Extant's Pull List - April 8, 2015

I went on vacation, I started a new job and now we're back with some comics.

DC Comics kicks off its two-month Convergence event with Issue 1 of the weekly series (issue 0 came out last week) and a handful of two-issue mini-series where various timelines collide, mostly featuring Flashpoint characters this week.

In addition to the main series, I also picked up Superman, The Question (written by Greg Rucka), Batgirl, Justice League, Nightwing/Oracle (written by Gail Simone) and Harley Quinn. Also available (but not getting my money because I'm still waiting for my first paycheck) are The Atom, Batman & Robin, Titans and Speed Force.

Over on the Marvel side, the big news of the week, obviously, is the premiere of Daredevil on Netflix, coming on Friday. No new episodes of Arrow or Flash, and I gave up on Gotham a while back.

In between comics, I'll be continuing to play MLB The Show 15 on my PS4, and then on Tuesday, out comes Mortal Kombat X.

Comics are available in comic book stores and online. What about the Blog of Doom's comic book readers? What are you reading today and what are you looking forward to?

  1. Astro City came in today on my Comixology subscription... always look forward to that. Otherwise, I'm on Marvel Unlimited, so I'll peruse whatever is made available this week (6 months from when it was published) and see what catches my interest.

  2. I'm not reading the main Convergence series, but I'll be picking up several of the tie-ins you mentioned: Speed Force, Question, Superman, Nightwing/Oracle, Justice League and probably Batman and Robin. I do wish the creators were stronger on some of these books, but I love these versions of several of these characters. Plus Rucka on Question!

  3. Looking forward to Daredevil.

  4. I have a small pile of trades and it's Mocca this weekend!!! Mocca weekend is the best weekend of the year! It's the most fun comic convention ever. I seriously cannot wait.

  5. I don't actively read any comics. I just follow the overall happenings on CBR and scans_daily (now that I've rediscovered it).

  6. I may check out Nightwing/Oracle because Gail Simone and maybe Batgirl, tho I wish it was written by her. Speed Force for sure. I may have to go dark side to read them for now...you know on a bench at Books A Million. Yes. A bench.

I really have to say, so far, S6 of Community has been a huge disappointment.

And despite playing The Show almost every year for the last decade, I suck at it.

  8. I haven't seen passed season 4.

I was doubtful any further conclusion would be satisfying. Season 4 while lesser than the first three was watchable and wrapped up what was left of the plot.

  9. Been reading the new Marvel Star Wars stuff and enjoying it. My local comic store fucked my pull list up last week though, claiming I didn't subscribe to stuff like Amazing Spider-Man. Have to check with them today about that.

  10. You're not missing much. Caught up on Amazing last night (up to 17), it's kinda meh.

  11. Read lots of DC, but decided to save some money over the next 2 months and completely skip Convergence and all the tie-ins as I was new to comics with the New 52 and this doesn't seem to really be for me as an audience.

For what i did buy, firstly want to give props to an interesting comic from last week, based on Rick & Morty, very funny first issue. This week the big one is the Deadpool death issue for me, also picked up Howard the Duck #2, Ant-Man #4, All-New Hawkeye #4, Captain Marvel #14, some random metal biography comic that features Slayer on the cover and looks bad ass, and the other big one from this week, Re-Animator #1 from Dynamite, if it is half as good as their Army of Darkness comics it will be great.

  12. I liked the first episode of the season, the second wasn't great. Fell behind on this, and Powers, unfortunately.

  13. it isn't completely awful, its just at a point when you lose more and more cast members (Shirley's loss was bigger than I thought, she was very much the heart of the group which is missing), and also the smaller budget going from NBC to Yahoo and it is inevitable that the quality has dropped

Powers has been pretty good, IMO. It's created an identity separate from the comic book while keeping true to the tone of the book. I still have to watch this week's episode, which I'll probably do tonight.

I think that if the cast had retained either Shirley or Troy, it would be much better. As you said, Shirley was the heart of the group; and without Troy, Abed is somewhat cast adrift, as he no longer has anyone to play off of the way he did with Troy.

Pierce was a much easier character to lose than the other two, and I don't think getting him back adds anything to the show, but the other two combined is cataclysmic.

In terms of last week's books, I was pretty disappointed with the endings of the three weeklies - Future's End, Earth 2: World's End and Batman: Eternal. I was looking for more finality after committing to months (a year in Eternal's case) of reading and countless dollars, but everything is basically "to be continued."

Future's End's ending will likely continue in the new Batman Beyond book, which will no doubt star future Tim Drake as BB; Earth 2: World's End literally goes into the first issue of Convergence. Batman Eternal was the least offensive of the trio, as it did wrap up the story, but with the status quo changes coming in June, I'm not sure how much there will be to play off of.

And don't get me started on the week before. A whole mess of Annuals that all ended with, "Come back in June for the end of the story!" Dude. If you're charging me $5 for an oversized book, deliver an ending!

Maybe I'm just turning into a cranky old fan, but some of this stuff is really just obnoxious.

Why aren't you reading the main Convergence series, out of curiosity?

    ReplyDelete
  18. i think you just nailed my biggest problem with this season, Abed is just window dressing as this point, last season they still had things for him to do, this year it feels like he is only there to add in a pop culture one liner every now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Picked up Nightwing/Batgirl, and also MTMTE #39 which is one of the best series going

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm just not interested in it as a concept. The big tie-ins typically don't do much for me unless Johns is helming them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't read comics either and haven't in many years (whichever came last between Death of Superman and Knightfall is the last story I ready). Still, I read these threads to see if there's anything that sounds interesting enough to get back into. Same with video games - I haven't had any interest in video games in a very long time.

  22. For me this week it's Astro City, Saga, Deadpool, Howard the Duck, Avengers World and Bill & Ted. Plus the trade of TMNT/Ghostbusters and the Nemo: River of Ghosts GN. Love me some League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Agreed. Besides your point about missing Troy and Shirley, I think the lack of attention to classes has hurt the show. It's not about people going to college anymore, with their own goals; it's just a bunch of randos hanging out at a school.

My one hope at this point is that Abed realizes he's not in a sitcom anymore; he's on Lost, and Greendale is the island.

That said, Keith David and Paget Brewster get at least one laugh out of me every episode. I'd rather they keep those two and the Dean and replace the rest of the Group at this point.

  24. Tmnt/ghostbusters is fun. IDW has some good books right now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, I've been reading since 648 when Slott took over full time and Spider-Verse just didn't do much for me. I wonder how long Slott will stick around on spidey.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Me too. I want to binge on Daredevil this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Same here. I don't really give a shit about these events, but some of the tie in books look fun. I'm really looking forward to Shazam.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was randomly reading about (somewhat) recent goings on in the Marvel Universe.

Nick Fury killed The Watcher? A cosmic entity that has stared down Galactus got shot in the head and killed by Some Dude? WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah and also, Nick Fury is actually old as fuck and there are like 1,000 Nick Fury life model decoys that have fooled everyone forever.

    ReplyDelete
  30. New Saga this week! If you're not reading Saga, please try it out. It's the best comic book.

Other than that I've got Bill and Ted, Howard the Duck, Walking Dead, Copperhead and Edward Scissorhands this week. Might pick up Hawkeye 2 if my shop has an extra copy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm confused. I haven't kept up with the weeklies, how is Tim Drake Batman Beyond? Is there some time traveling going on?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't know how much Convergence stuff I'll read but calling a book Speed Force gets my attention. Sounds like fun. Also, I'll probably check out the Lantern stuff.

Speaking if which, Red Lantern had a weird ending with somehow the Blue Power of Hope overpowered the Red that Guy's been wielding. But, I don't remember Guy ever wearing a blue ring, and there were no blue lanterns around...

I mean, I get the metaphor of hope over hate, but within the confines of the story and the rules of the universe they're in, it shouldn't just work that way.

Future's End bounced between 35 years in the future and 5 years in the future.

  34. Oh...so we're looking at a much older Tim? Cool.
