Quick and Easy Blog Question

Hi Scott,

On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely do you think it is that the following will turn up in NXT at some point, either as quick one-off appearances, or in a more involved role?

And (on the same scale) how much would you want them to be involved there?

Daniels

Kazarian

Styles

Samoa Joe

John Morrison

Bully/Bubba Ray

Shelton Benjamin

And do you think the WWE will try to get any more big Japanese names into NXT – someone like Nakamura, for example?

That's neither a quick nor easy question.  That's multiple questions with multiple parts.  Just saying.

Daniels:  1.  Too old for developmental, makes more money on the indies and has no shot of making the main roster anyway.

Kaz:  1.  Same answer.

Styles:  1.  They already offered him a deal and he turned it down for New Japan.

Samoa Joe:  10.  Coming in July.

JoMo:  5.  He'll probably end up coming right back to the RAW roster when he returns, but I could see him doing a one-shot at some point.

Bully Ray:  1. Not worth it to him when he could be promoting his own stuff or whatever.

Shelton:  10.  He's already there as "Angelo Dawkins".  Duh.

Nakamura is too old for them I'm pretty sure, but they've openly made a play for Okada and will probably end up getting him at some point.

Comments

  1. Shelton appearing in NXT would do nothing but disappoint people.

I was one of those that thought he was going to be a sensation in ROH when he and Haas debuted because it would give him a chance to cut loose. Instead, both he AND Haas were exposed as lazy. Shelton in particular has been coasting for more than a decade, still riding off the wave of his big match with Michaels and a couple of spots in ladder matches.

  2. Unless they are well connected (Samoa Joe) or can potentially bring an international audience (Itami, Balor), I think very few wrestlers 33 or older have a chance of making the NXT roster. WWE can just create their own American wrestlers from 25 year old athletes who don't make the big leagues

Everytime WWE offers a deal to Okada NJPW up his salary. He's the heir of NJPW throne.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wait, when did they offer Okada? Okada backed by Heyman would be all kinds of awesome -- until he jobs to HHH, Cena, and maybe Sarah Taker. Vince hasn't forgotten Pearl Harbor.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Shelton and Bubba should be brought in to work with and develop the talent.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Is there even a market for Morrison? If they want an athletic guy that doesn't put together the greatest of matches and sucks on the mic, they have ziggler for that.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How could he forget? He just found out last week

    ReplyDelete
  8. WWE needs as much proven talent as they can get. I don't think Mundo wants to be back there, though. If he did, he would have returned a long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Morisson is pretty entertaining, but WWE is not the right place for him, he is doing is best work to date in LU

    ReplyDelete
  10. It's true. Shelton was one of favourite wrestlers to watch based on the sheer athleticism he had (I think he's the best pure athlete ever in WWE). But then he stopped trying, it seems. Even his New Japan stuff, where he can really bust out, is kinda meh.

    ReplyDelete
  11. and all their creation kind of suck : Reigns, Corbin, Ryback, ...

    ReplyDelete
  12. He was pretty over when he left and would still be if he came back.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I like how we never get new references about "WWE gonna bury him!"

It's always the Sara Taker joke from fifteen years ago or HHH from 13 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  14. the classic are always the best

    ReplyDelete
  15. Reigns hardly sucks. Whoever was writing his promos does.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Which is hilarious considering Sara and Taker divorced and HHH has shown nothing but ass for two years.

    ReplyDelete
  17. he kind of do

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of anybody they buried who wasn't a prominent WCW main eventer.

And fuck anybody who says "Daniel Bryan."

    ReplyDelete
  19. Like how HHH put over Sting at Wrestlemania?

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's because those two guys are still around, picking up WM wins.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Ryback doesn't suck!

    You suck!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Totally consistent with having the best match on three straight PPVs.

Vince finding out about cultural events decades later would be a great network show.

"What do you mean we landed on the moon?!?"

    ReplyDelete
  24. Morrison is maybe a thousand times better than ziggler.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I get that. But Triple H is only wins "circus attraction" matches now and Cena intentionally de-elevated himself.

    And Sara Taker? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Love-Matic Grampa!May 10, 2015 at 8:56 AM

Sting should be the new standard bearer for WWE burials. That was truly epic.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Love-Matic Grampa!May 10, 2015 at 8:57 AM

Sara Taker pinning DDP was pretty egregious, though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't know if that was a burial, Dougie, but Sting v. HHH was awful.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is false.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Disagree. I don't really see makes Morrison a "thousand times" better than Ziggler. At least Ziggler hits his finisher

    ReplyDelete
  31. New troll in the house!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah. But that was fifteen years ago. That's a longer amount of time than between Hogan winning the title and Austin winning the title.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey Osiris! Things slow at that other forum where you talk about how cool the BOD is?

    ReplyDelete
  34. The whole storyline was crap. Yea let's take one of the most over faces from WCW and turn him into a creepy stalker heel and then bury him

    ReplyDelete
  35. We were discussing whether it's creepy to lust after Alex after Modern Family

    ReplyDelete
  36. it's a shoot brother !

    ReplyDelete
  37. That was REALLY bad. But at least it was against a 60 year old instead of an up and comer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. They should have just set fire to a million dollars. It would have made them as much money and been less painful to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  39. that will teach him to not stay at home with his big WCW contract !

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, but his finisher, like all his offense, sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  41. He hadn't been an over face for at least two years at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I see why people don't like him, but I enjoy his matches and he has a connection to the crowd. Morrison seemed to be badly phoning it in toward the end

    ReplyDelete
  43. Next week, Cena vows to land on the moon before Rusev.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He was in the main event of the last ppv WCW did. He was as over as anyone in that dying company was at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  45. the miz also suck

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't get Scott's Shelton Benjamin joke. Is it the "Vince thinks all black people look alike" thing again?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do you think that's high praise? And Booker was waaaay more over. Ddp's peak as an over babyface was in 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Disagree about Bully/Bubba Ray, he will end up a trainer and like The Brian Kendrick will make at least one appearance.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It says more about said PPVs than about Reigns

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yep. Dragging a four star match out of Big Show. Totally the PPVs fault.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Why the hell does Bubba keep going back to shitty TNA? Wwe won't hire his gf?

    ReplyDelete
  52. is that your own ratings ? Scott had it at ***1/4 wich is just ok

    ReplyDelete
  53. ThebrazilianpsychoMay 10, 2015 at 9:14 AM

**1/2 at best, they overblown the table spots.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Disagree. I thought the match was a lot of fun and really helped put over Reigns

    ReplyDelete
  55. It is still surreal that this promotion exists as part of WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 3 and a half is great.

See, this is a five star system. 0 to 5. **1/2 is the center and thus "okay." ***1/2 is a full star above "just ok."

So if we're treating Scott's grade as law, you're still wrong.

    Math is hard!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I liked him a lot. He's not great on the mic but he has excellent unspoken charisma, and he actually did cut decent enough promos when he was a serious face rather than a "dog-food breath" quip-slinging goofball face. His matches were generally highlights of the CM Punk as top guy on Smackdown era.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I really don't think they want poor Bubba.

    ReplyDelete
  59. No need to be condescending

    ReplyDelete
  60. I guess that's more du to the booking, but i hate how WWE try to cheat their way out of the stipulation by having the winner physically preventing the looser to stand up.
Just let one man standing tall and the other down for the 10 count

    ReplyDelete
  61. Is Angelo Dawkins even still there?

    ReplyDelete
  62. He's also had a self-inflated view of his worth. WWE prob gave him a decent offer and he wanted more.

    ReplyDelete
  63. This! I get the sense that he has no real desire to go back. The only reason why he says that he's "open to coming back" during interviews is to leave some carny "never say never" level of doubt to fans who keep asking whether he will ever comes back. It's the same reason why Steve Austin usually says he's open to "one more match" when he has no real intention of ever wrestling again.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The WWE always posts the Best 25 Instagram photos of the week on Sunday and each week Brie Bella gets closer and closer to resembling a skeleton.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Christ, I sent this email in months ago, I'm sure! Hahah!

Was thinking of most of them as Kendrick-style one shots, rather than permanent fixtures, admittedly.

    ReplyDelete
  80. That might be the problem, they want Bubba but not Bully.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If they start being a touring brand, i can see some of these guys coming for a short period of time like Ryhno to put over some of NxT homegrown talents

    ReplyDelete
  82. Daniels could be the Terry Funk of NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  83. More freedom, less touring.

    Bryan, take to a restaurant.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Agree on that. Better offense, better look, better music, better name, better character that doesn't come across like a clown.

I enjoy Ziggler too but I think Morrison's upside is way higher.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Random thought:

I think the same cognitive conceit that keeps HHHH and SaraTaker burying DDP in our minds has benefited Daniels and AJ more than anybody.

It's like we forget that these guys aren't just old they're approaching ancient for wrestlers. I don't know if it's selective blindness, indy bias or an indy blindspot, but Daniels has been prominent pretty much since 01. For some reason that whole invasion time period just stays fresh in our memories for some reason, instead of fifteen years ago where it belongs.

    ReplyDelete
  94. We're like 0.7 Daizee Haze here.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I've always thought that it would be a great idea to bring guys like that in for limited house show runs. Pump up the house a bit and let the younger guys work with experienced veterans ala what Jericho is doing now. I know I'd be more inclined to go to a random house show in my area if I could see Jericho or a guy like Daniels or Kazarian working with a younger guy rather than the usual Miz vs. R-Truth match I'd likely get.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Vince probably has a literal dead horse in Titan Towers somewhere with "WCW" spraypainted on it that he kicks every morning as a warmup before he goes to the gym.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I would argue that Christopher Daniels at 45 is still better than at least 65% of the current WWE roster.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Three years ago I'd agree but there's been a lot of talent come in since NXT existed.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Doesn't matter to WWE. Right now the mindset is to build stars from scratch, not scour the indies for the best lightweight flippy-dippies.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Haha, Gorilla and Alfred during a Billy Jack vs Hercules Hernandez match on Prime Time in 86:

Something to keep in mind: in the past, most wrestlers weren't even considered for headlining spots until they were nearly 40 (with some notable exceptions). The feeling was that you needed that time on the road and in different territories to hone your skills and develop a reputation. Granted, things are much different now, but just because a wrestler is on the wrong end of thirty doesn't mean that he's useless. Some guys are just finding their groove at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Vegan restaurants probably aren't helping, she needs some steak.

    ReplyDelete
  107. In all due respect to Scott, he's not the law on star ratings. I think Meltz gave it 4-stars, and while I agree with that rating, it's not because Meltz said it. I thought it was a great match that utilized the gimmick to the best of their abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I love Ricardo Mayorga. That guy is a pure heel and he ran out of fucks to give long ago.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Which one will go to the papers if he has to?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I've never got around to looking it up, but I wonder if Alfred was any good in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  111. That and he also have a gimmick really close to the old World Greatest Tag Team with his partner

    ReplyDelete
  112. I am of the mind that Daniels has never been prominent.

    ReplyDelete
  113. He was decent; basic technical wrestler/British heel, but he had some good matches with Terry Funk and Billy Robinson.

    ReplyDelete
  114. That's where Austin got that from, right?

    ReplyDelete
  115. With Funk? Huh. In the states or in England?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Daniels is a freak of nature. He's as good now as he's ever been and he's wisely extending his career by being a part of a tag team.

AJ is hitting his stride right now and went from being another guy on IMPACT to one of the best in the world. He regularly has incredible matches with Okada and Tanahashi and has somehow elevated the IWGP championship.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I've said it before: I don't know why I was there as Angelo Dawkins when I was already there as Percy Watson

    ReplyDelete
  118. WM 27

You need to sleep the hangover off

    ReplyDelete
  119. WWE had a chance with Ray and they took away everything good about him at RR 2015 and turned him back into that horrible Dudley character. Then they did nothing with him. Their loss.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Again?

    Never left!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Not really. By that logic any heel who gets cheered is a good face, regardless of the fact they're wrestling as a heel.

    ReplyDelete
  122. WILL YOU STOP?!

No seriously, quit being mean :(

    ReplyDelete
  123. Cause it's all about the benjamins.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I think age isn't as significant of a factor as it was 15-20 years ago. With modern medicine and the fact that wrestlers generally take better care of their bodies than they did in the 80s and 90s plenty of guys can still go into their 40s or even their 50s. Its not like the old days where years of coke and steroids left them a shell of their former selves at age 40.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Awesome reference. Miss that girl.

    ReplyDelete
  126. It was a one shot deal.

Are you really upset at the lack of character development during the 6 minute cameo?

Personally, I would rather he comes back with D-Von, I think the Dudleys could bring a lot to the tag division.

  128. Am I irked that the guy reinvented himself and acted/wrestled/look like a star, and they turned him into a comedy character? Of course I am.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I still enjoy the Sports Reporters.

    ReplyDelete
  130. How's your Mother?

    ReplyDelete
  131. You mean you expected them to bring him in not as the superstar who wrestled for the company for years and their fans remember (and can see on the Network), but instead as a new character he created in an indy fed that has a fraction of the fanbase?

Why on earth would WWE bring him in for that?

    ReplyDelete
  132. All about her today!

    AIN'T NO STOPPIN' HER... NOOOOOOWWWWWWWW

    ReplyDelete
  133. You'll note I said "(save for Sting)."

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'm getting the impression you're actually defending WWE throwing the guy out in a fucking comedy spot, and having him using Team 3D spots with R-Truth, which is some unfortunate implications shit if I've ever seen it. (D-Von isn't there? Shit, let's get another black guy... no one will notice the difference.)

In which case, enjoy your day. I'm out.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Outstanding. Well, I have to go stomp around New York.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I think it's more a case of years on the independent circuit and HHH's belief that they'll have to un-learn 'bad habits' from the indies, which may block them from understanding WWE style, and also the investment in someone from a developmental perspective is lost if they're the wrong side of 30. Clearly there are exceptions as Steen is 31. Just looked at the rosters of TNA and ROH, and if I was raiding, can't think of anyone I want to get - maybe Bram and Magnus (both under 30), I know Bram was there and didn't work out, but maybe he's improved, and Magnus has the charisma. Roderick Strong from ROH maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  137. You expected the cameo to be a huge dramatic spot? Have you never watched a Rumble before? He was a tag team wrestler, why would he be the focus of the Rumble?

Why does R-Truth's skin colour matter?

    ReplyDelete
  138. Counterpoint: when you're in your 40s and spent the majority of your career bumping on poorly constructed/barely padded rings on the Indy circuit and the healthcare options available to you should get injured are "go to the ER" or "go to Walgreens and get some aspirin and bandaids," those miles you put on are a lot rougher than they would have been in the WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Heads up: they might try to cross the streams. Crazy, I know, but they're desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Listen, I think it's impressive that he got into the best shape of his life that late in his career and yes, he made "Bully Ray" work, but that was in TNA. Shane Douglas worked in mid-90s ECW.

Bully Ray would stick out like a sore thumb if he showed up anywhere near the WWE main event scene.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Crazy, I just watched that match!

  142. The Messiah of the Backbreakingly Boring? Not a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  143. What sucks about the age thing is that there seems to be this believe that they older guys like the Addiction, Storm, and Roode somehow have to be indoctrinated before they make the main roster.

Seriously, fuck that mindset. They know what the hell they're doing, they bring something different yet still "entertaining" and solid to their work. Just fucking sign them and let them loose. Not everyone has to go through WWE brainwashing

    ReplyDelete
  144. Isn't that pretty much what WWE says?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Not everything has to be WWE style.

I know *they* don't believe that, but in the bigger picture, it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Bram punched a cop and was fired, if he didn't he would be in one of the Ascension guy spot. The rumors are they were interested in the Briscoes, ACH and Moose

    ReplyDelete
  147. And don't forget: that was a Philly crowd. Yeah, they'd have popped for him regardless, but that crowd had a connection to Bubba Ray Dudley, not Bully Ray.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Maybe they had some sort of heat? Haynes wasn't the most stable guy.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I don't know what it means, but I knew the name Christopher Daniels and his ankh/dark priest thing back when I barely knew ANYTHING about the Indy scene.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Well said Bobby Lashley

    ReplyDelete
  151. Yes, he's part of SHOOT NATION. It's like his 18th gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Hell, even I've made leaps and bounds in TNA!

I think my title run(s) were quite good!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Briscoe chose to stay in Roh because the money WWE offered was not interesting enough and same for Moose who chose GFW

    ReplyDelete
  154. I think that was the point. Your health care options suck in both cases, but in the former you were at least taking bumps (and less risks) in a much safer environment.

    ReplyDelete
  155. The original Sin Cara really messed it up for more experienced wrestlers. If he didn't bomb so spectacularly than maybe they would let some bypass developmental.

    ReplyDelete
  156. You saw the interview when he was essentially begging them to let him back? He would've been "dancing bubba" if it meant getting a contract, man. I think you care about it a lot more than he does.

    ReplyDelete
  157. And TNA will make him world champion. WWE's probably thinking "jobbing to Baron Corbin" is more his level.

    ReplyDelete
  158. And Kenta would probably have bombed if he was thrown directly in the main roster, but no way people like Owens, Zayne or Balor need to spend years getting yelled at by DeMott

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  160. And from what I understand, you're doing OK for yourself in New Japan.

Call Lucha Underground, they could bring you in as Killshot's younger brother Tech-9.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Yeah, but with guys like Addiction, Storm and Roode, there's no need for them to go to developmental. They would be fine going to the main roster anyway. And besides, do you think they would need/want to be trained by Billy Gunn, Jason Albert, Norman Smiley and Robbie Brookside?

    ReplyDelete
  162. "it. (D-Von isn't there? Shit, let's get another black guy... no one will notice the difference.)"

I hate to say this, but if the crowd popped...then they didn't. I think that's terrible too and an indictment on that crowd. But again it probably shows Wwe read the audience correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  163. There's no health insurance, but there's trainers and doctors backstage (no Punk jokes, please) and ice packs (no Rollins jokes, please) and so on.

If you get hurt, there's someone there to check you out. If you get hurt at some VFW hall where you're wrestling for $20 and a pitcher of beer? Not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  164. And that's not a knock on the trainers, it's that Storm, Roode, Kaz and Daniels wouldn't want that at this stage in their careers anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  165. you mean the same audience that shit all over the rumble a few minutes later ? I wouldn't put too much fait in WWE audience reading skills

  166. They would probably give them deal like Ryhno. I don't think he his training at the performance center between the tapings

  167. Judging by their track record of signing former ROH world champs, I would imagine Elgin would go soon enough, and if they cared enough about the tag scene, Young Bucks.

  168. He was an incredible heel manager. Age may have been the reason why Hayes was an announcer rather than a manager in the WWF.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Apparently the Bucks have heat with WWE because they turn down an invitation to a try out. If they want to sign a tag team they might as well go for ReDragon

  170. I'm just saying on average more guys can still go at 40 nowadays than back then. Certainly less deaths at that age.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I honestly don't think they would go straight to the main roster, which is why I think a lot of them stay away even when there's interest on WWE's end, such was it might be.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Right, but he's not main roster, either.

  173. My Stranga

    ReplyDelete
  174. Probably because WWE's mindset is they have to go through developmental to be 'made ready for WWE TV' regardless of background.

    ReplyDelete
  175. To be fair if I was Bucks I wouldn't want to leave Bullet Club to sign with the E. Still probably the best stable to be in wrestling at the moment.

  176. My point was that being annoyed at R Truth replacing DVon doesn't make much sense when directed at WWE - the audience reacted as if DVon *was* replaceable, so in this sense the WWE was right. That's an indictment of the audience, not of WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Still makes me laugh that the briscoes put that out there and people believed it. There's no way wwe would want to deal with the headaches that come along with those two idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  178. So is HHH not allowed to ever win any matches at all?

    ReplyDelete
  179. Coincidently Bubba Ray just tweeted "it's not abouth who's next but where's NXT". So I would raise that from a one to a five at leaatm

    ReplyDelete
  180. WWE has paid for surgeries and such for in-ring injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  181. What does it have to do with race? It was the "WHASSSSUP Drop", and what's R-Truth's catchphrase? Oh yeah, "What's Up?" Make sense to me.

If you think it has to do with the fact that R-Truth is black you're the one looking for race to complain about.

  182. That spot was awesome. It was a good way to pop the Philly crowd and let him do all his nostalgic spots.

Great booking by WWE and they should be commended.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Gillberg could tweet the same exact thing. Not only would the joke be funnier, but it's just as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I'd rather see the Dudleys doing the Rhyno role on NXT and putting over new teams than seeing them on the main roster.

    ReplyDelete
  185. YES.

He should either never wrestle again, or (if he's going to continue to pretend to be Vince McMahon on TV) never win again.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I just don't see the problem, personally. He beat a 56-year old in a one-off special attraction. And needed a ton of help to do so. It's not like he squashed Ziggler or Balor cleanly.

    ReplyDelete
  187. With all this talk of "oh, he could be a trainer," just remember that maybe he can't. Just because you're knowledgable doesn't mean you'd be a good teacher or even want to teach.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Shelton is kind of the modern Barry Windham, the political connections. Could be an all-time great if he wanted to, but usually puts it in autopilot for whatever reason.
