The staff over at Place to be Nation have voted to determine which wrestler in North America earned the title of the "Real World Champion" for each given year. Wrestlers were determined by the following factors: workrate, drawing ability, influence, and general overall presentation. Don't think of this as which actual champion was the best but rather which wrestler of a given year best represented a combination of all these factors, the factors in which you would look for in a champion. Alright, so what do you guys think? Any disagreements with the list?
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on pretty much everything, so I find this extremely well done. Maybe I'd put Savage above Flair in '87, but that's personal taste.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see one of these lists for tag teams. Well, up until 2005 or so perhaps.
ReplyDeleteYou are in luck... that is the next installment!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! On that one I may end up disagreeing more. It'll be interesting for sure!
ReplyDeleteGood list. Just curious did you pick Angle because The Miz was simply not an option? Lol
ReplyDeleteI wanna disagree with Angle in 2010 but that's bc I never watched TNA. Anytime I did see Angle in TNA, it was just depressing.
ReplyDeleteBut who from WWE should get the nod? Cena? Barrett?
Maybe partly, but Angle was REALLY good in 2010, which a lot of folks may not realize due to TNA and all. But he had some truly great matches and had tons of momentum built up over the summer.
ReplyDeleteThe only WWE guy that got strong consideration that year, IIRC, was Rey. Until the injury, he was having a fantastic year.
ReplyDeleteAngle was terrific though. His stuff vs. Anderson at the beginning of the year was particularly good.
Solid list.
ReplyDeleteJust to play Devils advocate, because am by no means a Miz fan. I think if you take away work rate which Miz gets slaughtered in and drawing ability which lets be honest TNA never drew ,it's a lot closer than it has any right to be. Although i do agree Angle wins wIth overall presentation. But being the 2nd heel to walk out of Wrestlemania is huge though even tthough he was barely the focal point.
ReplyDeleteMy disagreements:
ReplyDelete1984: Flair. I'd give Piper more consideration for 1986, after his face turn.
1987: Hogan (considering the success of WrestleMania III, I'd go with Hulk. Hell, Flair lost the NWA title to Ronnie Garvin!!!)
1994: I like Bret for the pick, but you could argue for Flair.
1990: Hulk
1991: Bret
1999 & 2001: Steve Austin
Really good list. Kudos to everybody for taking the time to do list.
These lists have been pretty solid. I would have put Austin in for 2001 but otherwise I agree totally.
ReplyDeleteSolid. I only had 3 serious disagreements with it
ReplyDeleteMiz walked out of mania in 11, not 10.
ReplyDeleteSonofabitch. That's why I never participate in these conversations all these years just bleed together. My apologies.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeremy! I think all of your choices are accurate too and those guys were easily in the discussions of those years;
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDelete1991 is such a toss-up
ReplyDeleteGood call on Savage
ReplyDeleteAgree with all choices except Angle for 2001. Still think Austin takes it. Completely reinvented his character and created the most uttered catchphrase in wrestling history. Great list though.
ReplyDelete2008 Jericho might be my favorite character of all time. Such a prick and won some matches! Still wish he wasn't sacrificed to returning Cena at survivor series.
