

Ah, that explains why Benoit is doing so well :P

    ReplyDelete
  58. Gunns vs. Headshrinkers vs. Blu Twins? I don't see it happening, simply because WWF Didn't do 3-way matches at the time, just teased multiple feuds inside one bubble.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm sure doing a threeway was something that was talked about at the time even though they never did it and I think WCW did a similar triangle match with Vader/Sting/Bossman at the time, so maybe WWF was planning to do a stip like that instead. But it did seem weird that WWF went out of their way to protect all 3 teams like that when WM was around the corner.
