Jerry Lawler DVD Listing

Hi Scott, hope you are well.

Well, what do you think? As Meltzer noted, much of it will depend on the quality of the Memphis footage. And putting the Flair match on the Blu-Ray is just nasty. Now that's an enticement.

But that Piper match? Good God. Should have been buried behind Titan Towers in a shoebox decades ago.

Take care.

Jon

That's pretty weak sauce, dude.  Like, we know they have the rights to the empty arena and Kaufman matches because they aired a million times on 24/7, but the Hennig and Von Erich matches when Lawler was past his prime are really the best "rarities" they can pull up?  And then it jumps to 93 and all the crappy WWF matches he had?  There's tons better stuff on the Wrestling Gold collection alone and I'm pretty sure they could write Kit Parker a check for $10 and get the rights to all of that stuff.  This is massively disappointing given all the buildup that Lawler was giving it.

  1. Bret-Lawler at SummerSlam '93 should be on there, not that terrible, terrible KOTR match.

  2. It's complete insanity to not include that Summerslam '93 match. Especially when they include the rest of the feud (interrupting Bret's coronation, wrestling Owen, trolling Helen and Stu during the Bret/Bam Bam match on Raw). But even without that stuff, that match is so fucking fun. And also, that match has never (for some dumb reason) appeared on any of Bret's countless DVDs. GLARING omission from this Lawler set.

  3. Maybe they don't want to give too much attention to the Doink match, which happened beforehand either because Osborne had a falling out with Vince, which is possible or because he's dead.

  4. Way too much WWF / WWE content. Disc 3 might just be the worst disc ever produced by WWE Home Video.
No Austin Idol, no Dutch Mantell. Only one Dundee match. Where are all his clean victories over {INSERT CURRENT OR FUTURE SUPERSTAR HERE}?

  5. Lawler may be one of the 5 or 10 greatest in-ring workers in history, but you're sure not going to see it from this set. Sheesh.

  6. Don't know much about his pre-WWE career, but all the RAW/WWE PPV stuff (i.e. that's already on the Network) makes this collection look pretty weak.

  7. I was going to say the documentary better be good. But, 1 hr 25 minutes tells me they're gonna gloss over a bunch of stuff, probably.

  8. Well WWE DVDs are full of dead people and people that have had falling outs with Vince so I don't think that's the case. But that Bret/Doink segment does go on a while (for another guy's DVD) so I can see that as maybe the reason it's omitted. But they could cut the match up so that most of Bret/Doink is glossed over. I dunno. That match is a personal favorite of mine and it's never gotten it's day on a DVD compilation.

  9. I could've sworn I read a report that said the empty arena match was going to be on there.

  10. It's the very first match on the set.

  11. I get the feeling they're holding out on a lot of the Memphis stuff until they release a set just about Memphis wrestling. I think I read somewhere a couple weeks ago that they finally purchased the rights to the Memphis stuff.

  12. Agree completely. The KOTR match is OK but Summerslam is just tremendous FUN from start to finish. I still remember watching it on VHS way back in the day and just loving it when Bret wouldn't let up with the sharpshooter! It doesn't get talked about much, but in 1993 at least it was quite a hot feud.

  13. Mildly interested in Lawler vs. Undertaker casket match, since I've never seen it. Otherwise, what's the point in doing a Lawler DVD without including more of his old school stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  14. It must've been pretty wild for Lawler, who portrayed a face for who-knows-how-long in Memphis, to play a chickenshit heel in his initial WWF run

  15. I believe the casket match has already been released on a Coliseum Video tape about the Undertaker that they re-released not too long ago on DVD.

  16. Go to Highspots and buy their Classic Memphis series instead. Good stuff!

  17. Not a bad collection for someone who admires Lawler's WWE work.

  18. I'm more interested in the documentary and should be a great one. Interested hearing of his departure and return in 2001 and sure to have plenty of Memphis footage there so long overdue.

  19. I remember the Hennig/Lawler AWA title change being a good match with a hot ending but that may have been the fog of youth.

  20. That's a pretty interesting story. It's all in his book in great detail

  21. Even as a kid I couldn't stand that Piper Lawler match, and back then I'd watch just about anything. I'd watch KOTR94 all the time, but would stop it before the 'Main Event'.

Are we going to get to enjoy more Art Donovan commentary on a DVD release?

  22. I still contend it's the worst WWE PPV main event of all time.

  23. It's so weird to me how Lawler was a top guy in multiple organizations, but I had no conception of this when he came into the WWF because they used him primarily on commentary. Like, I'd read PWI and knew who he was, but seeing him debut behind the desk imprinted him as a non-wrestler in my mind and I never gave him a chance against real wrestlers, like Bret Hart or Roddy Piper. Kind of a shame as those could have been hot matches if Lawler had come in with some semblance of a push. Imagine if they'd used Flair that way when they first brought him in, putting him behind the desk instead of inside the ring. There's another dude who was old but could still go, didn't look physically imposing, but could get it done through dirty tricks.
I remember when they started building Lawler up for his Jake "the Snake" feud by having him squash Aldo Montoya on Superstars, I almost expected The Manowar to get more offense since he was a regular worker taking on a talker. Kind of surprised me to see Lawler portrayed as an actual threat. But it made more sense when I watched the documentary about his Kaufman feud because he came across as a total badass back then.
