Tag Tournament Round One: Block Y-AF

Not gonna lie, whoever gets out of this block is gonna have an easy time of it, because there’s some shit teams in here. However, the one match killed me when I saw that the random seedings produced it, and I'm sure you can figure out which one.

  1. I feel your pain Scott. It's a tough call between the Basham Brothers and Rico/Haas. There's no right answer.

At least Edge & Christian was an easy one.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I voted E & C because I figured everyone would vote for the Brainbusters on the criteria that Tully has the hottest offspring.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Tully and Arn vs Edge n Christian is not a fair matchup compared to some of these others. I mean honestly how many times did austin tag with taker??? a hanfdul?

    ReplyDelete
  4. TJ: What was the original plan for RVD"s ECW title run ? and PLEASE no snarky answers.

  5. Adam "Colorado" CurryJanuary 1, 2015 at 1:21 AM

They only had the belts for 2 weeks, so probably 4 at most.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Bodydonnas, although it was tough because Sunny might turn on them for kofi and Evan's weed.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Just spent five minutes on Wikipedia finding out if he was Rachel Blanchard's father.

    He is not.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I know what you mean, Scott. Choosing between Wild Samoans and Godwinns is like choosing between my children.

    ReplyDelete
  9. TJJ: I like puppies.

    ReplyDelete
  10. What on earth is a Rachel Blanchard?

Tessa Blanchard has been a Rosebud for a few weeks.

If I were even remotely sober, I'd find a pic.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Heyman was building a match between him and Mike Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I feel old (and a little ashamed), because I immediately knew who you were talking about when you said she was the girlfriend from Road Trip.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That's so crazy that the WWE only reaches it's highs by sheer fluke never by planned booking.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Don't be ashamed. This is a safe place. And that was a great movie.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Los Guerreros

    ReplyDelete
  16. Would that matter if WWE came calling and he wanted to go?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hopefully considering that it's a WWE tag team poll, E&C will run away with it, but if fans include the WCW work as well, it could get close.
Whoever wins that one will have to face Dudleyz next round so it's far from a easy journey

    ReplyDelete
  18. WM13 is currently though of as one of the worst Wrestlemania, replace the Bret/Austin match with a undercard match and there would be no competition.

    ReplyDelete
  19. And building and building and building.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So does anyone know what Wrestlemania 13 was supposed to look like? Where were Austin, Sid, Undertaker, Vader, and Mankind all supposed to fall?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Considering how many guys Sunny has supposedly been with, I don't remember hearing any rumours of her and a black guy.

    I loved that movie...

    Asshole! lol

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sid v Taker was a definite, title or no title.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Taker costs Sid the match to set up their match at Mania. And I think Sid beats Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  27. And what happens to Shawn? Shawn v Taker at Mania 14?

    ReplyDelete
  28. The original rumored plan was something like this:
    Sid-Taker
    Bret-Michaels
    Austin-Pillman
    Owen-Bulldog
    Rocky-Mero

Mankind vs Vader or Terry Funk

    ReplyDelete
  29. Tough to imagine Vince turning his champion heel mid run, also what reason does Bret have to turn heel if he hasn't been screwed out of the Title?

    ReplyDelete
  30. But Bulldog is tag champ...?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not sure what Shawn would do, maybe a program with Shamrock but Kane-Taker was pretty much penciled in for WM since Kane's debut.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mankind v Mero was also penciled in but Mankind refused. Then Mero got hurt and that changed Mero v Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  33. But we might not get kane if we don't have Takers title run.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He was also the European champion. Only reason Bulldog still had the tag strap was because Bret insisted on it otherwise I'm sure Bulldog would have dropped it to Furnas and LaPhon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJanuary 1, 2015 at 7:47 AM

E and C win a TLC match. Brain Busters win a standard match.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thats a better overall card, but we lose Hart vs Austin

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think Owen v Bulldog would have made more sense due to their tension. But Austin pullman doesn't make sense because I can't imagine Pillman being ready to return from injury.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Brainbusters vs Edge and christain is the only match so far that I had to stop and think about

    ReplyDelete
  39. The wrestling business has always been filled with little weird circumstances/coincidences and it really makes you wonder if guys would have become the stars they ended up being if just a small historical event was changed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think I have heard Shawn vs HHH mentioned

    ReplyDelete
  41. If Hunter wins the KotR in 96 WCW wins the Monday Night Wars IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  42. "I'm the world champion yet you American fans cheer Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels as your heroes. Cheer me dammit, I'm the pinnacle of excellence!"

    ReplyDelete
  43. Vic Venom would have had to convince him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And then I imagine a DX feud after Mania 14 with HBK and the NAO v HHH and XPac???

    ReplyDelete
  45. Pillman-Austin was the original plan since November 96 and Pillman would have been healed around that time, but Pillman reinjured his ankle in January 97 which probably caused bookers to change their plans and Austin-Bulldog did seem likely as Plan B as they had a mini feud going on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hart vs Michaels
    Sid vs Taker
    Austin vs Pillman
    Bulldog vs Owen
    Vader vs Mankind
    Ahmed/LOD vs Nation
    Rocky vs HHH
    Mero vs Goldust
    Bangers vs Godwinns

    ReplyDelete
  47. HBK v HHH seems likely for WM14 but anything after that probably wasn't planned as I'm sure the bookers wouldn't have known that Sean Waltman would be back in the company by then.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think Ahmed-Faarooq was the original plan as a singles match because the bookers didn't know LOD would be back in the company by then.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Easy win for E&C (over Kenzo and Dupree)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well except for the idea that the fans have to share his moral code about who should be cheered.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hunter v Goldust was signed no matter what because both had been engaged in the most boring feud in wrestling history with one another.

    ReplyDelete
  52. More likely "HRRERRO"

    ReplyDelete
  53. Demolition v. Road Warriors next bracket may be even tougher.

(Actually, I'd give that to Demolition just based on entrance music alone.)

    ReplyDelete
  54. It actually managed to sort of do the college party movies correctly and while it pandered a bit, there was some smart, if low brow, humor in it.

Compared to something like...I don't know...Grandma's boy, which went after the same demographic, but treated the audience like morons.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't think there's any historical significance to who wins KOTR. Austin's 3:16 speech was big, but I don't think it makes or breaks him

    ReplyDelete
  56. It was the perfect storm. Not only was Austin passing out and looking tough, but it was happening against a guy who a significant portion of the audience was ready to turn against

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yeah, I would guess a HHH-HBK series running a few PPVs to elevate HHH

    ReplyDelete
  58. Without Austin winning KotR theirs no Austin 316 which is as synonymous with the Attitude era as anything.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah, I have to assume WM14 looks like:

    Hart vs. Austin, WWF Title
    Taker vs. Kane
    HHH vs. HBK
    Outlawz vs. Cactus/Funk, TAG Titles
    Rock vs. Shamrock, IC Title
    Mero/Sable vs. Goldust/Luna
    Taka vs. Aguila, LHW Title
    Tag Team Battle Royale
Maybe Owen faces Jarrett in a EURO title match?

    ReplyDelete
  60. For sure. They could have had Owen/Bulldog put Furnas/Lafon over for the tag belts to start the disention between Smith & Owen. They fight at WM13 and the next night, Bret brings them back together.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yeah as a dumb 5 year old wwf fan I thought the road warriors were just powers of pain and demolition rip offs. I know where my alligiencies lie.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Foley said in his book that Foley-Funk was suppose to happen at 14 in a convoluted gimmick match. I guess NAO would have defended against LOD or something.

    ReplyDelete
  63. They really should have lost the tag belts and focused on their singles run after the Hart Foundation reformed because it just cheapened the Euro/IC title afterwards because it was never defended.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Knowing Vince Furnas and Kroffat wouldn't get the belts. Probably the Headbangers.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Furnas & LaPhon were treated as a big deal when they first came in, but it seemed Vince/management soured on them around WM.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Bashams vs. Rico & Haas screams for a Time Limit Draw/Double Elimination Option.

    ReplyDelete
  67. the problem is after Austin wins he's not on the next PPV, fights Yokozuna on a brawl for all, and then Marc Mero at International Incident.

The REAL reason Austin blew up was he impressed Bret Hart, who chose to work with him in his comeback. Where Austin blew up was the way he single-handley built the heat for that Survivor Series program.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I bet they had a smackdown match because they were around at the same time. I cant even imagine how fucking dull that match mustve been. And im a haas fan.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I like Rico and Haas, but more as a "go out there and have a good, 10-minute match on Velocity" team act, not a serious Championship Team. 2004-05 was just a bad couple of years for both Tag Titles. MNM kind of brought salvation to the Smackdown side, but Raw stayed in the muck.

    ReplyDelete
  70. His fight with Mero was the next PPVS but your larger point is accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  71. also the opposite: if someone looks "badass", they are very likely to get (at least some amount of) a babyface reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  72. afaik he turned down at least one offer.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It was a large part due to injuries why 'such a mess'

    ReplyDelete
  74. For Wm 15 yes but never plan for 14

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think they were hopeful Pillman could have been ready to go by then to face austin for revenge of the chair/ankle attack but clearly he wasnt. This is just speculation on my part.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Tessa is one sexy crackbaby!

    http://www.gerweck.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Tessa-Blanchard-061314.jpg

    ReplyDelete
  77. He would've been ready, but got hurt again.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Mero vs Rocky for IC belt was planned until Mero blew out his knee. Also Goldust vs HHH also long term plan

    ReplyDelete
  79. Funk/Foley was rumored for 14 not 13. Around 13 Funk was about to headline ECW's first ppv winning the belt

    ReplyDelete
  80. thats one hell of a stretch.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Tully tears a quad upon entering the ring, and E&C get the quick win.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It was also rumored for 13 because Foley/Funk had that little exchange in their Rumble match.

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's true tho

    ReplyDelete
  84. That little exchange was a wink to their ecw cactus/funk days nothing more. Nothing was ever planned for it Funk was strictly brought into the rumble as a big name texas guy in WWF's desperate attempt to draw fans from the area to the half empty alamo dome. Funk/austin also had a hot confrontation noght before rumble on shotgun but again nothing more planned besides hyping rumble. All funk's plans for spring 97 at time of rumble were tied to ECW as he was the headlining legend they were building their title match around.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Not saying it would have happened, but was one of the rumored matches from Meltzer at the time.
