ROH bigotry

Whenever the topic of ROH comes up,inevitably you see someone saying they won't watch it because of someone being a "bigot." Who's the bigot, and what did they do to earn that reputation? I know the Briscoes wear rebel flag bandanas and patches and stuff, but I always thought that was just (an ill advised) part of their "good ol' boy" gimmick, not a legitimate political statement.

Zuh?  I've never heard of any bigotry.  Perhaps your friends are thinking of Rob Feinstein and his run-in with an undercover pedophile sting operation years ago?

Pretty sure the bigot is one of the Briscos.

  2. I'm not a big ROH fan but I'm pretty sure it's because Jay Briscoe, known purveyor of homophobia and other stupid junk, is world champ?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Mr. Jay Briscoe went on a rant threatening to shoot gay people or something to that frightening affect.

It's this. Also why wwe won't go near them with a barge pole

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jay Briscoe did apologize for the most recent Twitter outburst before a ROH live event and supposedly donated his pay for two live events to anti-bullying charities. However, his pattern of behavior over the years leaves me not really wanting to support him (the same way I wouldn't watch Duck Dynasty and wasn't just overjoyed that Ultimate Warrior was getting a HOF induction) and with him firmly in place as the top star of ROH leaves me less than enthusiastic for their brand and product (among lots of other reasons).

    ReplyDelete
  7. When the world champion of a promotion is homophobic white trash, I have zero interest in watching that product.

    ReplyDelete
  8. i hope they get the title of him asap

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not sure how Feinstein got let back into the wrestling industry. Pedophilia is not learned, it is something you are born with, like being gay. He'll never be able to "cure" his attraction to young boys and should be closely monitored for the rest of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Every time I see/hear of Feinstein all I think of him getting busted for being a pedophile. How do people still work with/for him? That look on his face and than JETTING to the car and peeling The F out of there! LMAO!

    ReplyDelete
  11. lol ill pretend u said 18

    ReplyDelete
  12. Because it's wrestling. That's not a justifiable reason, mind you, but it is the reason.

    ReplyDelete
  13. While Feinstein is a creeper, his continual involvement with homoerotic entertainment is semi-logical.

Don't know about pedophilia being learned, innate, or conditioned... however, there is nothing wrong with being a pedophile. Its the acting upon it that needs to be curbed. Isn't this why Allah created erotic fiction?

    ReplyDelete
  14. "there is nothing wrong with being a pedophile."

    wtf?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just back away slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  16. He has a lot of friends in the business. Plus, money talks. If he's going to pay a wrestler to do a shoot interview, they'll do it

    ReplyDelete
  17. You can think in your head whatever you want. It's the acting upon it with actual others/children that is the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah the money part for sure.

  20. Just back away slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  21. While I think everyone accepts that nobodies thoughts should ever be considered a crime, the idea that there's "nothing wrong" with the desire to hurt and abuse children is pretty bad, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fair enough. That was poorly worded. Now I'm off to go fap to Bataille and TMNT.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Fapping to TMNT I can get behind.

    ReplyDelete
  24. They're talking about the homophobe world champ who's gone on anti gay and semi racist rants in real life and on the twitters

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow, what an idiot. Even if it was in character, which I suspect it wasn't, there's no need to go there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Cartoon April = Damn, Girl

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jay Brusco is a homophobic asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's really weird they went back to him as champ even if all the circumstances around it made sense. (Elgin's visa expired and they were made about the PWG thing; Cole was supposed to win at FB, but his shoulder was too badly injured.)

On the other hand, I don't feel like everyone has to agree with my values. Like, a guy can be a homophobe and I can still enjoy his wrestling. I don't need to know the values of the wrestlers to enjoy their work. I think that's where Briscoe really messed up...by going on social media and expressing his values. He seems to have learned from that mistake, though, and shouldn't that be a good thing?

I dunno...I'm really conflicted over Briscoe as champ. I don't like it and find it hard to watch with him as champ. I wish they'd go with someone else.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What's the motivation behind keeping a guy like that around and worse making him your champion? It's not like there's even a cynical "Well he brings in money" argument because ROH don't make any money.

    ReplyDelete
  30. he's a face though!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Relationships between 2 consenting adults is perfectly but that's where people like Feinstein run into trouble. There is no society on earth that will condone his attractions.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The motivation is allegedly the Briscoes have always been loyal to ROH and Jay Briscoe is a good friend of Carey Silken, the old owner and the guy still running ROH. Silken and his wife are major supporters of civil rights for homosexuals and he's donated a lot of money to those causes. He and Briscoe had some talks over what happened and Silken thought he deserved a second chance.

He became champion a second time because Elgin *really* pissed off everyone in ROH and they had to get the belt off him as soon as possible. His next match was with Jay Briscoe and Briscoe and Cole have a great, epic feud. So, the idea was to transition the belt from Elgin to Cole using Briscoe because who cares if he's hurt by the loss? Then Cole seriously messed up his shoulder and they were kinda stuck with Briscoe. So, that's the mess they have now.

  33. Ring of Honor is awesome. Used to not think anything of it but watched an episode recently and was hooked! They even made me like AJ Styles! I don't know why I didn't before, but I do now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmm, okay. I'll be honest, I know very very little about ROH.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I recommend going to YouTube and searching for "The Briscoes promote interracial gay sex DVD".

I think it was done before Jay started ranting, but what's happened since makes it a lot funnier.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wait, Cary's not gay?

    ReplyDelete
  37. My opinion on this whole thread, in four words.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A History of ROH Stupidity:

The Christopher Street Connection (vs Carnage Crew especially)
The crowd chanting for Bobby Dempsey to man up and have sex with an unconscious Allison Danger during Larry Sweeney's talk show
    JAY BRISCOE~!
Maria being assaulted and forced to kiss random baby faces, because SLUT!

Yeah, ROH has kind of always been run by cavemen, and booked for cavemen.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The crowd chanting for Bobby Dempsey thing completely turned me off of ROH for a while. That was horrible.

Jay Briscoe...I'm still not wild about that. But I have confidence it's going somewhere.

The Maria thing...there's a LOT more story there. That's a bit out of context. I'm not thrilled with the misogyny of ROH, though. I could add a lot more to your list.

    ReplyDelete
  40. He might be. I may be mistaken about him having a wife. I'm not sure what his orientation is. I know he has a partner.... I also know at the very least he's extremely pro-gay rights. I honestly don't know or care if he's gay or not. All I know is he was *really* hurt by Jay Briscoe's comments and he's since forgiven Briscoe. That was actually the major point of contention...how deeply hurt Carey was by Briscoe's comments.

I still have issues with Briscoe as champ even if I can understand the circumstances. But I also think they should be allowed to make anyone they want champ.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jay Briscoe should have been fired on the spot when he posted that homophobic tweets, ROH Champion or not. I lost a lot of respect for the company when that happened.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It was Carey Silken's idea to have Briscoe go away for a while so cooler heads could prevail. I dunno...I don't agree with Briscoe in any way, but should a guy be fired for having different values? I'm not comfortable with that, either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "inevitably you see someone saying they won't watch it because of someone being a "bigot.""

    someone = Thebrazilianpsycho, every time

    ReplyDelete
  44. You can think whatever you want about whoever you want. You can also express those thoughts publicly and if they're as gross and awful as Briscoe's, your employer can and should decide to cut ties with you because nobody should want someone like that representing their company.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So, employers should be forced into agreeing to a sense of values? I don't agree. I think employers should be able to hire and fire anyone for any reason they want as long as they're not discriminating against a certain group. Like, I think ROH should be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they wish to continue Briscoe's employment. Each member of the audience should also be allowed to determine whether or not they wish to support a company employing somrone like Briscoe.

Basically, I think everyone, wrestlers, companies, fans, can all make up their own minds as to who they wish to support and why. I don't think anyone should be forced into accepting the values of anyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Holy sh... I just looked up the Bobby Dempsey thing on YouTube, and that was disgusting.

Yeah, wrestling and rape! That's the next step to the masses!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Has anyone else seen the clips of Colonel DeBeers going really overboard in a different promotion on his dislike for blacks?

    ReplyDelete
  48. If pedophilia is an inherent quality, I feel a lot of sympathy towards pedophiles, as long as they don't actually molest children.

Imagine if you were attracted to a 'type' that, if you were to act on those attractions, would be immoral and illegal? That'd be a horrible position to live in. There are people that actually trying to offer support and therapy for pedophiles in an attempt to regulate their feelings, and good on them for that.

Also, plenty of child molesters aren't pedophiles. Rape isn't about sex, rape is about power.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Who is he racist towards?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Speaking of homophobic bullshit.

Anybody seeing the backlash against Darren Young for supporting Manny instead of Mayweather due to Floyd's homophobia? Apparently Young is an attention seeking jerk for publicly not supporting a celebrity due to the celebrities bigotry.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is what I point to when people say Gabe Sapolsky is a genius.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's way past time to dump Jay Briscoe as champion, as a face anyway. He's not sympathetic and acts more like the type of arsehole that would hit a guy in the face with a bottle because he didn't like the way he looked. ROH should do something with AJ while he's hot.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Darren Youngs supporting this guy?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I like Jay Briscoe in the ring but there was no one else it could have gone on? Jay Lethal maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Has Mark Briscoe ever said or done anything bigoted, other than when they used to wear the Rebel flag stuff? Seems like he gets thrown under the bus with his brother a lot. Funny enough I think Mark could catch Vince's as an unintelligible hillbilly gimmick doing his Redneck Kung Fu.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Better than the domestic abusing Mayweather, I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was there live for it. I was too stunned to boo it as I should have.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Fuck the pair of them. Glad they will knock the shit out of each other, let's hope it goes the distance.

    ReplyDelete
  61. When I used to go to ROH shows, I'd boo them. I told the All-Night Express to "beat them like the north beat the south." Because no company should have a good'ol boy face character.
Also, Briscoe is reprehensible and shouldn't be near the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree it's time to get the title of Jay (and they do too, he was supposed to lose to BOTH Elgin and Cole before other issues came up) but dump him as a face? the crowds go nuts for him at EVERY show. Turn him heel and his cheers stay exactly the same.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I really avoid finding out any of Shawn Michaels views on...anything because it sucks that he's the Goat and my favorite and we almost certainly share few values.

Don't know what that says about my commitment to said values

  64. A pro boxer who's a shitty person?

Mark is too loveably stupid to be mad at for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  68. People still make a big deal about the Rebel flag? Really? I don't exactly have one hanging around my house anywhere myself, (and I'm Southern) but still.

I know Mark Briscoe once went off on Twitter about how he'd shoot anyone who tried to put the idea of homosexuality into his kids' heads, so there is that.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh, that's all we need, Social Justice Warriors in professional wrestling.

Might make for an interesting gimmick, perhaps... heel, naturally...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jay Briscoe said that. By all accounts, Mark doesn't seem to engage in discussions about such issues.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Shawn Michaels job was to entertain you with his wrestling. If he did that, who cares what his values are? I've never been faced with a difficult moral quandary and thought, "What does Shawn Michaels think? Is there any way I can get to Shawn for his opinions??"

    ReplyDelete
  72. The rebel flag shorts were largely from the angle where Homicide was the savior of ROH and Cornette couldn't accept a person of color being the face of ROH.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The word has been AJ doesn't want the belt because he can't be at every ROH show.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh Jesus. You're one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yeah, believe it or not we don't all want "social justice" being preached to us at all times. Just let wrestling be wrestling and keep the lectures about "privilege" out of it. Ok? Ok.

    ReplyDelete
  76. One of what, exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  77. But is it about ethics in game journalism?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Son, the last piece of "game journalism" I read was a Jeff Rovin book containing cheat codes for Metroid. Try again?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm gay. And proudly southern! So...would you presume to tell me what to think about the fact that Briscoe's comments offended me in two distinct ways? I know I went on about keeping social justice up-thread, but I don't consider "simply being a decent person to your fellow man" as being "social justice."

As for employers...Any employer, be they a company or person, has the right to project a certain image for their business. If an employee says or does something that runs counter to that image the employer most certainly has the right to terminate their employment. If ROH found Briscoe's comments to be at odds with their company's image they wouldn't wrong to fire him. Now ROH obviously doesn't feel that way, so they kept him on. Still, it's the right of the paying consumer to decide that hey, they don't have to like their decision so they won't watch.

And in all of this? I just laugh at the fact that WCW, good ole' boy 'resslin, was the company willing to push visible minorities while the Yankee WWF/E couldn't even put the secondary world title on Booker T without turning him into a cartoon character.

    Brilliant. Blood brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  80. He won't, because he's got nothing to come back at you outside of GamerGate. Hell, I'm not even a gamer. I do know a bit about it though, so I'll toss this one Dougie's way. Just to keep it sporting.

  81. People that use that term are too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Thank you, kind sir, for I have absolutely no fucking clue what any of that twaddle is about, and I'm sure I would not so much as yawn if both sides were to be immolated in nuclear fire.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Some people who play way too much video games started telling other people who play too much video games about what virtual video game chicks should or shouldn't do and then there was yelling and then Law and Order made a really bad but really funny episode about it.

I think that's about it. Either way you're much better off having avoided all that crap.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Exactly. People need to grow the hell up and stop trying to be thought police.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anytime I hear "privilege", I'm inclined to swing a fish over my head like Max Power.

  86. Ali didn't beat his wife, right?

I don't think I could take it if he did.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I was the guy who wrote in. Thanks to all the commenters who cleared it up. Guess ROH won't be getting any of my money anymore. Of course I've never paid them any money anyway so I doubt they'll notice.
