Top Ten

In your House matches?

A whole bunch of Shawn Michaels, I'm sure.  Depending on what you count as In Your House, clearly Shawn v. UT would occupy a couple of the top spots.  If not, I'd go:

1.  Shawn v. Mankind
2.  Shawn v. Jarrett
3.  Shawn v. Diesel
4.  Bret v. Bulldog bloodbath
5.  Canadian Stampede Ten-Man
6.  Taka v. Great Sasuke
7.  Final Four
8.  Undertaker v. Mankind (Buried Alive)
9.  Undertaker v. Mankind (Revenge of the Taker)
10.  Bret v. Hakushi

If you want to include the post-Ground Zero shows, insert Shawn v. Undertaker HITC at #1 and the GZ match at, say, #7.

Clash of the Champion matches?

1.  Flair v. Steamboat
2.  Flair v. Funk
3.  Flair v. Sting
4.  Midnights v. Fantastics
5.  Enforcers v. Steamboat & Rhodes
6.  Steamboat v. Austin (US title)
7.  Blonds v. Steamboat & Douglas
8.  Midnights v. Flair & Windham
9.  Dustin & Windham v. Steamboat & Douglas
10.  Thundercage six-man

Clearly I'm very biased towards the early Crockett version and tag matches in general, but DUH.

Comments

  1. Hunter/Slaughter Boot Camp match, adding that for you, Scott.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I would've definitely thought the Canadian Stampede 10 man was #1 or #2, not #5.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Was.Midnights/Southern Boys at a Clash? If so that definitely goes on there.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Was Shawn/Mankind and Shawn/Jarrett really *that* good? I'd think you'd put the 10-man and Shawn/Diesel over those, but whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  5. GAB 1990

WCW had some fine tag matches that year.

    ReplyDelete
  6. If you're counting post-Ground Zero, you know that the Austin-Dude Love matches would be way up there too. Same for Vince-Austin in the cage.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Shawn v foley was IMO. The Jarrett match I didn't think was even a 4 star affair.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Clash; Blonds vs Flair/Anderson was great even if poorly booked by not giving it enough time for the full 3 falls

Sting vs Rude King of Cable semi-final in Nov 92 was a great match, their first meeting a year earlier had crowd heat WCW hadn't experienced in a long time

    ReplyDelete
  9. Shawn/Jarrett is a great match, third best American match of 1995 behind Bret/Bulldog and the Double Dog Collar match, IMO. For the record Benoit/Eddy time limit from Saturday Night is a close fourth.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1990 WCW tag teams always reminds me of the Capital Combat ppv where Scott Steiner apologizes to his fans for losing before the match even happens

"i just hope our fans understand that we can't win all the time"

    ReplyDelete
  11. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 4:23 PM

In Your House Extends to Backlash 1999 I think. Shawn/Taker is definitely #1 with a bullet.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Shawn/Jarrett is great. You must not have seen it live.

    ReplyDelete
  13. IYH 2 Roadie vs Kid was also a great match and about the only second rope piledriver for the finish i've ever seen

    ReplyDelete
  14. agreed, best part of that match was Jarrett's extra fancy blue suede tights

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's funny how Shawn is the first guy to admit what a complete asshole he was in 94-97 but damned if he couldn't back it up in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. Shawn vs. Taker (Bad Blood)
    2. Austin vs. Dude Love (Over the Edge)
    3. Shawn-Mankind (Mind Games)
    4. Bret vs. Bulldog (Dec. '95)
    5. Ten Man Tag (Canadian Stampede)
    6. Austin vs. Rock (Backlash)
    7. Four Way Elimination (Final Four)
    8. Triple Threat Steel Cage (Breakdown)
    9. Shawn vs. Taker (Ground Zero)
    10. Shawn vs. Diesel (Good Friends, Better Enemies)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yep. Backlash was the final In Your House

    ReplyDelete
  18. I find HBK/JJ to be pretty boring

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think they officially stopped using the In your house subtitles at No Way Out (although the In Your House ppvs in the wwe network library only go to the DX show.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Backlash '99

    ReplyDelete
  21. Southern Boys fought the freebirds at every clash in 1990.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes Shawn vs UT is definitely #1. I'm surprised to see Scott ranking UT/Taker so high.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Even Vince McMahon has admitted to screwing up.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If GSW and Atlanta were to get bounced, who becomes the new championship favorite? I know the media is going to push it as Cleveland, but I can't see it not being the Clippers.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Damn, lots of crazy weather in the middle of the country.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You do know that HGH is thought of by some as a boost to longevity?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Clippers would destroy the Cavs. I'm not really sold on th Cavs getting outta this round

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love how everyone in the league calls him soft

    ReplyDelete
  29. He even admits that his who is responsible for that. He HAD TO have the best match on the card. His ego would accept no less.

    ReplyDelete
  30. In 2010, when the C's beat Orlando to get to the Finals, they were up by like 20 late in the 4th at home then D-12 slams one in and starts to taunt the crowd. At that moment, I realized he will never win shit. He doesnt get it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 4:49 PM

That show is a nightmare. Jada Smith is the worst casting maybe of all the times.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Memphis would body the fuck out of any eastern team.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Washington could matchup well against them. A healthy Wall would make Washington the Eastern favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  34. he seemed decent on the show from the couple episodes I watched...though he is distractingly like a young christopher Eccleston

    ReplyDelete
  35. LA CLIPPERS NBA Champions.....think about that for a second.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The apocalypse is among us

    ReplyDelete
  37. If they put Home Improvement on Netflix on top of everything else they have, I'd never leave the house. I SUPERCHARGED MY RIDING MOWER!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, Washington is pretty physical. It'd be the closest thing to the 80s NBA we'd get.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It drives me crazy, I thought they turned things around about midway through the season, but the last 5-6 episodes were just horrid. Still no clue what show they're trying for, campy in spots, gory dark in spots, "real" in spots, hyper unreal stuff in others

    ReplyDelete
  40. Gortat and ZBo might end up killing each other

    ReplyDelete
  41. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 4:51 PM

I have a feeling we aren't talking about the Rap group D-12

Backlash 99 was advertised as IYH then that designation was removed even before the VHS was released.

    ReplyDelete
  43. He's not bad at all, but like he was lifted out of an alternative batman show and dropped into that horseshit

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOL at this principal from Georgia

    ReplyDelete
  45. The whole point of the show is flawed. Batman in his attempt to end crime escalated the crazy criminals.....if all the crazies show up before he spouts pubes...where the hell are things suppose to go when he becomes batman?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Nope. Dwight Howard

    ReplyDelete
  47. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 4:52 PM

There was a brief reprieve in there where they quick on the campy villain of the week and started focusing on Falcone and Maroni and well as some good old fashioned Bullock and Gordon and it worked. Then more Fish and Barbara arrived just in time to snuff out the goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gortat would slug Conley in the face

    ReplyDelete
  49. Going to have my RoH reviews back this Saturday

    ReplyDelete
  50. I just love we'll get two new teams in the finals. The heat and spurs were getting into Cena?Orton territory for me.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mitch, The GodfatherMay 10, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Fuck that. I still want Chicago vs. Memphis. Zbo would most likely punch Noah out.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Rude and heat you say

Go check out superbrawl 2 on the network if you have it. Rude can barely get through his pre-match spiel

    ReplyDelete
  53. He's a piece of shit. He's a bad human being too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So Pratt and Rudd are Marvel super heroes who should Adam Scott play?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mitch, The GodfatherMay 10, 2015 at 4:55 PM

Rather do it up 20 then by down 20.

    I'm all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ultron...I feel you have these tendencies for destruction because you have never experienced a porterhouse or ribs

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow, Ichiro just faked out a runner fielding a double in a one run game and kept the tying run from scoring from first. Ball was hit deep and Ichiro gave up on it like it was gone, but it hit off the wall and Ichiro fielded the long hop just like he planned and the Giants runner on first, who wasn't busting it thinking the batter hit a walk off, couldn't make it to home and had to hold up at third. Old Man Suzuki still has it

    ReplyDelete
  62. Pics or it didn't happen

    ReplyDelete
  63. No it really happened here I'll just show.....hey....wait a sec

    ReplyDelete
  64. Another one thats debatable is the IYH international incident 6 man tag

    ReplyDelete
  65. I kinda irrationally want him to hang on long enough for 3000, not that he needs it for HOF, but want him to get it

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thaddeus MountainMay 10, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Ultron. Eat this burger. It's meat on a bun. You will love it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Same, even if it means going to a bottom feeder just to get enough ABs

    ReplyDelete
  68. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 5:03 PM

    Bonzai almost became my hero.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think him and Thor would be besties

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thaddeus MountainMay 10, 2015 at 5:03 PM

And, if he does reach 3000, he would have more professional hits than anyone in history counting the 1200+ in Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Her playing Matt Foley at SNL40 was fucking lame.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 5:05 PM

Who would play Blankman's nemesis Spacebar!?

    ReplyDelete
  73. No one who played from say 1985 to 2006 should be elected to the HOF as long as Bonds and Clemens are out..

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thaddeus MountainMay 10, 2015 at 5:06 PM

Dee Gordon is currently batting .439. Goddamn.

    ReplyDelete
  75. He carried that show all season.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thaddeus MountainMay 10, 2015 at 5:07 PM

    Wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Seriously why the fuck does Kayne think his legacy is ruined if he gets caught smiling?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't blame Dodgers brass for dealing him because his second half numbers regressed back to his usual average self, but he's starting to put it together over there. If he had stayed in LA, Jimmy Rollins would've played with both Tom and Dee Gordon

He's insane for marrying to a Kardashian.

    ReplyDelete
  85. BTW the Giants Wall of Fame outside AT&T is a joke. Kurt Manwaring? Marvin Bernard? Get some real legends dammit

    ReplyDelete
  86. This Chris Regal whack job from TNA Mecca is my new favorite psycho

  95. Eh, I'm OK with an asshole tax

    ReplyDelete
  96. More like it fuels the "Russo is a moron" theory.

    ReplyDelete
  97. That was my favorite season.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Part of it has to be because he is paid

    ReplyDelete
  99. ThebrazilianpsychoMay 10, 2015 at 5:20 PM

    *big smile*

    ReplyDelete
  100. How can anyone read this recap and think hiring Russo for anything is a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
  101. ThebrazilianpsychoMay 10, 2015 at 5:21 PM

    He's a mad musical genius.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Aubrey Huff was busy that weekend

    ReplyDelete
  103. I don't think he is. He's bashed other sites for being paid by WWE. TNA gives him Q&A's and re-tweets a lot of his stuff. Bob Ryder dropped in and did an impromptu Q&A last week.

    ReplyDelete
  104. The following he wrote is a persecutory delusion and nothing more.

"One of my favorite activities after watching Impact is searching for forums in which fans can talk about the show and share with one another their thoughts. However, it's getting increasingly harder to find venues where TNA fans can safely express their opinions on Impact without having to deal with the trolling of the anti-TNA crowd or the smarks who insist on taking the fun out of pro wrestling."

He can knock off the act and if it isnt, he is a fucking whacko. He is not a battered woman, he is a fanboy of TNA and unable to handle others criticize the product. That above paragraph is psycho talk

    ReplyDelete
  105. Got up to August 1996 in my chronological network viewing today, Hog Wild, A nitro, raw, Clash, and now summerslam, I;ve wasted a whole day and not made it through a single week, This Undertaker/Mankind boiler room brawl is as boring as i remember

    ReplyDelete
  106. Don't worry, Steve Decker has an increased role in tomorrow night's BoD RAW show

    ReplyDelete
  107. That sounds like Caliber talking about Planet Fitness.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Yeah, saw it a year ago and didnt think it held up too well.

    ReplyDelete
  109. With less microwaved bacon

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yeah I laugh when I read that if I post in the Post-Impact Discussion thread.

    ReplyDelete
  111. At least he didn't burn his eggs.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I'm all for fans supporting their favorite product but he is whacked.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I wouldn't be surprised if there was still quite a lot of microvaved bacon. Less than your boy, but still quite a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think he is just not open for criticism of TNA at all. I've seen people banned left and right on that site for saying a couple negative things about TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hey, you ever try to microwave bacon and scramble eggs at the same time? God didnt give us enough hands to make that possible

    ReplyDelete
  116. #TNAlivesmatter

    ReplyDelete
  117. Its cult-like behavior. Its why I think he is getting some sort of kickback to act like that.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Or he considers TNA's re-tweets and Q&A's as a kickback. If he does, that's just sad.

    ReplyDelete
  119. The idea of ostensibly having open chat threads and then warning people to keep the discussion about TNA has always made me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  120. #AlpoStockIncrease

    ReplyDelete
  121. Great lists,

I would also include the 6 man from IYH: International Incident, Windham/Luger vs Horsemen, Steamboat vs Funk. Those were some great matches that deserve honorable mention for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  122. *riotous applause*

    ReplyDelete
  123. Both Mat Latos and Ryan Vogelsong went 7 IP with 5 K's, is it 2010 again?

    ReplyDelete
  124. So GFW is going to be following a "TV" show type format with 13 episodes and a 2 hour finale? If so, meh.

    ReplyDelete
  125. "but it hit off the wall and Ichiro fielded the long hop just like he planned and the Giants runner on first, who wasn't busting it thinking the batter hit a walk off"

And this is the biggest thing I hate about AT&T.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I just watched Clash 11 again, and actually enjoyed the Furnas vs Windham match, and the RnR Express vs Midnights, and Doom vs Steiners matches more this time around than any other time. I remember watching it live back in the day too.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I don't remember ever seeing the Vader/Shawn match but i gated Michaels then and his winning pissed me off, knowing what i know now about him throwing a hissy fit before being the reason Vader didn't win doesn't make me any more excited to watch it now

    ReplyDelete
  128. "The IT Factor of Professional Wrestling........DOGGY FOOOOOOOOOOD".

    ReplyDelete
  129. Is that the new deal wrestling shows are getting now? If so, doesnt bode well for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Maybe the shows wil end in the middle of a match as a cliffhanger.

    ReplyDelete
  131. That's what JR leaked that GFW is planning on doing. I guess the market for a weekly TV wrestling show is getting narrower and narrower.

    ReplyDelete
  132. do we have to watch robin hood to find out what happened next?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Those really black hubcaps work on just about any car.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Night thread's up

    ReplyDelete
  135. He might make a halfway decent cup of coffee, maybe...

    ReplyDelete
  136. I think it was at Capitol Combat.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Jeff Jarrett has that effect.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Forget Mr. Wrestlemania, Shawn Michaels should be rechristened Mr. In Your House.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Bret/Bulldog has seemed to have gained more favor over the years. Has there been any 5 star matches that have lost such strong fervor over the years? I don't mean a 5 star match becoming a 3 star one, but at least falling to like 4-4.25.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Always fascinating to watch that DVD with him and Bret talking and realizing just how much alike they really are in that department.

    ReplyDelete
  141. This show would probably be better with the nitrous.

    ReplyDelete
  142. My personal top ten:

    1- Shawn-Mankind
    2- Bret-Bulldog
    3- Final four
    4- Shawn-Diesel
5- Bret-Austin (revenge of the 'taker)
    6- Bret-Lafitte
    7- Bret-Hakushi
8- 8 man usanctioned (no way out)
9- Shawn-Owen (rage in the cage)
    10- Taker-Mankind (buried alive)

    ReplyDelete
  143. Power_of_Hogans_HOF_RingMay 10, 2015 at 6:55 PM

    Yeah! List questions rule!
    1. Shawn-Taker HITC
    2. Shawn-Mankind
    3. Shawn-Diesel
    4. International Incident 6-man tag
    5. Canadian Stampede
    6. Shawn-Jarrett
    7. Shawn-Taker
    8. Final Four
    9. Bret-Bulldog
    10. Bret-Patriot

    ReplyDelete
  144. Midnights vs Fantastics has to be at least 2 if not 1. I haven't seen Sting/Flair in ages but it made such an impression on every that how could it not be 1?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Austin/Dude Love would be number 1. Please update your records

    ReplyDelete
  146. Once again Bret matches would dominate. As once again proof as who the true best ever is and was and ever will be.

    ReplyDelete
  147. True fact: the silly string spot was pitched by Bob Mould, during his brief stint on the booking committee.

    ReplyDelete
  148. There is a Steiner/Flair COTC match thats incredible. I really enjoyed Doom vs. Steiners at Clash X

    ReplyDelete
  149. I think I would put Bret/Diesel cage match on there

Also think Shawn vs Owen from that same IYH might make it

I would put them over the Mankind/Taker from Revenge of Taker

    ReplyDelete
  150. I'm pretty sure it's Mouse Rat bro.

    ReplyDelete
  151. You loathe these dudes with a truly sincere passion.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Clash of the Champions 14 in January of 1991.

    ReplyDelete
  153. That promo was fantastic.

WWE could really use an unironic 80s style cokehead.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I like Scott's IYH list. I would put Shawn-Diesel ahead of Shawn-Jarrett and put the 10-man ahead of Shawn-Jarrett too. And I'd dump the Bret-Hakushi match for the star-making HHH-Mankind match from Canadian Stampede.

Flair-Steamboat is the best match to ever appear on non-PPV TV. Unless Japan has something that can rival it.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Macklin, Man Without FearMay 10, 2015 at 8:24 PM

Much as I love Austin/Dude, it pales in comparison to HIAC 1.

    ReplyDelete
  156. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighMay 10, 2015 at 8:37 PM

How did Steiner get a shot at flair? What was the buildup?

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yeah there's only one or two ideas of his that so I've ever seen Russo just flat out say "man, that really wasn't a great idea in hindsight". Can't remember what it was, showed up in his reddit AMA. One of them might've been Beaver Cleavage. Most of the time it's the "you can't expect me to remember anything about a job I devoted my entire life and nearly wrecked my family for" argument =)

    ReplyDelete
  158. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighMay 10, 2015 at 8:38 PM

    ReplyDelete
  159. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighMay 10, 2015 at 8:39 PM

I would say HBK vs foley is #2, easily IMO

    ReplyDelete
  160. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 10, 2015 at 8:58 PM

That Shawn-Jarrett match has not aged well to me. At all.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Flair sandbagged Steiner in that match. A young Hunter keenly took notes.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 10, 2015 at 9:00 PM

    As it should.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 10, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Yeah, that's one of those forgotten classics.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Backlash 99 was such a hot PPV. Literally the hottest time period in wrestling history.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I don't recall that one in particular but it wasn't uncommon for Flair to do short feuds with tag team guys. He had a short program with both Ricky Morton and Road Warrior Hawk complete with title defenses.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 10, 2015 at 9:03 PM

Shawn/Jarrett is good, but overrated. I'd put it at #8 or so.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Adam "Colorado" CurryMay 10, 2015 at 9:05 PM

Yeah, all his stalling definitely knocks it out of the ***** territory.

    ReplyDelete

I'd say 4, but just barely.

Especially since I think Scott has said it's his favorite match.

  171. I'm watching ROH, when did Kyle O'Reilly become American Dragon level awesome?

  172. The Crockett territory really knew how to do tag matches and always kept a bunch of good teams around.

  173. No greater pressure on earth than the one placed on self.

  174. I haven't watched it in a while but that seems strange since I thought he was the one that wanted Scott to be a singles star and he wouldn't leave Rick behind. Either way I dug it.

  175. Was the iron man match actually rated that highly to begin with? IIRC a lot of reviewers were loudly disappointed even at the time.

  176. Thank you, I said the same and got told hunter wasnt sandbagging and how he put every wcw guy over

  177. I think it was a tournament that led to the match

  178. Shawn mankind was motyc 96 for me that match is great. I really like the Jarret match but its got some Memphis style stuff so I get why people dont

  179. Was the moun tie on that ppv?

  180. Shawn/Mankind was amazing. Just a wild brawl of a match moving at a pace you rarely saw at that time. Silly finish is all that brings it down. Mick has often said this is his best match (he may have super seeded it with the Orton one since).

  181. Admit it you ordered it because of the lumberjack match!

  182. If you've not seen it, I'd strongly recommend the Best of IYH DVD - I think for match quality and variety its the most enjoyable WWE DVD I've seen since its such a mix-up of different wrestlers and styles of match. Don;t have the match listing to hand but pretty sure its got most of what we're discussing here on it.

  183. Shawn Michaels/Undertaker HIAC without a doubt. I even loved the finish with Kane, which was perfect within the context of the ongoing storylines.

  184. That's sort of like the theory of evolution in that "theory" doesn't mean "hypothesis" (as people commonly mistake it for) but rather a set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based.

I think the only ones singing that match's praises have always been WWE itself.

She is a viable option, IMO. She looks good enough to be a leading lady on that scale and has enough name for Hollywood satisfaction. Plus, she's not just the token model and can actually act

I hear you. I'm glad they killed someone off though. It kind of takes away from the "OMG the world is going to end!" vibe when none of the heroes are ever in actual peril. I think at some point they need to have Thanos killing off some of the lesser Avengers in order to build to the payoff

SummerSlam 1996 should have been the end of Shawn Michaels: Main Eventer, Phase One. Vader beats the shit out of him, beats up his "mentor" (Jose), and takes the title without apology. Shawn has to transition from "boyhood dream" dancing boy toy stripper to a more mature, more violent version of himself in order to get the title back and slay the beast. His character was just not built for the main event.

  190. I agree. I loved that match when I first saw it, but when I watched it again, recently, it was nothing special. Then again, it's still one of Jarrett's best WWE matches.

  191. Steiner bragged about his reputation of being stiff and not protecting wrestlers... i'd sandbag the guy to

  192. the night Flair won the belt from Sting, Flair cuts a victory promo in the hallway with the Horsemen. After high-fiving VK Wallstreet (with Barry checking out Alexandra York) Flair mouths off to the passing Steiners, Scott gets in his face
