When we last left WCW, they were the
undisputed kings of the Monday Night Wars and that’s certainly still the
case as they come into 1998. Things were so good that they decided to
more than double the amount of television they were airing per week. To
say this might have been too much too soon is an understatement but WCW
had done stupider stuff before.
In this book, I’ll be looking at every episode of
Monday Nitro and Thunder from January through June of 1998. This is the
time where the Monday Night Wars finally started to get competitive
again after nearly two years of being completely one sided. Having two
shows a week was a fresh idea as well, making this a very important time
in wrestling history. As usual I’ll be providing play by play,
historical context and analysis of every show.
Also remember that I’ve already covered 1995-1997
Monday Nitro in case you don’t want to jump right into the later stuff.
Both books are available from my Amazon author page.
The books runs over 300 pages on a Kindle and only

from 1998 and Clash of the Champions at my author’s page here.
I hope you like it and shoot me any questions you might have.

As a general question, how much do you make off of these? I was wanting to potentially assemble my reviews and do something similar, but I wanted to see if it would be worth the time/effort.
ReplyDeleteThis and the website are my job. I certainly don't make a fortune but I make enough that I don't have to have a 9-5 job. However, a lot of that is due to having a pretty good audience already and a big library of these to pick from. It took time but enough people buy the old ones to add to the new ones to make it work.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Bischoff against the idea of adding Thunder but Turner basically forced him to do it?
ReplyDeleteThat's what he said, so I'm not sure if I believe it or not.
ReplyDeleteI believe it. They weren't getting TV revenue so writing and delivering two more prime hours of television every week (atleast at first) wouldn't be much benefit to him.
ReplyDeleteYou actually make a living off of writing about wrestling? That's fucking nuts. Good for you, man.
ReplyDeleteYup. Turners call 100%

nor do I. Remember January 97 Bischoff was trying to add an NWO only show. He even did a Nitro to test it out and it tanked. So he was, at least in January 97, interested in a 2nd show. So saying a 2nd show was forced on him is BS. That said, I'm sure his plans for a 2nd show involved being paid properly for it. Higher production budget, higher pay for crew that is now putting on 2 primetime shows each week (or as he says in his book, he got the leftovers from Turner sports).
ReplyDeletesee my post below. Bischoff wanted a second show, I just don't think he liked the terms that were given for Thunder (no added production budget)
ReplyDeleteThe reported $12mm WCW got from Turner probably helped Bischoff change his mind.

ReplyDeleteThat's awesome. One day I hope to make some e-books of my older WWF reviews.
ReplyDeleteI think you're a year out. That nWo Nitro was December 97. It would have been a test for Thunder itself.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Met the girl I'm going to marry in July off a wrestling forum too.
ReplyDeleteI was sad that Thunder essentially killed the Clash of Champions. Sure it was on life support and had no real function anymore but with the January/August schedule they had used the prior 2 years, I was hoping for one in January 98. That's also when the Main Event was cancelled and Pro nearly vanished. I know it's nostalgia talking but I'd take Bobby Eaton vs Greg Valentine in a Main Event exclusive over Thunder any day.
