Daniel Bryan Update

The following was reported by PWInsider:

"WWE officials were hoping to get Daniel Bryan back in the ring this month and have him defend the Intercontinental Title against King Barrett this Sunday at the Payback pay-per-view but as noted, they got MRI results back on May 8th and it was determined that Bryan would not be able to return any time soon, if ever again.

The situation has brought a lot of frustration within WWE. WWE officials want what's best for Bryan but they obviously want him working for the company and want him on TV as they have a DVD and other products coming out that need to be promoted. There has been some talk that Bryan is now so injury-prone that maybe they could best use him in a non-wrestling position.

Since Monday's RAW where he dropped the Intercontinental Title, the talk has been that Bryan is trying to figure out a way to get cleared. There's been no word yet if Bryan will be getting the surgery that he was so reluctant to get before but people are wondering if that's an option. Needless to say, a lot of people in the company really feel bad for Bryan right now."

  1. So Bryan will either get better and return, or he won't and he'll retire. That sounds like Meltzer.

Though is Bryan really "injury prone" or has he just not properly healed from his original injuries from a year ago?

He would be the perfect head trainer in NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Man, not since HBK have I see someone going to such lengths repeatedly to avoid having to lose a title in the ring!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Missy Hyatt would do better as NXT head trainer. Allegedly.

    ReplyDelete
  5. If he's healthy enough to talk to the ring he's healthy enough to take a Bull Hammer!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Has Bryan ever trained anyone before?

Being skilled at something and being skilled at teaching that thing are completely different concepts.

Also, I doubt he wants to move to Florida.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Or have a four-way match in which he mostly just lies at ringside to give him an 'out'.

Or anything really other than what they did.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't think Brian wants to move all the way across the company and again he's never trained anyone before just because he's skilled at something doesn't mean he's good at it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Brie is the equivalent of the scissors used to cut Samsons hair. This is completely her fault

    She never told anyone

    ReplyDelete
  10. Put him in a Commissioner Foley type role.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Was ROH head trainer before Delirious.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm just glad that this happened while he was working for the E and not one of the shitty indies. At least he made some good money and should have access to better doctors. Imagine if this had happened after he got fired for the nexus deal?

    ReplyDelete
  13. If going home to Bedroom Brie Mode every night is the reward, shave my head right now. I'd eat honey out of that lion skull any day.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Losing Your Smile 101 is the first class they taught at HBK's wrestling school. Bryan learned from the best.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can only hope Bryan doesn't have a severe injury and instead just needs to get clean of all drugs and sort his life out whilst using a career ending injury as an excuse, like HBK.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Stop being a mark for the business. If your body is telling you no, then probably risking it all for a 'pro wrestling' company that is so far removed from what you loved about the business to begin with, is pretty dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He'd be slumming it out in TNA or RoH

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's hard to imagine Bryan getting over as anything other than an in-ring performer. Austin, JBL, Foley and Regal were all far better on the mike.

    ReplyDelete
  19. With no means of support.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't know man, he was pretty annoying as RAW General Manager that time

    ReplyDelete
  21. Holy cow, upvote for the lion skull reference. That is super impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Judging from his "natural therapy" discussion I read from the Total Divas recaps, I'm gonna guess the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with you. He'd have to push himself in either those organizations or on the Indies. He'd be destroying himself even further.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's interesting to look back and remember the absolute furor that was going on because Brock and Bryan were the "obvious story" from WM and why couldn't they just see that, etc. etc. With his physical condition it's likely they at least were trying to guard from that happening again. Can you imagine what a disaster it would've been to have him win the belt and vacate it *again* two weeks later?

    ReplyDelete
  25. ... and probably still legitimately headbutting people repeatedly.

    ReplyDelete

Might just be the first injury from two years ago hit the point of no return.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope he does the right thing for his health, whatever that is. I'd love to see him as a trainer at NXT or a commentator.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You could still have Rollins cash in MITB for a quick ambush or something.

    ReplyDelete
  30. There's nothing alleged about that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. We'll always have WM30...

    ReplyDelete
  32. It doesn't take away from the fact that the match would have been f'ing AWESOME.

    ReplyDelete
  33. All kidding aside, Missy is a great twitter follow. She has really good comments about what works and what doesn't in wrestling, and she's obviously still a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, a match with Lesnar would have been far more hazardous to his health than a seven-man match in which he was able to avoid taking any really serious bumps.

I'll admit I was one of those people who thought it was insane that, if Bryan was healthy enough to be cleared, he should've been used in the obvious main event. But if that was their reasoning for keeping him out of it....welp, they got that one right.

    ReplyDelete
  35. btw this is why the performance center is so great. I know there are things you learn on the indies that can't be replicated but Bryan had a good ten years of unregulated wear and tear on his body before even getting to the WWE. I feel like time has just run out for him and he has squeezed everything he possibly could. Perhaps he comes back, but the stuff he's suffering from sounds more chronic than curable.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Maybe you wouldn't have to feel so bad for him if you'd let him run with the ball when it was his time (Summerslam 2013) instead of screwing him over to the point where open fan revolt was needed to force him into the spot he deserved to have.

And if his days as a wrestler are over, there's only one proper on-camera role for him, and that's WWE Commissioner, putting the screws to the Authority.

    ReplyDelete
  37. the Brock/Bryan match should have happened at the Rumble. It would have given smark fans what they wanted and kept his away from Roman Reigns and avoided that dicotamy. Reigns and Cena should have been the final two, guess who Philly would have cheered for?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Exactly. If this injury problem was coming, and it obviously was, better now than earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think this situation really calls into question the new E policy of signing indy veterans. You only get a certain amount of bumps in your career. What is the sense in developing somebody that has already burned through most of them in high school gyms in front of 25 people? I would seriously question signing anybody past the age of 30.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The problem is we get a boring WWE style where nothing happens until 15 minutes in when guys exchange finishers and kick out and such.

    ReplyDelete
  41. There are benefits and drawbacks to be sure, but this is one of the BIG benefits. Regal has talked about that pretty extensively - they can teach guys in months what could take years to learn on the indies.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Not only did he train tons of people, he trained Sara Del Ray, who is now training the women in NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Those matches in RoH just before his first WWE run were fucking brutal. Sure, they get you over and pop the crowd but they also take years off of your career

    ReplyDelete
  44. There is so much going on here that bothers me I don't even know where to start.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Might as well get Adam Cole and ACH will they are young

    ReplyDelete
  46. Regarding the report or the comments

    ReplyDelete
  47. "guess who Philly would have cheered for?"

    J-B-L? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, its shitty news. The fact the whole company feels terrible for him is all you need to know.

    ReplyDelete
  49. As much as I like Bryan and enjoy watching him wrestle, I hope he just retires. He's really pushing himself past the safe point and will probably just end up doing more damage. Make him a NXT trainer and then have him manage a young wrestler. Then he can focus on knocking Brie up. Maybe if he is healthy enough, he can do one matcha year at Mania as a special attraction like Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  50. YOU DON 'T LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE, PAL! YOU LIKE WHAT I TELL YOU YOU LIKE!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Granted ... but the cream always rises to the top. The key for me is to find the balance between getting an indie guy at the right time in his career versus someone like Bryan (or Zayn or Owens even) who have put on so many miles already. Uhaa Nation could be a perfect example if he works out ... he's still only 27 and didn't start until like 2009? I think getting indie experience is crucial because you learn in front of a crown instead of just Dusty Rhodes, William Regal, and A-Train but if your ten years into the indies I don't blame the WWE for staying away.

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Trying to find a way to get cleared" is just a horrible sounding thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I said in the daily thread that he's still pretty young (33). He could easily take three years off, heal up, and see how he feels. We never thought we'd see Shawn back, but miraculously, not throwing himself at the ground 100 times per week did wonders for him.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Some people kill themselves doing what they love. He is one of those guys by the looks of things.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bryan is not special occasion material there I said it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The flip side of that is that wrestlers get to peak money-making form in their 30s.

    ReplyDelete
  57. But is he sponge-worthy?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'd love to have him at my birthday party.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah I agree not only do you get a certain amount of bumps but they are literally destroying themselves in front of a 100 people they take more bumps and they take harder bumps than guys in the big time.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bryan never should've come back in January. I felt at the time it may have been too soon and in retrospect it was right. Not saying he wouldn't have injured himself again but if Reigns was your guy going forward Bryan shouldn't have come back to take away that spotlight anyways.

They really should've just ran with him in 2013 and it's a shame it took so long to give him his run.

    ReplyDelete
  61. But I don't WANT to wear cartoonish lapels and "I work at a casino" shiny shirts!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I suppose you'd have to ask Brie

    ReplyDelete
  63. She also trained by Donovan Morgan, the APW boot camp and Japan so its not like he soley trained. Also training someone in APW is a lot different than training guys the WWE wants them trained.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Pretty sure he trained Sara Amato (Del Ray), who's not training people at NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What's left if they don't sign indy guys? 100% of the roster home grown in NXT? What a sad future that would be.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've mentioned this before, but Bryan's last appearance on Talk is Jericho, where he described in detail the entire recovery, was very concerning. He basically didn't get the surgery they thought he needed because, after two trips to a "natural remedies" doctor, he felt better.

It just didn't sound like he paid enough attention to what the doctors were saying. This is all easy to say in hindsight, of course, but I agree it felt early for him to come back, especially based on what we know now after that interview about the severity of the injury.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Problem is, if that was their reasoning for keeping him out of the main event, he shouldn't have been wrestling at all.

Much less winning the IC title.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love Bryan. One of my favorite wrestlers ever. But this would be a really bad move, IMO, because he's ... average on the mic. He can rise to the occasion when need be, but on a consistent basis? I don't see it.

Foley's one of the all-time best on the stick, so he was able to transition naturally.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That type of shit turned Kurt into a pill-head. There will always be some Doctor Nick who will find a way to interpret results to suit whoever is paying them, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's kinda pitch counts in baseball. If you've pitched in college it's another 3 years of unmonitored pitches where as in high school pitchers you don't have so many used pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Has Albert trained anybody before being named NXT head trainer? I legit don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  72. If you signs guys younger Indy guys you're saving on bumps that can be done under WWE control.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Go find the TiJ episode I referenced above. He goes into detail about the "natural therapy," and yeah, it sounds pretty wonky.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Their current top star and the number 2 star for the last 10+ years were grown in house, Lesnar was in house, Batista might as well been in house, even Ziggler was in house wasn't he? So yeah seems like they'd do ok for themselves if they went that route.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You've haven't loved anything as much as Bryan loves wrestling, I guess. It's tougher than you think.

    ReplyDelete
  76. The match we did get was pretty awesome, in fairness.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Bryan visiting "Suplex City" just sounds like a terrible idea given his health.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I wonder if this will irritate Punk given the fact that both he and the WWE were always butting heads whereas here they seem to at least give a shit about Bryan

    ReplyDelete
  79. If he was willing to take the Steve Austin route of adjusting his style to work around his limitations (which would first require him to admit his body can't go like it used to), then maybe he could keep going.

It doesn't seem like Bryan is that type of person, though. He's more like Kurt Angle or Benoit where it's either full speed or nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Awesome wrestler, and likely one of the last seasoned indy guys to really get a shot like that. I vote for GM Bryan.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oh I totally agree here. In some ways I wish they would've just told him "go get the surgery or don't come back". But business and all...

    ReplyDelete
  82. We really only got Punk's side of the story as disgruntled employee. Who knows what really went on. All indications are that Vince at least respected him.

    ReplyDelete
  83. As soon Austin was feeling better he started taking crazy bumps again and was once again out of wrestling. Remember the Edmonton match with Benoit?

    ReplyDelete
  84. I mean the whole thing just feels so pointless. If the plan was to have him come back and curtain jerk in a random IC title match then what's the point of taking such a risk? I could see if the plan was to have him come back and do Bryan/Lesnar while you can but to have him eliminated like a geek then just plugged into a match any other geek could've been involved in? That's what really hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Punk seems like the type to work through an injury not say anything and then complain about it. He even mentioned his "what would Harley do" mantra when he was champ.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The thing is, indy vets are polished workers, too. They're an asset.

The issue is that WWE kept on putting Bryan (and Punk) in too many hard-hitting gimmick matches against dangerous hosses. Bryan was wrestling twice on a RAW, on a Smackdown, on PPV in certain weeks and making all the house shows for months leading up to Mania. It's too much and anyone would break down from that grind.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't really consider OVW to be in house. It was an indy that WWE had a working relationship with.

NXT has more in common with the Power Plant than OVW: a single mindset production set that will produce standard talent that will be unable to break the mode.

In 10 years, WWE will more closely resemble a well-honed comedy act than sports entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Shawn Michaels was 32 going on 33 when he first retired. Bryan is 33 going on 34.

You know, a 4 year break did wonders for Michaels...

    ReplyDelete
  89. Random note -- when did the term "geek" replace "jobber," and why?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Kurt Angle came back sooner after even bigger surgery. And years later, look at him. He's fine, he's jumping around.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I don't know, I kinda get the bet-hedging. If the doctors cleared him and he wants to wrestle, would you keep your most popular- and best- performer off the biggest card of the year?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Daniel Bryan came along at the wrong time.

If this were the Attitude Era, he'd still be working through these injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Think how long Bryan's beard can get in four years!

    ReplyDelete
  94. That won't change anytime soon. Soon all their guys will be developed fully by their system and will be even more homogeneous and replaceable than they are now. I hope it works but I think it'll just be boring

    ReplyDelete
  95. Cena has been doing that for over a decade. Because he didn't waste it taking dumb bumps in armories for xtcrpw.

    ReplyDelete
  96. That's what I gather too. On one hand, they missed some good opportunities to do SO much more but at the same time I don't think anybody else would've been given the same chances Punk was given

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm not sure if this is why, but I know Bryan Alvarez used to use that word a lot when I was an Observer subscriber.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Well geek is what they called jobbers in the old days too but I think the difference is a geek in this sense is "just another body." They win some they lose some never really going above a certain level or stand out in anyway. A jobber is a guy that wouldn't even make the card. His role is to do nothing BUT lose.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The irony of Daniel Bryan is that he got over as this sincere, honest character that fans really empathize with, with a shaggy goat look that is the least sincere part of his career.

All the guy really wants to do is shave everything off and tend to his farm.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Does he need to find Jesus too?

Bless can be the new Yes.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I don't either.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I hope Brock returns with the shaggy goat beard since he can pull it off without looking like a homeless person.

    ReplyDelete
  103. It was pretty in house. Cornette has talked about it before how they would call him up and make him use this guy or use that guy or do this with that guy. They were all trained very much in the WWE way. I think people have been saying "in ten years the WWE will be this, or won't be that" has been being played since the Hulkamania era. I didn't see many people predicting the Network or that they would be posting such high grossing quarters such as this last one ten years ago. Nobody would have predicted that Punk and Bryan would be main event featured guys. So I think its easily proven that nobody has any idea what direction they will go or how successful they will be at it.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I said the same thing and that his insistence that he was all better after two treatments of dubious efficacy justified the company losing faith in his ability to stay healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  105. You're just spit balling now.

    ReplyDelete
  106. "The situation has brought a lot of frustration within WWE".

Of course it did, cause they are fucking assholes

    ReplyDelete
  107. I don't think that was the plan. In all likelihood, Bryan being cleared caught them totally off guard, there was no reason to keep him out if he was good to go and everything else was then finding places to fit him in while the big programs leading into WM were already set.

Honestly, did anything they did with Bryan from the Rumble onward feel like there was any planning behind it at all?

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'm just a bearded boy (bearded booooyy…)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yep. I love the guy, but he isn't Taker, Rock, Austin or HHH.

    ReplyDelete
  110. That's not fair. If you invest heavily in a guy and then he gets hurt and can't work then it's totally natural to be frustrated over that.
Forcing him to work would be bad, but being frustrated about the situation is totally natural.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Find Jesus? He looks like what most conservative Christians think Jesus looks like already!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Well Bryan/Sheamus was the reported plan and no of course nothing with Bryan after the Rumble was planned because they didn't expect Roman to get such a vicious reaction.

Ultimate point being if they weren't going to have him actually win the RR to go on to Wrestlemania what's the rush?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Triple H is barely special occasion worthy.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Lesnar and Ziggler both at least had a wrestling background.

    ReplyDelete
  115. He killed his body for a decade before he arrived to their company, surely they did not expect him in 2015 to still be able to go at that pace

    ReplyDelete
  116. I imagine that they did, or at least be able to work in a regular capacity. They didn't sign him to sit at home.
Obviously if you invest in someone, and then they don't return that investment as you'd hoped, there will be a level of frustration, even if the reason for non-performance is entirely legitimate.
If you've got Bryan DVD's to sell, and suddenly Bryan is persona non-grata, you're not saying "ok cool, no biggie!" is all. You obviously put his health first, but nevertheless have frustration about the situation. Anyone would.

    ReplyDelete
  117. They've been trying to get him NOT to work at that pace for years, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I wonder if Daniel Bryan has made more in his WWE career than a guy like R-Truth.

Maybe he should have been one of the guys that hide backstage hoping not to get picked for a Superstars match.

    ReplyDelete
  119. If my doctors cleared, them I'd trust them enough to put him in any role. If I didn't trust my doctors' diagnosis, I wouldn't employ them.

Obviously it's not that simple, but I do think this speaks to some kind of disconnect between the doctors, the company and the talent.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Dirt sheets have mastered the ability to say nothing in 3 paragraphs.

"Bryan can't wrestle still, as was said on Raw. People feel bad for Brian. There's no word on if he is getting surgery."

    ReplyDelete
  121. He arrived at their company in 2002.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Brock doesn't so much grow a beard as he commands hair to appear on his face at the appropriate length.

    ReplyDelete
  123. It's just kinda weird to me, I guess, because I associate "geek" with geek culture -- comics, games, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Ugh. Didnt know that. Hippie.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I agree, as he was talking about it on Talk is Jericho I thought something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  126. geek=loser=jobber
Calling someone a geek without intending it to be a put down is only about 15 minutes old.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I hope you meant "walk" to the ring, and that wasnt a concussion joke!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Well at least he can say he has Wrestlemania 30, Punk never main evented!

I think that pretty much wraps up anything to do with him in a major role anytime soon even if he does come back. WWE wouldn't trust him considering we now have back to back years of him giving up a title.

I would think he would be better of retiring, but obviously his call. Life is too short to deal with something permanently.

  138. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 13, 2015 at 4:52 PM

Yeah, I agree. Had Bryan not come back for the Rumble, even if he came back the next night (though I would have held him out until WM), and the crowd wouldn't have shit all over it. And beating Cena clean only to have Orton cash in and then hold up the title for a couple months was just shit booking.

  139. Theberzerker, #1 HUSS CHOMPIONMay 13, 2015 at 4:53 PM

I don't discredit holistic medicine or anything, like Lewis Black says, everyone's health is different. But clearly, the procedure Bryan got last year was not enough, and he came back too soon from it. Looks like he'll need full on surgery, and will be out for a while longer after it, but probably not AS long since he's already had one operation already. What's going to draw it out is Bryan himself doesn't want surgery and believes wholeheartedly in alternative treatments, so he's going to keep trying until there's no other choice left. I don't think his career is over, it's just going to continue to stall for a while until he relents and gets the full procedure that he needs.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Does that matter? YOLO.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Two operations are not necessarily better than one. And surgery itself is not a panacea...there are plenty of risks involved in any surgery, including death.

Bryan is not necessarily wrong just because he is avoiding surgery.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Theberzerker, #1 HUSS CHOMPIONMay 13, 2015 at 5:08 PM

I get that, and I'm not saying he's wrong, just that it's all coming down to the decisions he made, that's all. Greater point is I don't think his career is over...like others have said, taking a year or more off does wonders sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Punk was interested in making money outside of WWE. Some of his grumblings had to do with being forced to work a house show, when he had already gotten himself a gig signing autographs at Wizard World (which would have netted him more).

  145. His early stuff was mostly developmental (which WWE dumped, releasing him) and squash-like (extended sometimes, but he was the rough equivalent to an NWA jobber.)

Not until his "second run" with WWE in 2009 (FCW) and 2010 (NXT) would I agree that he'd "arrived"

    JESUS, DANIEL. STOP IT.

    STAY HOME.

    GET BETTER.

    STOP RUSHING.

  147. Probably a wish on the WWE's end to get Bryan to fulfill whatever dates were left on his current deal as long as he's healthy (if he got medical clearance, wants to come back and is still popular, there's no reason not to use the guy) and a wish on Bryan's end to wrestle because he loves doing it.

  148. He would be Nigel McGuinness

  149. They look even dumber for not having him in against Brock at Wrestlemania now. Have him get the big feel good underdog upset win and when he can't go have Seth Rollins be the little weasel who snakes in and takes it. Rollins saved us from Reigns which didn't really feel like an authentic bad guy move.

  150. Yeah but that was from one injury

  151. Watching the 1998 RAWs on the Network, and I'm only up to mid-April. The amount of times that they've said so-and-so has a concussion, and then they compete later, is almost terrifying.

  152. The night after Mania if Bryans music hit and he approached Roman like "Hey I never actually lost my title. " The place would've come unglued.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Ach. Just shitty news.

    ReplyDelete
  154. They don't look even dumber, they probably weren't even sure that Bryan would make it to Mania. I badly wanted Brock/Bryan too but I get why they didn't do it. I'm at least glad Bryan had one of the best Mania moments the year before and completed his story in that sense

    ReplyDelete
  155. I don't think they were making him do anything physically that he didn't insist on doing

    ReplyDelete
  156. No, they look smarter.

  157. "They look even dumber for not having him in against Brock at Wrestlemania now."

Nah, I feel the opposite. Plus when Rollins beats him and then Bryan retires, there's no comeuppance.

    ReplyDelete
  158. No, they should be frustrated. It's a frustrating time.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Stone Cold Steve Austin, bro.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Has Bryan said that he wants to "shave everything off"? I was under the impression that everything -- the beard, the long hair -- was his decision. He also seems like the "man of earth" type that would have a super shaggy beard.

And while he got MEGA over as the honest, sincere character, I would say that the thing that initially got him over was his outlandish celebrations after cheap or undeserved wins. If he had just shown up as a sincere character, it wouldn't have worked. It was a development of the heel character.

  161. Hell, even a few years ago. Didn't Mr. Kennedy get a severe concussion so they put him in a match with Edge (which included a pre-match beat down) to get the Money in the Bank briefcase off of him?

    ReplyDelete
  162. I think that had more to do with who he was competing with. He went from fighting Undertaker and Foley in brawl-centric matches to chain wrestling with Angle, Benoit, and Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Right, except for two things:

    1. Nobody had any way to know Bryan wouldn't be able to go after WM.

    2. Once he couldn't go, he couldn't go. As in, he couldn't safely wrestle a match to job the title.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Neville is my new Daniel Bryan. Sorry American Dragon but I've moved on

    ReplyDelete
  165. I suspect so. I bet he made more at wm 30 than truth made in any year.

    ReplyDelete
  166. As much as I understand why they didn't put Bryan in the match, I still think they should have - That was pretty much the only chance we had at getting Brock/Bryan, the ultimate underdog story, the ultimate David/Goliath story,

    ReplyDelete
  167. I have till 5. What? No, I didn't say I AM 5. I, look I'll come in again.

    ReplyDelete
  168. True, but chain wrestling doesn't necessarily mean taking multiple German Suplexes per night.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Bryan in a non-wrestling face role sucks, I'd rather not see more of that.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I see what you're saying, but only signing wrestlers that haven't actually wrestled (or wrestled much) is like saying that the NFL should only sign people that didn't play in high-school or college.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Cena's also an absolute freak of nature. If you look at his age and long list of injuries (and miles on the road), he's probably MORE beat-up than your average indy guy.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Bumps are bumps, no matter whose ceiling they're under.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Not to question Mr. Regal, but I would argue that there's a difference between teaching and learning. There's no substitute for experience.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Developmental is a completely different style than most indies. I'd bet you that the guys down there would ream somebody out for pulling a triple moonsault onto concrete in front of 45 people. I know Cornette would.

    ReplyDelete
  175. He probably is more beat-up than your average indy guy. And he's gotten that beat-up in front of millions of people and earned millions of dollars. Your average indy guy has done it in front of 30 people for 50 bucks.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I don't really think that a match with Lesnar would have been this big mushroom-cloud of destruction for Bryan's neck. Sure, if Brock were just suplexing him over and over, but both men are talented enough to put a great match together countless other ways.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Neidhart wasn't involved in that match.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Can't argue with that.

"Since Monday's RAW where he dropped the Intercontinental Title, the talk
has been that Bryan is trying to figure out a way to get cleared."

    That sounds ominous.

    ReplyDelete
  180. If Brock Lesnar isn't repeatedly suplexing people until they're legitimately hurt, I want my money back.
