Brock vs. Reigns: Bomb or Fizzle?

Hey Scott,

How badly do you feel WM fans will turn on the the Brock/Reigns match? Do you think if will be Brock/Goldberg writ large on the main stage or HHH/Orton, with fans filing out after the beginning staredown? I kinda have high hopes that somehow Pat comes in and turns this match into a surprise masterpeice somehow, but all things considered, I feel it'd be equally historic if the thing firebombs out of control.

 thoughts?

I think it'll fizzle.  They're gonna give HHH/Sting and Undertaker all the smoke and mirrors needed, and the IC title trainwreck is probably gonna open the show at ****1/2 or more, so it's likely that after four hours the crowd is going to be burned out and in no mood for Reigns, but not actively hostile.  HHH/Orton is a good comparison point, I think.

  1. Could Brock vs Batista have been good, had it happened last year?

The best thing that Lesner and Reigns could do is go back and watch the 07 Undertaker/Batista matches.

That match was an excellent big man match, probably the most fun match of that show. There was really no question that Cena was going to beat Michaels, which kind of lessened the fun of that particular match.

    ReplyDelete
  4. You think the I-C title is gonna be ****1/2? I don't know, there's way too many guys in there. I think it will be a fun match obviously but not at that level.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think fan apathy will be more likely than any hostile reaction.

  8. YankeesHoganTripleHFanMarch 8, 2015 at 10:30 AM

Really the whole series of matches between them was good. If those two can pull that off I don't see any reason why Brock and Reigns can't produce something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  9. MITB matches have hit that mark before.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Problem with the IC title match is that I really don't care who wins. The biggest comparison would be the MITB ladder match. That match is seen as who the WWE thinks who should be the next guy on top. All of these guys in the IC match are guys who have won the title before and, after he wins the title will be put into lame feuds and lose every non-title match.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yea, but I'm not feeling this one, especially if they overload on too many guys.

I wonder when they put the IC title match on and will it fuck the flow of the PPV up if DBry doesn't win?

To me it's not about who wins. It's what they do with them after they win.

Watching the Triple H/Cena match from Wrestlemania. You can tell that Hunter is having a blast playing the heel with the crowd cheering him.

  18. I would love to see a bomb of epic proportions. And even with that I don't think this company will change direction.

I want to watch wrestling. But I won't do that without a decent product that doesn't insult the fanbase that built it

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does anyone even care about it at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  20. At first I thought this would be full on Brock Goldberg redux but after seeing the crowds recently I think they'll just be sitting on their hands, which is worse. Having a predictable main event like this is so dull. We know what's happening and it's going to be forced and boring

    ReplyDelete
  28. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonMarch 8, 2015 at 10:43 AM

The problem is the IC title is seen as a demotion. Itks the Brie Bella of titles.

DBry could be used to elevate the title. That would prove his value. if he gets it i want him to turn into a workhorse champ. If that is not the case then don't put it on him.

I'm HOPING for a massive clusterfuck, something like a Bash '91 show but with good wrestling this time so it's actually fun to watch rather than just interesting-at-first-but-quickly-turning-depressing. It's probably going to just be very quiet and lame and just fizzle out though, yeah. But a fun twist on Bash '91 is what I'm hoping for.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Watching Game Change again (from the beginning this time).

I think Palin's personal weakness seems to be pride. She takes so much pride in everything that she can't divorce herself from all that's she's done, legitimately accomplished, and her beliefs. Her other major weakness is lack attention to details and only seeing the small things.

To borrow the SNL term, she wasn't ready for prime-time back in 08. And then her pride destroyed her as a serious candidate.

Unless Sting uses his old WCW Crow music, yes.

  33. Someone on Reddit proposed writing Lana off for her movie by having her break Rusev's heart, and then he goes on to discover all of the great things about America with Bayley.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Definitely a huge missed opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I dunno. Triple H had his working boots on last year, he's facing his childhood idol's arch rival this year and Meltzer says Sting's been hitting the gym pretty seriously (though that's been said before).

I think with smoke and mirrors to patch the holes, it'll be good enough. Not HHH/Bryan, not ****+, but plenty entertaining for a part-timer vs. a retiree.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Lukewarm" MrJustinBMarch 8, 2015 at 10:46 AM

One and only thing I dig about this match, it's been a long time since someone won their first wwf/e world title at Mania. That's kinda neat. I feel like that used to be a thing. Savage, Warrior, Yoko (...for a sec) Shawn, Austin, Stevie Richards, Batista... Been a while since that's happened.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Theberzerker, #1 HUSS CHOMPIONMarch 8, 2015 at 10:46 AM

Even if the actual match turns out way better than expected (kinda like HBK/Flair from WM24), one flop of Sting's straw man hair over his bald spot and one look at his old man frame it's going to feel real sad real fast.

That would be an exact replica...not what I said. I said a twist on the show, a huge disaster and embarrassment but one that's actually fun to watch. Bash '91 is torturous after a while despite how historically fascinating it is. I want a show that's a disaster but still fun to watch b/c of the good wrestling and...uh...well that's it really.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not knowing anything could have been fixed. But she didn't have time, or the desire to do so. The movie (being a movie and all that), shows her unable and unwilling to work with the campaign people, as well as not taking their advise and focusing on trivial matters like answering emails instead of studying up on learning what Couric was going to ask.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Biff Kensington Has a PosseMarch 8, 2015 at 10:54 AM

When he finally turns, provided he's not 50 and unable to work at the same level, he'll be the biggest heel of the last decade easy. They could make serious bank on a heel turn if done properly.

  60. Hence the pride and lack of attention to detail.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Probably. He's sprinkled his promos with digs at his own character over the years. I remember him goofily telling AJ that he's the master of bathroom jokes and juvenile humor when she tried to hit him with a PG "tiny dick" insult.

    And self-deprecation isn't Cena's schtick.

  82. They also did a pathetic level of vetting on her. They wanted Hutchinson but didn't want to run someone from Texas again. McCain wanted Lieberman which was never going to fly, so they basically picked her out of a hat.

    ReplyDelete
  92. John Edwards. What a sleazebag. I thought he was pretty cool at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Yes, but Lieberman became estranged from his own party after he lost the Democratic primary in 2006. He's BFF with McCain and endorsed him early on in the primary.

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is what I said the other day. People don't hate Reigns, they just aren't feeling it with him. They aren't going to boo Brock any more than they have in his last 3 matches, even knowing he's leaving. Unless the show has been really terrible up to that point, and/or the two put on a terrible match, it's going to be heatless with Reigns getting a mild pop when he wins. Rollins coming out and cashing in the briefcase afterwards would get a larger reaction than anything in the match itself.

    ReplyDelete
  95. People still hold onto that McCain/Lieberman ticket as being a good idea, but they polled it and it was utter death, right?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm gonna toot my horn here, but the minute I saw Edwards in the 2004 Democratic primary, I knew he was headed for a scandal. He screamed Bill Clinton-lite.

  107. The streak is dead, but Taker isn't.

John Cena should end the Undertaker. Just murder the guy with chair shots and going through tables. Absolutely destroy him.

You set this up a couple months in advance, have the whole thing built around "respect" and have Cena go ballistic halfway through the match.

And cult is right, you have him do the one foot pin and "You can't see me" and watch the money roll in.

And if you can, you have him retire Sting similarly.

Heel Cena can only work if you eliminate the Authority from the spotlight.

  133. Aw fuck. I've just realised that when Cena retires as a wrestler he's going to be the authority figure on Raw forever.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Even for the rest of the league it has to be 50/50 at best. Big time free agents are a sucker's bet.

Chris Johnson shot in Florida, reportedly.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Football or baseball?

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yeah, sports in general, teams overpay for past performance on guys most likely heading into the down turns of careers, but it's sad. I was trying to google dolphins free agent signings and dozens of "biggest dolphin free agent busts" type articles came up.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Drew Brees
    Reggie White

    Anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  139. See, you obviously get wrestling.

Big Show is so large it's right there in the name!

And Kane has a million gimmicks that he can ease back into at anytime, plus he's a dentist!

You've gotta keep those guys strong.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Not even guys they got shunned on or couldn't close the deal. The ones they signed and bombed out on. Joey Porter, Gibril Wilson, Culpepper to a lesser degree

    ReplyDelete
  141. YankeesHoganTripleHFanMarch 8, 2015 at 11:30 AM

As a fellow Giant fan I have to ask. Why didn't you want him?

    ReplyDelete
  142. I meant successful big ticket free agent signings in general

    ReplyDelete
  143. Was Brees that big time though? I'd put him in mid level FA category.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Wallace more recently.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I would say go. He got a big time contract.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Brees only got 12 mil in guaranteed money on his first deal. He was only a decent QB coming off of a major injury before the Saints.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Palin had a naivety and folksiness that could have genuinely been an attraction to the ticket, and I think that's what the McCain people thought they were getting. I still remember watching TV live when they announced she was his pick. All the news channels were like "who?" The only info they had on her was she was the Governor of Alaska and under an ethics investigation. Not a good start. Then she gave that first speech and a star was born. But then you saw her talking to people and it started to sink in that all she had was that persona. She basically played a character to cover up that she had very little knowledge about things, just spouted popular right-wing platitudes... there just wasn't anything there. She certainly still has her fans to this day, but that Couric interview killed her dead. She's like a college student who couldn't even bother to memorize enough answers to skate by on a test: she figured she could bluff her way out if taking it altogether. Well her bluff failed. I mean, Jesus--couldnt name *one* newspaper or magazine that she read, then tried to play that off as a "gotcha!" question...

    ReplyDelete
  148. ...ahhh, yeah. Eh, Giants-centric but Pierce/Plax/McKenzy got them a ring. Wes Welker's up there too or Deion Niners/Cowboys

    Afternoon thread is up.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Just in general that money in this sport spooks me. On the other hand, dude's an asshole and better than 50/50 odds he Haynesworths on this contract

    ReplyDelete
  151. He would've made a killing if not for the shoulder. The Dolphins were gonna "overpay" for him big time.

    ReplyDelete
  152. YankeesHoganTripleHFanMarch 8, 2015 at 11:43 AM

I agree with you on the money part. But on the other hand they needed a guy that could take on blockers so guys like JPP can do their thing, and frankly the Giants could use some attitude. Unlike Haynesworth by all accounts Suh works his ass off and loves football

    ReplyDelete
  153. That was another thing that did her in quickly. Day one, very first speech, her talk of killing the "Bridge to Nowhere", and the media learning within a day or two that that simply wasn't true. (She had even authorized the paving of the road that led to the bridge.) Or her going on about the previous governor having a private plane when it turned out the state recouped the cost of it by using it for other things; meanwhile she was billing the state for meals and lodging, even on occasions when she'd return to her own home. She really was the most poorly vetted political candidate in modern history.

    ReplyDelete
  154. They might call an audible and have HHH/Sting go on last.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Maybe. I've never been quite able to get a read on what Steph & Hunter really think of him. But clearly he is for all intents & purposes Vince's other son. You've heard the stories of Cena learning Mandarin to help expand WWE in China? Even if he's not a TV character, he will be there behind the scenes for years. As long as Vince is still alive. After Vince dies...?

    ReplyDelete
  167. They could've easily built this Mania on USA vs. Russia, Cena vs. Rusev, by going all patriotic and getting guys like Hogan and Slaughter involved and in Cena's corner.

Of course, WWE runs with "Old Grizzled Vet vs. Young Heel Who Refuses to Give Him a Rematch" instead, because WWE.

  169. One big time FA signing COULD'VE paid off for the Dolphins, but they didn't pull the trigger. Thanks, Nick Saban, who dat!

  170. "Ohhhh, okaaaaay...everyone see my arm's getting twisted behind my back here-uh?"

    ReplyDelete
  171. I don't know why they haven't run something like that gimmick before. The company travels to new cities all the time, how come you can't give some guy a gimmick of being a foreigner who visits the sights of all these different cities?

You can run it as a face or heel gimmick, the heel just goes to 2nd rate attractions and verbally trashes them.

I now really want to see this gimmick that'll never happen.

    Where did he go?

    ReplyDelete
  173. And what the shit? Cena gets kicked in the nuts and is all "Well shucks I couldn't beat Rusev. How about that Battle Royal?" And not "THIS MOTHERFUCKER KICKED ME IN THE NUTS I HAD HIM BEAT GIMME MY REMATCH"

    ReplyDelete
  174. I could have written the above. No interest in Sting/HHH, actively hating idea of UT going over Wyatt (and looking awful in the process) after the streak is already over. Retire already old man.

    ReplyDelete
  175. the fan "backlash" at GAB91 is vastly overstated. Watched it on the network a few months back and was shocked at how normal the crowd was for 90% of the show. Even the reaction in the main event was more muted than I was led to beieve by posters and reviewers over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  176. she was picked because the GOP somehow thought voters were so stupid that HIllary supporters would flock to McCain simply because he had a women VP, despite the fact that she was diametrically oppossed to Hillary on 99.9% of the issues. It was a transparent move and laughably simplistic. McCain wasn't winning either way but it also backfired horribly.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Lot of people like to claim they saw his fall coming and all that (and a few might have, but it's kinda like the million people who now claim to have been at Wilt's 100 point game) but I openly admit I was an Edwards fan and supporter. Unlike HIllary and Obama, Edwards actually talked about specific plans to help the working class and middle class instead of paying lip service (and we know Hillary is bought and paid for almost as much as the GOP by Wallstreet and Obama certainly has shown no desire to take on Wallstreet in 6-7 years). He seemed to me to be someone who "got it" when it came to making real reforms and sensible regulations to improve the lives of the middle 80% of this country instead of the rest who pay all the attention in actual proposals to the bottom 20 and the top 1% while merely paying lip service to the hard working middle.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Very true. They literally unleashed their flacks on TV to say "hey--disgruntled Hillary supporters, look at what we got!" Like having a woman candidate was going to make people switch party affiliations. The level of misogyny, racism and breathtaking stupidity that went into that entire campaign... still unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  181. If the show has been decent overall and they lay out a match that plays to both guys strengths then I can see them snatching a narrow victory from the jaws of defeat. I realize those are both pretty big ifs, but I'm trying to be an optimist these days...

    ReplyDelete
  182. Yeah dont see any smarkfest rebellion during the match. big stadiums harder to get chants going anyway. The next night on raw is when smarkmania will take place

    ReplyDelete
  183. Dont see it. There will be some but by that point most will be burned out or just leave

  189. Really unique spin on a fresh topic. Great question.

    ReplyDelete
  190. You are aware that that's not a documentary, right?

    ReplyDelete
  191. Honestly, the Couric interview did very little damage, SNL is what ruined her. No one gives a fuck about Katie Couric. Voters are idiots and think the Daily Show is a political news outlet.

    ReplyDelete
  192. You wouldn't be a 1%er for long.

  193. Worked at 'Manias 16 (until the very end), and 20-22. It's Big Babyface HHH going on last that doesn't work, as evidenced by 'Manias 18 and 25.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Well, Steph was apparently the one who greenlit his rapper character (which saved his career). HHH seems to be less fond of him, but that might be a combination of jealousy and dislike for his non-traditional colourful character.

    ReplyDelete
  195. Michael Turner is one of the best FA signings ever.

    ReplyDelete
  196. 'Taker's by most accounts a ring general, and really blossomed in the last few years of his full-time career. Lesnar's a gifted physical freak, but he apparently can't call/lead a match. Batista lacked Reigns' youth and sheer agility/athleticism, but he had more experience with different veterans and several great singles matches under his belt by that point.
