Kevin Owens

Hey Scott.

Just a quick thought on Kevin Owens. While Brock is his own  beast, do you think Owens could play a similar Monster Heel roll down the line? I think you mentioned his little kick at Riley after their match a few weeks back but I actually laughed out loud after he casually walked on him after getting the pin in their rematch this week. Plus the "are you cold promo" earlier on in the night was gold. What's your take?

Cheers
BC

His sitdown with Michael Cole this past week was even better.  He plays a very different type of character than anyone else in WWE, which instantly makes him over and marketable.  He's the shit-talking bad guy who instantly backs down from confrontations unless he's in complete control. Or has the chance to hit someone from behind.  And then he backs up all his big talk in the ring, so you hate him even more.  He's just great.

  1. which is why if Vince gets his hands on him he will be doing back stage comedy bits with fandango

  2. I'm pretty sure there have been a few times HHH has to bite his lip when it comes to Vince, but he would have to bust out his sledgehammer if Vince is thinking about repackaging Owens

    Really like the character

  5. Brock is 6'3", 295lbs of solid muscle and is a former UFC and NCAA champion. He can F5 the Big Show without breaking a sweat. The guy IS a monster.

Owens is 6'0", 266lbs and looks more like a competitive eating champion than a wrestling champion. He can toss around guys the size of Adrian Neville and Sami Zayne, but he's not looking like a "monster" against anyone bigger than that.

  6. I love Owens' character but I worry it will be unnecessarily tweaked for the main roster. I see Vince scoffing at the cool 'family man' aspects of the character because 'family men are supposed to be babyfaces.' Then we get Sniveling Heel No. 4325.

I would pay to see Lesnar and Owens go to Suplex City for 15 minutes.

Owens isn't the world eating crushing monster type like Brock but he's the scary violent type, like a Kevin Sullivan or even Terry Funk. To get the scary factor down they'll have to have him take some people out, apron bomb announcers, shit like that, but it'll work.

  9. He is in an internet troll come to life.

  10. It definitely will. Just gotta hope it is nothing too bad that can't be ditched in a few weeks.

  11. This is the unavoidable truth. Owens is FAT!

  12. I really don't envy HHH, being stuck with a ridiculous crop of talent that's getting older one day at a time and not being able to promote them to the main roster confidently because he'll be putting them in the hands of a senile gargoyle who doesn't understand how a leggy blond can be a heel, how a guy under 6'4" is supposed to be taken seriously or that you can't just toss someone new out in front of a crowd and say "here, here's this new guy you like, LIKE HIM DAMN IT."

He must watch every Neville match on Raw through his fingers.

  13. Neville got lucky. He got repackaged, but it wasn't anything that can't be dropped without damaged. That is going to happen to every NXT dude. No one is just gonna come up.

  14. So was Mick Foley.

  15. I wish they'd let Rollins back it up in the ring just once without J&J or Kane or the Authority.

He could play dirty if he wanted, but he's so amazing in the ring, the most bad assed I've seen him was the triple threat before he won the belt. He doesn't need it often, but just often enough to make him legitimate.

  16. Speaking of this weeks NXT, Becky Lynch needs a new finisher, she looked like she nearly tore Sasha's arm out of socket when she lost balance and fell over. Too sloppy.

  18. He'a been trimming up, he's gotta be down 10 lbs since his ROH days. Weird that it's better to be a big Bull Dempsey, Brodus Clay than to be a moderately heavy Bray Wyatt, Kevin Owens type.

  19. The lack of an avatar is disappointing.

  20. Would he be considered a tully Blanchard type heel or more like someone else. Ive long said the wwe needs a tully Blanchard type heel

  21. Did I just read someone saying that a once in a lifetime genetic freak world class athlete with a fat guy that won't get in the pool without a shirt on?

  22. He's a monster because of his actions, not his appearance.

Apron Bombs and stretcher jobs and brutality will make people respect him

  23. I'm still hoping they change his character to Garcon Poutine, Competitive Eater, once he gets promoted to the main roster.

  24. With the right character, anybody can be a monster of one kind or another.

  25. There's something wrong in the world if we agree. I feel so dirty.

  26. I always wished WCW would have gotten successful without Hogan and was still around, because that's somewhere that I think Owen's would get booked better. In spite of their potato decisions at times, there were guys that they did a better job with than the WWF. The Tully Blanchard thing was mentioned below and I agree with that.

  27. But disco music and talking about his Momma will make people love him!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mick Foley also took power bombs into thumb tacks, though. KO aint even allowed to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love his refusal to admit he's the biggest asshole in the business and constantly hides behind that he's "just trying to provide a better life for my family."

Yes, but I have a feeling that "I do what I do to feed my family" gets him turned face by the crowd on the main roster even if he saws both of Daniel Bryan's arms off in the middle of the ring.

Love that angle. Think he's a monster. Not sure that character works as a true heel on the big stage.

I'd love to see what the bars look like where you love where only underwear models know how to fight. Go outside the twink spots once in a while, you might see some real men throw down.

  32. I love Owens but you're right here, Dougie.

  33. No, Kevin Owens isn't going to be a Brock Lesnsr style monster. Is this a serious question? Heel? Sure. Badass? Definitely. Terrifying force of nature like Brock? Fuck no. Brock has a presence that can exude menace without a word and a once in a generation look to back it up.

Owens looks like a pissed off garbage man, not a terrifying monster. No amount of jerking off to RoH tapes is going to change that.

When he finally confesses that his 'family' is a Humner and a giant mansion filled with Molson and Tim Horton's, he'll be the biggest heel who ever heeled.

  35. Some old school heels like Stan Hansen and Dr. D David Schultz justified their actions by saying they did it for their families as well.

  38. Owens is a great talent.

Can't wait to see how Vince f^cks him up.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like that Owens isn't just a straight monster heel.

He's a great hypocrite heel that picks his battles extremely well. It's unique, he brutalizes people like a monster heel, but he's reprehensible and cowardly like a chickenshit and it's not illogical or inconsistent.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Owens and Brock are WAY different characters, and Owens would be laughable in Brock's role. I don't see the comparison at all. No way I'd buy Owens kicking the shit out of Cena/Reigns/etc. the way Brock did.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Owens only stands out on the inside. Brock Lesnar is a physical freak of nature. You need only an instant to look at him and be impressed.

  42. And I wish I could shit solid gold. And, of course, that my internal plumbing was such that it wouldn't cause me immense pain to do so.

Owens has been amazing as a character, but no way a dude his size gets to be a dominant monster. He's about the size of Rusev or Ryback. Maybe as a face (like Reigns), but not a monster heel.

I don't know why "pissed off garbage man" made me laugh so ridiculously hard, but it did. Thank you.

Did he really get repackaged, though? He dropped the smarminess, but he's pretty much the same guy with new tights.

And am I crazy, or is Scott's description of what makes Owens so unique also 100% compatible with Rollins' character?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Rollins is fantastic. A throwback heel in many ways.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rollins is a lot more cowardly than Owens, and he loses a lot more fights and his entitlement comes from a different place than Owens.

But there is a similarity to them.
