Four-Way Tag Match: ***1/2
Andre Battle Royal: ***1/4

HHH vs Sting: **1/2

My thoughts are pretty close to his. Would go higher with Sting/HHH and the main event.
ReplyDeleteIt's like he overrated every match by 1/2 a star. Maybe that's the WM curve.
ReplyDeleteHe was at the show live, which I think skewed his ratings. Glad I'm not the only one who thought Orton Rollins was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteHHH v. Sting was a total DUD though. AndyPG, what were your thoughts?
"Last year Levesque made $1.1 million in executive pay, including
ReplyDeleteincentives, plus another $1.65 million from in-ring performances."
Hunter wrestled 4 matches last year. That means every time he put on the tights he was paid $412,500.
I keep going back to this, that the Network allows them to take advantage of talent even further. I don't see a change, either. WM may be good for a few good vibes, but the structure is still unchanged.
ReplyDeleteMight have to do with the atmosphere. Honestly, it was a very fun show to watch, and everyone there said the crowd was having a blast. Dave has said in the past that a hot crowd will boost ratings in his mind.
ReplyDeleteWasn't all that thrilled with the ladder match or Orton/Rollins. Probably both in the *** range for me, but I'll admit I didnt particulary care about either match and I'm not a huge fan of Orton's in ring work.
ReplyDeleteLOL you still got posting privilege ?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. He said on the latest show that HHH/Sting was not nearly as good on TV as it was live... But that could also be second viewing deminished returns.
ReplyDeleteIt's not what you make, it's what you keep.
ReplyDeleteDale Doback: What is your problem, man?
ReplyDeleteDerek:
My problem? I don't know. I don't have a problem, uh, Dale. In fact, I
have the opposite of a problem. I made over 550K last year. How much
did you make?
Dale Doback: It's not about money.
Derek: It's not about money? Well, for me, it's a little about money, and I made *that* much money last year.
And if guys have to pay their own travel, expenses, etc, then that money dries up REALLY quick.
ReplyDeleteOrton has quietly put together a hell of a WrestleMania resume over the years. The Evolution/Rock N Sock tag, the Undertaker match, WM22 Triple Threat, MITB from 23, Triple Threat from 24, Punk match, a good match with Kane of all people, the main event from 30 and against Rollins.
ReplyDeleteYou had me until Kane
ReplyDeleteJudging by these ratings, WrestleMania XXXI falls somewhere in the WrestleMania XIX range in terms of shows that will be looked back on as a forgotten classic. I don't think the show was as great as these ratings make it out to be, but it was definitely an above-average WrestleMania.
ReplyDeleteHuh. I gave a lot of the exact same ratings Meltzer gave them. Only I think UT/Bray and the Divas match was a bit high.
ReplyDeleteI think I am watching too much wrestling. The other day on ESPN.com there was a headline regarding the Cubs that said "Lester to start opener without Bryant." For a second I swear it said "Lesner to wrestle opening match against Bryan"
ReplyDeleteI imagine that's inclusive of the weekly, ahem, entertainment he provides as as an on-air character through in-ring promos, backstage segments, etc.
ReplyDeleteDude I'm tellin you that Kane match from 28 was better than it had any right to be. They even had a good rematch the next month. No idea why they feuded but it was solid. Getting something good out of Kane counts double in my book!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't go nearly that high on the Ladder match and Orton/Rollins. i thought it was a solid card but definitely wasn't blown away like a lot of people were.
