Freebirds in Georgia

Scott,

I have been looking for info on the Freebirds split in Ga and there seems to be two stories - some sites says Roberts and Gordy attacked Hayes after a loss. In a promo Hayes claims Gordy walked out on him during a match against Ole and Gene Anderson.

In his promo Hayes says Ole sold him out. Not sure how that would work since Gordy was his partner.

can't find any results of a match between the Andersons and the Birds. Did Hayes turn face off camera and they created the phantom walk out to explain the face turn? Was there an attack and a reconciliation before Gordy walked out on him?

I will say first up, I love the font.  That being said, that era is WAY before my time as a fan, so perhaps some of the other grumpy and older farts here on the blog can be of more assistance to you on that one.

    Comic sans? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  2. If I recall correctly, Hayes angered everyone by wearing a bright green suit and referred to himself as being an African American with several racial slurs.

    But perhaps I'm misremembering.

    ReplyDelete
  3. He was drunk singing at a wedding before he passed about but everything else checks out.

  4. Michael Hayes is the oldest-looking 56 year old I can think of.

Dude looks at least 15 years older.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's how every man over 30 looks with long hair.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hayes would look a lot better and younger if he cut the mullet.

    ReplyDelete
  7. And if he stopped doing hard drugs in 1979.

Not watching bias. It was a great match.

Well, TNA has used Smashing Pumpkins songs on PPV before, so I'm only half surprised by this.

  22. It still blows my mind that that guy is a wrestling fan.

  23. Just posted this too. Intriguing.

I look forward to Angle being recast by Corgan into a shaven-headed ghoul... oh.

    ReplyDelete
  24. True, but WWE got a lot more mileage out of the big monster heels in the Hogan era. Look at Earthquake -- when he stopped being a major threat as a singles wrestler, WWF stuck him in a tag team and got a few more years out of him.

  26. I'd say have her reveal herself as a double agent, attempting to set up Rusev to lose to Cena in the name of the US. They could do a Black Widow type spy character with her.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I LOL'd when he yelled that at the crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Has anyone seen the stuff he did when he was running that Indy promotion in Chicago? I have no idea if that was any good.

    ReplyDelete
  29. He's buddies with CM Punk, isn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The pre-show match was excellent though as UK fan watching the FIRST EVER UK vs UK match on a WWE PPV, I'm admittedly biased.

EXCEPT for the Divas match, everything on the main show except for Ziggler v Sheamus was hugely entertaining, and even the post-match stips to that match made the room I was in ripple with laughter, so that gets a pass too.

I'd be hard pushed to pick a favourite match from them all.

  32. ROCK-em SOCK-em Robot!!!!April 27, 2015 at 9:37 AM

What makes it so awesome is that they were just randomly, violently turned on by the crowd.

The gimmick isn't any dumber than most other WWE ideas. It makes Woods' whining even funnier.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree. They should be able to get some good heel mileage out of having the extra guy always running around, too.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think people were already tiring of it and they were getting no reaction after a while, but then Philly shitting on them in the Rumble pre0show was the impetus for the other crowds following along.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wonder if he is going to record all the matches himself and just let the wrestlers do them on the road.

  44. ROCK-em SOCK-em Robot!!!!April 27, 2015 at 9:43 AM

Agreed. It was a dumb, boring gimmick.

Normally, it would have just faded and been forgotten. But for whatever reason the crowd just took them to the woodshed and it's awesome. It makes how incredulous Woods is to the reaction even funnier.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, now he'll be helping to run an indy promotion in Nashville

  47. Was Buddy in GA then? For some reason I thought that the Birds in GA were just Hayes & Gordy and Buddy was only in Mid-South at that point. If that's the case, I'd go with Gordy jumping or ditching Hayes.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have. He's actually pretty decent. It's going to be interesting to see how he does in TNA. Resistance Pro was hurt by having very green wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Sheamus vs. Ziggler was really disappointing. And the main event fell flat. Not much of a show.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, let's give Billy a chance then!

    ReplyDelete
  55. The break-up is ridiculous. There's reason that they can't hold both the US and Divas titles as a power couple.

  56. Hey, did you guys hear that Billy Corgan is joining TNA?

    First to break the news!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Rollins starts with his back facing the ring, then jumps, turns and does a 450 splash. The Red Arrow is more of a corkscrew and he begins the move facing the ring.

That's why I'll defend Big Show to the death. He can still bring it every now and then.

Kane can just fuck off though.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Punk might have been an "established main eventer" before MITB 2011 (same as some like Alberto Del Rio was an "established main eventer") but he really wasn't one of the "top stars" until that Cena feud. similar for Daniel Bryan, who wasn't "there" yet after SummerSlam but that clean win definitely helped him a lot.

(even if you look at all of the "Cena era", there clearly less heels that gained something from programs with him. I mean, besides Edge and Lesnar, did anyone?)

    ReplyDelete
  63. IDK he came pretty close after Lita took her golden snatch away.

I see LeBron didn't say shit about Perkins and Smith clearly going after Jae Crowder yesterday.

Poor Jae Crowder. He didn't deserve that.

  82. It was such a bitch move too. Square up on a man and swing if that's how you want to do things. That's the kind of weak, scared move that someone like Kevin Garnett, the fakest tough guy in the league, would pull. Garnett's always a giant badass when someone is holding him back.

  93. I know heat of the moment emotions get the best of you, but I don't understand why athletes fail to remember there are cameras everywhere focusing on their every move.

You'd think a guy like Ndamukong Suh would know by now that Big Brother is watching him every time he stomps somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Heh, Bischoff working for Jarrett again? It went so well the last time.

    ReplyDelete
  95. JR should get 10 games but since it's the playoffs they'll probably wither it down to 3-5 like Ron Artest got in 2012 for the Hulk elbow to Harden.

Olynyk has a little more wiggle room because even though it was clearly dirty to me, he can make a reasonable argument otherwise. I say he gets 3 to start next season.

    ReplyDelete
  96. One thing I've noticed about the putrid WWE commentary is when a guy like Neville, Sin Cara or Kalisto, noted high-flyers, debut or wrestle, whenever they go to the top, the broadcasters scream like something awesome will happen that we've never before seen! But somehow, that diminishes whatever move ends up being executed.

Whereas a guy like JR would allow the top rope move happen, allow the fans to react and then say it's the damndest thing he's ever seen (or another JR-ism). I believe he had a great call when Mero busted out the Shooting Star Press for the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  97. And the time before that (WCW).

    ReplyDelete
  98. Rasheed, Artest, Gilbert Arenas, or peak crazy Stephen Jackson. That would be glorious.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I think his current heel persona is such an improvement for Sheamus (despite them not even making major changes): the other look, the new entrance theme etc.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Could do worse. As long as he's away from any sort of creative role and is simply a guy kept around because he knows how wrestling and TV shows work, then I don't see anything majorly wrong with it.

Guy has plenty of crappy reality show credits to his name, so I'm sure he's got some connections somewhere that might help.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Olynyk is a cheapshot artist too, not to mention an awful rebounder, possibly the worst in the NBA. But what Smith did was inexcusable.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I was under the impression that Lana can't wrestle because of some sort of health issue.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Woods as the Michael Hayes works - just keep him out of the ring until it's time to take the beating.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Can't do any worse than some of the bozo's they've let run the place before.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Amazing how the same handful of morons just keep running things year after year, decade after decade.

Jesus, Bischoff and Jarrett together? This whole promotion is an instant pass for me.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'd be curious to see if this has any impact of Love considering Boston this summer. Guys usually have short memories when it comes to a big contract, but you never know.

I don't think he'd be the savior of this team, but the C's desperately need rebounding help.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Billy Corgan has joined TNA. Jesus, Billy. :/

    ReplyDelete
  108. But Shelton is REALLY REALLY funny!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I didn't get why they went after Crowder. He's a bit annoying but didnt deserve that. If Olnyk got his ass kicked by Perk and JR I would have been okay with it.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I like how people are still talking like the John Cena US Championship Open Challenge™ has actually benefitted/elevated a single challenger thus far.

As for Rusev, I think it's hard to argue that his working with (and mostly losing to) Cena has given him a bigger rub than had he actually beaten Cena at WrestleMania and retained the title, or better yet simply continued to successfully retain the belt all this time, beating foes in ever more dominant and spectacular fashion. As it is they've pretty much established he can't beat Cena, which is the opposite of putting someone over and building a new star.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I had some faith in Jarrett until this news.

    Now? None.

  115. So watched ER this morning and wow, what a giant fucking snoozefest. Yeah everything was competently wrestled and such and the tag title match was excellent, but overall it's everything WWE is nowadays: a who gives a fuck show full of who cares nobodies engaging in unover "stories."

The main event in particular--- man, anyone still think Randy Orton is a main eventer? That match wouldn't have looked out of place as midcard fodder on a WCW Worldwide show. I dunno, they really need to rethink their main event feud ASAP. Orton's gotta be replaced as the challenger, and honestly Seth might already be damaged goods as a champ. He's basically just playing Orton's old role as HHH/Steph's stooge champ from 2013/14, and that died a terrible death. They'd be better off just having HHH as heel champ and go that way, at least the champ would seem like a star.

    ReplyDelete
  116. To be fair, that's how things are in real life too. Recycling people and ideas are easier than to create new ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  117. What season of ER did you watch? It was best up through when Carol Hathaway left, then it was hit or miss for a while

    ReplyDelete
  118. Let it go, dude. You're the only one who cares

    ReplyDelete
  119. He's got some TV connections though, right? It could be a good thing if they just use him for his strengths.

  120. All three Freebirds were in Georgia in 1980 where they defended first the Georgia and then the National tag team titles under Freebird rules with Ted DiBiase being their main target, putting him out of action after three piledrivers on the floor. I believe Gordy and Roberts then turned on Hayes, although Roberts soon left Georgia. That lead to Michael Hayes and various partners feuding with Terry Gordy & Jimmy Snuka during 1981. Hayes and Gordy then reunited in 1982 for one more run with the National titles before heading off the World Class.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Bahahaha, I've seen one episode of that show, the one where Clooney saves the kid drowning in a drainage pipe.

No clue why I remember the episode name, but I think it's considered one of the "breakout" eps

    ReplyDelete
  124. Go back to being hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Yeah. It was pretty crappy. If the best match on the card involves New Day, we've got issues.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Yeah I was like "I get it!", I don't need to watch kid in a pipe stories every week. Little did I know!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Crowder was aggravating LeBron and that is the only reason I have.

  129. ROCK-em SOCK-em Robot!!!!April 27, 2015 at 10:22 AM

I don't understand why they did the stop they did. Orton's main appeal is the inventive cool ways he can get to an RKO. It's the best trick he has in his toolbox. Without that his moveset is bland and boring. That's usually okay as it enhances the RKO spots by lulling you down. Without it, he just doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  134. Athletes have been told they can do no wrong 10+ years from high school to pros. They're not going to change easily or quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  135. It's great too how their gimmick bombs, the fans reject it, and in WWE's mind it's like "oh wow they're such super over heels!" It'd be like putting a title on Adam Rose because of how badly he bombed.

    ReplyDelete
  136. So did the kid

    ReplyDelete
  137. Rusev is dead either way so why not finish the job? His gimmick is that Russians are superior and he has been proven wrong two months in a row. The character is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  138. So... isn't the natural finish for the Cena/Rusev match that Rusev says "I quit!" first, but he says it in Bulgarian so the referee doesn't stop the match. Then he makes Cena say "I quit" and wins, but the announcers play up hard the idea that Rusev really quit first...?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Yeah but the new day are pretty great now.

    ReplyDelete
  140. The scary part is I was going to make a joke about the E/R Comedy starring Elliot Gould was my favorite, but then I realized that George Clooney was in both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I think we get Lana throwing in the towel to finally lead to the split.

    ReplyDelete
  143. As I said last night, ha....HA to those who complain about the SmarkMania fans who "just want to get themselves over." They clearly helped in this case.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Yeah their whole booking for this match was bizzarre. They basically tell you that the finish will be decided by Kane, a guy that the fans don't want to see. And that Randy Orton can't do the one thing he does that fans give a fuck about. The two of them were basically wrestling a completely heatless match for about 15 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Yeah, Lana quits for Rusev, Rusev is about to attack Lana, Cena makes the save, thus Lana sees the light about MURICA and all its glory.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Feuding authority figures, it's gonna rule dude

    ReplyDelete
  147. Yeah the whole story of these matches has been about compassion... Lana will show it here and it drives Rusev to snap.

    ReplyDelete
  148. It really was "these two guys are doing jack shit for 15 minutes until the senior citizen on the outside does something." And thassssssss it, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I think the natural finish for Rusev/Cena was LAST NIGHT. Holy shit, can't believe they're doing another one.

But honestly I think Lana decides the next match. Either she throws in the towel for Rusev and their split officially goes down, or she cheats to help trick Cena into losing. Like, Rusev is gonna throw Lana off a balcony unless Cena says "I Quit." Either way, I'd bet anything that teh finish is a Lana-based clusterfuck.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Or Lana says she is going to bring in someone to punish Rusev leading to the long awaited return of Nikolai Volkoff.

  151. And Elliot Gould also was in the MASH movie (no asterisks)

    ReplyDelete
  152. The only match I watched last night was Big Show vs. Roman Reigns, and I liked it.

I think my biggest gripe these days is that I hate World title matches featuring guys you know have no chance in hell of walking out with the title. Whenever Orton, Big Show, or Kane is inserted into a title match, it instantly screams "skip this PPV" for me. And I feel bad for the announcers for trying to sell these guys as a threat when everybody over the age of 7 knows that they're not.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Despite all their rage we will still have each match in a cage.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Every Orton match is a snoozer til they start busting out finishers, kicking out, then the RKO comes into play. So they ban Orton from doing the RKO, and replace the near-finishes with Kane interference. It was scientifically impossible that the match would be good at that point.

  155. If this leads to promo time for Sheiky Baby, I'm all in.

  156. Hopefully it's the wet towel that is the only clothing she has on

    ReplyDelete
  157. That's a good point.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Are they though? In what sense? I mean if they start cutting heel promos that actually get heat and lead to great matches and interesting angles, sure. But I absolutely haven't seen that yet, other than having one great match last night with two of the best wrestlers on the roster. So far they've just been a terrible gimmick that the fans rejected.

But Kofi and Langston are talented, so maybe they do something with it.

    ReplyDelete
  159. If Billy Corgan joining TNA doesn't lead to a pumpkin smashing gimmick match I'll be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I thought it looked solid on paper but the stips hurt the matches. The chain match stip killed Cena/Rusev and the main event was underwhelming to say the least. Ziggler/Sheamus didn't click either. I actually thought the diva's did a good job.

    ReplyDelete
  161. How about Orton AND Reigns being inserted into the title match in 3 weeks, lol. That screams something a little more vulgar to me, but basically the same deal.

    ReplyDelete
  162. The late table spots were good, but prior to that it was once again a match where Reigns seemed to spend about 10 minutes lying on the mat.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Or at least someone naming a move the Zwanton bomb.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Mellon Collie and the Infinate Sadness would be an appropriate name for a TNA pay per view.

  165. *Insert joke about Vince not knowing who Black Widow is until 2025*

  166. The countdown is ON to "guess who else we hired, BRO?"

    ReplyDelete
  167. So apparently the idea to do KotR was made last week.

They really haven't put any thought into it, have they?

    ReplyDelete
  168. The problem with Orton as a main eventer is that there's no way to make fans give a fuck about his character (in any real super over way) or his goals or his outcomes. I mean, did they really believe the fanbase would galvanize around seeing Randy Orton win his fucking 300th world title? Hell, we're a year removed from Orton holding the title for about EIGHT MONTHS in one of the biggest bomb title reigns in decades.

As a midcard guy popping crowds with the RKO spot, sure. But Randy Orton as a main eventer in 2015 is fucking death.

  179. Nice of WWE to hastily hot shot the King of the Ring on the network exactly 30 days after Mania. Not that anyone will care with zero build but it comes off as a desperate attempt to avoid an avalanche of cancellations.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Yuuuuuup. 85 table spots isn't solving shit in the long run.

  184. What is the incentive for winning the King of the Ring? Is it just a tournament just to be a tournament or will their be a title shot or something for the winner?

    ReplyDelete
  185. I really hope that shit doesn't find a TV deal. Double J and Eric are such garbage retreads that have no chance of actually creating anything worthwhile, and yeah it would basically just exist as a way of them scamming some money for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Mellon Collie just hit Siamese Dream for the win!

  187. Especially considering track four of that album would be roughly the buyrate of said PPV.
