Regarding you not viewing WWE for a few years..

Hey Scottman,

I read you way back in the late 90's Wrestlezone days and even checked out some of your books. You seemed so enthusiastic and so knowledgable, truly the king of the smark castle. Unfortunately, I kind of got away from 411/Insidepulse/a lot of the smark sites for a few years, so I completely missed out on you dipping out from the E for a few years before rediscovering the BoD again recently. I still remained a WWE fan, though. Sort of. That said, I got back into it again, at least until recently.
I've never been more jaded with WWE than I am right now. So I was wondering what it was that turned you off to the product for that period of time? And what brought you back?

Thanks a lot,
CX

Please don't call me "Scottman".

Anyway, John Cena pretty much drove me away in 2005, combined with losing Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar and the Rock in rapid succession as regular guys.  Plus I had an alternative with WWE 24/7 so I could watch what I REALLY wanted, namely nostalgia shows from the 80s like Primetime Wrestling and old house shows.  It made it really easy to step away from watching on a weekly basis, not to mention getting married and such.

I returned in 2011 because of CM Punk and started doing RAW again because Widro asked me if I wanted to give it a shot again for Insidepulse.  It was fun for a while, but once RAW went to three hours it was no longer fun, it was work, and I already have a full time job that pays me much better.  WWE Network, for all its flaws, is the best thing to ever happen to my writing career on the blog because I can rip through all this old content that's easy to review and I've never seen before.

  1. Speaking of "Scottman", whatever happened to a writer called Scotsman? I remember him being the king of crude wrestling coverage in the early days of the IWC.

  2. How is Brian Alvarez holding up these days? I subscribed to this sheet back in the late 90s before I got internet and enjoyed his work. Also liked his Death of WCW book. I would think not alot of sheet writers at emerged during the late 90s have moved on.

  9. I thought it was pretty good. It was a thoughtful and honest documentary. It was good to hear perspectives from different important people in his life. Enjoyed that Lanny and his Mom would counterpoint a lot of the wrestler's opinions on Savage, leaving it up to you the viewer to decide the truth.

The wrestling part.....honestly, if you need talking heads to tell you more about the Jake feud, or his Macho King reign....just thought it was not necessary. I enjoyed the more private and thoughtful stories of the documentary. I would have rather have had that then a blow by blow of his wrestling career, I don't need a bunch of people telling me how awesome he was. I know that already.

Sure a 3 hour doc would have been awesome, but considering all of the problems between the WWE and Macho....this was probably the very best you could ever get. It was honest.

    ReplyDelete
  10. yeah that was touching. You can tell that universally he was beloved and respected by the wrestlers of his generation...unlike Warrior.

At least he didn't call you Scooter...

Anyway, all the problems and dumb content on the Network be damned, my 9.99 a month MAGGLE goes to having it as a living archive of wrestling content, a one stop resource for me to load up and watch almost any PPV I want, & HOPEFULLY any other RAW/Nitro/TV special I want at some point. Adding the documentaries was an unexpected nice touch, and some of the shows like Rivalries, WM Rewind, and, so sue me, Countdown, are worth watching for me. So that's enough, esp. since I discovered watching wrestling during my lifting routine really helps me stick with it.

  13. Yeah that 2005 - 2011 period was brutal for me as well. The only thing I went out of my way to follow was the 3 month run-up to Flair - HBK at WM24. Weird period. You look back and there WERE some great matches on top thanks mainly to Edge. And Cena had more than a few excellent main event matches too. Yet it was all utterly disposable and unmemorable. No touchstone moments that you instantly look back upon with enthusiasm. I'd argue that there were more moments in 1998 or 1999 alone that I remember more fondly than anything that happened in the '05 - '11 period despite being 16-17 years ago.

I always think next month is the last time I pay for my Observer subscription, but I keep going. All the newsletters and podcasts between Dave, Bryan, & Vinny (and Craig) are definitely worth it and have become part of my daily routine along with this site.

  15. Meh. I mean, HHH has said far worse about Hogan when Hogan and Vince were on the outs and then shook Hogan's hand and palled around with him once Hogan was back in the company's good graces. I don't think it'd be much of an issue.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't think it was anything but half-assed. They went out and spoke to a former teammate of his from the minors. They filmed clips from the tree where he died.

They got some friends of his from radio, someone from Slim Jim....the production was top notch.

We can discuss the content covered, but WWE did not half-ass that.

I didn't just watch TNA all through 2006 because it was on fire, though it absolutely was. That year was so damn brutal for WWE, with all these horrible 80's gimmicks coming back for some reason I could not fathom. Cena losing his nuts, the awkwardness of the DX reunion (though I don't hate that stuff as much as some do), and like Scott said losing all these guys in rapid succession really turned me away. At least the BoD was up and running on LJ by then.

I kind of like how they did it with Ric Flair's two releases. The first release was all about the matches, with blurbs in between that laid out the general time frame and some of the things that went into the matches, whereas the second DVD was largely about Flair's story and life.

It's weird; wrestling has been a lifelong passion of mine, but I've always been kind of... streaky with it. I started watching in late-1989/early-1990, and was religiously devoted to it until mid-1993. I hated the New Generation so much (though Bret Hart is one of my all-time favorites) that it put me off for three years. I started coming around in 1996 when the Ultimate Warrior came back to Raw, and then I was hooked again when I saw an episode of WCW Worldwide recounting Hulk Hogan's heel turn (shocked the HELL out of me), and the following match that featured my all-time in-ring favorite for years, Chris Benoit. I was again religiously devoted to watching wrestling from 1996 until late-2004 after Triple H won the WHC from Orton. I was off-an-on through 2005, 2006 and 2007. After Benoit killed his family in 2007, I was only vaguely aware of wrestling until the Pipebomb Promo in 2011, after which I started following again.

    ReplyDelete
  64. For me, I've been quite steady since I first saw my first match, which was Hogan and Orndorff in the photo-finish cage match, until when Rock and Austin left. With HHH and Taker taking over as the top guys, the rise of Cena and the Benoit murders, my interest has waned considerably. Nowadays, I barely watch but read results and come here and if anything sounds awesome, I'll go look it up on YouTube or watch a RAW/Smackdown rerun.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Each owner gets $X, and the players are auctioned off one at a time, highest bidder winning the player. It's somewhat "fairer" than a normal draft, if possibly slower.

    ReplyDelete
  66. On the balance, I still think the Austin documentary is the best one.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That kind of makes me angry when you consider the purpose then was just to build Taker's confidence in himself so they could get another two to three Manias out of him. Bray didn't even really need to be there. It could've been Big Show or Kane (again).

    ReplyDelete
  74. You realize there was a dude that Scott used to be buddies with called the Scottsman?

    ReplyDelete
  75. The league format determines that... you should have >$10 per player, and I'd guess at least 1/4 (up to 1/2) of your team can be bought for $1-3. You might be surprised how high a few key guys go for.

    ReplyDelete
  76. About 3/4 of the roster you'll probably spend double digits on and then you'll fill out the rest with mid-tier guys for a couple of bucks down to a dollar (minimum bid to select a player). Definitely use the ESPN auction cheat sheet to get a baseline idea of what you'll be spending on players and maybe even do a mock draft just to get a feel of the process; you don't want to blow through your money early to where you're down to only $1 for every spot you have left and get locked out of the middle rounds.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I fell away during the same period except it wasn't because of Cena;it was because Steph and Trips got the book and Vince started his dissent into Alzheimer's and pretty much ruined the product.

They kept making booking decisions that made no sense and pissed off the fans. First Book Dusk get's over and they keep jobbing them out until the point when they finally put the titles on them but their heat was faded by then. Or Booker jobbing out to Trips at Wrestlemania, which still goes down as one of the most offensive booking decisions of all time. Christian get's over with his Peeps gimmick and they just keep jobbing him out until he quits and goes to TNA.The Roman Reign's like pushing of Randy Orton. And of course the reunion of DX and Trips and HBK going over the whole roster by themselves.

The Benoit incident was the final nail for me and just made the whole thing feel stupid and pointless. The fact that someone would injure themselves into madness for a fake sport made it all seem so sad.

I would turn it on every now and then from 07 on but every time I did Trips or Randy were going over someone. Or there some stupid gimmick like the Boogieman or that angle with the chick with the mole on her face. I don't even remember what it was but I just remember it was mind numbingly stupid.

Then the Summer of Punk happened but when I turned that on Punk is jobbing to Trips and Nash. I tried again the next year and Bryan is jobbing to Sheamus in 18 seconds, then Brock comes back to job to Cena in his first match.

It wasn't until Bryan won at Wrestlemania last year that I thought there was a chance they would actually do something right for once. Actually, don't know why I keep watching because since then they have pretty much gone back to the same stupid booking.

I'll at least give them credit for making the switch to Rollins at Wrestlemania and giving the IC title to Bryan. Though that's still them pushing the guy they don't like to the curtain jerkin segment and Reigns in the main event.

    ReplyDelete
  78. What funny is, that period from '05 to like '08 was actually a mini-boom period for WWE because of Cena and Batista. Ratings trended upward for a while and the company was making good money off a safe model of "TV, PPV, DVD, repeat." The reason no one really bothers to mention this is because there was nothing innovative about this period.

Rock N Wrestling is the Golden Age and the Attitude Era the Silver Age precisely because they completely altered how the show was being presented. The Cena era was entirely against that. It only wanted to rely on things that had been successful in those other two eras. Which makes sense because the company was much more focused on its stock value and diversifying its assets (WWE Studios, expanding merch, TV deals, etc.) than it was on the content of the product.

Even today, the company moves at a snail's pace when it decides to change something. DBry is probably the best example as the company took forever to get behind him and immediately abandoned him when they saw the opportunity, but even RAW as a production hasn't dramatically changed its presentation in almost twenty years. Think about that. RAW initially went through at least three distinct styles of presentation in its first five years (debut in 1993, New Generation era circa 1995, and then pre-Attitude buildup in 1997), but hasn't really been altered since then.

2005 to 2011 was mostly forgettable because it was a horrible clash of eras, trying to take safe superheros and mix them with crude jokes and Vince's personal ideas on fetish play. So there wasn't really anything to miss, and lord, I can't wait to see how the nostalgia train works on that one. Are we going to get Shaniqua and the Bashams popping up at a Wrestlemania in 2021 like we do with the New Age Outlaws?

I really like it because everyone has a shot at every player (no auto draft generator will determine who gets Trout at #1) and its a true test of GM skills I'm building your roster; do you break the bank for a few stars, do you try to go for a balanced approach with cheaper guys, do you pay whatever it takes to get your guy or do you go with a Plan B, etc.

JBL, Undertaker, Booker T, Flair, Shawn aren't active but are a part of the family. Benoit, Eddie, Test are dead. Edge, Christian, Rey could only come back as talkers and couldn't actually do anything.

I have a feeling RVD is going to be the Sgt Slaughter of the 2020 era nostalgia tours where he shows up for everything. If Angle would finally retire and get off drugs he could be there also. After that you gotta go real low on the totem pole. Carlito?

I was taking heat from Mrs. Stranger for watching the half-naked Divas and some of the more "adult" storylines. She challenged me to stop watching for one month. I did her one better: I stopped watching for two and half years. But I continued to watch older stuff during that time.

  95. 2003 RAW was awful. Almost all the 2003 PPVs sucked. 2004 Smackdown was a tedious piece of shit with RAW only having saving moments of grace once every 3 months. And again the PPVs generally were full of shit. Those two years killed their interest in WWE quite easily.

    ReplyDelete
  96. For me it was the formation of the Mega Powers. Hated wrestling until that point though my older brother was always trying to turn it on. Then I happened to turn on a recap show that was replaying Hogan saving Savage from Honky and the Harts and I was hooked. Was obsessed from that point until late 94 when Diesel won the title. Then Mabel won the king of the ring and I was like "Fuck this shit."

I was more into WCW in 94 anyway. We didn't have cable so I would watch the Saturday night show from Universal. Once that went off the air and they both went to 12 PPVs I couldn't keep up.

Came back in 97 because, well I was 18 and had a job and could pay for cable myself. But also because all my friends were talking about the NWO. Which made me check out what WWF was doing and all the WCW guys I liked from the early 90s were showing up in WWF. Foley, Austin, Pillman, Vader, Johnny B Badd (haha just kidding). I was way more interested in watching these guys get a chance on top then I was watching washed up guys from WWF like Hogan and Savage (and Nash; he was still boring) that my friends were talking about.

The screwjob happened; the internet happened; found all these wrestling sites; starting learning about the back stage stuff and I was hooked again,

It was funny cause I kept telling my friends that WWF was better then WCW yet they were stuck on the guys they remembered from our youth. But then after Wrestlemania 14 all of a sudden everyone is an Austin fan and WWF is cool again and WCW sucks.

  98. Triple H and Candice Michelle getting oral under a table was the saddest sign of them still trying to push the envelope

  99. Wasn't Scotsman the one who won the WM trip a few years ago courtesy of some Mick Foley contest, and then in his report proceeded to brag about all the times he and his friend tried to drop insider terms and knowledge around the wrestlers only to receive awkward silences and "the fuck is wrong with you, idiot?" looks?

  100. If that's true, that's hilarious that he runs the site dedicating to making fun of this one.

  107. And Hogan spins another one of his tall tales, about how Macho's doctor told Hulk that the day he took his mom in for an appointment, the doc wanted Mach to have some sort of heart test. Had he done that, Doctor Hulk sez, he wouldn't have had the heart attack that led to his death. I'm pretty sure there are HIPA lawas preventing doctors from sharing that kind of info with other patients, even if it involves a dead guy.

  108. What books are in the "Kindle Lending Library?" Specifically, any chess strategy books? I was thinking about buying a Kindle for access to the library (since I'm already and Amazon Prime member anyway).

    ReplyDelete
  109. Problem is Lanny' s speech was awful and the HoF should not be headlined by some dude spouting grade school poetry.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Also Hogan wore yellow tights because of Angelo Poffo, and was inspired to grow bitch titties cause of Elizabeth.

  111. They don't have to make a 90 minute documentary. They can make a 3 hour one if they want. We shouldn't have to choose between "thoughtful personal history" and "thorough professional history." We should get both.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Oh, Punk and AJ won't give a shit. But WWE (i.e. Vince) is vindictive enough to do it anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The weird part is I've never been to Minnesota

    ReplyDelete
  114. Yeah, Hogan getting the very last word on the documentary.. something else that could have been improved.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Yep. And even if Lanny was OK with it, I just don't like Hogan inducting Macho Man into the HOF. Even if he's not the greatest speaker in the world, Steamboat would have been perfectly appropriate. Otherwise, DDP could have made sense, and he can speak well.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Sit back, close your eyes and imagine a Randy Savage HOF speech. What would he possibly say?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Last three wrestling docs I watched: The Sheik, Tales of Masked Men, and Wrestling for Jesus. All were pretty good.

  118. "hulk hogan, I've got one thing to say to you brother" (lower voice) "but a brother who isn't *really* a brother, you know what I'm saying" (now shouting, rips glasses off) "BE A MAN HOGAN!! LUST IN YOUR EYES!! LUST IN YOUR EYES!!" (Mic cuts out, security comes)
    "DIG IT!"

  119. Savage was a lunatic for over a decade, and the IWC (myself included) treats him like a wrestling god.

    ReplyDelete
  120. The hbk one was pretty good as well

    ReplyDelete
  121. I agree warrior was ahead of the others he knew the business and knew what he meant to the wwf. He was the only guy before austin to get close to hogan on the money scale.to me hes like a c.m punk.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Hogan absolutely made the most sense. He's the person most commonly associated with Savage. Frankly it would have seemed strange for anybody else to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Way off topic, but what's the deal with some of the blurring/censoring of WWF on recent shows like the Hall of Fame and on WWE.com photos of the Attitude Era belt? I thought they no longer had to censor any WWF mentions.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Razor agreed to go to WCW first back in FEB 96. Nash decided a week or so after.

    ReplyDelete
  125. The IWC also doesn't generally like "slaves to the script", and yet that was Savage's entire in-ring career.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I think his 'ramblings' were a breath of fresh air then the constant politically correct nonsense forced upon us daily. I don't agree with everything he's said but he brings some interesting perspectives and supports his points well so to dismiss him because you might be more liberal is sadly misguided.

    ReplyDelete
  127. "I remember the way Savage fucked me the same way my father fucked the feds in 1994".

  128. I actually thought the hall of fame on a whole got very little publicity this year. The most coverage was by far given to Connor and the guy who headlined last year.

  132. Well the guy has wrestled entire countries!

    ReplyDelete
  133. He also hates ducks!

  134. A couple times that year....that's all

    ReplyDelete
  135. I've never gotten why the script thing would bug anybody as a fan. We're not privy to the nuts-and-bolts of putting a match together when it happens, just the end result.

    ReplyDelete
  136. In general, script guys = not good workers. Warrior, Goldberg, Shane Douglas had some eh matches.......

    ReplyDelete
  137. But fans only know "script guys" when they're told who it is. All that matters is the end result. Savage had more great matches than most wrestlers in the history of this country. DDP had a lot of great ones too. Bret wasn't a "script guy," but liked to plan out matches.

    ReplyDelete
  138. If Steiner never said that, you should be a "member of creative." That made me laugh out loud.
