Ladies and gentlemen...

Since it was next on the list of stuff I wanted to see on the Network, I watched the Paul Heyman doc this afternoon, and man that might have been one of the best they've ever done.  I loved how brutally honest it was at times, especially since the subject is someone who knows himself as well as Paul does.  And unlike the Savage doc, this one had time to breathe and covered everything in detail and pretty much talked about all the things that you'd be interested in hearing about as a fan.  The genesis of the phone, his early days taking pictures, his troubles in WCW.  The only thing it didn't touch on was the feud with Cornette but there's probably some legal stuff there too. I really loved the contrast of all these people talking about what a great mentor and talent he was and then the constant cutting to Stephanie, who clearly does not drink the Kool-Aid, just shutting down the great points about him as diplomatically as possible.  It's also great to have a doc about someone who has not just died or destroyed his life and then needs to rebuild it or is the flavor of the month or whatever.  Also, finally his impressions of Kevin Sullivan and Dusty Rhodes preserved for posterity.  So yes, this was tremendous.

  1. Paul Heyman is perfect for WWE productions because they don't have to pay attention to all those pesky wrestling matches.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Steph became unbearable after a while. She is 100% "WWE IS THE GREATEST" at all times, and just comes off as a complete twat at just about every turn.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The way her face contorts when describing these lies at length is becoming disturbing.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is this on Netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Also fuck Paul for lying about being paid by Vince.

  6. Dude, the network is 2 bucks more a month.

  7. Really good match that gets lost in the shuffle for sure

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's bullshit he isn't booking his own promotion right now. Wrestling needs it.

I think whatever their own feelings might be, her kids will respect her wishes and not bring up the matter.

As an Owen fan, it saddens me that he's been essentially been erased by history and forgotten by most. But I completely understand Martha's viewpoint and can't blame her one bit for not bending on the matter.

  11. I believe it's basically accepted that Paul and Vince had a financial arrangement in the 90s and multiple ECW wrestlers have said in shoots that they was definitely SOMETHING happening between Vince and Paul based on their observations and overheard conversations backstage as well as Danny Doring saying that he saw Paul duck out on the ECW crew on the way to New England for a show and spotted him in the front seat of Vince's car as it sped out from under Titan Towers.

To my knowledge, neither party has ever issued any statement about this besides flat denial.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He's up there in terms of my favorite wrestling folks ever; can sell anything on the stick and made quite the wave, however short lived, with ECW. I just love listening to him talk, and you could tell by that speech featured in Beyond the Mat that his guys would run through a wall for him.

  19. It's definitely public knowledge now. It's been said on both this doc and the ECW one. I'm wondering how Paul lied about it?

What I'm saying is that most people say that Smackdown was bad because JBL was champion. There are so many others to blame. Booker T basically phoned it in once he got drafted and I don't know what the hell RVD was doing. Matt Hardy basically got killed when he lost to Gowen and drafted to Raw. I'm surprised Cena was still as hot as he was given the stiffs he was facing on a nightly basis.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No way it could've been salvaged; its top tier talent were gutted or shipped to RAW, they whiffed on every rookie, and had weak or disinterested veteran workers as filler. Awful show in about every way imaginable.

I agree and that's why I never blamed JBL.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It wasn't a big deal, it was just WWE paying ECW the money they lost when they signed 2 Cold Scorpio because Paul had a deal with a record company to sponsor him.

  43. Question for the blog: What are some essential Rockers matches to check out? I've been on a big post-comeback HBK kick on the network because I didn't really watch from 2002 through 2010. But now I wanna go back and check out some old tag matches. Any suggestions?

Maybe because I kind of enjoyed counting the wins for faces and heels at Mania, and the fact that Extreme Rules is coming up, I decided to tally up the wins for that show and here are the figures.
    Out of 56 matches
    Faces: 40
    Heels: 13
    Draws: 1

  83. Yeah, WWE paid ECW $1,000/week from 1996 and beyond because ECW lost a $1,000/week sponsorship from Tommy Boy Records when WWE signed 2 Cold Scorpio. That did happen as they even showed a screenshot from ECW in 1996 while Paul was talking that said thanks to TBR for sponsoring the ECW TV show
Vince also loaned ECW over $500,000 so that they afford to go ahead with the Heat Wave 2000 PPV when ECW was heading for the end. That was the source of the debt to WWE listed in the 2001 ECW bankruptcy filing.

  100. Remember a few years ago when HHH was feuding with Brock? There was a promo that Stephanie cut on Heyman that was so savage and so obviously based in her real emotions. It basically amounted to "You're not as good as my Daddy!"

I think when it comes to Paul, both Vince and Steph have serious insecurity issues, given how the fans and the wrestlers value his opinions and contributions to wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Adam "Colorado" CurryApril 5, 2015 at 6:45 PM

I think it's more like slang rather than slur. There is a Spanish slur for a white guy, but I forget what it is.

And I'd count "honky" as a slur for a white person. "Gajin", when not used in a wrestling/sports context probably qualifies too.

  109. 100 percent. If Owen had died in a random, out-of-the-ring accident he would've been in the Hall of Fame years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  110. "They included him on that Hart family DVD and were met with a lawsuit soon after it was released..."
The part of her lawsuit where she contested WWE's right to use their footage of Owen was quickly dismissed because WWE was completely within their rights to do it. There's a reason why you don't see Owen action figures or Owen in WWE video games, yet he's on WWE DVDs all the time and is all over the Network. One would require Martha Hart's permission, and the other doesn't.
