Scrap the Intercontinental Title

Hi Scott,

With Daniel Bryan seemingly about to go on the injured list again, do you think the WWE should just decommission the I-C Title? The belt has had zero prestige since 1999 or so, and the second half of last year saw The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Luke Harper and Wade Barrett ping-ponging the title back and forth.

In contrast the U.S Title has been very strongly represented by Rusev and now John Cena, raising it to that semi-main event prestige once held by the I-C title. Maybe do a unification match or have Triple-H and Stephanie declare the title retired due to Bryans status (or have Repo Man repossess the title and never be seen from again :)

Your thoughts?

They already tried getting rid of it in 2002.  It didn't stick then and wouldn't stick now.  It'll probably just get bounced back to Wade Barrett and become the same loser title it's been for years again.

Comments

  1. Uh, let's not start sucking the U.S. title's dick just yet. Cena's held the thing for less than a month and has so far defended it against Dean Ambrose and two jobbers (not to be redundant) and Rusev may very well win it back at ER given that it's the WWE's favorite Cena match: the one he can lose without being pinned or submitted or lose by fluky circumstance.

Let's not act like Cena suddenly lowering himself to the U.S. title somehow fixed the years of damage done to it during various periods where I honestly couldn't have told you off the top of my head who the champion was.

As for the IC title? I can't imagine why the WWE doesn't hold a section of fans who change their minds about what they want every 3 days in very high regard.

    ReplyDelete
  2. A unification with Cena going over and maintaining the U.S. Title as the belt he carries and defends makes logical sense. Having one true "secondary" championship where champions get booked with long, meaningful title reigns should work well.

You mentioned that scrapping the IC Title "wouldn't stick" because they tried getting rid of it before, but why did they bring it back? The brand split? That's no longer a thing. Tradition? Fans in 2015 don't necessarily have the first-hand memories of the former prestige of the IC Title that fans did in 2002. Neither of the secondary titles mean what they used to mean, in the eyes of the modern fan, so unification ought to be able to work.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I actually think Rusev has done more for the U.S. title than Cena, at this point. He was booked like a monster and while it was a largely predictable defeat at WM, Rusev losing was made to be a big deal. I wouldn't complain if he did win it back at Extreme Rules.

It's not the length of the title reigns that matter. It's who is feuding over them. Ambrose had the thing for a year and the belt became just a part of his outfit. It didn't mean a thing. Rusev and Cena have given the title the rub and whoever is the next guy in line other than those two will also be made to be a big deal, because he would have had to defeat one of those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  4. The Intercontinental Title is the new European Title. May as well treat it like that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Don't forget that there were times where Ambrose didn't even bring the belt with him. Granted, it was for matches where the title wasn't on the line, but still.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Just give the title to Ziggler, who can fit in Bryan's spot as fighting champion, and let him hold it for a few months.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The second paragraph is *****.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I say give it to Roman Reigns ... seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Bryan probably couldn't take Cena's ridiculous springboard stunner.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That would have been a great idea a year ago.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why not have rusev win the ic belt?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Can only go ****3/4 because he said "brand split" when we all know it was a brand extension

    ReplyDelete
  14. WWE's booking style along with how they mute certain crowd responses as if somehow its insulting, doing no favours for either the belt or the mid card roster. WWE are such a weird backwards company.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That'd be sorta funny, but Bryan would make it work.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No way. He'd get booed out of the building by the smarks at the HOF ceremony.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Quebecers coming back was lame because they didn't have their Mountie outfits anymore. It took away from their presence IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Savio Vega was a terrible choice, as he simply wasn't good enough or over enough for the spot but he and Los Boriquas had been helping out DX for months before hand so it made some sense instory at least.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, made sense with some of the story and at least Russo blew that off a few weeks later by DX allowing Savio into the group and then beating him down ala Jim Neidhart.

But in kayfabe, I'm sure Austin, Foley, Owen, and the gang were quaking in their boots at the thought of facing Savio!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Or let the fans "choose":

    3)Submissions are banned

Its odd that there are a couple posts on here that both have to do with IYH No Way Out (of texas). This one and the Quebecers comeback and match against the Godwins. Its amazing the things we can recall from 17 years ago, but forget shit from a couple years/months/weeks ago because things are so played out now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The vignettes would be hilarious...if WWE ever cared about those anymore.

go meta and call the stable "Evil Foreigners"

    ReplyDelete
  29. Absolutely. I think the characters were a lot more distinctive as well (for better or worse), which helps. Giving at least SOME motivation for feuds and letting guys wrestle in more unique ways also contributes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will say that they made that a small plot point when they were teasing Shield tension with Reigns busting on him for never defending. That's more than we usually get.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I can't wait for the Nash promo where he misidentifies a a verb as an adjective.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Unite them and keep the IC title. Then they can bring back the european title for the undercard.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Divas division really desperately needs squash matches. The women's indie scene right now is insanely packed with talent, they could easily find a decent jobber in any B-level town. When your division has six people, making them trade wins and feud with each other endlessly gets no one over.

At least they stumbled into an interesting heel turn. If only they had a face champion so there could be a title feud in it.

nah they at least had a couple fun brawls. LB and DOA never had anything like that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. WWE sees Reigns as so far above those three guys and the like. They truly believe guys like Big Show and Kane are the only believable threats to Reigns because size. Even though those guys haven't been booked like they're threats to anybody since the late 90s.

Like I said below, I truly think once the Reigns/Rollins thing happens, Reigns will be booked to demolish him for the title

Depends on what you're going for I guess. Id always start with "With a tear in MY EYE . . " but for comedy I love the 2 + 2 = Thomas Jefferson SUCKA or Edge talking about Billy Gunning the KOTR victory. I have a soft spot for one single thing in the Rock's return was his rock concert and song about Vicki "You dress like a hooker, not the expensive kind". I know its childish and whatnot but it was delivered sooo well.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have to go with Jarrett.

For what it's worth, he founded a company and kept it afloat and made it a legitimate player on top of having an enviable career of his own.

He's not the the guy that set fire to TNA and plucked his violin as it burned to the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I really think you need to have a good understanding of where each belt is in the pecking order. Always a fan of the WCW/NWA take on World-US-TV. Would like to unify the current mid-card belts and introduce the TV Title as a lower card title to build people up.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "Who are you to doubt El Dandy?"

I know the joke has been made over and over but it still shocks me that BRET HART was the one to deliver this incredible promo. Bret's one of my favourite all-time wrestlers but for him to deliver one of the best comedic promos ever is still surreal.

Honestly, if Bryan has to hang it up, I'd be ok with it. He's had a solid career, won every title in WWE, gained the respect of the fans, got married, made tons of money, and would be possibly be one of the few fan picked wreslters that would actually leave the company on good terms.

Well yeah, him leaving would be great for his well being, but bad for us.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I agree. Especially in Bryan's case, what's the point of an invasive surgery that only MIGHT work, (but also possibly mess you up worse), when even if you get back to 100%, you've already peaked as a performer because of the dicks running things? Yeah, there's more money in the comeback than agent or trainer or announcer, but he doesn't seem money obsessed.

Unless whatever doctor he goes to is supremely confident treatment can get him back to 100% with little risk, call it a day

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't see why he can't gut through life threatening injuries in order to entertain me!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I thought titles didnt mean anything?

So why would people clamor for unifications and makings of NEW belts or bringing back old belts, if belts dont mean anything.

Would sentiment be to try and establish the belts FIRST before scrapping a belt once word that top guy has an injury?

What about using that injury to put heat on anpther guy or make a new star and give that heat and rub to the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If Bryan retires, I'm gonna feel pretty guilty. My little brother has always really wanted to see Bryan wrestle live, and we were gutted he wasn't on Raw. I didn't think there'd be a dark match so I made us high-tail it after the Orton/Rollins segment finished, turns out Bryan WAS in a six man dark match after Raw went off the air. I can never tell my brother about this.

    ReplyDelete
  69. They like selling replica belts of the IC and US belts, so I don't see either going away.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "LOOK AT THE ADJECTIVE!" is a line that my brother and I have used for the last 18 years.

And by brother I mean "someone born from the same parents", not in the Hogan sense of "brother."

    ReplyDelete
  71. I like that Scott takes note of the most overlooked aspect of the NWO angle's success-how well the announcers sell it. Over the coming months, all of the commentators do a fantastic job of selling the danger of the "invading army", and making it all sound like it mattered so, so much. It might be the best example of announcing helping an angle that I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  72. How so? WCW was using a character that WWF created. If Jason Alexander showed up on Modern Family essentially playing George Costanza, you bet your ass Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld would sue.

Watch footage of Scott Hall pre-WWF. He's completely different.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Because it's acting. Christian Bale can't show up and play Batman in a Marvel movie.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I like using the injury as an angle. What if say Bryan had a match with Ziggler, and Ziggler while "showing off" accidentally "injures" Bryan? Maybe have Ziggler start second guessing himself. It could make for interesting character development.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I find Barrett to be a very unique worker, in that he only really seems to excel when matches go past a certain amount of time - if a match is only 5-10 minutes, he's not that interesting, but let it go 15+, and he does a fantastic job of selling the drama of near-falls and losing strength/energy.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Since Smackdown is going to USA, have the US belt defended every week on RAW and the IC belt defended every week on Smackdown.

    ReplyDelete

  79. Meltzer reported that WWE DVD sales are down 70% this year so far. How's that Steph workout DVD selling?

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's what I say. Some people say that gave away Hogan's turn. That's in hindsight. Fans watching live didn't believe Hogan turned until after he dropped that leg on Savage.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Wasn't DVD sales tanking expected and budgeted for with the launch of the Network however?

    ReplyDelete
  82. It just occurred to me that Cena is doing what HHH wouldn't do. When the brand split happened, we were supposed to get the WWE title on one show and the IC title on the other. But HHH couldn't have a secondary title, so they somehow had two world titles.

Cena isn't pulling that, so good for him.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I've long said that the titles should be unified into a true TV title, with the champion having to defend on every Raw, SD, and PPV. Very simple step to making the midcard important. And they can still call it the IC title and keep the same belt, but I feel like instituting that type of rule would be incredibly beneficial.

As for retiring the IC belt in 2002, I feel like it was the wrong time and context - the brand split was brand new, and there was the bad taste of the title only being retired for Trips' ego. I feel like fans would be much more welcoming of it now. Or, again, keep the name/belt, and just booked it differently.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't have the Network, but do they run the DVDs and docs on the Network?

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'd have to imagine that that was the plan, but Bryan's injury seems to have thrown a wrench in.

    ReplyDelete
  86. They run a lot of older documentary DVDs, but they come out on DVD quite a while before being launched on the Network.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Because if felt like what they were saying with that name was, "The only thing interesting as a character is that he's a black guy that's hard working." It's a stretch yes. But than again you heard "hard working" and thought "white guy".

It's like calling the Samoan guy that wears shoes, "Shoes Wearing

    ReplyDelete
  91. What DVDs have they made recently that are worth buying? The only ones I ever get are the WrestleManias just to own them all.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It seems obvious that's where they are going. Everyone loves a cash-in so they figure if Reigns gets it everyone will cheer him when he cashes it in. I get a feeling if that happens there's going to be a massive backlash. Forcing Regins into positions where we must like him is not the answer.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  97. Are you suggesting the Stephanie McMahon workout DVD is not worth buying?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Given the nonsense that clogged the blog the other day regarding Bryan, I won't speculate about his condition until we get some kind of official word. I will, however, say that doing Bryan vs. Cena without advertising it, and for free, would've been really fucking stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ahmed Johnson has 4 sets of pads on his legs alone and even JR is pointing out that he spends more time injured than in the ring.

No wonder he only lasted a couple more weeks after this point.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Ziggler's not a bad choice to take over that role, then... transition it from Bryan to Barrett (unfortunately might have to be a short match at EXTREME RULES) to Ziggler and then he starts doing the weekly challenge on SMACKDOWN. And start stressing that (in kayfabe terms) having the belt means you're making more money (a bonus or whatever). Hammer that over and over with the crowd until they start to "get it" that the belts are important. Yeah, I know, pipe dream, but if they're going to hammer things over and over, I wish they would be things that would actually make people care about the matches on a weekly basis.

If they are going to have the US Title defended that much on RAW, DBry should be doing the same thing on Smackdown with the IC title. Unfortunately DBry is not healthy enough to do that so until he is put it on someone like Reigns or Ziggler.

But I would keep the two belts exclusive to a particular show.

  144. I guess it doesn't occur to me that "hard working" is strictly a white thing and would be novel for a black wrestler. Not implying that you're racist, just that you're probably inferring something that isn't really there.

I'm upvoting you anyway, though, because that Samoan line was funny as shit. I never would've thought about that guy again, you must be from Pittsburgh. "Shoes Wearing" is the greatest nickname ever.

  147. My point is that claiming that the Tough Enough graduates improved after Taz left because of the Performance centre is blatantly false. As the wrestlers that came between his leaving & the Performance centre were better than those from his era.

  156. So if TE with Taz was worse than TE without Taz, why do you feel that having the performance centre will make Taz needed on the new TE? Will it negate Taz's suckage?

  179. More on TNA from Wrestling Observer

TNA’s top stars have contracts which state that they are paid a salary on the first of every month. The other talent work on per-show deals. Several of the biggest names were behind on pay, which is said to be growing into a major issue. Some of the wrestlers were over 30 days behind while others haven’t been paid for longer.

When Matt Hardy tweeted photos showing that he received five checks from TNA at once, it’s believed that it showed he was one of the performers who were owed quite a bit of money. Even if his intent may have been to show that TNA workers are being paid, it shows that he was behind on getting his money.

As previously reported, Taz announced that he left TNA and thanked them for his time there. He was reportedly “way behind” on pay and refused to fly to Nashville to do post-production commentary due to his issues with the company.

TNA recently moved the payroll office from Nashville to Panda Energy’s home city of Dallas. Some people have used this as an excuse for the payment situation. However, TNA has actually been sending checks out of Dallas for a while now.

Meanwhile, word is that “the honeymoon is pretty much over” in regards to TNA’s relationship with Destination America. Discovery signed TNA as “an experiment”, hoping to add to DA’s lineup. TNA is easily the highest-rated show for Destination America, but Discovery isn’t happy that TNA can’t generate ad revenue. They were also expecting a larger amount of TNA’s audience from Spike TV to follow it during the movie. Destination America is available in 61.7% of the homes that Spike TV is in, but the new episodes of Impact are only getting 30.2% of the audience that Impact had last year. Even with the replay, it’s still bringing in less than half the viewers it had on Spike TV at this time last year.

  183. I've just read the report itself. It refers to DVD sales for Jan/Feb being down 70% compared to Nov/Dec.
    1) Christmas may have an impact on the difference in sales between those two periods.
    2) The Steph workout DVD you are mocking is from December. So it was in the better selling period.

  187. I'm actually originally from New Jersey, but I went to the University of Utah, which is where Mr. Fuamatu-Maʻafala played college ball. He was a beast in college too. Thought he'd have a better pro. There actually is another reason why I used his name. Other than it being one of the greatest names ever. There is a somewhat famous story in U of Utah football lore that when Fuamatu-Maʻafala was a freshman he asked to play with no shoes or pads. The coaches of course told him no, you can't do that. But he would wear as minimal pads as possible.

Also, in my defense, I would not clarify myself as a racist, but than again I guess we all are a little bit. Especially the ones of us who project how not racist we are. But I also do not live in the world not realizing the stereotyping that others put on each other.

Some white people believing that black people are lazy or not "hard working" is nothing new. I still hear white people make those jokes today, On Tosh.0, Family Guy and I'm sure there's a ton more. There were specific jokes from those shows that popped right into my head.

But no where is that stereotype more prevalent than the south. These things go back the days of slavery. If it was a WWF character I might not have gotten the racist undertones as much. (Besides Vince has always been way more blatant with his racist characters) And who knows, maybe Mr. Walker came up with the character himself. But it being a southern based wrestling company. I definitely felt some racist undertones with that name.

  189. Something my co-worker and I were discussing recently: what current-generation stars could be dropped into any time period or promotion in the last, say, 30-40 years and still be stars? It's a trickier question than you'd think; not everyone could go to a different era and still be the star they were. For example, Hogan or even Austin might not quite work today the way they did in their time.

The two that I kept coming back to that I was absolutely sure about are Punk and Lesnar.

Punk would have obviously been an amazing foil for Austin and Rock in the Attitude Era, could have easily filled the Bret/Shawn role and possibly gotten more mainstream buzz out of it (a guy that looks like Punk at the height of the grunge era? Money) than they ever could. Could have easily filled the Savage role before that, face or heel, and the Piper role as a Hogan foil before that.
And Brock, I don't even feel really needs to be explained.

    ReplyDelete
  190. I wish they could leave us alone about the election. I wish our elections were every six years. Every four means CONSTANT media hype.

    ReplyDelete
  191. The Rock, Big Show, Piper & Cena could work in pretty much any period.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Actually a unification match would be a good way to take the title off Bryan of he's going to be out a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  193. Agreed, I was just focusing on current era guys but it's an interesting question to go the other way with it, too. It's trickier to say with guys from past eras because we see them come back and get the nostalgia pops, but more importantly we also see their influences in future generations. You can see plenty of Roddy in, say, Jericho or Punk's heel schticks.
