So, let's play a little true or false. These guys have won their last WWE World Title:
True. I think everyone knows and acknowledges that the experiment was a failure as far as having a part-time champion goes.
Daniel Bryan
False. Something will happen and they'll need a transitional guy and that's Bryan.
Dolph Ziggler
Well he's never won it in the first place, and I think he'll get it someday. False.
HHH
If he was gonna, the Bryan storyline would have been the time. So true.
John Cena
Are you kidding me?
Randy Orton
See John Cena. They'll be trading the belt when the world is reduced to post-apocalyptic rubble and Paul Heyman is managing the cockroaches.
I get why folks are angry about this and I think it was a stupid booking decision. But WWE legitimately views any Triple H match at Mania as a semi-main event (regardless of its place on the card), and Trips cheated outrageously to win his match against Sting. So let's not pretend that Sting was buried at Mania. He had an entertaining match and he will likely be back again.
ReplyDeleteI think that Cena winning the title will only be in an emergency. I think they've painted themselves into a corner with giving him 15 World title reigns and they don't want him to tie that yet. The US title gives him a belt to defend in the main event.
ReplyDeleteIf/when Cena does win it I think it will be at one of the big four PPVs to make the biggest deal possible about it.
I think Brock will get another reign. He's got a new 3 year contract and they won't be able to resist. Cena, Orton, and Bryan all get at least 1 more title reign each. I don't think Ziggler will ever touch the belt at this point, and Triple H is thankfully done with championships.
ReplyDeleteEverything about this was great. All hail Triple H!
ReplyDelete"True. I think everyone knows and acknowledges that the experiment was a failure as far as having a part-time champion goes. "
ReplyDeleteHuh, I musta missed that announcement
Agreed. The booking of Mania and Raw absolutely point towards brock murderizing Rollins and winning the title at some point before Mania.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think there's a good chance their plan now would be to do the same exact main event next year, with Roman going over Brock. At least now there's something behind the match.
I don't think Brock would come back if he wasn't going to get at least one more.
ReplyDeleteCan see one more for Brock, not this part time crap, rumble to mania with 75% of raws in that time
ReplyDeleteYup. I could kinda see Brock killing someone backstage and inserting himself into MITB, winning the briefcase, terrorizing Rollins all year, and then finally winning the title at the Rumble.
ReplyDeleteI read where DBry said he wouldn't mind defending the IC belt against Lesnar. Now I don't think Brock WOULD go for that belt, but a Lesnar/DBry match would be nice to see.
ReplyDeleteBrock should do what Vader did in WCW. Win everything (MitB, Royal Rumble) to MAKE himself #1 contender so Rollins can't run.
ReplyDeleteLet's say Brock wins the title from Rollins at Summerslam. Would the BOD be happy with brock title defesnses at NOC (Rollins), Survivor Series (Sheamus), and Rumble (Rusev) before losing the title at Mania? (Probably Roman, maybe Ambrose if he catches fire again.)
ReplyDeleteThis just proves how smart Sting was to stay away for 15 years.
ReplyDeleteIf they had just added one more Brock title defense at Survivor Series last year I really would have seen nothing wrong with the amount of defenses. Every other month would have been fine, it was just that Sept-Jan run that was the killer. For example, Brock beating Orton at SS in St Louis would have made the most sense, and then Rollins could have curb stomped Orton to death the next night in frustration.
ReplyDeleteI think Brock should at Least defend at every PPV.
ReplyDeleteBest case sure, but I think every other is fine too. He defends in Sept, then Oct is a #1 contenders match. Defends in Nov, then Dec is a #1 contenders TLC match for the Rumble.
ReplyDeleteI dont know what to make of this whole Sting thing.... I dont think he was "upset" about losing. HHH hasnt won a match in about two years, so they painted themselves into a corner a little bit. My bigger problem was with Vince's comments about Sting and how they handled his post Raw speech. The match itself was a perfectly acceptable all be it simple match before all the hijinx (which was fun). The NWO being the ones to help save Sting, made literally no sense but I get what they were going for with THE MONDAY NIGHT WARS HAS COME TO LIFE stuff. I wish Sting won but HHH does need to win occasionally to keep some measure of aura. I think Sting should have faced Rollins or something like that. Yes a Sting win over Rollins would of upset some, but the way the night ended would of put an end to that. Rollins could have bumped all over for Sting and made him look more impossing. Maybe Randy and HHH could of had a match with all the bells and whistles to make it come off special.
ReplyDelete-Man, I'm really not sure on Brock.
ReplyDelete-With Bryan I think it's possible we could have seen his last if the younger guys really take off. But I'd lean toward yes for the same reason Scott said: I don't think Bryan will be The Guy again, but they could use him as a transitional champ to make a new top guy. The fact that I can see him as either a heel or babyface champion makes me lean toward yes.
-I'm not as optimistic as Scott is about Dolph. He turns 35 this year and isn't anywhere near it now, and has not only more established people ahead of him on the pecking order but also more talented younger guys coming up.
-Agreed on HHH. If something similar to Bryan's WM30 storyline comes along...maybe HHH would take the title to put that guy over? Hard to imagine another one for him, though.
-I think the smart money is yes on Cena/Orton, too, but I honestly would not be surprised if we never saw either of them have the title again. Everyone wins their last one sometime.
The weird thing is Sting made a clear point on RAW pre-WM that this wasn't about WCW or the Monday Night Wars (I think his exact words were "that would be ridiculous at this point"). Then 5 minutes later Steph and HHH come out and make it about WCW and the Monday Night Wars.
ReplyDeleteJust the usual wishy washy storytelling I guess, but I enjoyed the surrealness of it all so whatever
Ha, I'm sure he wouldn't mind it. I'm sure that Blake and Murphy wouldn't mind defending the NXT tag team titles against him, but that ain't happening either.
ReplyDeleteyeah that part aggitated me. Sting wanted to put an end to the Authority not force WCW to re-open its doors.
ReplyDeleteBrock: "Vince, would it would make you happy if I defended the title more often?"
ReplyDeleteVince: "Yes. Yes it would."
Brock: "So let's say I defend the title on every RAW. That's one title defense a week and there are 52 weeks in a year, correct?"
Vince: "Correct."
Brock: "So that's 52 defenses, right?"
Vince: "Yes, Where are you going with this?"
Brock: "Well looking at your roster sheet, there are 52 male superstars in the WWE."
Vince: "So you're gonna defend against one superstar a week? I like that!"
Brock: "No. I'm gonna do it all in one shot."
Vince: "Wait, what?!?!"
*Brock walks into male locker room and locks the door behind him. Loud screams are heard.*
*5 minutes later Brock comes out covered in blood*
Brock: "I think you're conna have to call up those guys from NXT."
I'm thinking of the match itself. Not that it's a title shot.
ReplyDeleteThe weirdest thing to me is that Sting looked in good shape physically and moved well enough. I don't know why they booked him like he was as limited as Bret at WM26.
ReplyDeleteSting turned out to be fodder to set up HHH/Rock.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a better chance that Cena and Orton both have a turn with the title before 2015 is over ahead of neither of them holding ever again.
ReplyDeleteYou lost me at BoD happy.
ReplyDeleteSting got his Wrestlemania moment which was to be crucified at the altar of HHH's ego.
ReplyDeleteThey followed a similar formula to every Sting/Ric Flair match that's been done over the last 5000 years.
ReplyDelete"It happens." ----Booker T.
ReplyDeleteYou're insane if you think Cena isn't winning another one
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason (not the main reason, but *a* reason) we didn't see that match at WM31 really was legitimate concern for Bryan's health in a match with Brock. As awesome as Lesnar is, his best matches basically require his opponent to take a legitimately dangerous beating.
ReplyDeleteHow's about "slightly less bitchy"?
ReplyDeleteSting shouldn't feel too bad. Foley, Rock (2000), Jericho, Lesnar, even Taker to some extent at Mania 27, and enough others have also been made to look like bad at Mania for HHH's ego.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, Sting's been booked far worse in WCW, so eh.
Sting came off looking way better in defeat here than he did in "victory" over Hogan at Starrcade '97
ReplyDeletewasnt quite that bad... but i agree he looked and moved well. I am glad it was overbooked. Made it a spectacle.
ReplyDeleteWhat has Sting done in WCW that was worse than what happened on mania and RAW?
ReplyDeleteAnother thought, if HHH's ego is gonna need more stroking at Mania, I'd much rather it be via beating Sting whose image isn't going to suffer at all from one loss, rather than someone younger (whether a Wyatt, Ambrose, or Ziggler)
ReplyDeleteDid you miss the part where I said "the smart money is yes on Cena/Orton"?
ReplyDeleteStarrcade 97.
ReplyDeleteJoining the nWo Wolfpac after the whole "lone wolf against the nWo" thing
Heel Sting in 99.
The whole Millionaire's Club/Vampiro stuff in 2000.
He didn't look that bad on RAW, I thought - HHH showed plenty of ass on TV, and Sting kept getting the upper hand until the PPV.
He should honor the 30 day rule. I understand wrestling is fake but he should at least be able to squash one person a month.
ReplyDeleteehhh, I think this is all a bit overblown. Yeah he lost and the storyline was bleh but whatever. Sting got his Wrestlemania match, he looked good, the match was fun, overbooking was enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteSure maybe this got to be a bit ridiculous with the WCW stuff, but they didn't treat him like a chump or anything.
Hated it. The nWo fighting for Sting is too stupid for even WWE's respect for continuity.
ReplyDeleteNo one worse than booker t.
ReplyDeleteyeah. that was the worst of all. Can't believe I left that one out.
ReplyDeleteYou mean other than the Black Scorpion mess, the Jake Roberts match, the Beach Blast min-movie, the Vampiro feud, Vader's Castle of Fear, and being saved from the Four Horsemen by Robocop?
ReplyDeleteAnd as much fun as the "heel best friend" storyline with Luger was, Sting kinda looked like a dummy during it.
ReplyDeleteBrock is so going to get another title. Let Rollins cheat his way to title defense after title defense until Brock Lesnar comes back to murder him and take the title. $$$$
ReplyDeleteSting looked great for a 56 year old that hasn't wrestled in a while and it wasn't like he was squashed or even lost clean so its no big deal. The match was just meant to be fun 90s nostalgia. Even in his prime Sting would do jobs like that in WCW and it never hurt him.
ReplyDeleteSting is almost 60 years old. At this point if someone wants to bring him in and pay him millions of dollars for 15 minutes worth of work for the sole purpose of satisfiying their own ego so that they can look in the mirror and say "Yes, I AM every bit as good as Austin, Hogan or the Rock and dammit people LOVE me", I'm sure Sting is perfectly fine with that.
ReplyDeleteSting always struck me as a guy happy with his life and content with how his career went. I agree that he probably doesn't really care one way or the other if he won or loss.
ReplyDeleteDolph was World champ before the titles were unified, he counts as part of the lineage.
ReplyDeleteStill think the way to go was....
ReplyDeleteSting vs Rollins
* Sting costs the Authority a big match at Survivor Series. Rollins now doesnt have the Authority to protect him and he continually verbally attacks Sting for being jealous that he Rollins is the future and Sting is a relic from the past. Rollins gets the authority back the same way and they get the match vs Sting.
Orton vs HHH
* Orton pissed at Rollins being the golden boy. Have all of HHH's guys interfere and all that to help him when. Play up the history between them.
The angles were stupid but did he look as bad at the end of THOSE angles than he did at the end of RAW? I don't believe so.
ReplyDeleteHe may not have won every battle but he was never emasculated at the end of it.
At this point, HHH feels like Verne Gagne with more hair. I am counting the days until we get to see Trips son and he tag against Shiek Adnon and Crusher Blackwell.
ReplyDeleteBryan is like the new Rey Mysterio ... Rey got his big planned win and then a few years later got another title run when he was needed. He stayed over, doesn't mind working with midcard titles, has great matches. Bryan will get another title run if his neck can handle it.
ReplyDeleteAustin had Wake Keller on his podcast yesterday. Their take on this is interesting, and certainly has some merit to it.
ReplyDeleteThere was probably a shared belief that a 55 year-old man and a part-time wrestler/full-time executive could not take the match to that next gear in the second half of the match. Therefore, the overbooked shenanigans were placed there to get a pop from the crowd and hide both guys' weaknesses. I think that's slightly discrediting both guys, but I get where they're coming from.
Their belief as to HHH going over is that HHH is more likely to have a high-profile WM32 match, especially if the Rock and Rousey stuff ever goes further, than Sting is, so that this keeps the part-timer strong.
Someone said on here a few weeks back that HHH should never win again. I disagree with that, as his getting an occasional win takes the "foregone conclusion" out of every HHH match. Do I think he should have gone over Sting? Probably not. Do I think it's a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, especially if he's going to be eating Rousey hip-tosses for lunch next year? Nope.
Last paragraph is spot on. Same applies to Big Show winning the battle royale - it's for the greater long-term good
ReplyDeleteStarrcade 97 "fast count that wasn't a fast count," followed up by a "huh?" Bret Hart thing.
ReplyDeleteIt makes more sense to have HHH go over to set up Rock/HHH but the handshake of respect thing was goofy especially if he's remaining a heel.
ReplyDeleteAre title wins written into contracts for big stars? If so, I can't imagine Brock re-signing without that in his contract. He seems to get everything else.
ReplyDeleteBrock: False. Bitch didn't sign back up to play second fiddle and will be monster over upon his return. He gets the belt back by Summerslam. Clearly, playing the part-time champ didn't kill how folks perceive him.
ReplyDeleteBryan: True. I don't think they trust his health enough. He may get a brief transition run, but I think that time has passed.
Ziggler: False. I think he gets a brief run again. Sure.
HHH: True. The head is big. It ain't that big.
Cena: Good one. Next?
Orton: I'll say false. Orton settles into mid-late Jericho territory as someone who can be anywhere in the mid/high end of the card, and step in at the top when briefly needed.
Something makes me think we'll see Bryan/Balor for the IC title at Summerslam. And if so, FUCK your big & tall world title Vinny, that match is a fucking PPV unto itself!

Giving guys main events with no champ makes them feel like bigger deals, too, regardless of wins and losses.
ReplyDeleteAmbrose is still over with a pitiful win-loss record because they were main event losses. If those happen in the midcard the effect is amplified.
It also involved him winning the next one or two battle royals, which I'm not sure I could stomach.
ReplyDelete
