Saturday Afternoon Thread

To prevent the other threads from being hijacked by NBA playoffs discussions (since games are taking place throughout the day), or the day's MLB and NHL action, here's this one!

United are more than holding their own against Chelsea so far.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Sid tossing his papers at Hogan during the WM VIII press conference announcing Hogan as #1 contender was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Wizards-Raptors has been awful so far. Neither team can shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  4. In a strange scheduling choice. There's a top of the table clash between Utd & Chelsea happening at the same time as a FA Cup semi final between Arsenal & Reading.

Currently watching the Utd game live and following the FA cup match via a liveblog.

  5. Yay my Union made an agreement with my school district. 10% raise over 2 years plus 6% back pay for a year. First raise in 8 years. We were ready to strike over this.

Just has to be approved by the union members and school board.

  6. Wizards are getting inside, which is something they are actually good at and should do more often.

  7. Now Mister, let's not get controversial.

What are some of the best and worst things about your city?

Trying out this Babadook movie on Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Damn Chelsea made that goal look way too easy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's somewhat far from the Beltway, and the primary road has tolls.

  14. Manchester
Best: The multiculturalism, I can go from the gay village, to Chinatown, to curry mile, etc within seconds and everybody is welcome everywhere. (we'll ignore the few idiots)

Bad: The serial killer. We currently have a serial killer who is targeting men in their 20s (IE guys like me) He find them on a night out and drowns them in a canal. Because of the impact it would have on people going into Manchester at night and having a few drinks especially around the Canal areas, the killing have kept being put down to freak occurrences and one offs so theres next to no media coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Best: weather (today 80 degrees and sunny)
Worst: traffic (why is there traffic at 10am on a Saturday)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Toronto.

    Best:
Very low crime rate for a city it's size.
    Decent food and music scene.
Relatively good employment opportunities, white collar anyhow

    Worst:
    Terrible mass transit
    High cost of living
    Out of control condo development
General sense of blandness that I can't really describe

    ReplyDelete

I'm surprised Undertaker vs. Papa Shango was never a PPV program.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Didn't we get taker vs Kama instead on ppv?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, that was a house show-style program/Coliseum Video feud.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If it was the monthly PPV era, it would have been, but it ran on house shows for a couple of months.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:13 AM

Better off that way too. I'm just surprised it was never a "Casket Match" or something on PPV, with a bunch of cheesy supernatural build up

    ReplyDelete
  22. Best things: Lots of green space within the city, small enough that you can walk from one end of it to the other in an hour, very safe. Also it's a big tourist centre and very muticultural

Worst things: Small town mentality, not much in the way of nightlife or entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah. Instead, they gave that feud to Kamala, who faced UT at SummerSlam and then Survivor Series in a casket match.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:14 AM

Instead of ShockmasterMania~! and the Harlem Heat in 'WarGames' at Fall Brawl '93, how about:

Rick Rude, Vader, & the Hollywood Blondes vs.
Four Horsemen (one-night reunion): Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Sid Vicious, & Sting

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also it's absolutely terrible if you want to drive around it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Had to switch to the national feed of the Wiz at Raps. The local was overly biased and annoying.

    Glad it's Doris Bruke too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ...that was a terrible scrambling extended possession...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh God, they're doing the obnoxious shots of the Raptors fans outside the arena again. We get it, they're Canadian.

    ReplyDelete
  29. So flair would still turn on sting?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ignoring the Gimmick Battle Royal, Kamala only had 2 PPV matches for the WWF. both against Undertaker in 1992. You'd think they could have done more with him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maple Leaf Square. It's a big thing downtown during important games. Huge sports bar there too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Western conference can keep the best of 7 but the eastern should be best of 3. None of the matchups are interesting

    ReplyDelete
  33. That's unheard of!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:17 AM

After Slamboree '93, I thought they could have emphasized Vader-Sid and Flair-Rude as programs. Sting already had the issues with Rude and Vader. Rude beating Arn and Windham kind of sets things up. Have the Flair/AA/Sid contingent in a tweener role where Sting doesn't really trust them, but is willing to team up once against a common enemy. Barry Windham would be better than Sting in this position, but he was gone by Fall Brawl

    ReplyDelete
  35. For real, if this was a wrestling card all the ECF matchups would be on the pre-show.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah I like Doris Burke.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:19 AM

Yeah, I think a Papa Shango, Kamala, & Headshrinkers stable would have made sense too. Kamala was supposed to face BamBam at Wrestlemania 9 too.

    For Delhi:

    The good stuff:

    1) Heritage:We have loads of monuments and historical sites, most of which are well maintained.Easily the best aspect of the city.
    2) Our metro system is the envy of the country.
3)Green parks, especially in South and Central Delhi
    4)The food
5)People from all over the country

    The bad

1)Traffic/road rage:No regard for traffic rules at all.Everyone here drives as of they have to go home and fuck Katrina Kaif.
2)Pollution.WHO says we're the most polluted city in the world, and with good reason. Not a day goes by where you don't see dozens of pedestrians wearing masks.
3)Large number of illegal slums and shantytowns settled by migrants from the poorest parts of the country. They're increasing by the day and I expect nothing will be done bout it for a long time.
    4)Pretty unsafe,especially for women.
    5)No nightlife.

  48. I went round India when I was a kid. I was too young to remember much specifically about Delhi, but I remember being annoyed that they didn't have Campa Cola (which was nice) and having to drink Thums Up (which was rank) instead. The Taj Mahal and Red Fort were just down the road though and they were awesome. I had loads of fun jumping around off all the open staircases at the Red Fort.

  51. All the NBA playoffs should be best of 3, with maybe the finals being best of 5 tops... maybe even less.

It makes sense in baseball because you're facing different pitchers and whatnot. But the same 5 guys vs the same 5 guys really doesn't mean anything.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I preferred when the first round was best of 5.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Fiance 30 minutes ago, "It's so nice out, let's go outside."

Haven't heard from her since. I've been outside since I woke up at 8am.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The last dominating team UNC had.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The Truth is up North!

It's hard to cheer for the guy since he was a Celtic, but he's holding the Wizards together right now.

    ReplyDelete
  61. There are too many time stoppages in just about all of the major sports. Football is practically criminal.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm sure he means overall.

Yes, it's pretty annoying. On the other hand, it rests the stars, so we get to see them play more.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Baseball is the worst.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Baseball is getting a bit better with these pacing rules. At-bats are going by quicker this year and commercial breaks between innings seem to be shorter.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It's always hilarious when you have two pretty fast teams...and then Pierce slows everything down.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:34 AM

    Survivor Series 1992 Retcon:

    - Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels, WWF vs. IC Titles

    - Randy Savage, Mr. Perfect, & Legion of Doom vs.
Ric Flair, Razor Ramon, Ted Dibiase, & IRS

    - Papa Shango, Kamala, & The Headshrinkers vs.
The Undertaker, Crush, & Natural Disasters

    - Big Boss Man, The Bushwhackers, & Virgil vs. Nailz, Nasty Boys, & Repo Man

    - Rick Martel, Beverly Bros., & The Genius (or Brooklyn Brawler) vs. Tatanka, High Energy, & Tito Santana

    - Yokozuna vs. Jim Duggan

    ReplyDelete
  67. Beal keeps missing 3's in the worst ways possible.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Maybe he can oversell another injury and leave the court on a wheelchair before coming back out five minutes later.

    ReplyDelete
  69. LOD were gone by Series '92, though, right?

    ReplyDelete
  70. He's been pretty bad this year. I've been talking about it all season. He's never looked right.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Doris just talked about Lowery's girth.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I like John Wall a lot, so that's why I want the Wizards to win this series, but the Wizards is such a lame name. Although tasteless, I liked the "Bullets" name.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:36 AM

Yeah, I think you're right. Damn Rocco gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Especially when the first round usually sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  75. City you would never want to live in (first world countries)?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Wizards are definitely going way. It'll probably be the Monuments within the next 4 years.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Who does everyone like in this series? I like Washingtons team better for a playoff series. But Randy Wittman.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'd prefer the Generals or something more patriotic. It's the freakin' U.S. Capitol city!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I didn't realise it was that far. We were still able to get there and back on the same day though.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh good, then people can start calling them "The Mons!" The Urban Dictionary crowd will love it!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Bret needed a top challenger. I would do a triple threat with flair and savage

    ReplyDelete
  82. Ha, good choice. Although you'd have lots of vacant space in Detroit!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Wizards. Pierce is a pretty big deal in a series like this.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Very cheap housing prices

    ReplyDelete
  85. I picked Washington in 7.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dammit, the Generals doesn't work anymore now that they're actually decent.

    ReplyDelete
  87. If you're going to say LOD stayed... Warrior stays as well. Warrior, Savage, and LOD make the greatest four man team in history.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Saint John (New Brunswick, Canada)

    ReplyDelete
  89. All Washington teams should be Capitals.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:39 AM

No one did triple threats in 1992 though. I do think they should have done Bret vs. Flair, Title vs. Career at Royal Rumble '93 though. Hart really did need established challengers at that point

    ReplyDelete
  91. Of cities that I've been to, Paris. It's pretty dirty.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Anything in the Deep South. I'll go with Birmingham, Alabama

    ReplyDelete
  93. Historically, though, WWE wasn't doing that kinda match in 1992.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Really? Hard to believe. He did a bunch if msg house shows against hogan though.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Why NOT Chicago?

But for my answer, New York City.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Don't really care because neither team has a shot at winning the east

    ReplyDelete
  97. Political corruption, high taxes, growing pension crisis, high homicide rate, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  98. That's why I like them better. Very even teams though.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Sheffield or Liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  100. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:41 AM

Yeah, agreed. If we assume that none of us would actually book the Rocco nonsense, then hopefully LOD stays. If you can get the Warrior to stay, then the "MegaManiac Warriors of Motherfucking Doom" foursome of Savage/Warrior/Hawk/Animal would have been epic.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Redskins would be good

    ReplyDelete
  102. No ones beating the cavs so it's all a formality really

    ReplyDelete
  103. I want this to happen, just because whenever the team goes into the tank, sports stories can talk about how they're "as ineffective as actual Washington Senators."

    ReplyDelete
  104. Cena vs Orton,one more timeApril 18, 2015 at 11:41 AM

Tokyo(would like to go there as a tourist though)

    ReplyDelete
  105. This Chelsea/Utd game could end up anywhere from 3-0 to 1-3 and anything inbetween.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:42 AM

I guess with the Bret title win over Flair in Saskatoon, they could have shoe-horned them all into a big Survivor Series elimination match.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Like a nicer version of Detroit.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I know that. But he really needed a former world champ in that match. 2 would be better

    ReplyDelete
  109. Washington should be a much better team actually. Wall and Beal are very good, Pierce can still get it done, and better big men. Bench is pretty awful. Washington has better defense too.

But like nothing is clicking with the Wizards right now.

Toronto has the better offense, but their defense is worse. And lack of Playoff experience.

    ReplyDelete
  110. If only Atlanta didn't have all of their injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I've only had layovers there. I know a few people from there who had a fondness for there. I think I would like to visit there in the next few years

    ReplyDelete
  112. The best thing for the Wizards would have been for them to miss the playoffs, just because Randy Wittman hit his ceiling a looooooong time ago. But LOLEasternConference

    ReplyDelete
  113. Wouldn't matter. Cavs would wipe the floor with them either way

    ReplyDelete
  114. Had injuries not destroyed my Trail Blazers, I'd be excited for the Playoffs. I fully expect Memphis yo beat Portland in 5, maybe 6 games.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I found a random betting slip that has the Rockets winning the West at +600. I must have made that bet while I was drunk or something, but GO Rockets!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I've had a few people that I trust tell me that it's a wonderful city for visiting, I'm not sure about living there.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:44 AM

They could have just run a Bret vs. Flair re-match too, since no one outside of Saskatchewan actually saw his title win. Mr. Perfect stays heel and leads the charge against Macho/Warrior to keep that angle going. When Warrior leaves, make it either Savage vs. Perfect, or do Hart & Savage vs. Flair & Perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  118. No, it would matter.

    ReplyDelete
  119. No Bill Simmons for the half time show in the playoffs is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:45 AM

The NBA really has some terrible team names

    ReplyDelete
  121. It doesn't even matter. Leonsis doesn't fire people.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I've legit seen them for under $1000, but they're the only livable place on the street.

    ReplyDelete
  123. HQ definitely slapped him down, but gave him the Grantland Basketball Hour to make him happy.

    ReplyDelete
  124. As a born and raised Oregonian, I can tell you Portland feels like it's own weird country

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  126. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:47 AM

If comic books were wrestling, would the Survivor Series be headlined with Justice League vs. The Avengers or JLA vs. X-Men?

    ReplyDelete
  127. And the LA Kings continue to fall apart:

    http://deadspin.com/report-jarret-stoll-arrested-for-possession-of-ecstasy-1698636446

So this season we've had domestic abuse and drug possession. Can we get the hat trick before the playoffs are over? Johnny Quick, go shoot someone at a bar!

    ReplyDelete
  128. I stand by what I said in the thread from a few days ago. We need to inject sci-fi into team names. Give us robots, cyborgs, and machines! There's no law that says these team names have to be animal motifs. Besides, there's a freakin' RAPTORS, so basis in reality is already out the window.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Justice League vs X-Men
    Avenger vs Teen Tians

    ReplyDelete
  130. I've never been to Detroit, but from the reports I got from people who have, and the general image of the city, I would be hesitant to live there even if my costs of living were outright paid for me.

    X-Factor vs. X-Force in a battle of also-rans
    Suicide Squad vs. Hellfire Club

    ReplyDelete
  132. Are the players that bored because they didn't make the playoffs?

    ReplyDelete
  133. It was okay. I think Jalen and Zac are just trolling Bill at this point. They picked against the Celtics at every turn (rightfully so though). To be fair, Simmons isn't saying Celts can win. He's hoping they'll take 2 games. 1 is already a stretch, but 2 is basically impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Superman vs. Spider-Man.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Lakers, clippers, jazz, pelicans, Knicks, pistons, Wizards, blazers, thunder, Spurs all suck.

    ReplyDelete
  137. 20 years ago, it would have been JLA and X-Men, but not so much anymore.

Right now, your teams are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Green Lantern vs. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye

    ReplyDelete
  138. Superman vs hulk (which is basically cena vs Lesnar)

    ReplyDelete
  139. I didn't mind Perfect Pitch, but leave it off my NBA.

    ReplyDelete
  140. The NBA playoffs is also where we get god awful video/music packages. I miss NBC's Roundball rock.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:55 AM

    SuperMan vs. Hulk
Batman (w/Robin) vs. Captain America (w/Bucky)
Aquaman vs. Namor (double DQ as they destroy the whole world in the process)
Joker & Riddler vs. Wolverine & Cyclops (battle of disfunctional partners)
    Wonder Woman vs. Ms. Marvel
    Green Arrow vs. Hawkeye
    Cyborg vs. IronMan
    Flash vs. Quicksilver
    Green Lantern vs. Silver Surfer
    Suicide Squad vs. Fantastic Four

    ReplyDelete
  142. JLA (Superman, Batman, Green lantern, Martian Manhunter & Green Arrow) vs X-Men (Wolverine, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler & Iceman)

Teen Titans (Nightwing, Flash, Arsenal, Beast Boy & Superboy) vs The Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Spiderman & Thor)

Wonder Woman, Donna Troy, Black Canary, Supergirl & Catwoman Vs Storm, Black Widow, Wasp, Jean Grey & Spider Woman)

    Wonder Woman vs. Ronda Rousey

    ReplyDelete
  144. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:57 AM

How long before Ronda Rousey gets cast in a Marvel or DC movie?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Toronto fans cheer as Pierce appears to injure his shoulder. Raps may win this series, but the basketball Gods are unforgiving judges.

    ReplyDelete
  146. We're getting that at Wrestlemania 32.

    ReplyDelete
  147. The Simmons/ESPN dynamic continues to baffle me. ESPN constantly pushes Simmons with shit that would make any other man with self-respect walk out, yet Simmons will never pull the trigger and leave, even though Fox or NBC would probably bust through his front door with a tank full of money if he did.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Voynov's domestic issues were MONTHS ago, early in the regular season. As for Stoll... he's a dumbass here.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogApril 18, 2015 at 11:59 AM

If Dana White wants to stick it to Vince McMahon, he should get CM Punk & Ronda Rousey in some big Hollywood movies

    ReplyDelete
  150. More likely in DC I think, with her Rock connection.

    ReplyDelete
  151. The money is in a Rousey guest spot on SHIELD. Rousey/Agent May would get all the viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Really, the best way for Dana White to stick it to Vince is to simply veto anymore Rousey appearances on WWE TV. It's that simple.

  160. I saw the thread title and thought Hulk Hogan got into a Twitter beef with the BoD's Jobber. I was about to ask how Hogan sunk so low so quickly.

  163. Other than the Joker/Ridder v X-Men one, which looks like an X-Men route, those are pretty good.

  164. Simmons talked about how he made it to ESPN 2 weeks ago. Basically, he toiled with his own website and columns, wasn't sure if was going to make it or not. ESPN had their eye on him for a while, and finally grabbed him. Simmons worked out, asked for more $$$ and time off, and ESPN agreed with him.

So basically Simmons not only owes ESPN for the game, but ESPN actually respected/recognized his hard work enough to compensate him for it.

Simmons isn't leave. He feels like he owes John Skipper.

  167. Judgment Day 2008 is that rare card where everything hovers around the 3 star mark making for a consistently fun watch. I like shows like that.

Joker turns on his partner, shivs him, and Riddler gets squashed by the X-Man contingent. Joker (w/Harley) cashes in his Money in the Bank briefcase during the SuperMan vs. Hulk main event and wins the title. ;-)

  170. Can't believe Drew Gooden is still hanging around.

  171. The Wiz are playing more like last year's Wiz, which is why they have the lead. Still, I bet the Wiz start floundering a bit once Pierce goes to the bench.

    Of what? Good basketball?

  174. It's terribly overhyped as the best thing ever but IMO is above average that is bolstered by the acting performances.

  175. Not a bad showing by United today even if they can't pull this one out

  176. Ditto for Sam Dalembert before the Knicks cut him

  177. We're losing 1-0 to the champions when we are decimated by injuries it's not a devastating defeat and we played well throughout most of the match.

  178. DC United isn't the franchise it used to be.

  179. There were bunch of cards around that time, like Bragging Rights and Survivor Series 09, that were like that; nothing classic but a bunch of solid 15-minute matches for three hours.

  180. Yeah it's a loss where I don't feel bad considering the circumstances. It's pretty amazing second place is even still in play considering how badly we started the season

  181. I hate this timewasting shit we're seeing now though.

  182. Remember when people thought they were the favorites in the East? That was a fun two weeks.

  185. You missed a crazy season, Western Conference ball had a shit ton of ****1/2+ games.

  186. I don't like that shit either, it's as bad as Chelsea's timewasting.

  188. He's tied to ESPN and they to him at this point. He's executive producer/creator behind 30 for 30 which is the best thing ESPN has done in 10+ years. He has the podcast, runs Grantland, still does TV and writes occasionally. He's making millions to do things he enjoys and probably finds creatively fulfilling. He can't just leave all that stuff behind. And ESPN can't really fire him unless he screws up something fierce. They're married, for better or for worse.

It was only about 18 months ago that he won a power struggle with Magic freaking Johnson in ESPN-land, so obviously his political game in Bristol is stronger than people give him credit for.
