Cena vs. NXT?

Hey Scott,

I'm kind of tired of all the Roman Reigns shit, so let's talk about NXT, and more importantly, NXT being name-dropped on Raw in a Cena promo. And it wasn't Cena being a corporate shill either, he said lines to the effect of "NXT is Triple H's vision of the future, and so every guy in NXT is being trained to replace me." It's a line that was super tacked-on and basically completely irrelevant to the rest of the promo, so do you think that there's something deeper going on?

Maybe it's Cena's earnest attempt to get over the NXT guys as threats to Cena's position and future stars?

Do you think this is Cena trying to patch together WWE's freaky continuity and explain why Triple H is babyface-ish on NXT and an ultra-heel on Raw and maybe establish that Rollins was the chosen one from the beginning or something like that?

Is he being a puppet for Vince or Dunn in the bizarre WWE civil war by attempting to turn every NXT guy heel?

Or is attempting to analyze John Cena promos a waste of everybody's time and effort?

I just thought we could get some good conspiracy theories going on, and maybe get people's hopes up about The Nexus 5.0 or something.

Analyzing a Cena promo is a waste of everyone's time. Often literally, as they're just thrown out there to use up part of the three hours.  That being said, the civil war angle is far more interesting as a story than anything else they've dreamed up in the past few years.  Crazy out of touch old man Vince and his chosen one Roman Reigns opposed by HHH and the NXT guys and forced to team up with hated enemy Daniel Bryan, fighting for the soul of the WWE?  That's compelling TV.  The fact that they don't even see the storyline they're creating with their own stupidity makes them even more stupid.

  1. Some would call it... *puts on sunglasses* ...ambitiously stupid.

    Shit!!

I should have let Abeyance do it.

  3. Abeyance is best of the blog otters at greetings, definitely.

  4. A civil war angle could be amazing.

    If done properly.

    But it wouldn't be.

  5. Come on, Scott, you're better than the "If they don't do exactly this idea right now they're stupid" crowd.

  7. Yes, but those guys can't stay there forever. Guys like Zayn, Itami, Owens and Balor didn't sign with WWE to make 25k a year and hang out at a training facility.

  8. Yeah. You know, the WrestleCrap guy.

  9. This was my saddest day as a Hulkamaniac. I hated this whole thing. Looking back years later, I love WrestleMania 4 and 5 and The Mega-Powers, none of which would've happened the way they did without this. But man, this might still be the moment that I hated the most in my wrestling fandom, Hogan losing the title.

  10. Wait a minute, if the Headbangers weren't in the WWF, Blade wouldn't have had anyone to play with. That means Bret wouldn't have got a chance to talk to Vince because he had to keep an eye on his son.

Without talking to Bret, Vince wouldn't have found out Bret's stubborn intentions for the finish and so Vince wouldn't have taken matters into his own hands.

Don't you see? THE HEADBANGERS CAUSED THE MONTREAL SCREWJOB.

  11. It could have come up at two and gotten the same point across. It's very clear that Hebner isn't even looking.

  12. I'm picturing Hogan throwing my dad (on his birthday) out of the ring. And he looks like your dad, who I've never seen before. Yep.

  13. For me the Giant was always over in WCW - from start to the end and he was always a legit threat to anyone but in WWFe he never was the guy you would put in a Wrestlemania single match main event. Was it just the name? Would have "Andre the Big Show" been a big draw?

  14. Even Hogan almost cried in the post match interview. You would never see that from Cena today.

  15. Conversely, as a former resident of Sarasota, I was elated that Hogan lost the title. When I found out about the tournament at WM IV I was extremely hopeful for the other former Sarasota resident.

  16. Actually, WWF Magazine revealed that Dave Hebner had a twin brother.

  17. Brilliant. I loved The Death of WCW. Oh and that shoot interview with Vince Russo.

Precisely. Rock used his wrestling career to springboard to bigger and better things. Hogan WANTED to do that, but ultimately never did. Hogan is the biggest celebrity icon in the history of wrestling. Rock is the biggest celebrity in the history of dudes who have wrestled.

  19. Actually, most people learned about Hogan through his role as Thunderlips in Rocky III.

  23. A little off-topic, but I wouldn't mind a story on black college football pre-1970. I've heard a lot of stories past down from my pops but nothing researched and in-depth

  25. I thought the matches were real but the gimmicks were not (as in: "they are obviously trying to come across more "flashy" for marketing reasons. obviously someone like Bob Holly is a professional wrestler, not a professional race car driver. and Kwang is not some Ninja, either").

btw: I can pinpoint the one match in which it went from "maybe it isn't that real after all" to "okay, that confirms it": Survivor Series 1994, The Bad Guys vs. The Teamsters. The Kid does a kick (or was it an enzuigiri?) against Jarrett and it could easily been seen that he had missed, but the latter sold it anyway.

  26. or have a nickname like "Titan", "Goliath", "Tower" or, if they wanted to be extra-witty, something along the lines of "Everest" or "K2" (as in Mount Everest).

also, if they wanted to really go all-out with the tasteless André references, claim that his name is Paul Roussimoff.

  27. I think part of what hurt him was that he came in during the Attitude Era where it was about personality and stories and his biggest selling point was "hey he's big!".
