Joe v. Owens

Rumors circulated that Joe signed a 2-year deal with WWE and could make a surprise appearance at the NXT special.  With Zayn injured is there any likelihood and pulling the old "open challenge" (maybe Owens even mimics Cena) and out walks Joe!  Any shot, or this just a smark fantasy.  If not now, how do you think the WWE will actually book Joe?  Monster heel, bodyguard (muscle) for small heel, hard work face, Umaga 2???

First up, I’m out of town as you’re reading this, so I post-dated a few Q&As because I have shit internet access for the remainder of the long weekend.  So hopefully no wrestlers die before Tuesday.

Second, I finished the fifth season of SOA before I left, and HOLY SHIT is Jax one evil genius sumbitch.  Like, DAMN, you got served, Damon Pope.  And I presume by the end of the show Otto will be the Black Knight from Holy Grail, nothing but a torso on death row.

Anyway, I think Joe answering an open challenge is both plausible and awesome.  The pics that have recently circulated show him looking pretty ripped, so he certainly CAN have that WWE look if he wants to.  I think the UFC-ish shooter deal is where they’d go with him, and they should probably get him to the main roster ASAP because they desperately need threatening heels.  And although he’d get a monster babyface reaction from Smark Central at Full Sail, I really don’t want Kevin Owens to lose that belt any time soon.  Three years is a reasonable title reign, I feel.

  1. I have legit excitement for an in-shape Joe coming in.

"Three years to be a champion is a long time." If Andre said it, who are we to argue?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I see him having a no better WWE run than Tazz tbh

    ReplyDelete
  4. If one guy was gonna bypass the NXT system I'd have it be Joe. That said. I'd rather see his matches with Owens et al than trading wins on TV.

  5. Scott soa is great, things great really crazy at the end of season 6 and 7 is great. Also would the soa theme sog make a great entrance song for a wrestler?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Scott is out of town?

  8. I can't wait until Steen shows up on Raw and is randomly losing matches to Wade Barrett, should be really fun.

  9. Calling it now: Ric Flair dies.

    ReplyDelete
  10. My money is on Bryan

    ReplyDelete
  11. Considering they usually screw up wrestlers from other promotions. I don't see him being any different.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah but he'll beat him the week after.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Maybe I'm too cynical, but it's impossible for me to see WWE treat Joe as anything but a fat loser or a lesser Umaga at best.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think Joe has more guys on the inside who like him than Tazz did. He had a reputation for being a prick when he was in ECW.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, etc. have been crashing failures.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In spite of, because of...doesn't matter. And Rollins was ROH champ, so I don't see why he wouldn't count.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He was the ROH champion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah Sting, Goldberg, DDP and Booker did great things there.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's been literally 10 years now since Joe was something special. 6 years at the least since he quit trying. It's just over for him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. WCW is a separate story with Vince comparing dorito dink size with Turner until he's dead.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How did they screw up Sting or Booker??

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't agree with him but he likely means Wrestlemania 19

    ReplyDelete
  23. That shitty Irish remix, give it to Sheamoose

    ReplyDelete
  24. Depends how the higher ups see him. HHH may think Joe has something to offer, but if someone tells Vince Joe is a TNA star, that's that.

I wish I could upvote Scott's "Owens should have a 3 year reign" comment.

  26. Belee_Matt!_INDEED!!!May 17, 2015 at 12:20 PM

From what I've heard, HHH loves Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  27. He'll be fine in NXT, but when he gets called up then it's over. Same for Owens.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Which is weird because when his last contract was up Nobody was Eben interested in having a phone conversation with the guy and that was only a few years ago well within the time frame these other guys got signed. If he loved him that much I would have thought he'd be on the roster before he was pushing 40.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah season 5 is the major shift in jax's character, I would say he gets less endearing the last 2 seasons though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Booker had a terrific career in WWE. Sting was a one-off nostalgia deal.

I'd be willing to bet the "other promotions" guys' success rate, overall, is higher than that of WWE-created guys. Cherry-picking a handful of guys doesn't prove anything either way. Especially when some of them you're holding up as some sort of WWE failure were actually quite successful, they just didn't do whatever it is that you think they should have done.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Belee_Matt!_INDEED!!!May 17, 2015 at 12:29 PM

I'm just telling you what I read. I have no idea if it's true. I don't know HHH -- it's just been said that he loves Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  32. As we've talked about before, they don't bother introducing wrestlers to the audience before debuting. Everyone that watches NXT knows who Owens and Joe are. 25% of the Raw audience knows who they are and I think that's being generous. It would not kill them to film a vignette or two.

I don't watch NXT so I knew nothing about Neville and WWE tv hasn't bothered to tell me anything. He's had basically the same match since he showed up. At some point they have to do something more or people will just stop caring.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Groucho Dr. Facts MarxMay 17, 2015 at 12:29 PM

I've been saying do the Joe vs Owens open challenge for months

    ReplyDelete
  34. Owens was introduced with plenty of vignettes before he debuted. Same with Itami.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ah OK. I misread. Yeah, you're right. Every talent called up hasn't had vignettes except for maybe the Ascension.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Zayn and Neville got themselves over in the ring but WWE has done nothing with it. Zayn is injured but Neville has been placed on the hamster wheel with everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Taz was also immediately marginalized when the Radicalz fell into the WWF's lap like 8 minutes after the Rumble. At least Joe shouldn't have to deal with something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A couple weeks ago on one of the daily updates, there was a headline that TNA guys were told not to bother calling WWE to look for work. It's a bit of a headscratcher because any of the TNA guys would be rebooted in the performance center anyway. But if they really wanted Joe, it would have been done a long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I had never seen Taz before the Rumble. I only heard about his internet legend status. Not gonna say HHH was right to squash him but.......................

    ReplyDelete
  40. Owens vs Joe? Sounds like NXT Takeover PIEval. How bout it?

    ReplyDelete
  41. He's ripped? So we no longer can use "HE'S FAT!" ????

This is a sad day for Scott Steiner's freaks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tazz ended Kurt Angle's undefeated start to his career and Angle did a stretcher job his first night in. I don't know what happened after that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Biff Kensington Has a PosseMay 17, 2015 at 12:40 PM

Seriously, I love NXT when it's great, and Kevin Owens is playing his role to a hilt. But NXT wont keep the company going, the main roster will. And that show needs all the fucking help it can get. Move Owens up to the main roster along with Balor, Charlotte and Banks, then get Zayn up when he's healthy. Joe can take Owens's role for a few months until a new big babyface can be built up (Joe vs. Itami in a few months, anyone?)

    ReplyDelete
  44. If Bryan dies, I wonder if all the folks here who kept speculating on his health would feel good about the fact that they were right.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Tazz wasn't ever pushed at that level again and I understand it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah, I agree with you, I'm just saying I think that WWE higher ups feel like since he wasn't there before, there is nothing to show and the fans should know he's a big deal because he's there. It's funny that you use the Razor video because that's exactly the one I was thinking of.

    ReplyDelete
  47. A rematch with Joe at WrestleMania might be the only reason CM Punk ever steps into a WWE ring ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I didn't say it was likely.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I didn't say it was likely

    ReplyDelete
  50. Joe has two things going for him: He's well-liked by Triple H and is an old friend (though not necessarily a good friend) of Cena.

That might mean shit to Vince of course, but it's worth noting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bringing back Dave's Old Porn would be a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Story was that Joe didn't want to do the Umaga character so he shot them down, and then during the Big Johnny talent relation years he wasn't considered bc Johnny hated anyone chubby. Now it's being driven by HHH and he's wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Likely so considering that people have to pay at least $50 a month for cable if they want to see Duck Dynasty now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The one with him holding the medicine ball? You and I have very different definitions of ripped if that doesn't do it for you.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Shelton BenjaminMay 17, 2015 at 1:04 PM

What are you looking for in particular?

    Some sperm

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agreed. Doesn't take much for me regarding Trips and politics. But even after his MSG debut I didn't think Tazz would be a main eventer. Mid card badass that would give a main eventer 'a run for the money' was his top end,

    ReplyDelete
  57. Joe's tight with Cena too, which can't hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Shelton BenjaminMay 17, 2015 at 1:09 PM

Lol the guys with food poisoning

    ReplyDelete
  59. Adrian Neville is ripped. John Morrison is ripped. Samoa Joe is not ripped in that picture. There's literally no vascularity in his arms at all and that's the easiest place to have it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That picture is not anywhere close to ripped. He's (presumably) flexing and still has flab hanging over his biceps and no arm definition.

I mean he's in better shape than before, sure, but he could literally drop 30 lbs of fat before getting near "ripped"

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agree. Also need to keep in mind that Mankind and Steve Austin were both "other promotion" guys.

Not even close. They pay that for their cable package, not one show. No one is paying their cable bill exclusively for one program

    ReplyDelete
  70. Russo booking and fat chicks, apparently.

I thought that was the surest sure thing of all time. I may or may not have even posted a few times about how the Awesome signing was going to get WCW back to #1.

    Whoops.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey bro, I got just the thing - FAT CHICKS, BRO.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Kinda wish he'd gone to the WWE pre-invasion. A 300lb guy who can fly? He'dve been world champ 3 times, minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bad Moon Rising. Someone in the AWA used that as entrance music, don't remember who though.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think Owens has a shot if he continues getting in shape. He won't be the badass heel he is in NXT, but I think he has the charisma to pull off a decent character. Joe, I don't see it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. That's kinda understandable; a lot of TNA guys have some major mileage on themselves. Plus, they've signed TNA guys before, and, well, Chris Harris and Monty Brown didn't exactly set the world on fire. (In Brown's defense, it wasn't his fault.)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Even when Joe has been in good shape before, those Samoan genetics can't be beat. He's still blubbery no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Exactly. Name a samoan wrestler with a ripped physique. Rocky's the closest and he was never that cut.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I saw John Fogerty live at the Murat in Indianapolis in 2007. When he performed that song, he actually sang "bathroom on the right" in the last line.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Awesome was my favorite ecw guy, hands down. It's a real shame he never got a break in wcw or wwf. He was the man.

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's cruel right there.

    ReplyDelete
  81. ThebrazilianpsychoMay 17, 2015 at 1:45 PM

He and Raven were awesome, they should've been world champions in WCW/WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Monty Brown. Damn. He really had a bright future.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Kinda feel like SOA should have ended after season 6. Season 7 was ok, but in hindsight, kind of predictable and a bit by the numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I know I'm wishing for something that can't be true, but they better just let Joe be Samoa Joe and not, Tonga Tom Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Naw, it needed to end with the thing that it ended with.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Personally, I'm voting for a full reinstatement of the wild Samoan gimmick. Grass skirts & turkey legs or GTFO!

    ReplyDelete
  87. eh. As poetic as it felt, it was a let down to me.

    ReplyDelete
  88. WCW went through alot of trouble and money to get Awesome and it was like they brought him in just to humiliate him. Awesome said he was happy to get released from WWE because the politics and locker room stuff was out of control.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yup. 2003 Samoa Joe was very solidly built but definitely not anywhere close to competing in a bodybuilding contest.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Fiji frank? Palau Pete?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Couldn't talk people into buying tickets or PPV's.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Not that corporate structures like WCW & WWE would ever let Raven be the face of their companies anyway, but they would have to deal with someone who isn't going to roll with whether he's told and intelligently tell them why.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Awesome DID debut by beating up an incredibly well hair conditioned Nash with his own crutches, who was in the middle of TOTALLY SHOOTING BRO. Like with all things Russo, great start, but...

    ReplyDelete
  94. And he's only half Samoan.

    ReplyDelete
  95. not really as a full time wrestler. he looked like a fucking action figure for Hercules.

    ReplyDelete
  96. That was a helluva debut as the ECW PPV was barely mentioned as per the agreement that was made. Awesome in his power mullet flipping off the crowd was pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Oh yeah, lol, forgot about them dicking over Heyman.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'd say that a good 25% of the general WWE audience would know Joe, he's been on TV for a dozen years, but Owens? A lot of NXT fans were barely of him.

    ReplyDelete
  99. No everyone was willing to hurt themselves to get Awesome over like Tanaka did.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I didn't say you couldn't order the PPV on Time Warner, genius. Direct TV, Dish Network, and AT&T U-Verse all dropped WWE PPVs when WWE launched the Network, and that's a significant chunk of the PPV market. It'll likely take more that Vince saying "Gee, sorry, we were wrong" to get them to come back with decent terms. Since they would know the Network failed and PPV would be the only option, what would stop, say, Direct TV, from demanding twice as much of a cut from WWE? WWE would be negotiating from an even weaker position.

I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of fans who would pay $55 a month for WWE PPVs after more than a year of only paying $9.99 a month. Not to mention that buyrates were ALREADY dropping over the past few years pre-Network as fans either lost interest in the product or figured out how to illegally stream PPVs for free.

As for fans who still pay $55 for PPVs, the 100k or so people who still pay for PPVs (and it's been as low as 50k) probably don't even generate enough money to justify Brock's contract.

    ReplyDelete
  101. New Generation Podcast covered Bash at the Beach '96 this week, so I'm feeling the Hostile Takeover Match at the moment.

My first thought - GODDAMN, was WCW's video production people miles behind the WWF's. That prematch video package blew.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Dicking over Heyman? Heyman owed Awesome quite a few grand and wanted Awesome to sign a new contract. Awesome refused unless he was paid his owed back pay. Heyman didn't have it, and WCW had a contract waiting for him.

    If anything, Heyman screwed Heyman.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Oh, I know that, just the "make sure to plug our PPV when he runs in" aspect.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Felt a bit like Kurt Sutter dragged some of the storylines out because he liked keeping some of the actors around, and I know he wanted to tell a lot of story, but it felt like practically every episode was a TV movie. I didn't mind season 6, but season 7 felt like it really dragged until we got the end we got. Compare it to how Justified wrapped up, felt like the journey to Justified's ending was more satisfying. I think Kurt Sutter's a decent bloke, but could have used an editor to cut the episodes down in length those final 2 seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Joey Samoey

    ReplyDelete
  106. Careful now....I haven't seen the last season of Justified. Waiting for Amazon Prime or disc rental. But, yeah, I agree with you about the last two seasons, particularly 7.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oh yeah, that part.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'll just say, it's a major improvement on season 5.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Would Connor's Dad induct him next year?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I like Rappaport, but he wasn't as convincing a character as Daryl Crowe as we was on the recent episode of Louie - that suited him better, but i'll admit, I loved the opening to season 5 episode 12, with the Wynn-e-bago (c) Alan Sepinwall.

    ReplyDelete

  112. "A lottery was held to form this great team defending WCW..." I don't recall the Rumble tumbler being used before the Bash, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'd have to go back and review the seasons, but off the top of my head, I'd say 3 was probably best.

    ReplyDelete
  114. That's not what you said. You said they pissed of cable companies (you listed two, the other were satellite providers) when in reality they are still on the biggest cable providers in the U.S.

Your other point was most people wouldn't pay 55 for what they got for 10, which is false. If the people want to watch it they will pay the money. It never stopped them before. It's supply an demand.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I blame Jeff Jarrett.

    ReplyDelete
  116. "Tony, could the third man be sitting next to us?" Yeah, later on as the nWo dragged on and on Dusty Rhodes DID join up, but now I can't help but think Dusty waddling down to the ring and Tony telling Dusty to go STRAIGHT to hell before signing off.

  158. I said they pissed off cable companies and I listed two plus two satellite companies. That's a good chunk of WWE's former PPV business that can play hardball if WWE comes crawling back.

And yes, I imagine people who paid $9.99 for PPVs will not be thrilled with paying $55 again. If movie tickets shot up to $50, people would obviously go to less movies.

Great logic, mate. For the record, Samoa Joe is definitely one of my favorite wrestlers and was at one time, probably the best wrestler in North America.

  170. Comcast charter and twc are a larger part of the cable landscape of the USA. You can add in a bunch of local companies that carry wwe ppvs along with Verizon fios too.

Truthfully part of the audience that has the network (iwc mostly) would go back to bootlegging and the product would continue getting more or less the same lower buys

  173. I was just about to email you Scott on how far you had gotten with Sons now. I was going to say that I couldn't believe you were only that far, but then I remembered works, kids, yada, yada.

There's a comment I want to make about season 6, but I'll wait till you finish. There's something that happens and I'll definitely be interested in your thoughts on it.

  174. Don't agree with this at all.

  175. Thing with Sutter is he was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO involved with SOA, writing nearly everything. Add to the work he was doing on the shield and I'm sure there was burn out.

I don't get as rustled about the seasons starting slow and then building to the big climax until the last few episodes as a lot of people do. Breaking Bad was notorious for that too.

I think we can agree that shows like that would NEVER work on network tv with their "Every season needs to be 25 episodes" policy.

Cable gets drama right. Said it before and will say it again. I'm still trying to get through supernatural and there's been a lot of redundancy. That's a show that could use a few seasons cut out.

  176. Is that that the one where they were like policemen with huffys?

  177. I don't want to spoil anything for Scott, but I don't think people get that that certain character dying left a bunch bigger whole than many thought it would.

  178. yeah, but it was inline with the character who...um...instigated the dying.

  179. He also has black genetics too. A friend of mine, whose also black, can literally workout for ten minutes a month and be the most ripped guy ever.

  188. Really? I love both shows, but Justified's ending left me thinking "...Oh. Okay." Just kinda anti-climatic. It didn't have the "this is the last episode of the show" feeling to me.
