Extant's Comics Pull List

It's Wednesday, which means it's new comics day here in the U.S., with new books available in comic shops and online.

This month, DC Comics continues to wrap up storylines in advance of next month's Convergence event and June's mini-relaunch, while Marvel continues its March towards Battleworld.

My pull (and I'm admittedly a DC fanboy, so you won't see too much Marvel on my lists) this week includes the three DC Comics weeklies - Future's End, Earth 2: World's End and Batman Eternal - along with the new issues of Action Comics, Constantine and Coffin Hill, a fun book from Vertigo that in my opinion needs some more love.

Other notable stuff coming out this week: new issues of Star Wars, Walking Dead, Spider-Gwen and Astro City, along with Bill & Ted's Most Triumphant Return.

What does your pull list look like?

In other news, Powers debuted yesterday on PlayStation Plus and Flash and Arrow come back to TV next week.

Anyone else watch the first three episodes of Powers?

I haven't picked up anything new in ages. How is that Spider-Gwen comic? And why does it look like she's wearing slippers?

I watched the three episodes of Powers that debuted on PlayStation Plus yesterday (with new episodes uploaded each Tuesday for the next 7 weeks).

Despite the differences from Bendis and Oeming's comics, I thought the show stood on its own really well, especially Susan Heyward as Deena Pilgrim.

Instead of kicking off the show with the comics story of "Who KIlled Retro Girl?" they seem to be keeping Retro Girl around for a while, which is probably the biggest change to the book so far (outside of Deena Pilgrim being Black).

I'm pretty much hooked and looking forward to the rest of the season. Anyone else watch the available episodes and feel like chiming in?

  14. Yeah but...I'm still seeing that on WWE usually...just not with Kofi Kingston. You certainly do have close finishes, comebacks, ends to feuds, dream matches. All the time. Dream matches are a bit subjective though. I'm super stoked to see if Sting/HHH can make something good. Or Bray/UT. Brock/Reigns has some intrigue to it and I'm looking forward to it to see if its gonna rock or bomb. (Apparently so are many people who just can't admit it.)

We were going to do it in June, but the whole unemployment thing threw a wrench in the works with my health insurance. So we moved up the timeline for the civil ceremony so I can get on her insurance, but we're still doing a party/second ceremony for family and friends at the end of June.

  42. Can't imagine picking up the two non batman weeklies. Especially that Morrison crap. Not getting mine till tomorrow due to snow. Astro City, Batman Eternal, JLU, Ant-Man, FF, New Avengers and Star Wars. Incredibly heavy week for me. A culling is quickly approaching.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm a "Wait for the Trade" guy and money's been tight to pick up much. But most recently, I picked up:

    1) Sex Criminals, Vol. 2 - This is seriously the best comic in the industry right now and you should be ashamed if you're not reading it.

    2) Chew, Vol. 8 - God, I'm going to miss this series when it ends. It's got some of the most hilarious but also right-in-the-feels moments of any comic. Especially the end of this one, which nearly sent me in to a rage.

    3) JLA, Vol. 1 - The first volume of Grant Morrison's run on JLA. I've owned it before (both in single issues and then later trades), but this is the most comprehensive collection to date. I discovered the second volume cheap at Value Village a few weeks ago, too. I'm happy that this collection series goes beyond Morrison's run, too. I can't wait to pick up the Mark Waid volume because it even collects his never before collected JLA: Heaven's Ladder, which was phenomenal.

Only complaint about this particular collection series is that the similar hardcovers had Morrison's JLA: Earth 2 one-shot and the JLA: Classified storyarc

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nice! They're great. If you haven't, I recommend the new 52 Swamp Thing title, as well. At least as far as the Rotworld arc where he teams up with Animal Man (another amazing title). That's as far as I read of both titles, but they're both great.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarMarch 11, 2015 at 1:45 PM

They resized Heaven's Ladder to fit in a standard collection? That was one of those oversized books originally, wasn't it? I have it either around my apartment somewhere or up with the rest of my comics with my parents. It's been forever since I've read it.

I hope that you find that new job soon so that you can continue to fund your comic habit and continue to blog about it.

Also, I have a collection of All-Star Squadron, which ran from 1981 to 1987 for 67 issues and 3 annuals. It also includes 3 JLA issues from a JLA-JSA-All Star Squadron crossover. I'm missing issues 47 (which is a Todd McFarlane and a Dr. Fate origin issue) and I'm missing the final issue of 67, which is a re-telling of a JSA story.

Anyone want this? All in good to mint condition.

  53. I dont feel its egotistical.

If you are a paying fan your voice should matter.

It doesnt but it should. Thats the reality.

I feel that if you get over, no matter bass ackwards you come across, mgmt should push you.
Mgmt should also have their pet projects as well.

    Thats where the problem lies.

If im vince and I like reigns and his thighs, im going to do whatver it takes to get him over. Im putting money behind him in hopes of a return on the investment. Now the return has to justify the push, so tyats more money dumped into someone who is not getting as over as hoped.

Meanwhile this other guy has been given nothing and is betting my pets reaction.

Do I abandon my project and run with the other guy or do I let it play out cuz you never know?

sorry for the tl dr, but my tangent I feel is just the tip of iceberg when it comes to bryan vs reigns from a business aspect. I dont claim to know anything but I feel this is just a small scenario on why someone is pushed.

I was really pissed when they ended the Animal Man title, because it was a great story with fantastic art. I felt the same way when they cancelled Frankenstein. Some really great, weird stuff that started with the New 52 got left behind really quick.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ditto on Frankenstein. That was a fun comic. Same for OMAC. Anything that wasn't already a big, established name was on the chopping block pretty soon. Sad, really.

Which is why I wish I had more hope for some of the weird titles coming from this upcoming soft reboot. I'm sure it'll be great, but I doubt Black Canary or Starfire will make it to 20 issues.

    Not Brooklyn, Queens.

Usually, I buy my comics every week online and read them on my tablet, because I just don't have the space to store new comics and usually don't have the time to hit up a comic shop. When I DO go to a comic shop, though, I usually hit up Midtown Comics in Times Square (which was apparently visited by George Lucas yesterday!) or the shop that's connected to the last stop on the Q in Astoria, Silver Age Comics. That's probably where I'll go to get my Free Comic Book Day stuff in May.

I use Comixology, which is great, except you can read the books in-app, but you can't buy them in-app if you're on an iOS or Android device. You can on a Microsoft device, because no one ever updates these apps.

Otherwise, you have to go to the Comixology website, buy them there, and then download them onto your device.

Apparently, when Amazon bought Comixology, they decided they didn't want to give Apple any of their money and switched the purchasing process. Not a huge pain in the ass, but an extra step none-the-less.

Much less glamorous of course, but it might had led to them being less marks for themselves.

  107. Wow, from Caliber's editor to the main page, you're moving up in the world Ferrari!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Norman Smiley will always be over in my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I fell out of East of West a while ago, but I can't really remember why. I love love love Nightly News and Pax Romana, but (imo), Hickman's later creator-owned stuff hasn't hit that level for me.

You know, I wanted to do another mid-1990s WCW column, so maybe one day I can work my way up to the big leagues.

THE BOYHOOD DREAM HAS COME TRUE!

  112. One thing I like about Comixology is that for some of the books (mostly my Image stuff, I think), you can download a PDF or CBR file.

    ReplyDelete
  113. NINJA KICK BULLSHIT

    ReplyDelete
  114. That. I ain't even mad anymore, I'll just watch NXT every week, go to Mania, and fuck everything else.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I agree. We all expected Reigns to win the Rumble but the way it was done and the follow up has made everyone look awful.

    ReplyDelete
  116. My dad was a banker. I'm surprised that isn't exactly what he thought I should use my money on.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I say this with all due respect, but I think it's kinda funny you say that while still using a Parallax user pic.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Bill and Ted is written by Brian Lynch who hasn't done a lot of stuff that I'm familiar with. He did some of the idw tmnt stuff but that's all I know.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Oh yeah, I've bought several of the indie game Humble Bundles. Severely expanded my Steam library with very little money.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I don't see how this booking would get Vince hard, though.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I only buy trades.

    Take THAT, Dan Slott.

    ReplyDelete
  122. He's going to main event a lot of pre-shows and I for one can't wait :)

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'm curious if anyone has noticed that my avatar is a picture of Wolverine by the notorious Greg Land in which he has blatantly traced a photo of Triple H.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Slott has something against trades? I can't stand him in general, but I hadn't heard about the trades thing.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarMarch 11, 2015 at 4:05 PM

He went on an anti-waiting for the trades tirade a while back, saying it was hurting monthly books.

    ReplyDelete
  126. No, no they can't.

    ReplyDelete
  127. We've given up hope.

I'm waiting to be disappointed by Sami Zayn's ascension to and burial on three main roster.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You must mean Bobby Lindsay

    ReplyDelete
  129. Final Crisis didn't reboot shit.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I feel what you are saying, but they have 300 hours of tv per week. Hell, they even have separate shows. They can push more than one guy at a time. Jobbing Bryan to push Reigns is stupid when it's completely unnecessary

    ReplyDelete
  131. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarMarch 11, 2015 at 4:22 PM

It was meant as a tonal shift that didn't really pan out.

  132. Rockin' Todd ParkerMarch 11, 2015 at 4:23 PM

He needs to go to NXT. Isn't Samoa Joe headed there?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Of all the places I believe Shamus was from, the Bronx would only be above Bradenton, FL. Of course, Boston would be number 1 cause that's where all Irish people go. That and South Bend, IN

    ReplyDelete
  134. That's impossible. If he was Triple H, he would have already taken over the Marvel Universe, and be about halfway done with DC.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I am convinced they are keeping Bryan there in case of emergency, as someone stated below. You know, just in case Lesnar walks....just in case there are 10,000 empty seats at Mania....just in case ratings keep plummeting.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Did Land trace back in his CrossGen days? Because all the ones I can recall were with Marvel.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I hate Marvel management and personnel in general. Wacker loves to troll on CBR.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Everybody keep doing it then.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Awesome. Jokes on him, anyway. I haven't bought a Spider-Man title since before One More Day, anyway. He hasn't gotten a cent of my money.

    ReplyDelete
  140. It doesn't change the validity of the comment, though...

    ReplyDelete
  141. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarMarch 11, 2015 at 5:28 PM

Well, I would call this a successful first outing!

    ReplyDelete
  142. LOL, good point.

    ReplyDelete
  143. What? Smiley was majorly over.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I think the WWE also knows that Bryan isn't going to put up much of a fight. He has stated before that he just takes what they give him and makes the best of it. This isn't a Stone Cold/HBK situation where he would just say "That sucks, I'm not doing it" and force their hand.
Bryan seems pretty grateful to have gotten his Wrestlemania Moment and now he'll just keep moving along.

    ReplyDelete
  145. You just snark sniped a fellow snark sniper!

    ReplyDelete
  146. "Just"? I did that almost a day ago!

    ReplyDelete
  147. I can't wait for Reigns/Brock. I'm super curious about how it will go, probably for the wrong reasons

    ReplyDelete
  148. My current monthly pull list, ongoings and minis, is: Angel & Faith, Astro City, Avengers, Avengers World, Bill & Ted's Most Triumphant Return, Buffy TVS Season 10, Deadpool, Django/Zorro, Gotham Academy, Green Lantern, GL Corps, GL: New Guardians, Hawkeye (the Fraction/Aja one), Howard the Duck, Justice League, JL 3000, New Avengers, Red Lanterns, Return of the Living Deadpool, Saga, Secret Six, Sex Criminals, Sinestro, The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, The Fade Out (or anything by Brubaker & Phillips) & the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Plus any new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen material. I read a lot of other series in trades.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Daniel Bryan is too small for Vince. On the hierarchy of the WWE, the only status worse than being too small is Benoit status.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I was going to trade-wait it, but it was a light week for me so I picked up #1. And I'm glad I did, as it's pretty good. It doesn't go too far off base. If you like the flicks, it's safe to say you'll dig the comic.

    ReplyDelete
  151. JL 3000/3001 is so much fun. Seriously one of my favorite current books at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  152. He ripped off Brian Bolland's Joker in "The Killing Joke" something fierce in an issue of JLA.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Who cares about the reason? You're interested.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Well I'm a Marvel kind of guy, specifically Spider-Man related comics. Decided to see what came out today that are in my pulls, and wow way too much. Couldn't make it to the shop today but going tommorow, so here's my list for this week:

    Sonic the Hedgehog #270
    Spider-Man & the X-Men #4
    Spider-Man 2099 #10
    Miles Morales: ultimate Spider-Man #11
    Howard the Duck #1
    Deadpool #43
    Amazing Spider-Man Special #1
    Amazing Spider-Man #16
    Spider-Gwen #2

    ReplyDelete
  155. As for other comics I have in pulls that don't come out this week:
    Transformers
Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye (Still my fav monthly comic right now)
    Squirrel Girl
    Mega-Man
    Sonic Universe
    Gold Digger
    Spider-Woman
Return of the Night of the Living Deadpool
    Rocket Raccoon
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mighty Mutanimals
    The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw
    Usagi Yojimbo (when it returns)

and I think that's it atm.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I found her way hotter than either.

I usually did too. I'm not the biggest blonde fan in the world, though they're too exceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Yup, bought it. $16 for all THAT? Yes please.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Damn -- I wish I'd known. Last week Humble Bundle had a TON of Transformers MtMtE e-comics. I'll be sure to post here when I see something people might like.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I'm super interested in the crowd reactions. I'm not sure that's what the WWE were going for when they booked it.

To elaborate on the above, since it's pre-planned it's ridiculous that 2/3 of the roster aren't over and have an air of "loser" about them, resulting in audience apathy for 2/3 of most cards. That's just ridiculous for something that's pre-planned, especially when compared to eras past when everyone was kept relatively strong and booked smartly enough to keep them over.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I actually did pick it up even though I had all the comics in print form already heh.

    ReplyDelete
  162. It was meant to set up New 'New Gods' stuff, but they gave the event to Morrison and... no-one can follow Morrison. Same problem will happen with Secret Wars 2015: like how can anyone follow Hickman's Avengers run? Dude is straight up dropping the mic every issue with crazy shit.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Eh regardless, im glad you got him, that guy gets me all the time.

The title wasn't on the level of the world title at Wrestlemania 6. The guy holding it was. The IC title went from Honky to Warrior to Rude to Warrior. The belt wasn't any higher status than it was in '91-92 with Perfect/Hart/Bulldog/Michaels. It was just that Warrior, who was ready for the world title, happened to be holding the IC belt going into Mania 6.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Wrestlemania VI was title for title. Hulk Hogan was fighting to win the Intercontinental Title. The titles were equal at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Loser? Harsh.

Yeah look..don't care why you're interested in the match. My girlfriend is really interested in seeing Brock in a speedo. Her kid is interested in seeing Undertaker's entrance. Its irrelevant. You're interested. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Jesus H. Christ this is the most negative review I've ever read. What was that, FIVE DUDs? I don't think you actually know what a "DUD" is...
