WWE Banning the Curb Stomp?

This is from Justin LaBar at Wrestlezone.com

"According to WWE sources, the company will be banning Seth Rollins from using the curb stomp finishing move.

WWE’s feeling about the move, which the WWE World Heavyweight Champion uses as his finisher, is that it’s too much of a direct liability and risk for a head injury. All of sports is trying to be more proactive when it comes to preventing head injuries and concussions, and this is the reason for WWE banning the curb stomp.

WWE reportedly doesn’t want its top star to be doing that move every night and they also don’t want to be showing it in past clips or videos anymore. This is why last week on RAW when Rollins came out, the video which played during his entrance was primarily just graphics of his name. The normal entrance video for Rollins features a compilation of clips, several of which are him performing the curb stomp."

So, what do you guys think?

  1. He came into the company when they were making these sort of measures.., SO WHY THE FUCK DID THEY LET HIM HAVE THIS FINISHER FOR THREE YEARS?!

    *Cornette Face*

    ReplyDelete
  2. The Curb Stomp, like The Punt, has to be an MDK finisher. Always teased, rarely unleashed, and nobody (not even Cena) kicks out of it.

Then, when Lesnar kicks out of it...it has value.

  3. The fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

  4. How the fuck do you not think about this until the guy is champ.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Good call, any decision with the worker's wellbeing in mind is a plus. There are hundreds of other moves he could use anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Seeing how the superkick also involves a headshot, can we expect that move to be banned next? The Brogue Kick?

If they want to make it an MDK finisher, that's one thing, but guys have been taking that finisher for three years and you haven't heard of anyone getting hurt. As long as Rollins isn't really driving his foot down, then the victim controls how hard his head comes crashing down.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That doesn't make any sense it is a face bump from a crouch, if you can't do that safely you shouldn't be in the WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's cool, that's a real low risk move.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It is funny because at Wrestlemania I figured that the Curb Stomp is one of the safest, but best finishers they have. Rollins pushes his foot and his opponent falls about 2 feet. Looks much worse than it is.

I can get banning some of the more risky moves (like the piledriver), but come on. This isn't ballet.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Man I was just gushing over the move in the aftermath of Mania. How it fits the bill of a great finisher- looks like it hurts, can be done in anybody regardless of size, and can be countered smoothly and realistically.

If he's hurting guys with it, fine, change it. But if it's just a perception thing is it any worse than the pedigree or dirty deeds (probably others)? I mean, they hit each other in the head and sell concussions all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree with the people saying make it a MDK finisher (on that note, when's the last time Orton has used the punt? Has it been banned?) Banning it altogether seems pretty extreme unless there's some info about people he's injured that we're not aware of.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The move sucks, he's far too talented to be doing that. Surprised it too this long

    ReplyDelete
  13. The punt is, indeed, banned. He teases it every once in a while for big matches, but hasn't hit it in probably 3 years.

  16. Maybe the reasoning is...it's not a very safe move for the kids trying to emulate it.

    DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm guessing the turnbuckle powerbomb will be banned too.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think Rollins is defined by that move but the rationale makes no sense. I mean, how many pro wrestling moves appear to give a guy a concussion? It's NOT REAL! They should ban all punches....all DDTs....all kicks to the head....all power bombs....every Brock suplex.

I mean, isn't Reigns big move a jumping punch to the fucking face??

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow, I don't usually encounter this level of knowledge on the blog. I suppose, after giving it more thought, that a face bump is pretty damn simple...though I can't do it safely. Which is cool because I most definitely don't belong in the WWE ( I'm as soft as rotten fruit) But you were also capable of calculating the probability of mistake by either of the two performers on any given night. This is some damn fine work man. Kudos.

  23. Very true my friend, this makes no sense at all unless like I mentioned below, he injured somebody with the move (or some dumbass kid backyard wrestling did it and hurt/killed somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Brogue Kick? You're cut.
    Bull Hammer? Cut.
Superkick? I like your style, which is why it was so hard to cut you.

I think that about does it... except for the WMD, Sister Abagail, and Dirty Deeds.

Running Knee... please don't worry... you're cut.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now.
    Forever.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's a good point. I feel that one should ban a move only after demonstrated injury, regardless of business.

    ReplyDelete
  27. NO. Wait for Sting's music. YOU IDIOT.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He's talented enough to get just about anything over. He'll be ok without it.

There is a dark hypocrisy to this, though. CTE is shown to be more associated with collisions, not concussions. The compiled, repeat damage of sub-concussive hits is showing to have more result of 'brown brain' than individual concussions cause.

So basically, wrestlers who still take bumps are compiling this damage, but WWE is more interested in the illusion of brain damage reflecting on the company.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What if you're a retard yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please. A Dennis Miller intro would run longer than the match.

  32. Virgil's Gimmick TableApril 20, 2015 at 2:08 PM

The move can be easily modified for extra safety. He can put his foot on their upper back between the shoulder blades. The Kevin Dunn Seizure Cam can actually be a benefit here by cutting to the right angle to hide the fakeness of the bump. Easy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Theberzerker, #1 HUSS CHOMPIONApril 20, 2015 at 2:08 PM

And you all thought I was nuts for wondering how he's gotten away with having that finish (called THAT name no less) for so long? HA! HUSS!
I knew this day would come eventually, but honestly, I agree that as long as it's not outright banned, but rather kept on retainer as an MDK finisher only busted out in dire times, a la The Punt (or the Tombstone...Taker didn't do it very often when he was full time, in the last decade anyway), then that's fine. But if this is just kiddie gloves being slowly put on everything, then they're actually gonna manage to make the future of wrestling become even WORSE than they already are.

    We don't like cool moves.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Literally no WWE finishing move is safe for kids to emulate.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah, the more I think about the more I feel is has to be that he hurt someone (or more).

The Big Show's knockout punch is the dominant finisher in wrestling today. The optics of the curb stomp can't be the reason.

    ReplyDelete
  37. On a related note, Cena throwing 680 pound steps into people's faces is still allowed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Virgil's Gimmick TableApril 20, 2015 at 2:10 PM

Which means if he ever does, it's gonna be like a western Burning Hammer.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm all for safety, but where do you draw the line? If it's move safety, I would think Brock dumping guys on their heads/necks is more dangerous. If it's emulation, literally every signature move in the company is dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's a flat bump on the chest, no?

Can't go doing Pheonix Splashes all the time so I guess next is finding a submission hold.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I read that as "Why don't we have balloons instead of titties"...which made "all the other wrestlers hug" a completely different result.

    UN-Ban the Piledriver.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Someone remind me again how the curb stomp is any more or less dangerous than an impaler DDT, a movie Cena just took on a recent RAW? Or a tombstone piledriver, that movie Bray Wyatt got nailed with at WM? Or pretty much ANY Brock Lesnar offense??

    ReplyDelete
  56. A lot more wrestlers need MDK finishers. I love the idea of a category of moves that are universally seen as deadly.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I legit almost pissed myself listening to Bret tell that story.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I hear it's still real to some, dammit.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Speaking of possible concussion-inducing finishers, does anyone remember that sweet Koko B. Ware suplex/piledriver thing from the 80s? What was it called? Pretty sure that was banned too. At least with the Curb Stomp there a plausible chance for injury, unlike the Cesaro swing which was banned for a time out of sheer spite.

  68. Ah I was always a WWE fanboy so I don't think I ever saw a full episode of Nitro. 73. Seth Rollins with the School Boy

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think Benoit between his 2002 return and Rumble '04 really did so much to get over that there was just no denying him the kind of moment he got at WM20. It was his year; I don't know what Owen's would have been.

I see Owen being someone they could have went to when the amount of rehashing got ridiculous when they were still doing Austin vs. Undertaker and Kane vs. HHH matches in 2002 since either he hadn't wrestled a lot of the Austin/HHH types since they were in the midcard or hadn't wrestled others like The Rock really at all, thus making a lot of fresh matchups.

I think Owen would have probably hung on until about 2004 or 2005 as a top tier upper midcarder that could be used in main event feuds. I don't believe for a second that he was going to quit wrestling and be a firefighter or any such stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Seth is good enough to find a new finisher. Was he using a different finisher in RoH and the indy days?

    ReplyDelete
  76. The Distraction Roll-Up seems like a pretty safe finisher.

    ReplyDelete
  77. In fairness to Owen I don't think he'd have attempted a move on someone else he wouldn't take himself. He took a screwdriver from Scott Steiner in the Harts vs. Steiners match.

    ReplyDelete

If he's paired with them. And he doesn't retire. Both are unlikely.

Owen wasn't a guy in love with the business. He's not sticking around until he's 45.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'd give Rollins a Sharpshooter or the Texas Cloverleaf as a submission, and maybe something like the Edge-o-matic that he can do as an impact finisher. Whatever his pinfall finisher is, he needs to be able to do it to anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How is that any consolation to Steve Austin? Or someone like Droz?

    ReplyDelete
  83. The Bryan/concussion denial story makes this more interesting. It's funny how Bryan works a TV match in a major overseas markett, is heavily protected, and then suddenly flies home after working Smackdown, then the company says, "Oh no, he wasn't concussed at all!" I mean, yeah, if he *was* concussed and WWE put him in a match, no matter how protected he was, that looks extremely bad.

I'm not saying for sure that a curb-stomp ban is tied in, but I really feel that there's a connection.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would argue that they should ban 20 minute endless promos at the beginning of RAW since I think that causes far more head damage then a curb stomp does.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Well, really anyone without self destructive tendencies.

    ReplyDelete
  86. "The WWE is coming to your town and you can get tickets to WWE LIVE!!! Come watch your favorite stars like John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns as they take it easy and not get too excited out there. That's it. Everyone will just sit back and not do much for your entertainment."

  87. Three...count 'em...three hot takes!

    1) KEEPING KAYFABE LIKE A MARK!: Wait! Why would The Authority take away Seth Rollins' best move just before a match against Randy Orton where the stipulation is that Randy Orton can't use his best move?

    2) KIND OF SMARKY!: Rollins is a heel. His character shouldn't care what he's supposed to do--he does what he wants. He should keep doing the Curb Stomp and see who tries to stop him.

    3) FULL ON RUSSO: This is just a story that's getting planted in the dirt sheets so that when Rollins does the Curb Stomp in future shows they'll think that he's in trouble backstage and that way they can use Rollins in a Punk/Austin worked shoot sort of way.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Worst_in_the_WorldApril 20, 2015 at 2:33 PM

Can't wait to see Seth Rollins' shiity new "neckbreaker variation" finisher.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Perhaps they meant "repeated head butts" and not "curb stomp."

    Crazy European mis-translation!

    ReplyDelete
  90. They should just change the move where instead of the dude's head, he curb stomps their foot. It might not be that effective but it would make me laugh every time.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm sure either Droz or Austin would not like to trade "victim of in ring accident" places with Owen.

Wasn't Droz's due to a combination of some asshole threw a drink in the ring/D'Lo couldn't grip his shorts?

    ReplyDelete
  92. They're saving that for when Kurt Angle comes back for one last WWE run.

"Our doctors, Kurt, say you can't take ANY bumps...but, they say you CAN put your foot on someone's ankle... We'll call it the Angle Stomp."

    ReplyDelete
  93. I was a WWE fanboy too, but also a Wrestlingfanboy, so I watched everything which came on tv. ;) In germany, we had wo wait weeks for the current RAW but we could watch the complete nitro "only" 4 days later. And even today we have to wait 3 days to see a 2 hour version of a 3 hour RAW...(since WWE doesn't come on sky anymore)...

True. I dunno, the DDT has been defined as a transitional move for so long now, I don't think it can be presented as a finisher without some dressing up.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I never thought the movie even looked as devastating as it conceptually might, like it's consistently been done with safety in mind. I get wanting to make it a special spot, but it's definitely a move he should be allowed to use in big matches. I know what it is, but can he pull it off on the Big SHow, Kane or someone of that size?

    He's pretty strong.

Person who needs a new finisher ASAP?

    Roman- new move, Triple Powerbomb.

    ReplyDelete
  139. If true....if true....it sounds like a move to keep kids from emulating it. In the professional wrestling world it's executed very well and appears to be highly safe. If two kids try to do it in the backyard a broken nose would be the best case scenario. And the last thing they want to hear is some kid in surbubia broke his neck because his buddy tried to do a curb stomp while they were wrestling in the backyard.

So making it like the punt might be a good thing if that is their thinking.

  140. business suit Morton mullet is hard to beat... easy top ten worst heel turns... Morton suffered from Honky Tonk Man disease, where he gets so crazy over it breaks his brain and he never evolves further

    ReplyDelete
  141. I think Austin's issue stems from Owen never checking on him or apologizing to him.

    ReplyDelete
  142. the cheating old men that still come out to an 80s theme song looking for high fives... weren't they heels for a couple weeks during the Feb 98 NWA invasion angle Russo did to fuck with Cornette?

    ReplyDelete
  143. I think they only keep The Punt a "possibility" to troll the fans at this point. They've teased it so many times and it always fails to manifest itself.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Personally I didn't think it was a great finisher, and I'm a big fan of Rollins. The move looked awesome in their debut six-man because it looked like he kind of improvised it and it came out of nowhere and looked spectacular. As a regular finisher it becomes one of those contrived deals where a guy has to find himself in a not-THAT-common position every time against Rollins (e.g. 619). I'm looking forward to seeing what his new finish is.

    ReplyDelete
  145. It wasn't half as brutal as Super Dragon's curbstomp anyway

    ReplyDelete
  146. I love the curb stomp. As a finisher, it's one of the safest moves out there. A bit contrived, yes, but it's also simple to execute and looks very effective when sold properly. Better for Seth to use that rather than try to bust out a Phoenix Splash every week.

  147. ThebrazilianpsychoApril 20, 2015 at 3:12 PM

    Dragon actually injured people.

    ReplyDelete
  148. All finisher from here on out should be springboard stunners.

    ReplyDelete
  149. If he could do that to Big Show he'd get over for life.

    ReplyDelete
  150. He could bust out the Phoenix Splash for the special occasions like Post-Invasion Booker T would use the Houston Hangover.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Right? That sloppy trash seems more dangerous than "you push up while I lightly put my foot on you."

    ReplyDelete
  152. He could always have a go at that finisher that Prince Ikea did, that jump off the turnbuckle DDT thing that looked like shit 99% of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  153. ThebrazilianpsychoApril 20, 2015 at 3:17 PM

That's only something I see Cesaro, Brock and Cena doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Backyard Wrestling is deader than Davey Boy Smith.

    ReplyDelete
  155. If you ban curbstomps, only criminals will have them.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Really cool move, this sucks for Rollins.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Roman Reigns, zhu are zo uglay! Zhu will ave a tagteem match with that chevre Daniel Bry-ahn against Zhey and Zhey Zegurity! Now ZAT is "model leadership!"

    ReplyDelete
  158. Well, that would be a move worth banning then wouldn't it!~

Honestly it doesn't shock me. The only reason anyone knows Superdragon is because his moveset makes the most indyriffic wrestlers go "dude...that's fucking dangerous."

The only reason I connect the two is because I'd been reading for months Rollins had adopted the curbstomp before I saw him use it, so I was picturing the Dragon version of the move. then I saw it and was like "oh, well that looks way less like it could kill someone."

    BARRY WHITE DRIVER.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I sometimes watch suicidal dragon's compilation of Super Dragon moves.

A guy using ONE of those moves is always cool. It's just one guy hitting you with them that transcends to "lol someone gonna die" territory.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Vince: "Well, Seth, your Curb Stomp's gone for safety reasons."
Seth: "That sucks, it looked great, but I never hurt anyone with it."
Vince: Yeah, well anyway...good news is, I picked your new finisher. Remember MVP's Playmaker? It looks like shit, but wouldn't hurt a fly. Enjoy it, pal!"
    Seth (under his breath): "Fuck."

  164. The Power Bomb should be his move.

    ReplyDelete
  165. But they have a "don't try this at home" disclaimer! I mean, seriously, if kids don't pay attention to that, they're lost causes anyway

    ReplyDelete
  166. This wouldn't have worked. I can just imagine him in his CAUTION tights raising both arms and comically yelling "I AM THE GAME".

    ReplyDelete
  167. Somebody tweet Meltzer and tell him to take his flip phone off vibrate. There's NEWZ

    ReplyDelete
  168. Meh. If they were so serious about the safety of the move, then they should have never allowed him to use it to begin with.

That being said, I'm thankful they waited until after that awesome RKO at Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I loved when random JCP guys would pop up on Nitro for a match.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I doubt they will ever do it again but the tease alone gets a rise from fans right?

    ReplyDelete
  171. Like Vince would remember MVP.

    ReplyDelete
  172. More Phoenix Splashes. That's safer for everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  173. This is a real 180 for a company that had him nearly kill Dean Ambrose with a Curb Stomp on cinder blocks.

    ReplyDelete
  174. This just in...NJPW has banned everything it does for being unsafe.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Some idiot kid must have tried it on his little brother.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I only know him from the Botchamania chant.

    ReplyDelete
  177. "Hey Vince, what about the mainstream-style comedy I want to do for the Network, Curb Stomp Your Enthusiasm?"

"WAIT, NON-WRESTLING TV?!! BRING BACK THE MANEUVER, PAL!"

    ReplyDelete
  178. He should have if he didn't!

    ReplyDelete
  179. That makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  180. In retrospect I wonder how Austin feels now.

There has to be money in top star vs Gu who broke top stars neck.

    ReplyDelete
  181. What about the fucking ladder matches that have the guys getting powerbombed through a ladder that's ok?

    ReplyDelete
  182. Or give guys more than a night's sleep to recover from physically taxing matches, or not create a culture where they are scared to take time off for injuries and operations.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Everything is OK if it doesn't get you over. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  188. This reminds me of when people were saying Brodus Clay came up with Mark Henry's Hall of Pain gimmick for himself and Henry took it. The "gimmick" was just a push, actually getting to dominate opponents. Maybe Clay came up with that phrase, but I don't think he narrowly missed getting a clean win over Orton because Henry snatched his idea.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Damn, I was actually hoping they could find a way to pull of the curb stomp from the top of the cage at extreme rules.

    ReplyDelete
  190. Again, though, the AA, the DDT (especially Dolph's version), the Brogue Kick, and the Chokeslam/Tombstone are just as, if not more deadly if done in real life.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Will it still be a move that he is at least allowed to pretend to set up, like the punt kick?

    ReplyDelete
  192. All head shot moves banned. Except the pedigree. That's grandfathered in

    ReplyDelete
  193. I actually disagree. Finishing moves are the one aspect Roman needs no improvement in -- his spear is badass, his Superman punch is great, and he's got that deadlift powerbomb deal.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Let's stop using actual wresters! CG and a holographic ring will fix everything!
