Tag Team Tourney: The Sweet Sixteen!

Down to the nitty gritty.  Sadly, Kid & Jannetty lost ANOTHER nail-biter, 49-51 to the Eddie-Rey team, and no last minute surge saved them this time.  But really, Eddie Guerero and Rey Mysterio?

On with the tournament!  Now there’s some bigtime showdowns on display.

  1. No matter how many teams... no matter where they're placed... it always comes down to LOD vs Steiners.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Seriously, Rock and Mankind over the Quebecers? Are you people on drugs?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Rock and sock were an awesome team

    ReplyDelete
  4. Just hurry up and crown the Steiners champions already.

    Greatest tag team ever.

    ReplyDelete
  5. People complained of the Owen love for questionable reasons... how did ANY of Eddie's teams make it this far? The reign with Tajiri was forgettable (and simply a Plan B), the stuff with Rey Jr. was the "wacky teams no one liked but still like I guess", and Los Guerreros were OK, but I never dug Chavo.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not as awesome as the Quebecers. They're NOT the Mounties.

    ReplyDelete
  7. (double checks) Ew... that's some AWFUL seeding.

    ReplyDelete
  8. At least Owen's teams were awesome and Eddie/Chavo are the only Eddie team that deserve to advance since they helped carry Smackdown during the Smackdown 6 era.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I personally loved Owen/Yoko and Owen/Bulldog, but that could also be credited to how weak the division was at the time. They both felt more plutonic as a team than most "thrown togethers." Owen/Jarrett was whatever.

The Quebecers were a good team, but would not be able to withstand Rock n Sock. It's a logical conclusion.

    ReplyDelete
  11. LOD = a bunch of Demo knockoffs...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mick turned his back on Rock for finding his book in the trash. Quebecers win handicap style with extreme cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Owen/Jarrett were a good midcard workrate team, but sadly they couldn't draw heat as a team without Debra.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sports Entertainment triumphs over Professional Wrestling as The Quebecers lose to the Rock N' Sock Comedy Duo. A sad day. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to troll Gorilla Monsoon on Coliseum Home Video commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Only Johnny Polo on PBP could make a 'Taker/Crush match enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Finally the Undertaker can get revenge for being the last Skyscraper standing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:22 PM

Kid and Jannetty aren't in the same league as Eddie and Rey

    ReplyDelete
  18. The underdogs ran out of magic. Tis a sad day for fantasy booking.

    ReplyDelete
  19. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:23 PM

Stop crying. It's random seeding. EVERY TEAM WILL LOSE EVENTUALLY EXCEPT THE WINNER.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'll cry all I want to. Crying about meaningless crap is an entitlement of over-zealous fantasy booking nerds.

I wonder how much Bischoff paid the Steiners to lose to the fat, lazy Road Warriors on Nitro in 1996. Steiners beat them in 1989, but if a tree falls and no one is around to see it...

    ReplyDelete
  22. That match was on one of the recent DVD releases, was it not?

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you voted for Bulldog/Owen (who were together less than a year and didn't exactly light the world on fire) over New Age Outlaws, you should feel bad.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessJanuary 5, 2015 at 5:28 PM

I voted for the Quebecers. Few times, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bulldog/Owen were part of Camp Cornette and the Hart Foundation for 2 years.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In anticipation of my favorite team winning this tournament, I am uploading the cover to one of my very first wrestling mags where the Road Warriors won the real Crockett Cup tournament trophy.. Not trying to influence your votes, but Road Warrior Hawk's family could really use the prize money.. sniff.. sniff..

    Harts/Shield final, son.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Road Warriors vs. BoD Hell if you Sell match? After much no selling and ref bumps, Kane resorts to trying to set Animal on fire. Animal back drops Kane over the top rope and they brawl on the outside. Paul Bearer tries to hit Hawk with the urn, but Paul Ellering stops him. Hawk grabs the urn and knocks Taker out with it for the pin. BUT since this is NWA, the head ref reverses the decision and BoD win by dq (never underestimate the over the top rope dq rule)

Jim Ross is sitting in a pile of extoplasm thinking about Hoss Warriors vs Hosses of Destructions

    ReplyDelete
  30. Same here. Not just because I'm (obviously) a Quebecers fan, but I never found Rock N' Sock to be funny (which was the point of them). Mick is so damn proud of that "This Is Your Life" segment but I didn't think it was funny at all. And it's certainly not rewatchable.

  31. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:36 PM

Better wrestlers, better matches, more high profile feuds. Gave it to them over catchphases and 2 minute Raw matches.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Who's reffing this Harts/Bulldogs match?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Year and a half. Whatever. NAO were huge during the attitude era, had a bigger impact on tag team wrestling (not even debatable), and could actually cut promos.

Internet loves their workrate darlings tho.

    ReplyDelete
  34. WatercoolersandAirportsJanuary 5, 2015 at 5:38 PM

"THOSE ARE FOUR BIG OL' BOYS KANG!!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bulldog and Owen were an amazing tag team in the ring together. They were getting face pops on workrate alone (virtually unheard of at the time), gracefully carried the horrible division for a good nine months, and were entertaining as hell. NAO were entertaining but nothing else, and their act was stale within nine months. I legitimately struggle to think of a good match they had outside of the one at WM 14 with Cactus and Funk.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If you want to crown them, then crown their ass

    ReplyDelete
  37. Agreed. Much more concise than what I just wrote.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I will. But given the stiffness of the match, my head will be decapitated within seconds

    ReplyDelete
  39. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:39 PM

Kane & RVD defeated The Road Warriors CLEAN on Raw. I'm sure Kane & The Undertaker can get by them. Undertaker POSSESSES Rocco the Talking Puppet, who causes a DQ for his team.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Outlaws had a good run, probably the best "attitude era" team until the rise of E&C, Hardys, and Dudleys, but that doesn't make them a spectacular team. They were poor workers who had a couple of sing-along sessions.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nah you hit the nail on the head too....just took you more words to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:40 PM

    Diana Smith

    ReplyDelete
  43. Check out their tag match against Holly and Bart Gunn at KotR98. I'd say that's their best match.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That dumpster match they had with the Dudleyz wasn't bad, and dare I say it, fun! Coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  45. hey those catchphrases lasted 2 minutes after a while!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Danny Davis.. so you know it'll be above board.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm assuming at least a couple days of rest between each round. Out of nowhere the Road Warriors (in their late 80's best) come out and absolutely smoke Taker and Kane in a GIANT shock to everyone in attendance!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Danny Davis of course.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well anybody considers his officiating biased, don't expect an apology from him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTwTXU6A_vw

    ReplyDelete
  50. If this is russo era Kane and Taker, Rocco would be Paul Bearer's long missing brother now trapped as a dummy until the demon that transformed him has been slayed...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I voted for the Budogs because of this.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I always thought of them more as the Smackdown 5+1. (the +1 being Chavo)

    ReplyDelete
  53. CruelConnectionNumber2January 5, 2015 at 5:51 PM

    I'm using reverse psychology!

    ReplyDelete
  54. If you wouldn't mark out for LOD vs BOD, then do not call yourself a wrestling fan.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Watch scott be trolling us and have it be the 2014 version of the New Age Outlaws.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I remember that. Then they vanished. That was weird. I guess they needed the money.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Maybe if they were the Mounties they would have advanced. An ex mountie and a future pirate could never withstand the ludacrisness of the double people's elbow

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yet the catchphrases and 2 minute Raw matches is what far more people were entertained by.

Workrate aside, what set Owen and Bulldog apart? They were tag champs in 1996 and part of 97. I don't think anyone even cared when they broke up.

Great wrestlers for sure but their impact wasn't close to NAO (shitty workers that they were).

    ReplyDelete
  59. ROCK AND SOCK CHEATED! Going over the Quebecers is a MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE!

    SACRE BLEU!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I've been ringing Tunney's phone off the hook over this.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Eh.. it was funny then, the same way Leave it to Beaver was probobly funny in the 50's.

    ReplyDelete
  62. WatercoolersandAirportsJanuary 5, 2015 at 6:02 PM

That was Road Dogg and X-Pac.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Worse, powers of pain knockoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I thought that was against cactus jack and funk? Im befuddled!

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Demon Kane lost by 666 votes. Irony is ironic

    ReplyDelete
  66. The head of NFL officiating.

He was spotted at the Hart Foundation offices this week.

  67. WatercoolersandAirportsJanuary 5, 2015 at 6:08 PM

The Dudleyz vs Road Dogg and X-Pac Dumpster match KIng of the Ring 2000.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I didn't think it was. Not that I hated it or anything. But it just dragged on. If WCW wasn't a freakin' joke at the time, I would have flipped. But that's neither here nor there at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I would mark out for a 2-minute Road Warrior squash.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh yes, GOODBYE BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION!

    ReplyDelete
  71. It was the highest rated segment in RAW history. Nothing has even come close since.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Rey Mysterio? He wears a mask for gawds sake!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Well then get Monsoon on the line!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I voted for the Brothers. Never cared for LoD.

    ReplyDelete
  75. '91 Steiner's vs. Hardyz would own. And by own, I mean "the Hardyz would be thrown all over the ring."

    ReplyDelete
  76. It would be awesome to see Jeff take an overhead belly-to-belly with a full 450 and land on his face.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Even I would find that awesome and I really, really hate Kane/Undertaker.

    ReplyDelete
  78. There was no rule stated that you have to vote for which team was more popular. F populism.
