Macho Doc

I ended up watching the Macho Man documentary on the Network last night, and I was actually disappointed in a lot of ways.  The first half-hour that they posted a couple of months ago as a teaser was tremendous stuff (covering his baseball career and early Memphis work) but once it gets into the actual meat of his WWF career it really starts to move way too fast and skips around on a lot of important things.  It's like "Bam, he's the IC champion, bam, he loses it to Steamboat, bam, he's the World champion, bam, the Megapowers explode".  It's friggin' MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE, give the guy a full 3 hour documentary!  The WCW section is even worse, literally summing up his run there as "he showed up in WCW, put over DDP, then repackaged himself as Team Madness until the company went out of business".

That being said, everything that's NOT dealing with his in-ring career is tremendous, like the look at his relationship with Elizabeth and her death, and his second marriage.  It's really much more thoughtful and respectful than I ever would have expected.  It's just too bad that as a look at his wrestling career it's pretty lacking.  I'd still check it out on the Network, though, as it's only 90 minutes and it's an easy watch.

  1. I think it's just a case of Wwe giving the fans a reason to spend money, but still not quite forgiving whatever 20+ year grudge Vincent still carries for Savage.

  2. Nah, I don't think it has anything to do with that. They have wasted a lot of good DVD bios with half-assed productions that they could have done a lot more justice. Macho's was just another in that line. Like Scott I thought it wasn't bad, but it could have been so much more.

  3. Macho Man is rolling in his grave with all these bare minimum millennials.

  4. I think they've just not realised how much freedom the network gives them for this stuff. When they're not putting stuff on a disc time restrictions don't matter for documentaries. Eventually they'll make them as long as the material deserves, not 90 minutes because of reasons.

  5. They totally ignored his work with Sherri, which I thought was a shame. It's not a high point of Savage's career, really, but they did some great work together.

  6. The DVD set they released a few years back is a more thorough look at his WWF career. After all, it was his matches that told the story.

I guess at the end of the day, they put Savage in the HOF, and put out a documentary about him in a mostly positive light. If you're a Macho fan (if you're not, I don't want to know you), that's all you can hope for considering the history of the last 20 years.

  8. I bought the blu ray and felt the same way. I felt like they glossed over a lot, especially his feud with Jake, which I don't think was even mentioned. Still entertaining, but I would have liked more in depth looks at his classic matches and feuds.

  9. Yeah. It still seems they inducted Savage almost grudgingly. I kind of thought there would be more fanfare when considering he's one of the most famous wrestlers ever.

Well, everyone 30 and older absolutely knows that to be true. No matter how quiet WWE is about it, we all know he's bigger than that.

  11. Given HHH's penchant for repairing damaged bridges, I wonder if this was one situation where Vince acquiesced to HHH's desire to put Randy in, but only barely.

  12. Exactly. Macho wasn't even the headliner, which shocked me even more.

I think that's more of that they wanted someone alive to be the headliner. And since Nash and HHH are buddies...that's pretty obvious.

I don't know. You could possibly think in this scenario that both Vince and HHH had a little beef with Savage.

  15. It needed at least another hour. That being said, there was a LOT of never before seen photos and such... great stories from his family as well.

  16. Steamboat tearing up at the end was too much for my heart

  17. Unless you're one of the people still clinging to the Macho/Steph rumor (or think that HHH really held that weird one-off comment Savage made where he alluded to it against him), what possible beef could HHH have had with Savage?

They said it in the doc. HHH called Savage a dinosaur, and Savage made that video ripping HHH. I'm not saying it would cause a beef with HHH. I'm just saying it might.
