Hogan vs. Jobber

Hey Scott,

Did Hogan ever wrestler an enhancement match? I was wondering because Hogan matches were basically enhancement matches no matter who he was facing (Shine, Heat, Comeback, Go Home) so the idea of him selling like crazy for, say, Barry Horowitz's offense and then making a huge comeback like he was overcoming insane odds would be hilarious to me.

Thanks.

He wrestled the Mountie that one time.  And there's no bigger jobber than him!

During the actual Hulkamania era, no, he never appeared on regular TV except for one match against I think Bob Orton on Superstars.  Using him to squash geeks would have been a ridiculous waste of him.

  1. You leave the Mountie alone, jerkass!

He wrestled a jobber in 1985 during the introduction angle for Hillbilly Jim, and yes he did sell for him.

  3. The joke loses a bit of its punch knowing that Hogan LOST to The Mountie.

    ReplyDelete
  4. What about the matches where he was kicking around teams of jobbers in Allentown takings with Blassie as his mouthpiece?

  5. The first two years of Hogan's first reign he would occassionally show up on at a TV taping for a squash. Johnny Rodz is the only one that comes to mind. Rodz actually had Hogan down on the mat at one point. But in a squash match against Rusty Brooks, Hogan had his first confrontation with Randy Savage to begin that feud.

  6. I could have sworn I remember him having one or two squash matches. It was extremely rare though.

  7. Those poor ham and eggers earned their $25 against Hogan during that phase of his career. Hogan was stiff and rough and I wenced quite a few times seeing Hogan hammering on these middle aged out of shape scrubs,

  8. Hogan & Dino Bravo wrestled on superstars before Wrestlemania VI.

  9. Billy Kidman. That guy couldn't draw at a flea market or something, brother.

  10. The genius beat him on Saturday nights main event

  11. Yup, I 100% remember that Rusty Brooks squash. Evidently that was "a ridiculous waste of him." I kinda like how Scott compounded the laziness by speaking authoritatively, though.

  12. He wrestled plenty of jobber matches in AWA. I remember seeing him do a lot of them as I watched Verne's crew back then (loved the "beat two jobbers at once" thing. So good at establishing somebody as a powerhouse).

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not true. Saw him on the weekly syndicated show squashing Tiger Chung Lee. He showed up now and then, particularly in the first couple years of his title reign.

  14. I do think I recall my 8-9 year old self getting excited for a Hulk Hogan-Barry Windham match back on TV in the mid-to-late 80s. Am I crazy? Was so memorable, of course, because Hogan rarely wrestled on WWF weekly syndicated programming. Only interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it was Rusty Brooks (?) in late 85 vs Hogan to set up the Hogan-Savage house show run. Elizabeth cut a promo and distracted Hogan!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Here's a better question ... would Hogan at least work a dark match main event during those endless TV taping they did for All-Americann and Superstars? You've got to give fans SOMETHING for sitting through 30 jobber matches.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He wrestled on TV more regularly during the Championship Wrestling era than on Superstars of Wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOL, this post is about Jobber and the ad at the bottom is for store-bought guac!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Of course. That was the draw, not Koko B. Ware vs. Iron Mike Sharpe. Hogan actually wrestled a pretty crazy schedule in the 80's. Not Ric Flair crazy, but crazy.

  20. Boris Zhukov, WWF Superstars 1988.

  21. Jerry Lawler kinda treating Hogan like a bitch.

  22. He did a spot in 1984 against Tiger Chung Lee. John McAdam had the tape. Whatever happened to that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It never happened - but Widownaker did challenge Hogan in a insert oromo

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hogan supposedly wrestled Race in a dark match on the same shoe the islanders turned heel.

    Points at camera and laughs.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This was like 85-86ish I'm thinking while Windham was still a member of the US Express

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yep, I remember that one as well. It kind of came out of nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think he fought Akeem on Superstars as well, I know Savage did. And I know he did on SNME but he might of on Superstars also.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I remember this one.

  29. Hogan vs Zukoff on Superstars in 88

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yupp. Involved the warrior angle

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hogan was beating jobbers two at a time in the heel pre- Hulkamania era

    ReplyDelete
  32. Everybody was a jobber in the ring with the Hulkster, brother.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was more apparent in WCW 94-96 as Hogan treated everyone he wrestled against with the exception of Sting as a JTTS guy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He fought haku on wrestling challenge

    ReplyDelete
  35. He faced Bret Hart in WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Didn't he wrestle one of the Mad Dogs, who had obtained jobber status?

    ReplyDelete
  37. When he wrestled as Sterling Golden in Georgia Championship Wrestling in the fall of 1979, he would squash jobbers like Chick Donovan.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Before Wrestlemania 1, I saw Hogan fight the Masked Superstar, not a jobber but close

    ReplyDelete
  39. A little off topic, but Hogan's most random appearance ever was on Superstars, post Summer Slam 1990.

As you'll recall, the Big Bossman was in Hogan's corner (doing double duty also reffing the Roberts/Bad News Brown match) at Summer Slam instead of Tugboat (kayfabe reason that Earthquake squashed him a couple of weeks before the show, real reason unknown but speculated as disciplinary action).

Anyway, a few weeks after Superstars, Tugboat made his 're-debut', wrestled a quick squash match and then at the end Hogan randomly comes out, raises his hand up, they quickly go to a commercial break and don't mention the whole thing again the rest of the show.

I still have no idea what they were doing with Tugboat there, I'm guessing Vince thought he'd get over much more than he actually did and they were doing the hard sell with him.

    ReplyDelete
  40. He wrestled Moondog Spot on Championship Wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I always figured Hogan wrestling was their big selling point for a random episode of SNME. It was this unspoken thing... "Hey, tune in to SNME! HULK HOGAN will actually wrestle against Hercules!!"

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tugboat was hogans friend Kayfabe and probably irl too. If I rember right he turned on hogan to side with earthquake after coming back

    ReplyDelete
  43. You're so right. I should have researched TV tapings from 1984-90 before speaking on the subject.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And lest we forget, Rusty Brooks.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I was the biggest Hulkamaniac ever, but since we never had PPV, I never saw him wrsstle outside of Coliseum Video

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey in all fairness it would take a few minutes using History of the WWE and the "find" function.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The Johnny Rodz match (1985) was on the first wrestling show I remember watching and I was immediately hooked. Thanks, Hulkster!

    ReplyDelete
  48. He did, I think it was around Wrestlemania 1 or 2 to hype the event. I was beyond stoked because it was the first time I'd gotten to see him wrestle, and I was a big Rock n' Wrestling fan.

    ReplyDelete
  49. he wrestled zukhov or koloff on superstars after wm 4 right? I remember Ventura saying how odd it was to see hogan without the belt

    ReplyDelete
  50. They gave Tugboat the "Hillbilly Jim" type push for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Now.. why isn't shit like this on the network?

    ReplyDelete
  52. His turn was down the road, about a year later shortly before Summer Slam 1991, but they did sort of a slow-burn on it, having him go after Hogan in the Rumble (Hogan eliminated him) and then having him dump Hogan at the SNME battle royal shortly after WrestleMania 7.

  53. Broad Street BullyApril 19, 2015 at 6:29 AM

He and Sting teamed up on Worldwide to squash the Bruise Bros(?) prior to the Clash 6-man with Evad vs. Tenta, Beefcake & Sullivan IIRC.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah ... Hogan didn't do the interntaional touring Flair had to but that is because he didn't have to. Hogan made his money on the house show circuit, didn't he? In Bret Hart's book he talked about how guys would go running to get their booking sheet to see if they were touring with Hogan.

    ReplyDelete
  55. THE BUTCHER! Watch out for my sleeper, brother!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Gotta love that the only ever Hogan vs Hart match is a less than 5 minute affair on a throwaway Nitro. Because WCW.
