Scott's Mailbag of Doom 05.06.15

Comments

  1. I'm pretty sure the title match would have gone on last for KOTR 94, but they wanted to do the storyiine where Neidhart saves Bret from losing the title and later on the night helps Owen win the KOTR, which was a pretty neat storyline twist.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I remember Nash having a Colosseum video of his collection of matches back in 95, which was pretty a pretty bad video as it mostly included his houseshow matches.

  3. As far as DVD releases go, why have they never given Andre the Giant a proper DVD treatment?

Yeah, they released that bargain bin Andre the Giant VHS tape on DVD about ten years ago, but that was nothing compared to what they could and should have done.

Also, how about an updated Jake "the Snake" Roberts DVD chronicling his road to redemption (especially after his "Pick Your Poison" DVD was so utterly depressing at times).

And when did Scott Hall compete in World Class?

    ReplyDelete
  4. I wonder how much of Andre's career they own. Obviously they should have all his WWWF/WWF stuff, but he moved around so much they would probably have to skip a ton. But fuck it, just let Tim White narrate Andre's story with still images on the screen. He lived such a unique life, that would be enough for me.

  5. I was thinking of something else and typed World Class.

  6. A Scott Hall DVD could be amazing. Trained by Dusty Rhodes and Barry Windham. Wrestled in NWA, AWA, WCW, and WWF. Was active during both the 80s and 90s boom periods. helped initiate the latter. Was a member of two infamous groups -- the Clique and nWo. Has a tremendous redemption story.

Anyone who has listened to him on Stone Cold's podcast can attest to his ability to tell a good story and everyone has always commended his mind for the business. He's earned the right to tell the story of his life and career IMO.

Fuck yeah Rick Rude should be in the Hall. How is he not already? If they had any class, Rude and Hennig go in the same year with a badass retrospective on both guys that goes all the way back to their childhood or whatever.

Was it revealed they wanted Bret to keep it so Owen could bear him? Remember Jim interfering in both but couldn't remember if they referenced that being the reason

I would buy a Rick Rude DVD set the day it came out.

Selling Bossman a bit short as he has at least a dozen higher profile matches that are good - excellent. The Giants doc is on the Network now and they do somewhat extended profiles of Vader and Sid which I think is their way out of doing a real one for each ( the OMG/Akeem section is real good too).

I can't stand Memphis stuff, the fact that they did the same thing for 30 years doesn't help, plus I hate the whole wrestling style. Anyway, the DVD list:

DiBiase: I wouldn't buy it just because he was retired before I started watching, but sure.

Bulldog: What Scott said. Plus all his other good matches not involving Bret were him tagging with Owen. No way in hell that set ever happens.

Rude: Yes, absolutely, he'd have a 3 disc DVD and would be in the HOF if he were still alive.

Slaughter: Maybe a doc, but 2 more discs of his matches would be torture.

Bossman: Nah... I could see a Jake Roberts style 2 disc set if he were around to be on it, but he's not.

    Nasty Boys: No.

Hall & Nash: Surprised that their isn't already one out for Hall and one about to be released for Nash given their recent HOF inductions. Though I'd imagine any of their good matches on various DVDs already.

Luger: Sure, but the whole thing with the chick ODing in his house is an issue...

Vader: Again, what Scott said. There's plenty of good WCW matches to put on there, but outside of his match with HBK (which is good but not great) his WWF run was pretty crappy, you really need the Japan stuff. Though he's still alive, you could at least do a doc.

Sid: Again, he's still alive. And while I wouldn't want to see the matches portion I bet this would sell pretty well, so I'm shocked it isn't already out.

    Goldust: FUCK NO!

Shane: Not happening until he's back on TV in some fashion.

  12. If they do Andre, they'd better get some fucking footage of him tearing it up for New Japan, though of course they won't.

    ReplyDelete
  13. What was it that you were thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Henning is in the HoF, was inducted by Wade Boggs

    ReplyDelete
  15. "How much does he weigh?"

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was so shocked they never did a Kurt Angle boxset back in 2005

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Memphis thing seems so weird from an outsider's perspective- reading their results in PWI, or the USWA Champions list in the PWI Bibles they put out, you see crazy shit like Lawler being 30-time USWA Champion, then you watch him as this chubby, unimpressive comedy loser in the WWF, and you're like "how the FUCK do people pay tickets to see JERRY LAWLER as the Main Event Guy?"

    ReplyDelete
  18. They could do bonus content of Paul Heyman, Steve Austin and others just sitting around telling Rude stories.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You're tearing me apart, Lisa!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would love a Kurt Angle boxset, but it's unlikely to happen until he finishes up with TNA. Plus I feel like any documentary would be pretty depressing.

Would love to see DiBiase and Rick Rude box sets. Special features for the Rude set should include montages of him calling people names as he took off his robe, with Bobby Heenan laughing in the background.

Is there an issue between Rude's family and the WWE that has prevented them from doing much of anything with him? He was a DLC character for one of the video games, yeah?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Whatever territory the American Starship thing debuted in. Continental?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think WWE does enough on Andre. The segment from True Giants talking to Tim White was good, but Andre is one of the few names the mainstream knows, and he was in the Princess Bride, a cult classic. He's no Miz, but...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think I recall Art (O'Donnell) Donovan asking a stupid question, and Macho and Gorilla no-selling it and debating why Anvil helped Bret keep the title.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rude being on raw and nitro the same night was awesome. wish he would have stayed in DX tho.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've said this before, and I'll say it again about King of the Ring 1994:

Vince McMahon felt Randy Savage was too old to wrestle. But he had 41 year-old Savage to commentary for a match with 44 year-old Lawler and 40 year-old Piper. And then right around the time Savage leaves for WCW, Vince pushes 45 year-old Bob Backlund to the Main Event.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It must've been a trip for Lawler to play adored babyface in Memphis and then cowardly, evil heel everywhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I know they did that in the AWA, but maybe it started in Continental.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The OSW lads rightfully pointed out on the WM9 review that Savage was relegated to commentary (which he did an awful job of that show) despite totally stealing the show at WM7 and 8.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yup. Why not Savage vs. Razor Ramon instead of Backlund? It was before Backlund's big push, so that was essentially a squash match. Or Savage vs. Shawn Michaels instead of Tatanka?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Shit, the more I think about it, the more I think that one of WWF's biggest mistakes was the mishandling of Randy Savage in 1993-94.

There was totally more money in a Savage push in 1993 than a Hogan one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good call - Savage really could have done some awesome stuff with Razor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So the dirty old man Lawler that we know ("PUPPIES!!!") only has one of his "guys"? I shudder to think about what would be if he still had both...

    ReplyDelete
  34. And they *already* had a history. Warrior & Savage vs. Flair & Razor happened at Survivor Series 1992.

  36. AverageJoeEverymanMay 7, 2015 at 7:16 AM

well it was supposed to happen until it turned into Savage/Perfect

    ReplyDelete
  37. AverageJoeEverymanMay 7, 2015 at 7:17 AM

as a kid I was really upset they didnt keep Anvil on as muscle instead of running him off that night on RAW. I have no idea what I was thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh right! Plus, Razor was the one who cost Savage his title against Flair earlier in the Fall.

Really, there were all the cards on the table for a Savage/Razor Ramon blood feud payoff at Mania 9.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Scott Hall had short stints in Florida, Mid Atlantic and Central States territories in 1984-1985 before joining the AWA.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sgt. Slaughter had a pretty good run in the WWF and Mid Atlantic territories between 1980 and 1985, besides his feuds with The Iron Sheik, Pat Patterson and Wahoo McDaniel, there was also the Road to Greensboro with him and Don Kernodle against Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood for the NWA tag team titles. There was also the cobra clutch challenge, matches with Bob Backlund and even his early work in the AWA wasn't bad.

    ReplyDelete
  41. For whatever reason Sid gets no respect from the DVD people. I thought it was weird that he was left off the "Greatest Stars of the 90s" set despite being champ in both promotions and main eventing two Manias.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sid doesn't get enough respect from the entire pro wrestling industry. Here's a guy who was decent in the ring, decent on the mic (even when he screwed up promos), made some very shitty angles work, was ALWAYS over, and had solid runs in both WWF and WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Central States! That's what I was thinking of.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's alright. I once thought Ahmed johnson and mabel would have been the best tag team ever. We all have moments

    ReplyDelete
  45. Totally. It's amazing really, he was involved in the biggest angle ever (his opening promo on Nitro in May 96 is still one of the top 5 moments in wrestling history). And even in the WWF, he was involved with the iconic ladder matches. Reinvented his persona from dull southern guy in the late 80s to Razor. Oddly enough, he's underappreciated for his role in wrestling these past 20+ years

    ReplyDelete
  46. You (and everyone else) should look up "McMemphis" on YouTube, if you haven't already. Start at part 1 and go through it all The main attraction is to see Vince heeling it up in *fine* style, but the "Hero in Memphis, heel everywhere else" side of Lawlor's character is fun to watch, and is even (kayfabe) explained. It's a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah, and they had a t shirt, that i bought. He should at lesdt he in the hof.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Andre was a killer in New Japan, what with his evil beard and all.

The WWE could make a killer DVD set with Andre 'a usual Federation stuff ( including house shows), AWA, World Class and Mid South stuff.

And I am sure made a stop or two in Georgia Championship Wrestling back in the late '70's or early '80's. Maybe they could even find some of his Portland stuff. Speaking of which...

Who owns the Portland Wrestling library? I assume the Don Owens family has it ( or what is left of it), but, man, what a vastly underrated territory that was!

    ReplyDelete
  49. If the rumours of Minneapolis getting Wrestlemania 33 or 34 are true, you can guarantee Rude goes in that year.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Decent in the ring?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'd buy the set just for the montage of his intros. "Cut the music! What I'd like to have right is for all you fat, out of shape, [insert name of city here] [insert derogatory word that is alliterative, or rhymes with, the name of the city], keep the noise level down while I take off my robe and show all the ladies what a real sexy man looks like! Hit the music!"

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't know about a strictly Goldust, but Dustin Rhodes has had a pretty good (and interesting) career that I would buy a set of him that included some of his underrated early WCW stuff.

    I concur

  54. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMay 7, 2015 at 12:23 PM

I know. I meant Rude should have gone in same time

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think that the Goldust one could work. You've got 25+ years of a career with lots of time in several different promotions and plenty of personal ups and downs.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Good bit on Lawler. We get so used to him now as a shitty commentator on a shitty wrestling show that we forget he was a GOD for almost 30 years.

People didn't understand why Punk bladed himself against him in their cage match, until you realize it's against the goddamn King of Memphis in Memphis in a cage match. You HAVE TO get color against him

    ReplyDelete
  57. The fact that they could've done a Kurt Angle box-set back in 2005, like 5 years into his career shows just how incredible Kurt really was.
