Eddie and JBL

> Hi Scott,
> Hope all is well.
>
> I'm curious as to why Eddie Guerrero was booked to drop the belt to JBL so soon after winning it in 2004? If I'm not mistaken Eddie was basically the most over babyface on the roster, and JBL was kind of a newly introduced gimmick and his reign ended up being widely panned. Was this a typical case of Vince just choosing to put somebody/gimmick he likes over a smaller, less traditional top babyface that the fans loved? Was JBL getting more heat than I'm imagining? Enough to logically put him over a top babyface business wise? It's genuinely confusing to me because looking back now I'm pretty confused as to why he is anything more than a glorified midcard tag team specialist. I mean... he kinda sucked...
>
> Thanks

Eddie was really burned out as champion, like right away.  He wanted out of that position and I think there was fear that things would go badly if they left the title in him.  Which proved to be a legit concern a year later.  And Vince really loved the JBL character for obvious reasons.

Comments

  1. I remember reading that Guerrero took his title run very personally and felt an immense overwhelming sense of pressure to be what a champion should be, be responsible for the house drawing etc

    ReplyDelete
  2. They should've done a pseudo-documentary on Bradshaw seeking redemption from his previous Satanic lifestyle.

    ReplyDelete
  3. A devil worshipping stockbroker sounds like a great gimmick actually.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep, and there were concerns that Eddie was falling back into his old ways and bad behaviors to cope with the personal pressure he was putting on himself after every percieved "failure" such as a botched spot or a match not getting the reaction Eddiw thouught it should have., as noted.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It seemed like WWE had no set plan for him after the Angle match at Mania, either. I remember him having a mini-feud with the Bashams before moving onto JBL.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I was always surprised by the retroactive Smark love for JBL. His reign was awful and permanently damaged the Smackdown brand.

    ReplyDelete
  7. JBL's reign was panned initially, because "really? Bradshaw is the world champion?," but people came around on him after he started doing some of the best work of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Most of them already do anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've read that Eddie couldn't cope with the pressure of being champ but was fucking Bradshaw the best answer? His reign completely turned me off from smackdown.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Brock - Eddie is still easily a top ten moment / match for me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He had a few funny comedy bits and people somehow equate that with him being good when he wasn't in any shape or form. Having him champ just screamed B-Show.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Don't forget his awesome stable with Orlando Jones and Horseshu

    ReplyDelete
  13. Think about that era. SD was so bereft of talent that Mark Jindrak and Luther Reigns were getting upper midcard pushes.

Who else do you put it on?

Sometimes you have to pick somebody, cross your fingers, close your eyes and pull the lever.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In his book, Bob Holly said that JBL gave Vince a bunch of good stock tips and that's how the JBL gimmick came to fruition and to the main event.

    ReplyDelete
  15. They were trying to build new stars, so that's why they didn't use Undertaker, Angle was in injured and Cena/Mysterio weren't at that level yet.

Their only other reasonable options were Booker T or RVD.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Vince might be a complete dickhole but I think Eddie is one of the very few people he truly cares for and respects. So he was willing to help him out and I'm sure would give him another chance as champion once Eddie feels like he's up for it

    ReplyDelete
  17. Right away? He had the title for nearly five months.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Booker T vs. Guerrero sounds fun on paper but at the time no-one really wanted to see it any more than vs. JBL. I feel with the roster they had and how little they were truly over at the time Guerrero was always going to be on an uphill climb with his title run.

    ReplyDelete
  19. From the present tense in your last sentence, it seems like you might not have been aware. I'm really sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but Eddie Guerrero died nearly ten years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh yeah well duh, I meant while he's still alive

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wasn't John Layfield giving stock tips on the fox business channel BEFORE he became JBL?

Didn't he also write an investment book as well?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yep. That's how he got the JBL gimmick. While we knew him as APA Bradshaw, he was giving Vince stock tips and they decided to turn that into his gimmick when Ron Simmons wanted to retire.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wasn't watching at this time so I have no idea what I'd have felt about a JBL title run in the moment. But at the end he put Cena over pretty strong (their WM21 match was pretty eh but that gruesome I Quit match a month or two later was amazing) so I guess kind of a success?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know, I'm just being a dick.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Is there any site that simply lists all the title defenses of a WWE champion?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I feel like there was something rumored about and Undetaker heel turn vs. Eddy but Mark wouldn't do business. That might have been later in the year though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. (To clarify, this is more in response to the emailer asking why he dropped it so soon, not Scott saying he was burned out "right away." I have no doubts he burned out soon and probably would have held it for longer, and might have even held it for longer than he wanted to.)

    ReplyDelete
  28. PWTorch does kinda.

    He's the list from 2014 http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/Title_Holders_Listing_28/article_75361.shtml#.VSk3oq10yUk

    ReplyDelete
  29. Beyond 2 PPV matches there were plenty of pretty underwhelming JBL main event PPV matches along with the countless hours of TV time given to him too. The TV stuff was really hard to sit through due to being so boring.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cheers Adam, You're on a roll today with helpful info

    ReplyDelete
  31. OJ and the Bashams.

Reigns was part of Team Angle.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Vaguely connected point.
Vince saw Raw and how over Randy Orton & Batista were starting to become as HHH's flunkies, so he decided to make lightening strike twice.

Let's get a muscle bound lunk and a smaller faster guy and put him with a top heel on Smackdown. Talent doesn't matter any muscle bound lunk and smaller faster guy will do.

Hence we got Team Angle V2.0 with Mark Jindrak & Luther Reigns taking up tv time.

    ReplyDelete
  33. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/three-former-wrestlers-sue-wwe/ar-AAaJvhf?ocid=iehp

I have never heard of two of these guys.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know I've posted this before but it always needs to be pointed out how stupid this lawsuit is.

I looked up the wrestling record for Sakoda, Luther Reigns and Russ McCullough who are suing WWE over being "forced to harm themselves" wrestling.

Sakoda has 21 WWE matches . He was wrestling for at least 2 years before joining WWE.

Reigns has 40 WWE matches. He was wrestling for at least 7 years before joining WWE.

McCullough has 7 WWE matches. He was wrestling for at least 2 years before joining WWE.

I wonder how many other wrestling companies they have also decided to sue?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Didn't JBL win the title because at the time he recently did the Nazi salute to gain heat in a house show in Germany? It drew a lot of criticism on JBL, but Vince loved it as he saw JBL as the innocent wrestler being persecuted by the big bad outside world ( aka. How Vince views himself). Plus JBL was one of the good old boys backstage and Vince was never keen on Eddie to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Vince loved and respected Eddie quite a bit. They were both in tears when he hugged him backstage after winning the title.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This guy. I like his opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I thought he was already champion by then.

    ReplyDelete
  39. No he did that before being champion.

    ReplyDelete
  40. What does amount of matches matter? If Sakoda, Reigns and McCullough got concussions or injuries in WWE rings and the company still pushed them out to wrestle when knowing they're hurt, wouldn't they still be culpable?

The issue is whether it can be proven. If the aforementioned wrestlers had documented injuries before and after wrestling in WWE, then it's hard to determine the guilt of WWE's physicians.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Reigns was likely injured during his stellar run as Horseshu

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't think Scott ever reviewed their Cyber Sunday match.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Vince was probably workin' the cameras, that sly ol' carnie...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hah. Funny that I wasn't the only one thinking of the lizard sketch.

  47. CruelConnectionNumber2April 11, 2015 at 9:28 AM

    Smackown 04-07 is like TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  48. "TV cancer" I love it. I enjoyed his bloodbath with Eddie, and the "I Quit" match with Cena. One of the few times Cena was actually getting cheered as a face.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Let us remember the amazing feud he had with both Kurt Angle and Big Show, that spent the entire time focusing on Diva Search losers Joy Giavanni and Amy Weber constantly fighting each other.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Guys, tell me if I'm remember this right.

After JBL won the title from Eddie, they had a TV cage match where Eddie frog-splashed him from the top of the cage and JBL kicked out.

    Did this happen?

    ReplyDelete
  51. ThebrazilianpsychoApril 11, 2015 at 9:29 AM

    Then Edge/Taker save Smackdown.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That barb wire cage match with Big Show was god awful.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes, the only reason he won was because Angle interfered dressed as a luchador.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Haha, that Big Show title loss where he took sooooo long to get out of the cage and JBL crawled out from under the ring made Show look like such a dumbass.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The Barbwire never got used, it was such bullshit marketing.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think JBL cut his arm and Show used it to get color, that was it. Flair and Hogan used in more in their barb wire cage match.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Another great moment from that reign; Eddie frog splashing the Undertaker about seven times in a row and Undertaker sitting up and no selling them.

    Fuck that moment.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I just wished they built him up a little. I mean, give the guy a LITTLE credibility as a challenger before putting the title on him.

    ReplyDelete
  59. One of the greatest title win moments ever. Cole and Taz were really good calling the final sequence, too.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't remember that! That actually happened?!

    ReplyDelete
  61. ThebrazilianpsychoApril 11, 2015 at 9:34 AM

If Goldberg hadn't interfered that match was gonna be *****.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Speaking of that JBL/Cena match, I had to look up what show that was on. Holy lord, Judgment Day '05 sounds like a pretty awesome show.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The Goldberg interference is perfect. I don't understand why you don't get this

    ReplyDelete
  64. I thought it was fine and set up would should have been a great match at Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Undertaker was unbearable until about 2007. I remember there being a fatal four way at the December pay per view with him, JBL, Eddie and Booker and as soon as it was announced I knew JBL retains by pinning Booker or Eddie.

    ReplyDelete
  66. It also adds a sense of drama to the match, especially with Brock kicking out

    ReplyDelete
  67. I remember that Eddie was seen as a long-term top guy while Benoit's reign was meant to be a short token reign. But Eddie couldn't take the pressure. Ironically I'd bet part of the reason for Smackdown business declining with him on top was due to his first challenger being Bradshaw.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Wasn't that kicked off when Angle saw "Big Show's Special Friend" in the shower and Show got mad?

    ReplyDelete
  69. It took them years to realize Undertaker was better off as a part timer and special attraction.

    ReplyDelete
  70. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighApril 11, 2015 at 9:46 AM

Eddie put a ton of pressure on himself as champion. Obsessing over attendance, and ratings. Probably a good idea to take the pressure off of him.

    ReplyDelete
  71. So is this our daily update thread? Because we gotta talk about the Christian family band and that brawl they had with police in Arizona. I'm still not sure what I just watched, but it was insane.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I thought the **** match thread had turned into the daily thread.

We really need the official daily threads up quicker.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ways they tried to get heat on JBL: they had him grab Eddie's mother at one point and she has a "heart attack".

Another great moment: the Wave during his title match with Taker at Summerslam. That's right, fans were so bored they were doing the Wave.

    ReplyDelete
  74. MNM vs. Hardcore Holly & Charlie Haas was an exceptionally fun opener. Not a classic or anything but that crowd were just so hot and you could see it motivate Haas and step it up.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The amount of matches definitely matter. Rollins used an ice pack after his 3rd match. John Cena walked away in disgust.

    ReplyDelete
  76. YOU LOOK LIKE YOURE ON STEROIDS I BET YOU LIKE BASEBALL

    ReplyDelete
  77. He probably was considering how thin and awful SD's roster was post-WM20. No Benoit, no Brock, no Edge, no Angle, just like that

    ReplyDelete
  78. "A champion, after all, is only as good as the folks he beats, and the fans knew that beating a guy like [insert wrestler name here] meant nothing."

    ReplyDelete
  79. So much stupidity in that video. Also, are the cops really that inefficient at putting a stop to these kinds of things?

    ReplyDelete
  80. How do those cops not know how to put on a hammer lock? I thought that was day one of cop training, but those guys just threw a bunch of terrible punches and tried to throw people down with a waistlock.

    ReplyDelete
  81. It's been said by multiple people that Vince has a soft spot for guys who "overcome their demons."

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why sue the minnows when you can sue the big mouth bass?

Three workers who don't work much, if at all, anymore looking to leverage some settlement money out of the WWE while yelling "concussions," the hot sports controversy word of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Taker had a nice feud with Orton in 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  84. And if you go with them, which of them do you turn heel?

RVD has a hard time playing heel and staying heel and Booker was a midcard tag champ whose heel schtick, outside of KING BOOKAH, never really seemed to click with WWE audiences.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anybody read the Finn Bálor rumors?

    ReplyDelete
  86. He might get a title on his debut.

    ReplyDelete
  87. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©April 11, 2015 at 10:34 AM

I don't know how I feel about that, didn't work out for Paige so well.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'd assume the US title, normally when a debuting guy defeats a champion who has thrown out an open challenge it's because the champion is an egotistical heel who thinks nobody can beat him.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I remember the rumor was Taker vs. Eddie at SummerSlam

    ReplyDelete
  90. I don't doubt it at all. For as much of a monster as he's assumed to be- and in some respects, probably is- he can't possibly be immune or tone-deaf to the toll the business takes on people.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Rock's movie career was still budding at that point right? If I'm Vince, I throw all the money I can at him and bring him back for a small 6-month run and have a true "passing of the torch" between Rock and Cena at 21.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Give him the Lance Storm push and let him win all the belts...

    ReplyDelete
  93. True, and even though Cena is obviously not a heel, I think that theme still fits here. Even for those that scoff at the idea of "Cena as heel for those that want him to be one," (not me; I think it absolutely has merit) he's willingly played the foil for a crowd favorite opponent throughout his career. I can absolutely see him putting Finn over clean in an open challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hopefully not the IC Title. He'd end up starting his career with a losing streak.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Or Gail Kim.

I think the problem with doing that with the girls is there's nowhere for them to go after as they only have the one title in the division.

As long as Balor gets moved on to other things it shouldn't become an albatross

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think he'll be fine primarily on the basis of being Finn Balor. I just can't see him not being a huge star.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Meanwhile, Big E keeps bringing the awesomeness: https://twitter.com/WWEBigE/status/586657766879531009

    ReplyDelete
  98. He sucked as WWE Champion and only should have ever been upper midcard at most, but he was a damn good heel and played his gimmick well.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I can imagine Eddie going up to the front office saying that the pressure might end up causing him to relapse and Vince not needing to hear anything further to make the call to take it off of him.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Eddie's heel turn was incredible until the soap opera writers reared their ugly heads.

    ReplyDelete
  101. But Carlito!

    ReplyDelete
  102. JBL was fucking awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  103. SmackDown was absolute death, and it didn't helpt that WWE made sure to maintain its status as a B-show. From 06-09 the entire show revolved around Taker, Batista and Edge because WWE settled into a pattern: keep those three on top to keep SmackDown from being a total C-show, while other guys come in from developmental, establish themselves, and then move over to Raw the second they get over.

    ReplyDelete
  104. "Yep Mode" Abeyance Brown ©April 11, 2015 at 11:10 AM

  106. "You promised to make your return at Judgment Day, Rey. I advise against it. Think of your family. Aaliyah and Dominc - your son and your daughter. Don't make me hurt them, Rey. Don't make me take away their papa! Remember: I have your blood on my hands! At Judgment Day, if you come back, I'LL HAVE YOUR LIFE!"

My God. That angle was just magnificent in its early stage.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I think they had Rob Van Dam and Booker T and the Undertaker which all were 1000 times better than Bradshaw. Imagine title matches like RVD vs Eddie or Eddie vs Booker T or Taker vs RVD or Taker vs Eddie or Taker vs Booker T. Enough feuds until Cena was ready.

    ReplyDelete
  108. The three men you mention were all faces and thus not suitable opponents for a face Eddie.

  111. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 11, 2015 at 11:29 AM

A healthy Kurt Angle saves us from the JBL main event run. With Angle hurt and Eddie needing out of the top spot, there was really only JBL, Big Show, or the Undertaker on the SD brand.

The JBL character was perfectly good, it was just better suited for a secondary title like the US or IC belt. The problem was expecting people to buy a lifelong mid-carder as a world champion overnight just because he put on a big hat and was suddenly rich.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I would love it if he goes all out and becomes a flippy guy. That really would make him a heel.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Well, I think they could've went with Taker or brought over a name from Raw, but you're right there weren't a ton of options at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 11, 2015 at 11:32 AM

I think he would have been more universally beloved if that character was used as more of an upper-midcarder and occasional main event challenger. Forcing him from APA mid-carder one minute to main eventer felt way too forced. By the time he hit his stride as a legitimate champion, he was back to being that upper-midcarder, oddly enough

    ReplyDelete
  115. Some low numbers showing up in Augusta. Means if Spieth stumbles, some people may be within striking distance.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 11, 2015 at 11:35 AM

Would have been great as US champion vs. Cena, Show, Benjamin, et al. It was way too forced when they decided he was suddenly a main event guy

    ReplyDelete
  117. I miss the different sets for PPVs. RR 2000 had a great one.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 11, 2015 at 11:39 AM

I think they should have had Shawn Michaels jump to SD and be the guy to dethrone Eddie. Make the 'Bad Blood' cell match with HHH a "Loser Leaves Raw" stip. Shawn leaves, but shows up on SD with a chip on his shoulder. Wins the WWE Title from Guerrero and carries it as a tweener clear up until Wrestlemania 21, where he puts Cena over (with HHH putting over Batista on the same show). JBL was so much better suited for Honk Tonk reign with the US title

    ReplyDelete
  119. About the 2000 RR, HHH really made Cactus Jack look like his worst nightmare when Jack comes back.

    ReplyDelete
  120. We're talking about the wrestler, not the speakers.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Foley takes off the shirt and shows Jack's Dead or Alive shirt. HHH's face is priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  122. *that* guy, eh? I'm never that guy. I can think of 20 wrestlemania matches, alone, that are better than that one. The match was decent but Rocky wasn't quite up to snuff anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 11, 2015 at 11:45 AM

Bad Blood 2004 HHH beats HBK in the Cell, with an added stip that the Loser Leaves Raw. Shawn shows up on SmackDown bitter and heelish. He takes the WWE Title off Guerrero and they do a three-PPV program with Michaels going DX dickhead heel and playing up all Eddie's demons as "mind games." Get Guerrero the help he needs and have Shawn defends against guys like Rey, Taker, Show en route to putting Cena over at Mania 21. JBL wins the US title after Mania 20 and does a Honky Tonk Man reign, feuding with Rey, Cena, Show, Faarooq, Taker, Benjamin, etc clear to Mania 21. Pick a dude you want to push and have him be the guy who ends JBL's reign.

Shawn was the perfect guy to jump to SD and fill in the gap left by Angle. The HHH-HBK feud was exhausted and there was little else for Shawn to do on Raw. He was perfect for top heel on Smackdown. I know he wanted the "limited schedule", but that is easily built into his heel character. He only defends on PPV and isn't on every show. 2004/05 John Cena is the working man character who busts his ass every night, so when the day comes,he is the perfect guy to beat part-timer Shawn at Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Two episodes into Daredevil, goddamn. Without going into a lot of specifics, the fight scene at the end of ep 2 was one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen, even blowing away the famous fight in Oldboy. Awesome shit right now and I've just scratched the surface of the series. I also dig the True Blood chick as Karen Page.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  134. So why does Goldberg's in Eddie v. Brock?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Good look sitting Hayes.

    ReplyDelete
  136. But they brought back Deadman Taker and people were wanting that, so I don't you could've turned him as a heel champ either. Maybe Booker with his heel run, but I don't think they viewed him as that guy (see: WM19)

    ReplyDelete
  137. I just love the segment where he comes out with Rey's mask, grabs a mic and stares at it for a few minutes, then leaves without a word

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  143. I feel bad for Murdoch, shit is gonna hit the fan soon.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anyone else expecting an inspirational Rocky-like montage at the end of ep 1 once he got to the gym?

    ReplyDelete
  145. It was inspiring, just in the darkest fucking way possible

    ReplyDelete
  146. I feel like they did do a portray her as being on that edge, which was good

    ReplyDelete
  147. And without giving away spoilers, DD + blood + rain = true to the comic and therefore awesome

    ReplyDelete
  148. They can make an entire season based on Born Again.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Jbl is one of the greatest of all time on the Mic. That's not popular to say but he completely nailed his character and his promos were always awesome. The problem was he couldn't deliver in the ring. Outside of his I quit match with Cena he sucked in the ring. And the fact that he tended to have long matches and his reign came right after the Smackdown Six era made it worse. I would have rather he be a manager for someone who actually could wrestle instead. I can't think of a wrestler who had as big a difference between in ring ability and Mic skills. His difference in ability was even bigger than Hogans in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I'm on episode 5 right now, and yeah so far it's been awesome. And that fight scene at the end of episode two had a The Raid vibe to it

    ReplyDelete
  151. I consider HHH-Rock Iron Man to be ***** and that has Undertaker's interference with a video package and everything.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I'm waiting for them to do Guardian Devil

    ReplyDelete
  153. This. We have quite a few people with posting privileges, and not a one of them is available for 30 seconds to create a daily thread?

  154. I have no issue with that. But thebrazilianpsycho frequently harps on the Goldberg interference in Eddie v. Brock but seems to have no issue with other interference

  155. Or Father.

  156. "Fuck that Reigns."

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yeah, that's what I said the other night. I have vague memories of that

    ReplyDelete
  158. What's interesting is that Daredevil isn't necessarily on my top ten heroes list for me (top 15 yeah) but his storylines are some of my favorites

    ReplyDelete
  159. Daredevil had awesome runs.

    ReplyDelete
  160. "was fucking Bradshaw the best answer?"

Brian Christopher didn't have a choice

    ReplyDelete
  161. He's always had awesome writers

  162. I loved that Eddie/JBL feud. Just brutal, bloody brawls with a face that was to get behind and a dickhead heel.

    ReplyDelete
  163. The soap opera stuff killed some of the momentum.

    ReplyDelete
  164. JBL was a great heel champ.

    ReplyDelete
  165. They could have turned someone heel.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I know, I was just tossing in another example.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Rock's interference here makes perfect sense not only in regards to the recent build up, it references the previous years match between Foley/Rock, it continues the HHH/Rock feud that carried the company for months after this match and it was nowhere near the finish to the match.

This match is one of the best examples of how interference can enhance a match rather than detract from it.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Well gang... I'm balls deep into season 2 of The League. Taking a break at some point to start Daredevil. Looks like Netflix is my new love. Maybe I'll check out wrestling again around SummerSlam.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Goldberg' interference makes perfect sense too.

    ReplyDelete
  170. JR and Vince patronizing each other on commentary during these October '96 Raws was fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  171. JBL had plenty of heat. He probably doesn't get enough credit for keeping himself over. He had the strong initial push, but then it was pretty much on him. And sometimes he'd go for the throat with his heel promos instead of sticking solely to Chickenshit Heel 101 cliches (like most heels do now).

I enjoyed his brawls with Eddie. The workrate wasn't the best, but those two characters were perfect to feud with eachother.

  172. Does anybody else some kind of gay domination ad on the side of the page or is it just me?

    ReplyDelete
  173. I hate the runs.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I love how history says Foley made HHH. In late 1999, Foley was struggling. Both of them made each other look excellent, and Foley acting like HHH should be grateful beyond reproach always struck me as weird.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Yeah, Foley praises that in his book. If HHH laughs it off, like he's been known to do, Foley's the same beaten down guy in a different shirt. But HHH reacted like he saw a ghost.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Ads are shown based on your browsing habits...

    ReplyDelete
  177. Isn't google Adsense based on your viewing history? Wrestling and semi naked dudes, possibly the same thing...

    ReplyDelete
  178. Well, Foley's right, HHH needed that feud to really cement him as a top guy. Prior to that he came off like the guy pretending to be the top guy. He does thank HHH somewhere, one of his books I assume, for allowing him to end his career on top.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Even a year and change later, when he'd adapted to being at that level again, Eddie didn't want the gold back. Dude was grateful to JBL for taking the title

    ReplyDelete
  180. I didn't see why they couldn't have used Jericho in that role. He runs his mouth, gets beat up and sneaks out a win.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Yeah, if anything doesn't Goldberg spearing Lesnar AND Lesnar kicking out, then Eddie still winning just make Eddie seem like more of a bad-ass? I mean Lesnar had Eddie up for an F5

    ReplyDelete
  182. It's funny that he took that handcuffed beat down from Angle and was completely sympathetic then did the same sort of thing to Rey and was completely dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Yea, it does. I love that Eddie doesn't win because of the spear, he still has to do it himself.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I can believe that. Undertaker treated Punk like shit in their first feud. He only showed Punk respect after other people put Punk over.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Really? Wow, I didn't realize how much I liked the Asian ladies...

    ReplyDelete
  186. Must be all the wrestling, yep.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Now there's a Panda Express ad. I don't recall searching anything related to faux-Chinese food.

  188. WWE News:

The 2016 Royal Rumble will be in Orlando on 1/24.

The 2016 Fastlane PPV will be in St. Louis

  189. Or the gay bondage porn.

    ReplyDelete
  190. That match was hhh's first shining moment. It was easy to just keep praising foley around that time but I always thought hhh was great in that match

    ReplyDelete
  191. I know the AA is a little suspect, but that's not nice.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Or the gay bondage porn

    ReplyDelete
  193. It's random, from what I can tell. Even on a school computer that I never used before, I'd get ads with skimpy ladies and such.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Turned off Adblock and I'm getting WWE Network and car ads. I never look up cars, though...

    ReplyDelete
  195. Sure it's not just Rollins?
