Gobbledy gooker

Was what we got really the idea they originally wanted? Like THAT was planned out? As a kid I totally thought it was going to be the million dollar man's mystery partner. Which would have been funny to see taker come out of the egg.

Yes, that was really what they wanted.  They thought a Thanksgiving mascot was legitimately going to be this huge hit with kids, but of course the problem was that it was hyped like a wrestler debuting and expectations were raised too high in the wrong direction.  I think if they had just been like "And oh yeah, we'll debut our stupid dancing turkey, yee haw" then people might have panned it but then immediately forgotten it and moved on.  It was really the egg that sunk it and turned into the legendary bomb it was.

  1. There is a LOW roundtable about this. Even guys like Patterson didn't know who it was, he thought it was going to be Ric Flair.

Surprised it was never revived for Adam Rose's exotic express.

  3. In the defense of the Gobbledy Gooker, at least WWE didn't kill off any of their stars because of their mis-step.

It was dumb, stupid and dull, but it had no long term impact. Even the guy in the suit Hector Guerrero could have been repackaged quite easily as we never saw his face.

There's no doubt it was a stupid idea, but I think it gets blown out of proportion.

  4. Yeah I'd heard that rumour too. Imagine that. They debut Ric Flair coming out of a giant egg. Best idea/worst idea ever.

  5. That's how you kill him right out of the gate.

  6. It wouldn't have been the worst thing he done that year considering the Black Scorpion mess.

  7. I'm surprised that WWE hasn't used the Black Scorpion for a gag/cameo yet.
They mock everything else WCW has done.

  8. I think it's more a laughable moment than an angering one. They hyped something for ages and then it just died an awful death, being booed out of the building at a time when WWF crowds were a lot more accepting of pretty much anything Vince put in front of them

  9. Undertaker was also mentioned as he debuted at that show. Eggman.

  10. The Black Scorpion is such a little known WCW fuck up that it doesn't even register as a WCWLOL situation.

  11. If it had been a wrestler with a shaved head and evil mustache doing a gimmick based on Egghead from the Adam West Batman series it might have worked.

  12. Barry Darsow could have played that role.

  13. If you watch the syndicated 1990 shows (thanks DailyMotion!), they actually kept pushing the Gooker for a couple wks. Goes against the WWE (tm) narrative that it bombed at Survivor Series and disappeared. They tried!

  14. Black Scorpion = Higher Power. "It was me Stinger! It was me the whole time! Whoo!"

  15. Gene hyping it to be the Playmate of the Month probably didn't help matters.

What doesn't get mentioned often is Gene doing a huge faceplant when he starts running the ropes.

  16. Gene earned his payoff on that evening.

  17. Aye I had a pretty terrible video called WWF's Funniest Moments when I was a kid and I'm sure there were a few Gooker appearances on there from TV

What exactly was the Gooker supposed to do if it had went well?

Wrestler? Manager? Interviewer? Like what the fuck was the planned endgame here?

  19. I believe he was originally planned to be part of the Sgt Slaughter/General Adnan/Colonel Mustafa stable

  20. Still nobody remembers the Black Scorpion.

  21. The hate is probably in part because it encapsulated how the WWF was going for a children's audience. For many it was the 'jump the shark' moment.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It was Hector Guerrerro, so presumably a wrestler.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah he waa still kicking the house show circuit until early January 91. They gave it some time

    ReplyDelete
  24. Watching it play out on a weekly basis - it was obvious that they had no idea where to go with the characher. Really did Sting, #1 face and World Champion, no favors being the target in all that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Was he wrestling on the house shows?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nope. He came out and did the menu gene dancing spot with the ring announcer. It was awful. there is also a Dec 90 msg show taped where he does that too

    ReplyDelete
  27. Appear every year at Survivor Series and dance, probably?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, at some point they made people believe it would be Warrior. That was smart.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The rumour I'd heard was King Kong Bundy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Five count for Mean Gene, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I just wonder how you end up with hector Guerrero of all people for that role. Did he have to apply?

Team Bunny VS Team Gooker at Survivor Series this year.

  33. This needs to happen. Maybe go old school with Lawler's Midgets and the Knights?
